We present FUSE spectra of the giant HII region NGC604 in the spiral galaxy M33. Chemical abundances are derived from far-UV absorption lines and are compared to those derived from optical emission lines. We derived the column densities of HI, NI, OI, SiII, PII, ArI, and FeII, fitting the line profiles with either a single component or several components. Our net results, assuming a single component, show that N, O, Si, and Ar are apparently underabundant in the neutral phase by a factor of 10 or more with respect to the ionized phase, while Fe is the same. However, we discuss the possibility that the absorption lines are made of individual unresolved components, and find that only PII, ArI, and FeII lines should not be affected by the presence of hidden saturated components, while NI, OI, and SiII might be much more affected. If N, O, and Si are actually underabundant in the neutral gas of NGC604 with respect to the ionized gas, this would confirm earlier results obtained for the blue compact dwarfs. However, a deeper analysis focused on P, Ar, and Fe mitigates the above conclusion and indicates that the neutral gas and ionized gas could have similar abundances., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We study a kinetically constrained lattice glass model in which continuous local densities are randomly redistributed on neighbouring sites with a kinetic constraint that inhibits the process at high densities, and a random bias accounting for attractive or repulsive interactions. The full steady-state distribution can be computed exactly in any space dimension d. Dynamical heterogeneities are characterized by a length scale that diverges when approaching the critical density. The glassy dynamics of the model can be described as a reaction-diffusion process for the mobile regions. The motion of mobile regions is found to be subdiffusive, for a large range of parameters, due to a self-induced trapping mechanism., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

A minimal athermal model for the flow of dense disordered materials is proposed, based on two generic ingredients: local plastic events occuring above a microscopic yield stress, and the non-local elastic release of the stress these events induce in the material. A complex spatio-temporal rheological behaviour results, with features in line with recent experimental observations. At low shear rates, macroscopic flow actually originates from collective correlated bursts of plastic events, taking place in dynamically generated fragile zones. The related correlation length diverges algebraically at small shear rates. In confined geometries bursts occur preferentially close to the walls yielding an intermittent form of flow localization., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We study the relationship between the mid-IR (5-18 $\mu$m) emission of late-type galaxies and various other star formation tracers in order to investigate the nature of the dust heating sources in this spectral domain. The analysis is carried out using a sample of 123 normal, late-type, nearby galaxies with available data at several frequencies. The mid-IR luminosity (normalized to the H-band luminosity) correlates better with the far-IR luminosity than with more direct tracers of the young stellar population such as the H$\alpha$ and the UV luminosity. The comparison of resolved images reveals a remarkable similarity in the H$\alpha$ and mid-IR morphologies, with prominent HII regions at both frequencies. The mid-IR images, however, show in addition a diffuse emission not associated with HII regions nor with the diffuse H$\alpha$ emission. This evidence indicates that the stellar population responsible for the heating of dust emitting in the mid-IR is similar to that heating big grains emitting in the far-IR, including relatively evolved stars responsible for the non-ionizing radiation. The scatter in the mid-IR vs. H$\alpha$, UV and far-IR luminosity relation is mostly due to metallicity effects, with metal-poor objects having a lower mid-IR emission per unit star formation rate than metal-rich galaxies. With the eventual aim of describing flowing elasto-plastic materials, we focus on the elementary brick of such a flow, a plastic event, and compute the long-range perturbation it elastically induces in a medium submitted to a global shear strain. We characterize the effect of a nearby wall on this perturbation, and quantify the importance of finite size effects. We present a FUSE spectroscopic study of the nearby gas--rich, metal--deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy IZw 36. Atomic hydrogen and many metal lines are observed in absorption against the stellar continuum of young, massive stars embedded in the ionized region. Profile fitting of absorption lines allowed us to determine abundances and investigate the chemical composition of the neutral gas. This study present strong evidences that nitrogen is 16 (+7 -8) times less abundant in the neutral gas with respect to the ionized gas (all uncertainties are 2 sigma. Similarly, the oxygen abundance estimated using phosphorus as a tracer is lower in the neutral gas by a factor 8 (+17 -5). We also find that argon is underabundant by a factor 32 (+8 -7) and that log (ArI/OI) < -3.0 which is inconsistent with the solar value -2.1 (+0.1 -0.1) (Lodders2003), implying that argon is likely ionized into ArII in the neutral medium., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We present J=1-0 and J=2-1 12CO maps of several star-forming regions in both the Large and the Small Magellanic Cloud, and briefly discuss their structure. Many of the detected molecular clouds are relatively isolated and quite small with dimensions of typically 20 pc. Some larger complexes have been detected, but in all cases the extent of the molecular clouds sampled by CO emission is significantly less than the extent of the ionized gas of the star-formation region. Very little diffuse extended CO emission was seen; diffuse CO in between or surrounding the detected discrete clouds is either very weak or absent. The majority of all LMC lines of sight detected in 13CO has an isotopic emission ratio I(12CO)/I(13CO) of about 10, i.e. twice higher than found in Galactic star-forming complexes. At the lowest 12CO intensities, the spread of isotopic emission ratios rapidly increases, low ratios representing relatively dense and cold molecular gas and high ratios marking CO photo-dissociation at cloud edges., Comment: 13 pages, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

In this paper we analyze the changes in the microscopic dynamics of a colloidal glass submitted to an oscillatory shear. We use Multispeckle diffusing Wave Spectroscopy to monitor the transient dynamical regimes following a shear application. We show that the system displays a spontaneous aging that is amplified by a low amplitude oscillation (overaging) but stopped by a high amplitude one (rejuvenation). Intermediate amplitudes drive the system into a dynamical state that cannot be reached through spontaneous evolution. We demonstrate that theses systems present a weak long term memory and that the all observed phenomenology can be explained by a broadening of the relaxation time distribution under oscillatory strain. We discussed the similarities of our results with the behavior of spin glasses upon temperature shifts. We present maps and a catalogue containing the J=1-0 12CO parameters of 29 individual molecular clouds in the second-brightest LMC star formation complex, N11. In the southwestern part of N11, molecular clouds occur in a ring or shell surrounding the major OB star association LH9. In the northeastern part, a chain of molecular clouds delineates the rim of one of the so-called supergiant shells in the LMC. The well-defined clouds have dimensions close to those of the survey beam (diameters of 25 pc or less). Some of the clouds were also observed in J=2-1 12CO, and in the lower two transitions of 13CO. Clouds mapped with a twice higher angular resolution in J=2-1 12CO show substructure with dimensions once again comparable to those of the mapping beam. The few clouds for which we could model physical parameters have fairly warm (T(kin) = 60 - 150 K) and moderately dense (n(H2) = 3000 cm-3) gas. The northeastern chain of CO clouds, although lacking in diffuse intercloud emission, is characteristic of the more quiescent regions of the LMC and appears to have been subject to relatively little photo-processing. The clouds forming part of the southwestern shell or ring, however, are almost devoid of diffuse intercloud emission and also exhibit other characteristics of an extreme photon-dominated region (PDR)., Comment: 14 pages; accepted for publication in A&A

We present here a microscopic study of the effect of shear on a dense purely repulsive colloidal suspension. We use Multispeckle Diffusing Wave Spectroscopy to monitor the transient motions of colloidal particles after being submitted to an oscillatory strain. This technique proves efficient to record the time evolution of the relaxation times distribution. After a high oscillatory shear, we show that this distribution displays a full aging behavior. Oppositely, when a moderate shear is applied the distribution is modified in a non trivial way. Whereas high shear is able to erase all the sample history and rejuvenate it, a moderate shear helps it to age. We call this phenomena overaging. We demonstrate that overaging can be understood if the complete shape of the relaxation time distribution is taken into account. Various experiments evidence spatial heterogeneities in sheared yield stress fluids. To account for heterogeneities in the velocity gradient direction, we use a simple model corresponding to a non-monotonous local constitutive curve and study a simple shear geometry. Different types of boundary conditions are considered. Under controlled macroscopic shear stress $\Sigma$, we find homogeneous flow in the bulk and a hysteretic macroscopic stress - shear rate curve. Under controlled macroscopic shear rate $\dot{\Gamma}$, shear banding is predicted within a range of values of $\dot{\Gamma}$. For small shear rates, stick slip can also be observed. A multispeckle technique for efficiently measuring correctly ensemble-averaged intensity autocorrelation functions of scattered light from non-ergodic and/or non-stationary systems is described. The method employs a CCD camera as a multispeckle light detector and a computer-based correlator, and permits the simultaneous calculation of up to 500 correlation functions, where each correlation function is started at a different time. The correlation functions are calculated in real time and are referenced to a unique starting time. The multispeckle nature of the CCD camera detector means that a true ensemble average is calculated; no time averaging is necessary. The technique thus provides a "snapshot" of the dynamics, making it particularly useful for non-stationary systems where the dynamics are changing with time. Delay times spanning the range from 1 ms to 1000 s are readily achieved with this method. The technique is demonstrated in the multiple scattering limit where diffusing-wave spectroscopy theory applies. The technique can also be combined with a recently-developed two-cell technique that can measure faster decay times. The combined technique can measure delay times from 10 ns to 1000 s. The method is peculiarly well suited for studying aging processes in soft glassy materials, which exhibit both short and long relaxation times, non-ergodic dynamics, and slowly-evolving transient behavior., Comment: 11 pages 13 figures Accepted in Review of Scientific Instrument (june 02)

We report the modifications of the microscopic dynamics of a colloidal glass submitted to shear. We use multispeckle diffusing wave spectroscopy to monitor the evolution of the spontaneous slow relaxation processes after the sample have been submitted to various straining. We show that high shear rejuvenates the system and accelerates its dynamics whereas moderate shear overage the system. We present a calibration of the massive star formation rate vs. [CII] luminosity relation based on a sample of nearby, late-type galaxies observed with ISO-LWS and imaged in the Halpha+[NII] line. The relation holds for far-IR luminosities 10^8 < L_{FIR} < 10^{10.5} L (solar units). The derived star formation rates have an uncertainty of about a factor of 10. Part of this uncertainty is due to the different mix of contributions to the [CII] emission from the different components of the interstellar medium in individual galaxies, as discussed in an appendix., Comment: Accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present $^{12}$CO(J=1--0) line observations of 22 low-luminosity spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster. These data, together with 244 others available in the literature, allow us to build a large sample that we use to study the molecular gas properties of galaxies spanning a large range of morphological types and luminosities and belonging to different environments (clusters - field). The molecular gas content of the target galaxies is estimated using a luminosity-dependent X = $N(H_2)/I(CO)$ conversion factor that has been calibrated on a sample of nearby galaxies. $X$ spans from $\sim$ 10$^{20}$ mol cm$^{-2}$ (K km s$^{-1})^{-1}$ in giant spirals to $\sim$ 10$^{21}$ mol cm$^{-2}$ (K km s$^{-1})^{-1}$ in dwarf irregulars. The value of the $X$ conversion factor is found consistent with a value derived independently from dust masses estimated from FIR fluxes, with a metallicity-dependent dust to gas ratio. The relationships between X and the UV radiation field (as traced by the $H\alpha+[NII] E.W.$), the metallicity and the H band luminosity are analysed. We show that the molecular gas contained in molecular clouds or complexes is of the order of 15% of the total gas on average whatever the luminosity or the Hubble type of the galaxies. We combine observations of spiral galaxies in the [CII] line at 158 micron, made with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer aboard ISO, with previous data from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory to study the origin of this line, which is the main coolant of the interstellar medium at relatively low temperatures. We also use HI and CO(1-0) observations of these galaxies and estimate the respective line fluxes in the same beam as the [CII] observations. We confirm the existence of a linear relation between the [CII] line intensity and the CO(1-0) line intensity, that we extend to intrinsically fainter galaxies. The dispersion around this relation is significant and due to variations in the far-UV flux, thus in the star formation rate. We find that for the least active galaxies of our sample, in terms of star formation, the rate of [CII] line emission per interstellar hydrogen atom is similar to that in the Solar neighbourhood. For those galaxies, most of the [CII] line emission comes probably from the diffuse cold atomic medium. In more active galaxies, considered globally, the average [CII] line emission is dominated by dense photodissociation regions and to some extent by the warm ionized diffuse medium. Using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope we have obtained deep high-resolution CCD images in V and I of a 28'x28' field in the outer disk of M 31 at ~ 116' from the center along the major axis to the south-west, and covering a range of projected galactocentric distance from about 23 to 33 kpc. The field was chosen to correspond with extended HI features recorded near the HI edge of the galaxy. The many tens of thousands of objects detected in this large field have been classified using an automatic algorithm which distinguishes unresolved from resolved structures and provides photometry on them. For the most part the unresolved objects are stars in M 31. The V-I colors of these stars are highly correlated with the column density of HI in the field. Assuming a Galactic extinction law, this yields a minimum extinction/atomic-gas ratio about 1/3 of that in the Solar neighbourhood. The ISM in this outer disk of M 31 therefore contains substantial amounts of dust. We have identified a population of B stars in the field whose distribution is also well correlated with the extended HI distribution. Evidently, star formation is both ongoing and wide spread in the outer disk of M 31. We present maps of dust emission at 7 microns and 15 microns/7 microns intensity ratios of selected regions in 43 spiral galaxies observed with ISOCAM. This atlas is a complement to studies based on these observations, dealing with star formation in centers of barred galaxies and in spiral disks. Many mean-field models have been introduced to describe the mechanical behavior of glassy materials. They often rely on averages performed over distributions of elements or states. We here underline that averaging is a more intricate procedure in mechanics than in more classical situations such as phase transitions in magnetic systems. This leads us to modify the predictions of the recently proposed SGR model for soft glassy materials, for which we suggest that the viscosity should diverge at the glass transition temperature $T_g$ with an exponential form $\eta \sim \exp(\frac{A}{T-T_g})$., Comment: 4 pages, Latex, 1 eps figure

The mid-infrared (5-16 micron) spectral energy distribution for an individual quiescent molecular cloud in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) was observed using ISOCAM. The spectrum is dominated by broad emission bands at 6.2, 7.7, and 11.3 microns, with weaker bands at 8.6 and 12.7 microns. As these are the same bands, with similar shape and relative strengths, as observed in the ISM of our Galaxy, the same carriers must exist in both galaxies. The carriers are widely consider to be large molecules or clusters of aromatic hydrocarbons, which absorb ultraviolet and visible photons and emit mid-infrared photons during high-temperature pulses. Based on the brightness of the mid-infrared emission and the estimated strength of the radiation field in the SMC, the absorption by aromatic hydrocarbons is of order 10% of total dust absorption, comparable to the case for Galactic dust. Ultraviolet observations of extinction of most SMC stars have shown that dust in the SMC does not absorb in the 2175 Angstrom feature that is so prominent in Milky Way extinction. If aromatic hydrocarbons and featureless extinction curves were ubiquitous in the SMC, then we would conclude that aromatic hydrocarbons are not the carriers of the 2175 Angstrom feature. However, SMC extinction curve measurements are biased toward hot, luminous stars, where aromatic hydrocarbons are destroyed, so that the absence of the 2175 Angstrom bump may not be typical of SMC dust. The presence of aromatic hydrocarbons in the SMC further demonstrate that these molecules exist even in an interstellar medium with an order-of-magnitude lower metallicity than in the disk of the Milky Way., Comment: 6 pages

We present observations with the mid-infrared camera ISOCAM on board ISO of the major star-forming region N66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud and of its surroundings. These observations were performed with broad filters and the CVF giving a spectral resolution of about 40. In addition, CO(2-1) data are presented, allowing us to identify and study how hot dust relates with the different phases of the Interstellar Medium present in N66. The spectra are dominated by the strong emission of fine structure line. Monochromatic maps have been made in the [NeIII] 15.6 microns and [SIV] 10.5 microns line. There are significant differences between their distributions, due to the effects of density and of shocks. Aromatic Infrared Bands are seen at various places in the field but they are generally faint. They exhibit a variety of shapes and relative intensities, suggesting that a diversity of carbonaceous materials are present. Silicate emission is also clearly visible in the central condensation and in a few others and emission from hot small grains longward of 10 microns is present in the whole region. All these dust components are heated by the very strong far UV radiation of the many young, massive stars contained in the region. The interstellar radiation field (ISRF) at 1600 A is >= 10^5 times the ISRF of the solar neighborhood in the peaks of MIR emission. The relative contributions of the dust components to the MIR spectra seem to depend on the intensity and the hardness of the far UV field. In general the 15/6.75 microns intensity ratio is higher than in relatively quiescent galactic regions but it is not as high as expected for a linear increase with ISRF. We interpret this behavior as due to the destruction of both AIBs carriers and VSGs in a very high ISRF., Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, accepted to A&A

The metal deficient starburst galaxy IZw18 has been observed with FUSE in a search for H2 molecules. The spectrum obtained with an aperture covering the full galaxy shows no absorption lines of diffuse H2 at the radial velocity of the galaxy. The upper limit for the diffuse H2 column density is found to be very low: N(H2) <~ 10^15 cm-2 (10 sigma), unlike our Galaxy where H2 is generally present for even low HI column densities. Although the HI column density is here as high as N(HI) ~ 2.10^21 cm-2, we observe 2N(H2)/N(HI)<< 10^-6. We cannot exclude the possibility that some H2 could be in very dense, small and discrete clumps which cannot be detected with the present observation. However, the remarkable absence of diffuse H2 in this metal-poor galaxy can be explained by the low abundance of dust grains (needed to form this molecule from H-atoms), the high ultraviolet flux and the low density of the HI cloud surrounding the star-forming regions. Thus having eliminated diffuse H2 as a significant contributor to the total mass, it appears that the gas of the galaxy is dominated by HI, and that the high dynamical mass is not composed of cold and diffuse baryonic dark matter., Comment: To appear in FUSE special issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters. 4 pages + 3 figures

We present mid-infrared spectro-imagery and high-resolution spectroscopy of the Orion bar and of a region in the Orion nebula. These observations have been obtained in the Guaranteed Time with the Circular Variable Filters of the ISO camera (CAM-CVF) and with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS), on board the European Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Our data shows emission from amorphous silicate grains from the entire HII region and around the isolated O9.5V star Theta2 Ori A. The observed spectra can be reproduced by a mixture of interstellar silicate and carbon grains heated by the radiation of the hot stars present in the region. Crystalline silicates are also observed in the Orion nebula and suspected around Theta2 Ori A. They are probably of interstellar origin. The ionization structure and the distribution of the carriers of the Aromatic Infrared Bands (AIBs) are briefly discussed on the basis of the ISO observations., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures. We present spectrophotometric imaging mid-IR observations of the reflection nebula Ced201. Ced201 is a part of a molecular cloud illuminated by a B9.5V star moving through it at more than 12 km/s. The spectra of Ced201 give evidence for transformation of very small carbonaceous grains into the carriers of the Aromatic Infrared Bands (AIBs), due to the radiation field of the illuminating star and/or to shock waves created by its motion. These very small grains emit mainly very broad bands and a continuum. We suggest that they are present everywhere in the interstellar medium but can only be detected in the mid-IR under special circumstances such as those prevailing in this reflection nebula. The efficiency of energy conversion of stellar light into mid-infrared emission is 7.5% for both the very small grains and the AIB carriers, and the fraction of interstellar carbon locked in these emitters is approximately 15%., Comment: To appear in A&A Letters

We present mid-IR images of a 15'x15' field in the south-west part of the Andromeda galaxy M 31 obtained with the ISOCAM camera on board ISO. We also present a 20" resolution far-UV image of a larger field at 200 nm obtained with the balloon-borne telescope FOCA 1000. These images are compared with HI, CO(1-0) and Halpha maps. The mid-IR emission as seen through filters at 7 and 15 mic is extremely well correlated with the distribution of neutral gas as shown by the HI and CO(1-0) maps, while the correlation is poorer with the distribution of the ionized gas seen through its Halpha emission. There is some correlation with the UV radiation, but it appears that the contribution of UV photons to the excitation of the carriers of the mid-IR emission is not dominant in most of M 31. The spectro-imaging observations of Cesarsky et al. (1998) show that the mid-IR spectra of several regions of M 31 are dominated by a strong emission band at 11.3 mic while emission in the other classical Infrared Bands at 6.2, 7.7 and 8.6 mic is faint or absent. More precisely, we find that the mid-IR spectral variations are not clearly related to the UV radiation field. The present observations have important consequences on our understanding of excitation of the interstellar mid-IR emission. In particular, we conclude that like for M 31, excitation in the Galactic cirruses may not be dominated by UV photons but rather by another mechanism which remains to be identified (visible photons ?).
