Abstract

The photochemistry of selected N-silylalkyl-substituted phthalimides and maleimides is examined to analyze the generality and preparative consequences of a solvent effect on excited-state reaction chemoselectivities and quantum efficiencies. This solvent effect is observed in the photochemistry of N-((trimethylsilyl)butyl)phthalimide 10 and in the photochemistry of the N-silylpropyl-maleimide. The results show the generality of the solvent effect and how it can be applied to improve the preparative utility of the photochemistry of N-(silylalkyl)phthalimides and N-(silylalkyl)maleimides.

Abstract

Methamphetamine (METH) enhances dopamine (DA) transmission in the mesolimbic system implicated in its reinforcing effects. Our previous studies have shown that acupuncture attenuates drug-seeking behaviors by modulating GABAergic transmission in the ventral tegmental area and DA release in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) of the striatum. The effects of acupuncture on METH-induced behaviors and its mediation by neural pathways remain a relatively understudied area of research. The central amygdala (CeA) plays a critical role in physiological and behavioral responses to somatosensory and drug stimuli and has been implicated in negative reinforcement. Thus, we evaluated the role of the CeA in acupuncture effects on locomotor activity, positive affective states, and DA release in the NAc following acute administration of METH. Acupuncture at acupoint HT7 reduced locomotor activity, 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), and NAc DA release following systemic injection of METH, which was prevented by electrolytic lesions or optogenetic inhibition of the CeA. Acupuncture alone excited CeA neurons and reversed the suppression of CeA neurons induced by METH. These results suggest that acupuncture can relieve psychomotor responses and positive affective states following METH by inhibiting NAc DA release and this effect is mediated by activation of CeA neurons.

Abstract

Objective Methamphetamine is a drug abused worldwide. Even though its abuse is a serious problem in many countries, there are few safe and effective therapies to treat addiction. In a previous study, music therapy attenuated relapse to morphine. Based on the study, we investigated whether music therapy suppresses the reinstatement of methamphetamine self-administration behavior. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to intravenously self-administer methamphetamine (0.1 mg/kg) using a fixed ratio 1 schedule in a daily 2 h session. Following 3 weeks of training, rats who had established a stable daily intake were subjected to extinction for 1 week. On the next day, priming injection was performed to induce reinstatement. Music therapy was played twice daily during the extinction period and immediately before the test session. In the second experiment, the selective GABAA and GABAB receptor antagonists were treated prior to the last music therapy to investigate a possible neuronal mechanism. Immunofluorescence was performed to immunohistochemically examine the behavioral effects. Results The meditation music by Young-Dong Kim but not the control music by Jeff Beck reduced active lever responding during the reinstatement session. And the effects of music therapy were blocked by GABA receptors antagonists. Also, immunofluorescence showed the pattern of c-Fos expression in the nucleus accumbens paralleled the behavioral results. Conclusion Results of the present study suggest that meditation music by Young-Dong Kim can be a useful therapy to prevent the reinstatement of methamphetamine addiction during abstinence.

Blue micro-light-emitting diodes (μLED)-integrated gas sensors were fabricated as monolithic structure by directly loading sensing materials onto the μLED.SnO2nanoparticles are activated by blue μLED and exhibit outstanding sensitivity to NO2at μ-Watt power levels.Noble metal (Au, Pd, Pt)-decorated SnO2showed the tunable gas selectivity for 4 target gases under blue light illumination.

Abstract

Acupuncture has been used to treat a variety of diseases and symptoms for more than 2,500 years. While a number of studies have shown that nerves are responsible for initiating the effects of acupuncture, several lines of study have emphasized the role of connective tissue in the initiation of acupuncture signals. To determine whether nerves or connective tissue mediate the action of acupuncture, we constructed a robotic acupuncture needle twister that mimicked the twisting of the needle by an acupuncturist, and we examined the role of nerves and connective tissues in the generation of acupuncture effects in rat cocaine-induced locomotion, stress-induced hypertension, and mustard oil-induced visceral pain models. Robotic or manual twisting of acupuncture needles effectively suppressed cocaine-induced hyperactivity, elevated systemic blood pressure or mustard oil-induced visceral pain in rats. These acupuncture effects were completely abolished by injecting bupivacaine, a local anesthetic, into acupoints. However, disruption of connective tissue by injecting type I collagenase into acupoints did not affect these acupuncture effects. Our findings suggest that nerve tissue, but not connective tissue, is responsible for generating the effects of acupuncture.

Abstract

A thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) with an alkyl side-group was synthesized. Blends of the LCP with polycarbonate (PC) were prepared by coprecipitation from a common solvent. The rheological behavior of the LCP/PC blends was found to be very different from that of PC, and significant viscosity reductions were observed in the temperature range of 200-230 ° C. Blends of different LCP compositions were extruded with different draw ratio from a capillary rheometer. The ultimate tensile strength showed a maximum at a 10 wt% LCP composition in the blends. It decreased for compositions greater the 10 wt% LCP, whereas the initial modulus increased with increasing LCP content. The morphology of the blends was found to be affected by their compositions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies revealed finely dispersed spherical LCP domains in the PC matrix. Abstract

Growing bioenergy crops on degraded and underutilized land is a promising solution to meet the requirement for energy security, food security, and land restoration. This paper assesses the socioeconomic and environmental benefits of agroforestry systems based on nyamplung (tamanu) (Calophyllum inophyllum L.) in the Wonogiri district of Central Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through field observations and focus group discussions involving 20 farmers who intercrop nyamplung with maize, rice, and peanuts and utilize the species in honey production. Calculating each crop's net present value (NPV) demonstrates that when grown as monocultures, staple crops rice and peanuts lead to negative profitability, while maize generates only a marginal profit; yet honey production utilizing nyamplung produces a NPV nearly 300 times greater than maize. However, when utilizing nyamplung, honey is also the commodity most sensitive to decreases in production, followed by nyamplung-peanut and nyamplung-rice combinations. While decreases in production have little effect on the NPVs of rice, peanuts, and maize, these annual crops can only be cultivated for a maximum of 6 years within the nyamplung's 35-year cycle, due to canopy closure after this time. Nyamplung-based agroforestry systems can provide economic, social, and environmental gains on different scales. However, when considering the high profit potential of nyamplung combined with honey production, further research is needed to improve and develop bee husbandry practices so this becomes a viable option for local farmers.

Abstract

AbstractAlthough ApiosporaSacc. has previously been considered a sexual morph of Arthriniumspecies on the basis of phylogenetic, morphological, and ecological diagnoses, a recent study delimited these as different species. Recently, 14 species, including eight new species, of marine Arthriniumhave been reported from Korea. Six known species have previously been renamed as species in the genus Apiospora(A. arundinis, A. marii, A. piptatheri, A. rasikravindrae, A. sacchari, and A. saccharicola). However, the eight new species of marine Arthrinium(Ar. agari, Ar. arctoscopi, Ar. fermenti, Ar. koreanum, Ar. marinum, Ar. pusillispermum, Ar. sargassi, and Ar. taeanense) are yet to be studied, and thus the taxonomic status of these species remains to be clarified. In this study, we conducted phylogenetic analyses using the internal transcribed spacer, 28S large subunit ribosomal RNA gene, translation elongation factor 1-alpha, and beta-tubulin regions to confirm the phylogenetic position of these eight species. Based on these analyses, we re-identified the eight Arthriniumspecies as new combinations in Apiospora. Additionally, among the six known Apiosporaspecies, two (A. piptatheriand A. rasikravindrae) have not previously been recorded in Korea. On the basis of morphological and molecular analyses, we report these as new species in Korea. Herein, we present scanning electron micrographs detailing the morphologies of these species, along with phylogenetic trees and detailed descriptions.

Abstract

This study optimizes furfural production from pentose released in the liquid hydrolysate of hardwood using an aqueous biphasic system. Dilute acid pretreatment with 4% sulfuric acid was conducted to extract pentose from liquid Quercus mongolica hydrolysate. To produce furfural from xylose, a xylose standard solution with the same acid concentration of the liquid hydrolysate and extracting solvent (tetrahydrofuran) were applied to the aqueous biphasic system. A response surface methodology was adopted to optimize furfural production in the aqueous biphasic system. A maximum furfural yield of 72.39% was achieved at optimal conditions as per the RSM; a reaction temperature of 170 °C, reaction time of 120 min, and a xylose concentration of 10 g/L. Tetrahydrofuran, toluene, and dimethyl sulfoxide were evaluated to understand the effects of the solvent on furfural production. Tetrahydrofuran generated the highest furfural yield, while DMSO gave the lowest yield. A furfural yield of 68.20% from pentose was achieved in the liquid hydrolysate of Quercus mongolica under optimal conditions using tetrahydrofuran as the extracting solvent. The aqueous and tetrahydrofuran fractions were separated from the aqueous biphasic solvent by salting out using sodium chloride, and 94.63% of the furfural produced was drawn out through two extractions using tetrahydrofuran. 소아 양극성장애는 심각한 기능 손상을 야기하며 초기 성인기까지 연결된다는 의견이 지배적이다. 480명의 성인 양극성장애 환자를 대상으로 한 후향적 연구에 따르면 소아 기에 발병한 경우 성인기에 발병한 경우보다 더 잦은 조증, 우 울증 삽화를 보이며, 다른 정신 질환의 동반이 더 흔하고, 급 속 순환형이 더 많았다. 1,000명의 성인을 대상으로 한 Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder 연구에서도 조기 발병 양극성장애 환자에서 불안증과 물질 남용이 더 흔히 동반되었고, 기분 삽화가 더 잦았으며, 정상기분 상태의 기간이 짧았고, 자살 시도 및 폭력 행사의 발생률이 더 컸다. 취학 전, 사춘기 전, 사춘기의 소아청소년에서 양극성장애 로 인하여 심각한 정서적, 학업적, 사회적 기능 손상을 보인다 는 연구는 많았으며, 소아 양극성장애에서 약물 치료의 유 용성을 보여주는 연구도 있다. 현재까지 소아청소년 양극 성장애의 약물 치료에 대한 근거는 충분하지 않으며, 주로 성 인의 치료를 바탕으로 하고 있다. 리튬, 리스페리돈, 올란자 핀, 퀘티이핀, 아리피프라졸이 소아 양극성장애에서 Food and Drug Administration(FDA)의 승인을 받은 상태이며 2007 년 American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP)에서 발행한 권고안에 따르면, 소아청소년 양극성 장애의 치료로 리튬이나 valproic acid와 같은 전통적인 기분 소아청소년 양극성장애 입원 환자의 약물 사용 특성
