Abstract

A comparison of surface pressure coefficient measurements obtained using pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) measurements with predictions from the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FUN3D is presented for the NASA SLS Block 1B crew vehicle. Overall, the flow features over the SLS configuration were captured by both the PSP data and CFD data at freestream Mach numbers (M(sub ∞)) of 0.8 and 1.3. Overall, the flow features over the SLS are captured by the PSP data but the intensities of large pressure gradients are less intense than what was predicted by the CFD data. Several examples of this observation are given including the flow interaction at the booster nose cone edge, core body, and forward booster attachment hardware at M(sub ∞) = 0.8.

Abstract

NASA’s Transformational Tools and Technologies Project (T(cu.) is supporting a substantial effort to investigate the formation and origin of separation bubbles found on wing-body juncture zones: the Juncture Flow experiment. The first phase of the Juncture Flow experiment, performed in NASA Langley’s 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel, has been completed. This paper documents the CFD analysis done in conjunction with the experiment. Comparisons between CFD simulations and wind tunnel experimental results will be shown. Oil flow results, surface pressure cuts, velocity profiles, and Reynolds stress profiles will be compared. Preliminary results analyzing the effect of grid resolution, wind tunnel walls, and turbulence models on the above data will be presented. The results are not meant to be a validation study, but more as an evaluation of the current status of Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) CFD simulations.

Abstract

The Space Launch System Aerodynamics Task Team is responsible for delivering aerodynamic force and moment databases from liftoff through ascent until the rocket leaves the Earth’s atmosphere. The process for developing the ascent portion of this database is described in the current paper. The data used to develop the database were generated using a combination of wind tunnel testing and CFD simulations. The details of the wind tunnel testing performed at the NASA Ames Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel and CFD simulations performed using FUN3D at wind tunnel and flight conditions are discussed, and comparisons of these data sets are provided. The methods used for converting the source data into the final database response surfaces with corresponding uncertainty are also detailed.

165. Evaluating Epidemiologic Trends and Variations in NICU Admissions in California, 2008 to 2018

Abstract

Previous research suggests increasing numbers of and variation in NICU admissions. We explored whether these trends were reflected in California by examining NICU admissions and birth data in aggregate and among patient and hospital subpopulations more susceptible to variations in care.In this retrospective cohort study, we evaluated NICU utilization between 2008 and 2018 for all live births at hospitals that provide data to the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative. We compared hospital- and admission-level data across birth weight (BW), gestational age (GA), and illness acuity categories. Trends were analyzed by using linear regression models.We identified 472 402 inborn NICU admissions and 3 960 441 live births across 144 hospitals. Yearly trends in NICU admissions remained stable among all births and higher acuity births (mean admission rates 11.9% and 4.1%, respectively). However, analysis of the higher acuity births revealed significant increases in NICU admission rates for neonates with higher BW and GA (BW ≥ 2500g: 1.8% in 2008, 2.1% in 2018; GA ≥ 37 weeks: 1.5% in 2010, 1.8% in 2018). Kaiser hospitals had a decreasing trend of NICU admissions compared to non-Kaiser hospitals (Kaiser: 13.9% in 2008, 10.1% in 2018; non-Kaiser: 11.3% in 2008, 12.3% in 2018).Overall NICU admission rates in California were stable from 2008–2018. However, trends similar to national patterns emerged when stratified by infant GA, BW, and illness acuity as well as Kaiser or non-Kaiser hospitals, with increasing admission rates for infants born at higher BW and GA and within non-Kaiser hospitals.

Abstract

Objective This study was aimed to determine factors associated with attendance at the second high-risk infant follow-up (HRIF) visit (V2) by 20 months of corrected age after a successful first visit (V1), and the impact of rural residence on attendance rates in a statewide population of very low birth weight (VLBW; <1,500 g) infants. Study Design Data linked from the California Perinatal Quality of Care Collaborative (CPQCC) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) database and CPQCC-California Children's Services (CCS) HRIF database. Multivariable logistic regression evaluated independent associations of sociodemographic, maternal, family, neonatal clinical, and individual HRIF program differences (factors) with successful V2 in VLBW infants born in 2010 to 2012. Results Of 7,295 eligible VLBW infants, 75% (5,475) attended V2. Sociodemographic factors independently associated with nonattendance included maternal race of Black (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.61; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.5–0.75), public insurance (aOR = 0.79; 95% CI: 0.69–0.91), and rural residence (aOR = 0.74; 95% CI: 0.61–0.9). Factors identified at V1that were associated with V2 attendance included attending V1 within the recommended window (aOR = 2.34; 95% CI: 1.99–2.75) and early intervention enrollment (aOR = 1.39; 95% CI: 1.12–1.61). Neonatal factors associated with attendance included birth weight ≤750 g (aOR = 1.83; 95% CI: 1.48–2.5). There were significant program differences with risk-adjusted rates ranging from 43.7 to 99.7%. Conclusion Sociodemographic disparities and HRIF program factors are associated with decreased attendance at V2 among VLBW infants. These findings highlight opportunities for quality and process improvement interventions starting in the NICU and continuing through transition to home and community to assure participation in HRIF. 180. Computational Study of Flow Interactions in Coaxial Rotors

Abstract

Although the first idea of coaxial rotors appeared more than 150 years ago, most helicopters have used single main-rotor/tail-rotor combination. Since reactive moments of coaxial rotors are canceled by contra-rotation, no tail rotor is required to counter the torque generated by the main rotor. Unlike the single main rotor design that distributes power to both main and tail rotors, all of the power for coaxial rotors is used for vertical thrust. Thus, no power is wasted for anti-torque or directional control. The saved power helps coaxial rotors reach a higher hover ceiling than single rotor helicopters. Another advantage of coaxial rotors is that the overall rotor diameter can be reduced for a given vehicle gross weight because each rotor provides a maximum contribution to vertical thrust to overcome vehicle weight. However, increased mechanical complexity of the hub has been one of the challenges for manufacturing coaxial rotorcraft. Only the Kamov Design Bureau of Russia had been notably successful in production of coaxial helicopters until Sikorsky built X2, an experimental compound helicopter. Recent developments in unmanned aircraft systems and high-speed rotorcraft have renewed interest in the coaxial configuration. Multi-rotors are frequently used for small electric unmanned rotorcraft partly due to mechanical simplicity. The use of multiple motors provides redundancy as well as cost-efficiency. The multi-rotor concept has rarely been used until recently because of its inherent stability and control problems. However, advances in inexpensive electronic flight control systems have opened the floodgates for small drones using multirotors. Coaxial rotors have started to appear in some multi-rotor configurations. Small coaxial rotors have often been designed using a hundred year old approach that is "sketch, build, fly, and iterate." In that approach, there is no systematic way to explore trade-offs or determine logical next steps. It is neither possible to account for multiple real-world constraints up front in design nor possible to know what performance is possible with a given design. Since unmanned vehicles are sized and optimized for the particular mission, a modern low-fidelity conceptual design and sizing tool that has been used for the design of large helicopters can be used for design of small coaxial rotorcraft. However, unlike most helicopters with single main rotor, the interactions between the upper and lower rotors emerge as an important factor to consider in design because an increase in performance of a multi-rotor system is not proportional to the number of rotors. Interference losses and differences in thrusts between the upper and lower rotors were investigated by theoretical methods as well as a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. In this work, hybrid turbulence models are used to investigate the physics of interactions between coaxial rotors and a fuselage that are not well understood. Present study covers not only small-scale drones but also large-scale coaxial rotors for heavy-lifting missions. Considering the recently proposed FAA drone rules that require the flight only in visual line-of-sight, a large multirotor might be used as an airborne carrier for launch and recovery of unmanned aircraft systems with a human operator onboard. For applications to civil operations, their aerodynamic performance and noise levels need to be assessed. Noise is one of the largest limiting factors to rotorcraft operations in urban area. Since the high-frequency noise of multi-rotors may increase the annoyance, noise may turn out to be a key issue that must be addressed for market acceptability. One of the objectives of the present work is to study the effects of inter-rotor spacing and collectives on the performance, efficiency, and acoustics of coaxial rotor systems.

Abstract

This paper presents details of Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations of the Space Launch System during solid-rocket booster separation using the Cart3D inviscid and Overflow viscous CFD codes. The discussion addresses the use of multiple data sources of computational aerodynamics, experimental aerodynamics, and trajectory simulations for this critical phase of flight. Comparisons are shown between Cart3D simulations and a wind tunnel test performed at NASA Langley Research Center's Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel, and further comparisons are shown between Cart3D and viscous Overflow solutions for the flight vehicle. The Space Launch System (SLS) is a new exploration-class launch vehicle currently in development that includes two Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs) modified from Space Shuttle hardware. These SRBs must separate from the SLS core during a phase of flight where aerodynamic loads are nontrivial. The main challenges for creating a separation aerodynamic database are the large number of independent variables (including orientation of the core, relative position and orientation of the boosters, and rocket thrust levels) and the complex flow caused by exhaust plumes of the booster separation motors (BSMs), which are small rockets designed to push the boosters away from the core by firing partially in the direction opposite to the motion of the vehicle.

Abstract

Interactional aerodynamics of multi-rotor flows has been studied for a quadcopter representing a generic quad tilt-rotor aircraft in hover. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of the separation distances between rotors, and also fuselage and wings on the performance and efficiency of multirotor systems. Three-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a spatially 5th order accurate scheme, dual-time stepping, and the Detached Eddy Simulation turbulence model. The results show that the separation distances as well as the wings have significant effects on the vertical forces of quadroror systems in hover. Understanding interactions in multi-rotor flows would help improve the design of next generation multi-rotor drones.

Abstract

Wing-body juncture flow fields on commercial aircraft configurations are challenging to compute accurately. The NASA Advanced Air Vehicle Program's juncture flow committee is designing an experiment to provide data to improve Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling in the juncture flow region. Preliminary design of the model was done using CFD, yet CFD tends to over-predict the separation in the juncture flow region. Risk reduction wind tunnel tests were requisitioned by the committee to obtain a better understanding of the flow characteristics of the designed models. NASA Ames Research Center's Fluid Mechanics Lab performed one of the risk reduction tests. The results of one case, accompanied by CFD simulations, are presented in this paper. Experimental results suggest the wall mounted wind tunnel model produces a thicker boundary layer on the fuselage than the CFD predictions, resulting in a larger wing horseshoe vortex suppressing the side of body separation in the juncture flow region. Compared to experimental results, CFD predicts a thinner boundary layer on the fuselage generates a weaker wing horseshoe vortex resulting in a larger side of body separation.

OBJECTIVES: To examine how infant and maternal factors, hospital factors, and neighbourhood-level factors impact or modify racial/ethnic disparities in human milk intake at hospital discharge among very low birth weight infants. STUDY DESIGN: We studied 14,422 infants from 119 California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative NICUs born from 2008 to 2011. Maternal addresses were linked to 2010 census tract data, representing neighborhoods. We tested for associations with receiving no human milk at discharge, using multilevel cross-classified models. RESULTS: Compared with non-Hispanic whites, the adjusted odds of no human milk at discharge was higher among non-Hispanic blacks (aOR 1.33 [1.16–1.53]) and lower among Hispanics (aOR 0.83 [0.74–0.93]). Compared with infants of more educated white mothers, infants of less educated white, black, and Asian mothers had higher odds of no human milk at discharge, and infants of Hispanic mothers of all educational levels had similar odds as infants of more educated white mothers. Country of birth and neighborhood SES was also associated with disparities in human milk intake at discharge. CONCLUSIONS: Non-Hispanic blacks had the highest and Hispanic infants the lowest odds of no human milk at discharge. Maternal education and country of birth were the biggest drivers of disparities in human milk intake, suggesting the need for targeted approaches of breastfeeding support.
