This chapter identifies and discusses the pressing issues confront the industry in the 21st century, with particular emphasis given to the impacts the market opening measures that China will be required to adopt since its accession to the World Trade Organization.

Abstract

In this chapter, the authors describe the emerging outbound travel market in China. The authors focus on the role of Hong Kong in the development of this potentially huge market for Asia and the world. Although the majority of Chinese remain predominantly rural, the total size of this urban market is impressive and the proportion of the population traveling overseas is growing. The ability to travel outside of China depends on two essentials: adequate income to afford international travel and official permission to do so. To meet the high and growing demand for outbound travel, the Philippines was added to the list of tourism liberalizing countries in 1992, followed by Australia in 1997.

Abstract

In this chapter, the author looks at leisure in China, providing insight into the lifestyle of contemporary Chinese, for whom domestic and outbound travel have become major life goals. Three primary functions of leisure are relaxation, entertainment, and personal development. Within these three activities, people find, respectively, recovery from fatigue, deliverance from boredom, and liberation from daily automatism. It is based on this understanding and conceptual interpretation that this discussion of leisure in contemporary Chinese society is developed. A characteristic of leisure in China prior to the economic expansion was that leisure activities were limited in scope and poor in quality.
