In inhomogeneous dielectric media the divergence of the electromagnetic stress is related to the gradients of \varepsilon and \mu, which is a consequence of Maxwell's equations. Investigating spherically symmetric media we show that this seemingly universal relationship is violated for electromagnetic vacuum forces such as the generalized van der Waals and Casimir forces. The stress needs to acquire an additional anomalous pressure. The anomaly is a result of renormalization, the need to subtract infinities in the stress for getting a finite, physical force. The anomalous pressure appears in the stress in media like dark energy appears in the energy-momentum tensor in general relativity. We propose and analyse an experiment to probe the van der Waals anomaly with ultracold atoms. The experiment may not only test an unusual phenomenon of quantum forces, but also an analogue of dark energy, shedding light where nothing is known empirically.

We describe a technique, applicable to liquid-argon-based dark matter detectors, allowing for discrimination of alpha-decays in detector regions with incomplete light collection from nuclear-recoil-like events. Nuclear recoils and alpha events preferentially excite the liquid argon (LAr) singlet state, which has a decay time of ~6 ns. The wavelength-shifter TPB, which is typically applied to the inside of the active detector volume to make the LAr scintillation photons visible, has a short re-emission time that preserves the LAr scintillation timing. We developed a wavelength-shifting polymeric film - pyrene-doped polystyrene - for the DEAP-3600 detector and describe the production method and characterization. At liquid argon temperature, the film's re-emission timing is dominated by a modified exponential decay with time constant of 279(14) ns and has a wavelength-shifting efficiency of 46.4(2.9) % relative to TPB, measured at room temperature. By coating the detector neck (a region outside the active volume where the scintillation light collection efficiency is low) with this film, the visible energy and the scintillation pulse shape of alpha events in the neck region are modified, and we predict that through pulse shape discrimination, the coating will afford a suppression factor of O($10^{5}$) against these events., Comment: 18 pages,10 figures, Submitted to NIMA

The forecasting of local GIC effects has largely relied on the forecasting of dB/dt as a proxy and, to date, little attention has been paid to directly forecasting the geoelectric field or GICs themselves. We approach this problem with machine learning tools, specifically recurrent neural networks or LSTMs by taking solar wind observations as input and training the models to predict two different kinds of output: first, the geoelectric field components Ex and Ey; and second, the GICs in specific substations in Austria. The training is carried out on the geoelectric field and GICs modelled from 26 years of one-minute geomagnetic field measurements, and results are compared to GIC measurements from recent years. The GICs are generally predicted better by an LSTM trained on values from a specific substation, but only a fraction of the largest GICs are correctly predicted. This model had a correlation with measurements of around 0.6, and a root-mean-square error of 0.7 A. The probability of detecting mild activity in GICs is around 50%, and 15% for larger GICs.

Dark matter particles with Planck-scale mass ($\simeq10^{19}\text{GeV}/c^2$) arise in well-motivated theories and could be produced by several cosmological mechanisms. Using a blind analysis of data collected over a 813 d live time with DEAP-3600, a 3.3 t single-phase liquid argon-based dark matter experiment at SNOLAB, a search for supermassive dark matter was performed, looking for multiple-scatter signals. No candidate signal events were observed, leading to the first direct detection constraints on Planck-scale mass dark matter. Leading limits constrain dark matter masses between $8.3\times10^{6}$ and $1.2\times10^{19} \text{GeV}/c^2$, and cross sections for scattering on $^{40}$Ar between $1.0\times10^{-23}$ and $2.4\times10^{-18} \text{cm}^2$. These are used to constrain two composite dark matter models.

We identify all symmetry-enforced band crossings in nonmagnetic orthorhombic crystals with and without spin-orbit coupling and discuss their topological properties. We find that orthorhombic crystals can host a large number of different band degeneracies, including movable Weyl and Dirac points with hourglass dispersions, fourfold double Weyl points, Weyl and Dirac nodal lines, almost movable nodal lines, nodal chains, and topological nodal planes. Interestingly, spin-orbit coupled materials in the space groups 18, 36, 44, 45, and 46 can have band pairs with only two Weyl points in the entire Brillouin zone. This results in a simpler connectivity of the Fermi arcs and more pronounced topological responses than in materials with four or more Weyl points. In addition, we show that the symmetries of the space groups 56, 61, and 62 enforce nontrivial weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topology in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling, leading to helical surface states. With these classification results in hand, we perform extensive database searches for orthorhombic materials crystallizing in the relevant space groups. We find that Sr$_2$Bi$_3$ and Ir$_2$Si have bands crossing the Fermi energy with a symmetry-enforced nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant, CuIrB possesses nodal chains near the Fermi energy, Pd$_7$Se$_4$ and Ag$_2$Se exhibit fourfold double Weyl points, the latter one even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, whereas the fourfold degeneracies in AuTlSb are made up from intersecting nodal lines. We propose the construction of LEGEND-1000, the ton-scale Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless $\beta \beta$ Decay. This international experiment is designed to answer one of the highest priority questions in fundamental physics. It consists of 1000 kg of Ge detectors enriched to more than 90% in the $^{76}$Ge isotope operated in a liquid argon active shield at a deep underground laboratory. By combining the lowest background levels with the best energy resolution in the field, LEGEND-1000 will perform a quasi-background-free search and can make an unambiguous discovery of neutrinoless double-beta decay with just a handful of counts at the decay $Q$ value. The experiment is designed to probe this decay with a 99.7%-CL discovery sensitivity in the $^{76}$Ge half-life of $1.3\times10^{28}$ years, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass upper limit in the range of 9-21 meV, to cover the inverted-ordering neutrino mass scale with 10 yr of live time.

A large number of particle detectors employ liquid argon as their target material owing to its high scintillation yield and its ability to drift ionization charge over large distances. Scintillation light from argon is peaked at 128 nm and a wavelength shifter is required for its efficient detection. In this work, we directly compare the light yield achieved in two identical liquid argon chambers, one of which is equipped with PolyEthylene Naphthalate (PEN) and the other with TetraPhenyl Butadiene (TPB) wavelength shifter. Both chambers are lined with enhanced specular reflectors and instrumented with SiPMs with a coverage fraction of approximately 1%, which represents a geometry comparable to the future large scale detectors. We measured the light yield of the PEN chamber to be 39.4$\pm$0.4(stat)$\pm$1.9(syst)% of the yield of the TPB chamber. Using a Monte Carlo simulation this result is used to extract the wavelength shifting efficiency of PEN relative to TPB equal to 47.2$\pm$5.7%. This result paves the way for the use of easily available PEN foils as a wavelength shifter, which can substantially simplify the construction of future liquid argon detectors., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Neural document ranking models perform impressively well due to superior language understanding gained from pre-training tasks. However, due to their complexity and large number of parameters, these (typically transformer-based) models are often non-interpretable in that ranking decisions can not be clearly attributed to specific parts of the input documents. In this paper we propose ranking models that are inherently interpretable by generating explanations as a by-product of the prediction decision. We introduce the Select-and-Rank paradigm for document ranking, where we first output an explanation as a selected subset of sentences in a document. Thereafter, we solely use the explanation or selection to make the prediction, making explanations first-class citizens in the ranking process. Technically, we treat sentence selection as a latent variable trained jointly with the ranker from the final output. To that end, we propose an end-to-end training technique for Select-and-Rank models utilizing reparameterizable subset sampling using the Gumbel-max trick. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate that our approach is competitive to state-of-the-art methods. Our approach is broadly applicable to numerous ranking tasks and furthers the goal of building models that are interpretable by design. Highly sensitive terahertz (THz) sensors for a myriad of applications are rapidly evolving. A widespread sensor concept is based on the detection of minute resonance frequency shifts due to a targeted specimen in the sensors environment. Therefore, cutting-edge high resolution continuous wave (CW) THz spectrometers provide very powerful tools to investigate the sensors' performances. However, unpredictable yet non negligible frequency drifts common to state-of-the-art CW THz spectrometers limit the sensors' accuracy for ultra-high precision sensing and metrology. Here, we overcome this deficiency by introducing an ultra-high quality (Q) THz microresonator frequency reference. Measuring the sensor's frequency shift relative to a well-defined frequency reference eliminates the unwanted frequency drift, and fully exploits the capabilities of modern CW THz spectrometers as well as THz sensors. In a proof-of-concept experiment, we demonstrate the accurate and repeated detection of minute resonance frequency shifts of less than 5MHz at 0.6THz of a THz microresonator sensor.

Recently, pre-trained contextual models, such as BERT, have shown to perform well in language related tasks. We revisit the design decisions that govern the applicability of these models for the passage re-ranking task in open-domain question answering. We find that common approaches in the literature rely on fine-tuning a pre-trained BERT model and using a single, global representation of the input, discarding useful fine-grained relevance signals in token- or sentence-level representations. We argue that these discarded tokens hold useful information that can be leveraged. In this paper, we explicitly model the sentence-level representations by using Dynamic Memory Networks (DMNs) and conduct empirical evaluation to show improvements in passage re-ranking over fine-tuned vanilla BERT models by memory-enhanced explicit sentence modelling on a diverse set of open-domain QA datasets. We further show that freezing the BERT model and only training the DMN layer still comes close to the original performance, while improving training efficiency drastically. This indicates that the usual fine-tuning step mostly helps to aggregate the inherent information in a single output token, as opposed to adapting the whole model to the new task, and only achieves rather small gains., Comment: LWDA 2021 workshop paper

A new concept for the simultaneous detection of primary and secondary scintillation in time projection chambers is proposed. Its core element is a type of very-thick GEM structure supplied with transparent electrodes and machined from a polyethylene naphthalate plate, a natural wavelength-shifter. Such a device has good prospects for scalability and, by virtue of its genuine optical properties, it can improve on the light collection efficiency, energy threshold and resolution of conventional micropattern gas detectors. This, together with the intrinsic radiopurity of its constituting elements, offers advantages for noble gas and liquid based time projection chambers, used for dark matter searches and neutrino experiments. The DEAP-3600 detector searches for the scintillation signal from dark matter particles scattering on a 3.3 tonne liquid argon target. The largest background comes from $^{39}$Ar beta decays and is suppressed using pulseshape discrimination (PSD). We use two types of PSD algorithm: the prompt-fraction, which considers the fraction of the scintillation signal in a narrow and a wide time window around the event peak, and the log-likelihood-ratio, which compares the observed photon arrival times to a signal and a background model. We furthermore use two algorithms to determine the number of photons detected at a given time: (1) simply dividing the charge of each PMT pulse by the charge of a single photoelectron, and (2) a likelihood analysis that considers the probability to detect a certain number of photons at a given time, based on a model for the scintillation pulseshape and for afterpulsing in the light detectors. The prompt-fraction performs approximately as well as the log-likelihood-ratio PSD algorithm if the photon detection times are not biased by detector effects.
