Abstract

New results are presented of the 234U neutron-induced fission cross section, obtained with high accuracy in the resonance region by means of two methods using the 235U(n,f) as reference. The recent evaluation of the 235U(n,f) obtained with SAMMY by L. C. Leal et al. (these Proceedings), based on previous n_TOF data [1], has been used to calculate the 234U(n,f) cross section through the 234U/235U ratio, being here compared with the results obtained by using the n_TOF neutron flux., n_TOF Collaboration

Abstract

International audience; The $^{33} \text{S(n,} \alpha)^{30} \text{Si}$ cross section measurement, using $^{10} \text{B(n,} \alpha)$ as reference, at the n_TOF Experimental Area 2 (EAR2) facility at CERN is presented. Data from 0.01 eV to 100 keV are provided and, for the first time, the cross section is measured in the range from 0.01 eV to 10 keV. These data may be used for a future evaluation of the cross section because present evaluations exhibit large discrepancies. The $^{33} \text{S(n,} \alpha)^{30} \text{Si}$ reaction is of interest in medical physics because of its possible use as a cooperative target to boron in Neutron Capture Therapy (NCT).

Abstract

International audience; The Cosmological Lithium Problem refers to the large discrepancy between the abundance of primordial $^7$Li predicted by the standard theory of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and the value inferred from the so-called “Spite plateau” in halo stars. A possible explanation for this longstanding puzzle in Nuclear Astrophysics is related to the incorrect estimation of the destruction rate of $^7$Be, which is responsible for the production of 95% of primordial Lithium. While charged-particle induced reactions have mostly been ruled out, data on the $^7 \text{Be(n,} \alpha)$ and $^7 \text{Be(n,p)}$ reactions are scarce or completely missing, so that a large uncertainty still affects the abundance of $^7$Li predicted by the standard theory of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. Both reactions have been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN, providing for the first time data in a wide neutron energy range.

Abstract

The energy-dependent cross section of the 7Be(n,alpha)4He reaction, of interest for the so-called Cosmological Lithium Problem in Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, has been measured for the first time from 10 meV to 10 keV neutron energy. The challenges posed by the short half-life of 7Be and by the low reaction cross section have been overcome at n_TOF thanks to an unprecedented combination of the extremely high luminosity and good resolution of the neutron beam in the new experimental area (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN, the availability of a sufficient amount of chemically pure 7Be, and a specifically designed experimental setup. Coincidences between the two alpha-particles have been recorded in two Si-7Be-Si arrays placed directly in the neutron beam. The present results are consistent, at thermal neutron energy, with the only previous measurement performed in the 60's at a nuclear reactor. The energy dependence here reported clearly indicates the inadequacy of the cross section estimates currently used in BBN calculations. Although new measurements at higher neutron energy may still be needed, the n_TOF results hint to a minor role of this reaction in BBN, leaving the long-standing Cosmological Lithium problem unsolved. Abstract

The technique of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), offering a complementary tool for sensitive studies of key reactions in nuclear astrophysics, was applied for measurements of the C-13(n,gamma)C-14 and the N-14(n,p)C-14 cross sections, which act as a neutron poison in s-process nucleosynthesis. Solid samples were irradiated at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology with neutrons closely resembling a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution for kT = 25 keV, and also at higher energies between En = 123 and 182 keV. After neutron irradiation the produced amount of C-14 in the samples was measured by AMS at the Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator (VERA) facility. For both reactions the present results provide important improvements compared to previous experimental data, which were strongly discordant in the astrophysically relevant energy range and missing for the comparably strong resonances above 100 keV. For C-13(n,gamma) we find a four times smaller cross section around kT = 25 keV than a previous measurement. For N-14(n,p), the present data suggest two times lower cross sections between 100 and 200 keV than had been obtained in previous experiments and data evaluations. The effect of the new stellar cross sections on the s process in low-mass asymptotic giant branch stars was studied for stellar models of 2 M-circle dot initial mass, and solar and 1/10th solar metallicity.

158. Recent results in nuclear astrophysics at the n-TOF facility at CERN

Abstract

The neutron time of flight (n-TOF) facility at CERN is a spallation source characterized by a white neutron spectrum. The innovative features of the facility, in the two experimental areas, (20 m and 185 m), allow for an accurate determination of the neutron cross section for radioactive samples or for isotopes with small neutron capture cross section, of interest for Nuclear Astrophysics. The recent results obtained at n-TOF facility are presented.

Abstract

In stellar environments neutron capture reactions produce 99% of all elements heavier than iron. In the slow neutron capture process (s-process) lighter isotopes, especially those with high abundances and large neutron capture cross sections, act as “neutron poisons” by reducing the number of available neutrons and hence, decreasing the production of the heavier nuclei. 35Cl, which is produced in advanced burning phases of stars, contributes to the poisoning effect. Accordingly, its Maxwellian-averaged cross section (MACS) is of significant astrophysical interest. A combination of activation technique and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) was used for the determination of the MACS of 35Cl(n,gamma)36Cl. NaCl pellets were irradiated at KIT and SARAF-LiLiT (Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility-Liquid-Lithium Target) with a quasi-Maxwellian neutron energy distribution of 25 keV. The neutron fluence was monitored by gold foils. AMS measurements at VERA (Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator), the DREAMS (DREsden AMS) facility and the ANU Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility quantified the 36Cl/35Cl ratio of the samples. The product of the neutron fluence and the isotopic ratio gives the spectrum-averaged cross section of the reaction. By normalizing this value to a real Maxwellian spectrum a new value for the 25 keV MACS of (9.5±0.4) mb for the reaction 35Cl(n,gamma)36Cl was obtained. Neutron capture cross sections are the key nuclear physics input to study the slow neutron capture process, which is responsible for forming about half of the elemental abundances above Fe. Stellar neutron capture cross section can be measured by the time-of-flight technique, or by activation. Both techniques will be discussed and recent experiments in the Fe/Ni mass region will be presented.

Abstract

The energy-dependent cross section of the 7Be (n ,α )4He reaction, of interest for the so-called cosmological lithium problem in big bang nucleosynthesis, has been measured for the first time from 10 meV to 10 keV neutron energy. The challenges posed by the short half-life of 7Be and by the low reaction cross section have been overcome at n_TOF thanks to an unprecedented combination of the extremely high luminosity and good resolution of the neutron beam in the new experimental area (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN, the availability of a sufficient amount of chemically pure 7Be, and a specifically designed experimental setup. Coincidences between the two alpha particles have been recorded in two Si -7Be -Si arrays placed directly in the neutron beam. The present results are consistent, at thermal neutron energy, with the only previous measurement performed in the 1960s at a nuclear reactor. The energy dependence reported here clearly indicates the inadequacy of the cross section estimates currently used in BBN calculations. Although new measurements at higher neutron energy may still be needed, the n_TOF results hint at a minor role of this reaction in BBN, leaving the long-standing cosmological lithium problem unsolved.

Abstract

Recently, intense interest in the potential use of neural stem cells (NSC) in the clinical therapy of brain disease and injury has resulted in rapid progress in research on the properties of NSC, their innate and directed differentiation potential and the induced reprogramming of differentiated somatic cells to revert to a pluripotent NSC-like state. The aim of this review is to give an overview of our current operational definitions of the NSC lineage, the growing understanding of extrinsic and intrinsic mechanisms, including heritable but reversible epigenetic chromatin modifications that regulate the maintenance and differentiation of NSC in vivo, and to emphasize ground-breaking efforts of cellular reprogramming with the view to generating patient-specific stem cells for cell replacement therapy. This is set against a summary of current practical procedures for the isolation, research and application of NSC, and of the state of the art in NSC-based regenerative medicine of the nervous system. Both provide the backdrop for the translation of recent findings into innovative clinical applications, with the hope of increasing the safety, efficiency and ethical acceptability of NSC-based therapies in the near future.

Abstract

Astrophysical x-ray bursts are thought to be a result of thermonuclear explosions on the atmosphere of an accreting neutron star. Between these bursts, energy is thought to be generated by the hot CNO cycles. The O-15(alpha,gamma)Ne-19 reaction is one reaction that allows breakout from these CNO cycles and into the rp-process to fuel outbursts. The reaction is expected to be dominated by a single 3/2(+) resonance at 4.033 MeV in Ne-19, however, limited information is available on this key state. This work reports on a pioneering study of the Ne-20(p, d)Ne-19 reaction, performed in inverse kinematics at the experimental storage ring (ESR) as a means of accessing the astrophysically important 4.033 MeV state in Ne-19. The unique, background free, high luminosity conditions of the storage ring were utilized for this, the first transfer reaction performed at the ESR. The results of this pioneering test experiment are presented along with suggestions for future measurements at storage ring facilities.

Abstract

Routine measurements of 36Cl at the Dresden Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (DREAMS) facility have resulted in an astrophysical application: the determination of the Maxwellian averaged cross-section (MACS) of the reaction 35Cl(n,γ)36Cl. As 35Cl acts as a neutron poison in the nucleosynthesis processes during later burning phases of stars, the reaction is important for astrophysical calculations of elemental abundances. The neutron irradiations with a quasi Maxwell Boltzmann spectrum for the production of 36Cl were performed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility. AMS measurements were performed at VERA and DREAMS and are planned at the Australian National University in 2015. Acknowledgement: Alberto Mengoni, CERN.

Abstract

The U238 to U235 fission cross section ratio has been determined at n_TOF up to ≈1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four datasets has been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3–4%. The data collected at n_TOF have been suitably combined to yield a unique fission cross section ratio as a function of neutron energy. The result confirms current evaluations up to 200 MeV. Good agreement is also observed with theoretical calculations based on the INCL++/Gemini++ combination up to the highest measured energy. The n_TOF results may help solve a long-standing discrepancy between the two most important experimental datasets available so far above 20 MeV, while extending the neutron energy range for the first time up to ≈1 GeV.

Abstract

A γ-ray spectroscopy study of excited states in Si26 has been performed by using the Mg24(3He,n) reaction at a beam energy of 10 MeV. In particular, states have been studied above the proton threshold relevant for burning in the Al25(p,γ)Si26 reaction in novae. This reaction influences the amount of Al26 injected into the interstellar medium by novae, which contributes to the overall flux of cosmic γ-ray emission from Al26 observed in satellite missions. The present results point strongly to the existence of a 0+ state at an excitation energy of 5890 keV lying within the Gamow burning window, which raises questions about the existence and properties of another, higher-lying state reported in previous experimental work. The existence of two such states within this excitation energy region cannot be understood within the framework of sd-shell-model calculations. © 2015 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The 238U to 23577 U fission cross section ratio has been determined at n_TOF up to 1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four data sets has been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3-4%. The data collected at n_TOF have been suitably combined to yield a unique fission cross section ratio as a function of neutron energy. The result confirms current evaluations up to 200 MeV. Good agreement is also observed with theoretical calculations based on the INCL++/Gemini++ combination up to the highest measured energy. The n_TOF results may help solving a long-standing discrepancy between the two most important experimental datasets available so far above 20 MeV, while extending the neutron energy range for the first time up to 1 GeV., JRC.D.4-Standards for Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards

Abstract

A prototype composed of four resistive plate chamber layers has been exposed to quasi-monoenergetic neutrons produced from a deuteron beam of varying energy (300 to 1500 AMeV) in experiment S406 at GSI, Darmstad, Germany. Each layer, with an active area of about 2000 × 500 mm2, is made of modules containing the active gaps, all in multigap construction. Each gap is defined by 0.3 mm nylon mono-filaments positioned between 2.85 mm thick float glass electrodes. The modules are operated in avalanche mode with a non-flammable gas mixture composed of 90% C2H2F4 and 10% SF6. The signals are readout by a pick-up electrode formed by 15 copper strips (per layer), spaced at a pitch of 30 mm, connected at both sides to timing front end electronics. Measurements of the time of flight jitter of neutrons, in the mentioned energy range, point to a contribution of the resistive plate chamber in the order of 150 ps, independent of the neutron energy.

Abstract

Inhibition of motor protein activity has been linked with defects in the formation of poles in the spindle of dividing cells. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the functional relationship between motor activity and centrosome dynamics have remained uncharacterised. Here, we characterise KIFC5A, a mouse kinesin-like protein that is highly expressed in dividing cells and tissues, and is subject to developmental and cell-type-specific regulation. KIFC5A is a minus-end-directed, microtubule-dependent motor that produces velocities of up to 1.26 μm minute-1 in gliding assays and possesses microtubule bundling activity. It is nuclear in interphase, localises to the centre of the two microtubule asters at the beginning of mitosis, and to spindle microtubules in later mitotic phases. Overexpression of KIFC5A in mouse cells causes the formation of aberrant, non-separated microtubule asters and mitotic arrest in a prometaphase-like state. KIFC5A knockdown partly rescues the phenotype caused by inhibition of plus-end-directed motor Eg5 by monastrol on the mitotic spindle, indicating that it is involved in the balance of forces determining bipolar spindle assembly and integrity. Silencing of KIFC5A also results in centrosome amplification detectable throughout the cell cycle. Supernumerary centrosomes arise primarily as a result of reduplication and partly as a result of cytokinesis defects. They contain duplicated centrioles and have the ability to organise microtubule asters, resulting in the formation of multipolar spindles. We show that KIFC5A interacts with nucleotide-binding proteins 1 and 2 (Nubp1 and Nubp2), which have extensive sequence similarity to prokaryotic division-site-determining protein MinD. Nubp1 and Nubp2 also interact with each other. Knockdown of Nubp1 or double knockdown of Nubp1 and Nubp2 (Nubp1&Nubp2) both phenocopy the KIFC5A silencing effect. These results implicate KIFC5A and the Nubp proteins in a common regulatory pathway involved in the control of centrosome duplication in mammalian cells.
