The synthesis, structural characterisation and coordination behaviour of mono- and ditopic p-hydroquinone-based bis(pyrazol-1-yl)methane ligands is described (i.e., 2-(pz2CH)C6H3(OH)2 (2a), 2-(pz2CH)-6-(tBu)C6H2(OH)2 (2b), 2-(pz2CH)-6-(tBu)C6H2(OSiiPr3)(OH) (2c), 2,5-(pz2CH)2C6H2(OH)2 (4)). Ligands 2a, 2b and 4 can be oxidised to their p-benzoquinone state on a preparative scale (2a ox, 2b ox, 4 ox). An octahedral Ni II complex [trans-Ni(2c)2] and square-planar Pd II complexes [Pd2bCl2] and [Pd2b ox Cl2] have been prepared. In the two Pd II species, the ligands are coordinated only through their pyrazolyl rings. The fact that [Pd2bC12] and [Pd2b oxC12] are isolable compounds proves that redox transitions involving the p-quinone substituent are fully reversible. In [Pd2b oxCl2], the methine proton is highly acidic and can be abstracted with bases as weak as NEt(3). The resulting anion dimerises to give a dinuclear macrocyclic Pd II complex, which has been structurally characterised. The methylated ligand 2-(pz2CMe)C6H3O2 (11 ox) and its Pd II complex [Pd11 oxCl2] are base-stable. A new class of redox-active ligands is now available with the potential for applications both in catalysis and in materials science.

TMEDA-free (TMEDA: tetramethylethylenediamine) LiCH(2)SMe is a suitable reagent for the selective introduction of (methylthio)methyl groups into PhBBr(2) and its p-silylated derivative Me(3)Si--C(6)H(4)--BBr(2). The resulting compounds, R*--C(6)H(4)--B(Br)(CH(2)SMe) (R*=H: 2; R*=SiMe(3): 7) and PhB(CH(2)SMe)(2) (3), form cyclic dimers through B--S adduct bonds in solution and in the solid state. Compounds 2 and 3 have successfully been used for preparing the (N(2)S) scorpionate [PhBpz(2)(CH(2)SMe)](-) ([5](-)) (pz: pyrazol-1-yl) and the (NS(2)) scorpionate [PhBpz(CH(2)SMe)(2)](-), respectively. Compound 7 proved to be an excellent building block for the heteroditopic poly(pyrazol-1-yl)borate p-[pz(3)B--C(6)H(4)--Bpz(2)(CH(2)SMe)](2-) ([10](2-)) that mimics the two ligation sites of the copper enzymes peptidylglycine alpha-hydroxylating monooxygenase and dopamine beta-monooxygenase. Treatment of the monotopic tripod [5](-) with CuCl and CuBr(2) results in the formation of complexes K[Cu(5)(2)] and [Cu(5)(2)]. An X-ray crystallography study of K[Cu(5)(2)] revealed a tetrahedral (N(2)S(2)) coordination environment for the Cu(I) ion, whereas the Cu(II) ion of [Cu(5)(2)] possesses a square-pyramidal (N(4)S) ligand sphere (S-atom in the axial position). The remarkable redox properties of K[Cu(5)(2)] and [Cu(5)(2)] have been assessed by cyclic voltammetry and quantum chemical calculations. The reaction of K[Cu(5)(2)] with dry air leads to the Cu(II) species [Cu(5)(2)] and to a tetranuclear Cu(II) complex featuring [PhB(O)pz(2)](2-) ligands. Addition of CuCl to K(2)[10] gives the complex K(3)[Cu(10)(2)] containing two ligand molecules per Cu(I) center. The Cu(I) ion binds to both heteroscorpionate moieties and thereby establishes a coordination environment similar to that of the Cu(I) ion in K[Cu(5)(2)].

The geometric parameters of the mol-ecule of the title compound, C(14)H(16)O(2)P(2), are in the usual ranges. It is a meso compound with the two chiral P atoms having opposite configurations. The P-CH(2)-CH(2)-P chain adopts a trans conformation [torsion angle -178.59 (17)°]. The P=O bonds are almost coplanar with the adjacent phenyl ring [torsion angles = 3.8 (3) and 0.3 (3)°]. Whereas one of them is synclinal [torsion angle = -59.0 (2)°] to the central C-C bond, the other is anti-clinal [torsion angle = 56.6 (2)°] to the central C-C bond. The dihedral angle between the two phenyl rings is 5.2 (3)°. The mol-ecules are linked by weak C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. They crystallize in rows running along the c axis.

trans-Dibromidotetrakis(1H-pyrazole-kappaN(3))manganese(II), [MnBr2(C3H4N2)4], crystallizes in the C2/c space group with the Mn atom located on a centre of inversion. As a result, there is just one half-molecule in the asymmetric unit. Geometric parameters are in the usual ranges. The Mn centre is octahedrally coordinated by four pyrazole residues in the equatorial plane and by two bromide ligands in the axial positions. The molecular conformation is stabilized by N-H...Br hydrogen bonds. The structure of the title compound had already been described [Lumme & Lindell (1987). J. Coord. Chem. 15, 383-392] in a different setting, with the Mn atoms located on inversion centres on Wyckoff position d (1/4, 1/4, 1/2; 3/4, 1/4, 0; 3/4, 3/4, 1/2; 1/4, 3/4, 0). In the conventional setting, however, the Mn atoms are situated on Wyckoff position a (0, 0, 0; 0, 0, 1/2; 1/2, 1/2, 0; 1/2, 1/2, 1/2). In this special case, if the c axis has the same length as the short diagonal of the ac plane, the transformation from one setting into the other yields almost indistinguishable cell parameters, and the possibility of confusion arises. This setting ambiguity could be the reason why two structures in different settings might be taken as polymorphs even though they can easily be transformed. As a result of this, care should always be taken to use the conventional setting.

Rare examples of heteroditopic scorpionate ligands [m-(pz(HO)BtBu)(pz2BtBu)C6H4]2- ([m]2-) and [p-(pz(HO)BtBu)(pz2BtBu)C6H4]2- ([p]2-) are reported. As a unique feature, both ligands possess a chiral boron centre. Treatment of [m]2- and [p]2- with FeII and CoII ions, respectively, gives the dinuclear metallomacrocycles [FeII2(micro-m)2] and [CoII2(micro-p)2]. The molecular structures of the colourless complex [FeII2(micro-m)2] and the red-purple complex [CoII2(micro-p)2] have been determined by X-ray crystallography. To meet the geometric requirements of macrocycle formation, the two asymmetric boron centres have opposite absolute configurations in the case of [FeII2(micro-m)2] and the same configuration in [CoII2(micro-p)2].

A new polymorph of tetraphenyldiboroxane [or oxybis(diphenylborane)], C(24)H(20)B(2)O, (Ia), has been found. It is monoclinic, like the already known form, (Ib), and can be refined in the same space group, namely P2(1)/c, or in the equivalent setting P2(1)/n. The molecular conformations of the two polymorphs differ in the rotations of two of the phenyl rings about the B-C bonds, leading to markedly different packing patterns and cell dimensions.

The title compound, [MgBr(2)(C(4)H(8)O)(4)], forms crystals which appear to be monoclinic but are actually twinned triclinic. The current form is a new triclinic polymorph, with Z'= 2, in addition to the already known tetragonal polymorph. Although the geometric parameters of the two polymorphs agree well, their packing patterns are completely different.

Cationic dinuclear Cu(II) complexes 3 and 4 have been prepared using the novel hydroquinone-based imine chelators 2,5-((i)Pr(2)NCH(2)CH(2)N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH)(2)-1,4-(OH)(2)-C(6)H(2) (1) and 2,5-(pyCH(2)CH(2)N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH)(2)-1,4-(OH)(2)-C(6)H(2) (2), respectively (py = 2-pyridyl). X-Ray quality crystals of both complexes were grown from their DMF solutions. The sterically more encumbered compound crystallizes in the form of discrete dinuclear entities with Cu(II) centres in a distorted square-planar ligand environment (one coordination site is occupied by a DMF molecule). The pyridyl derivative 4 features dinuclear hydroquinone-bridged subunits similar to 3. However, the Cu(II) ions are now six-coordinate with two DMF molecules at an axial and an equatorial position of a Jahn-Teller-distorted octahedron. Moreover, the dinuclear subunits are no longer isolated but linked with each other via bridging hydroquinone oxygen atoms which occupy the second apical position of each octahedron. The structure suggests that the magnetic properties of the resulting coordination polymer of 4 could be described by a model valid for dimerized spin chains. As a result of this analysis the antiferromagnetic coupling constants J(1)/k(B) = 9.9 K (intradimer) and J(2)/k(B) = 0.9 K (interdimer) are obtained. Both in 3 and in 4, the hydroquinone --> semiquinone transition of the central bridging unit (E degrees ' = + 0.57 V, 3; E degrees ' = + 0.51 V, 4; DMF; vs. SCE) displays features of chemical reversibility. In the case of , reduction of Cu(II) centres requires a peak potential of E(p) = - 0.42 V.

Two anionic tridentate N,O,N' chelators, [pz(Ph)B(mu-pz)(mu-O)B(Ph)pz](-) (3(-)) and [pz(Ph)(Ph)B(mu-pz)(mu-O)B(Ph)pz(Ph)](-) (4(-)), as well as the corresponding complexes [Fe(3)(py)Cl], [Fe(3)Cl(2)] and [Cu(3)Cl], have been synthesised and structurally characterised by X-ray crystallography (pz: pyrazolyl, pz(Ph): 3-phenylpyrazolyl, py: pyridine). Since our synthesis approach takes advantage of the highly modular pyrazolylborate chemistry, inexpensive and relatively resistant N,O,N' ligands of varying steric demand are readily accessible. The complexes [Fe(3)(py)Cl] and [Fe(3)Cl(2)] possess a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal configuration with the pyrazolyl rings occupying equatorial positions and the oxygen donor being located at an apical position. The complex [Cu(3)Cl] crystallises as chloro-bridged dimers featuring Cu(II) ions with ligand environments that are intermediate between a square-planar and a trigonal-bipyramidal geometry.

Reaction of [(fc)3(Li)6.(TMEDA)2] with FeCl2 gives the pentanuclear iron complex [(fc)3(Fe)2(Li)2.(TMEDA)2] featuring two ferra[1]ferrocenophane moieties bridged by a 1,1'-ferrocenediyl unit; the non-ferrocene Fe(II) ions are tetra-coordinate and adopt a high-spin state.

Four highly soluble square-planar Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes of siloxy-salens (2SiCu, 2SiNi) and hydroxy-salens (2Cu, 2Ni) have been synthesized. An X-ray crystal structure analysis was performed on 2SiCu, 2SiNi, and 2Ni. The compounds have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry, and EPR spectroscopy. According to these results, the monooxidized species [2SiCu]+ and [2SiNi]+ are to be classified as Robin-Day class II and III systems, respectively. Magnetic measurements on the dinuclear (PMDTA)Cu(II) complex 1Cu2 x (PF6)2 with deprotonated 1,4-dihydroxy-2,5-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)-benzene (1) linker revealed antiferromagnetic coupling between the two Cu(II) ions thereby resulting in an isolated dimer compound. Coordination polymers [1Cu]n(H2O)(2n) of Cu(II) ions and bridging p-hydroquinone linkers were obtained from CuSO4 x 5 H2O and 1,4-dihydroxy-2,5-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)benzene. X-ray crystallography revealed linear chains running along the crystallographic a-direction and stacked along the b-axis. Within these chains, the Cu(II) ions are coordinated by two pyrazolyl nitrogen atoms and two p-hydroquinone oxygen atoms in a square-planar fashion.

The synthesis and crystal structure analysis of the ditopic p-phenylene-bridged bis(pyrazol-1-yl)borate [[p-C6H4(Bpz2tBu)2]Li2] (LLi2; pz=pyrazol-1-yl) is described. A salt metathesis reaction between LLi2 and MnCl2 in THF leads to the dinuclear complex [L[Mn(THF)]2(mu-Cl)2] featuring a central diamond MnII-(mu-Cl)2-MnII core (X-ray crystal structure analysis). Treatment of LLi2 with 2 equiv of [Ti(NMe2)3Cl] gives the dinuclear titanium compound [L[Ti(NMe2)3]2]. Upon reaction of LLi2 with [Ti(NMe2)2Cl2] and water, the mu-oxo-bridged dititanium species [L[Ti(NMe2)Cl]2(mu-O)] is obtained in excellent yield (X-ray crystal structure analysis).

The synthesis of [tBu3SiPAg2]8 which features an Ag16-cluster in the solid state was achieved by metathesis reaction of AgOCN with tBu3SiPNa2.

A systematic study of cation-pi interactions between alkali metal ions and the cyclopentadienyl ring of ferrocene is presented. The alkali metal (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+) salts of the ditopic mono(pyrazol-1-yl)borate ligand [1,1'-fc(BMe2pz)2]2- crystallize from dimethoxyethane as multiple-decker sandwich complexes with the M+ ions bound to the pi faces of the ferrocene cyclopentadienyl rings in an eta5 manner (fc = (C5H4)2Fe; pz = pyrazolyl). X-ray crystallography of the lithium complex reveals discrete trimetallic entities with each lithium ion being coordinated by only one cyclopentadienyl ring. The sodium salt forms polyanionic zigzag chains where each Na+ ion bridges the cyclopentadienyl rings of two ferrocene moieties. Linear columns [-CpR-Fe-CpR-M+-CpR-Fe-CpR-M+-](infinity) (R = [-BMe2pz]-) are established by the K+, Rb+, and Cs+ derivatives in the solid state. According to DFT calculations, the binding enthalpies of M+-eta5(ferrocene) model complexes are about 20% higher as compared to the corresponding M+-eta6(benzene) aggregates when M+ = Li+ or Na+. For K+ and Rb+, the degree of cation-pi interaction with both aromatics is about the same. The binding sequence along the M+-eta5(ferrocene) series follows a classical electrostatic trend with the smaller ions being more tightly bound.

Solvent-free [LiCH2SMe]infinity forms a layer structure consisting of four- (Li2C2), five- (Li2CS2), and six-membered (Li2C2S2) rings in the solid state; the compound violently explodes upon heating to T=160+/-5 degrees C under an argon atmosphere.

The sodium silyl chalcogenolates NaESiR(t)Bu(2) (R = Ph, (t)Bu; E = S, Se, Te), accessible by the nucleophilic degradation of S, Se, or Te by the sodium silanides NaSiR(t)Bu(2) (R = Ph, (t)Bu), have been characterized by X-ray structure analysis. Protonolysis of the sodium silyl chalcogenolates yields the corresponding chalcogenols. The Cu and Zn chalcogenolates, [Cu(SSiPh(t)Bu(2))](4) and [ZnCl(SSi(t)Bu(3))(THF)](2), have been synthesized by metathesis reactions of CuCl with NaSSiPh(t)Bu(2) and of ZnCl(2) with NaSSi(t)Bu(3), respectively. The solid-state structures of the transition metal thiolates have been determined. The compounds (t)Bu(2)RSiE-ESiR(t)Bu(2) (R = Ph, (t)Bu; E = S, Se, Te) are accessible via air oxidation. With the exception of (t)Bu(3)SiS-SSi(t)Bu(3), these compounds were analyzed using X-ray crystallography and represent the first structurally characterized silylated heavy dichalcogenides. Oxidative addition of (t)Bu(3)SiTe-TeSi(t)Bu(3) to Fe(CO)(5) yields [Fe(TeSi(t)Bu(3))(CO)(3)](2), which has also been structurally characterized.

A comparison of the molecular structures of mono-, di- and tetraborylated ferrocenes [Fc{B(R(1))(R(2))}] (R(1)/R(2)=Br/Br, Br/Fc, Br/Me, Me/Me, Me/OH, OMe/OMe), 1,1'-[fc{B(R(1))(R(2))}(2)] (R(1)/R(2)=Br/Br, Br/Me, OMe/OMe), and 1,1',3,3'-[Fe{C(5)H(3)(BMe(2))(2)}(2)] revealed the boryl substituent(s) to be bent out of the Cp ring plane towards the iron center. The corresponding dip angle alpha* decreases with decreasing Lewis acidity of the boron atom and with increasing degree of borylation at the ferrocene core. This trend is well reproduced by DFT calculations (including [FcBH(2)], not yet accessible experimentally). A Bader analysis of the electron density topology of [FcBH(2)] (alpha*=26.5 degrees ; BP86/TZVP) clearly showed that there is no direct iron-boron bonding in this compound. Instead, strongly delocalized orbital interactions have been identified that involve the boron p orbital, C(ipso) of the adjacent Cp ring, d orbitals at iron, and a through-space interaction with the second Cp ring. A second important factor is attractive electrostatic interactions, which are enhanced upon ligand bending. Cyclic voltammetric measurements on the series [FcBMe(2)], 1,1'-[fc(BMe(2))(2)], and 1,1',3,3'-[Fe{C(5)H(3)(BMe(2))(2)}(2)] indicate a substantial anodic shift in the oxidation potential of the central iron atom upon introduction of BMe(2) substituents. Addition of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) does not just counterbalance this effect, but leads to a cathodic shift of the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox transition far beyond the half-wave potential of parent ferrocene. In the Mossbauer spectra, a continuous decrease in the quadrupole splitting (QS) is observed upon going from parent ferrocene to [FcBMe(2)], to 1,1'-[fc(BMe(2))(2)], and to 1,1',3,3'-[Fe{C(5)H(3)(BMe(2))(2)}(2)]. In contrast, no significant differences are found between the QS values of ferrocene, [Fc(BMe(2)-DMAP)], and 1,1'-[fc(BMe(2)-DMAP)(2)].

In the solid state, [Cu(NH3)Cl] forms a three-dimensional network with each Cu(I) ion being surrounded by three other Cu(I) centres in a trigonal-planar fashion [Cu...Cu = 2.979(1) A; cubic space group I2(1)3], whereas in [Cu(NH3)2]Br the cations establish infinite linear (Cu...Cu) chains spanning the crystal lattice [Cu...Cu = 2.931(1) A; monoclinic space group C2/c].

The tetraphosphides (tBu3Si)3P4M3 (M = Li, Na) and (tBu2PhSi)3P4Na3 have been synthesized in high yield from the reaction of 3 equivalents of the silanides tBu3SiM (M = Li, Na) and tBu2PhSiNa with P4 in benzene. (tBu3Si)3P4M3 (M = Li, Na) are transformed into the unsaturated triphosphides (tBu3Si)2P3M (M = Li, Na) and tBu3SiPM2 in tetrahydrofuran at ambient temperature.

The title compound, C(6)H(16)N(+).Br(-), was refined against room-temperature data in space group P2(1) as a racemic twin by Kociok-Köhn, Lungwitz & Filippou [Acta Cryst. (1996). C52, 2309-2311]. At low temperature, we found a different phase, which is characterized by a different cell (twice as big as the cell at room temperature) and a different space group (P2(1)/n). Surprisingly, the cell parameters obtained at low temperature can be transformed into those measured at ambient temperature. Even the coordinates can be transformed and the structure can be refined in the small cell. However, some warning signs (e.g. a low |E(2) - 1| value, apparent twinning and peaks in the electron-density map) point to the correct cell and space group.

The crystal structure of di-tert-butylsilanediol, C(8)H(20)O(2)Si, has a reversible phase transition at 211 (2) K. The orthorhombic high-temperature structure has space group Ibam, with Z' = 1/2, and shows a disordered hydrogen-bonding system. The low-temperature structure, determined at 143 (2) K, has a twinned monoclinic cell, with space group C2/c and Z' = 2, and shows an ordered hydrogen-bonding system.

A redox reaction takes place between GaCl3 and an excess of ferrocene, leading to the multidecker sandwich complex 1, [-Ga(C5H5)Fe(C5H5)Ga(C5H5)Fe(C5H5)-]n[GaCl4]2n, which features an array of alternating Ga(I) and Fe(II) ions bridged by cyclopentadienyl moieties.

The structure of hexaamminenickel(II) dichloride determined previously by Essmann et al. [Essmann, Kreiner, Niemann, Rechenbach, Schmieding, Sichla, Zachwieja & Jacobs (1996). Z. Anorg. Allg. Chem. 622, 1161-1166] was redetermined at 173 K. There are no significant differences between these two structures.

Dark violet hexastannane (tBu3 Si)6 Sn6 displays a new framework motif for molecular tin compounds, in which six Sn atoms are located at the corners of a trigonal prism.
