Ovulation in European eel is induced by injection of 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) as the maturation-inducing hormone (MIH). Female eels need to ovulate within 18 h after injection to release good quality eggs. Progesterone (P), as an upstream precursor of DHP, may promote endogenous DHP production and improve egg quality. The purpose of this study was therefore to compare treatment of P with DHP on batch level, in vitro, to determine dose-response effects, and in vivo, at a single dose. For the in vitro experiment, ovarian tissue was extracted and placed in culture plates containing hormone-free medium and media supplemented with the treatment: DHP at 1, 10 and 100 ng mL−1, or P at 10, 100 and 1,000 ng mL−1. At the start of incubation, the folliculated oocytes were sampled for histology, microscopy and qPCR. After incubation for 12 and 18 h, the oocytes were sampled for microscopy and qPCR analysis. For the in vivo experiment, females were either injected with DHP or P at a dose of 2 mg kg−1 to assess their effects on ovulation and reproductive success. At the moment of release, eggs were sampled for RNA sequencing to compare effects of DHP and P on the expression of genes involved in egg quality aspects. Remaining eggs were fertilized and larval viability was recorded. Both DHP and P were able to induce GVBD (DHP at 10 and 100 ng mL−1, P at 100 and 1,000 ng mL−1) in vitro. Expression of genes involved in oocyte maturation and ovulation was similar in vitro for both DHP and P treatments. Regarding the in vivo results, RNAseq results reflected similar DHP and P effects on the expression of genes involved in egg quality aspects. Females injected with either DHP or P ovulated, released eggs, and were equally able to produce larvae without any differences in reproductive success. Our results support the conclusion that DHP and P work equally well in vitro and in vivo. P is more attractive to apply as the price is 3,000 times lower than the price of DHP.

Genetics ,Neuroscience ,Medicine - Abstract
Protein aggregation is a hallmark of many neurodegenerative disorders, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Although mutations in TARDBP, encoding transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43), account for less than 1% of all ALS cases, TDP-43–positive aggregates are present in nearly all ALS patients, including patients with sporadic ALS (sALS) or carrying other familial ALS–causing (fALS-causing) mutations. Interestingly, TDP-43 inclusions are also present in subsets of patients with frontotemporal dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease; therefore, methods of activating intracellular protein quality control machinery capable of clearing toxic cytoplasmic TDP-43 species may alleviate disease-related phenotypes. Here, we identify a function of nemo-like kinase (Nlk) as a negative regulator of lysosome biogenesis. Genetic or pharmacological reduction of Nlk increased lysosome formation and improved clearance of aggregated TDP-43. Furthermore, Nlk reduction ameliorated pathological, behavioral, and life span deficits in 2 distinct mouse models of TDP-43 proteinopathy. Because many toxic proteins can be cleared through the autophagy/lysosome pathway, targeted reduction of Nlk represents a potential approach to therapy development for multiple neurodegenerative disorders.

Abstract Background Burnout is an increasing public health concern that afflicts employees globally. The measurement of burnout is not without criticism, specifically in the context of its operational definition as a syndrome, also recently designated as such by the World Health Organisation. The Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT-23) is a new measure for burnout that addresses many of the criticisms surrounding burnout scales. The aim of this study is to determine the validity, reliability, and measurement invariance of the BAT-23 in South Africa. Method A quantitative, cross-sectional survey, approach was taken (n = 1048). Latent variable modelling was implemented to investigate the construct-relevant multidimensionality that is present in the BAT. For measurement invariance, the configural, metric, scalar, and strict models were tested. Results The analyses showed that the hierarchical operationalisation of BAT-assessed burnout was the most appropriate model for the data. Specifically, a bifactor ESEM solution. Composite reliability estimates were all well above the cut-off criteria for both the global burnout factor and the specific factors. The measurement invariance tests showed that gender achieved not only strong invariance, but also strict invariance. However, ethnicity initially only showed strong invariance, but a test of partial strict invariance did show that the mean scores could be fairly compared between the groups when releasing certain constraints. Conclusions The BAT-23 is a valid and reliable measure to investigate burnout within the Southern African context.

Chronic pain ,Postoperative pain ,Frailty ,Elderly ,Anesthesiology ,RD78.3-87.3 - Abstract
Abstract Background Chronic pain after cardiac surgery, whether or not related to the operation, is common and has negative impact on health related quality of life (HRQL). Frailty is a risk factor for adverse surgical outcomes, but its relationship with chronic pain after cardiac surgery is unknown. This study aimed to address the association between frailty and chronic pain following cardiac surgery. Methods This sub-study of the Anesthesia Geriatric Evaluation study included 518 patients ≥ 70 years undergoing elective cardiac surgery. Pain was evaluated with the Short-Form 36 questionnaire prior to and one year after surgery. Associations between chronic postoperative pain and frailty domains, including medication use, nutritional status, mobility, physical functioning, cognition, HRQL, living situation and educational level, were investigated with multivariable regression analysis. Results Chronic pain one year after cardiac surgery was reported in 182 patients (35%). Medication use, living situation, mobility, gait speed, Nagi’s physical functioning and preoperative HRQL were frailty domains associated with chronic pain after surgery. For patients with chronic pain physical HRQL after one year was worse compared to patients without chronic pain (β –10.37, 99% CI –12.57 – –8.17). Conclusions Preoperative polypharmacy, living alone, physical frailty and lower mental HRQL are associated with chronic pain following cardiac surgery. Chronic postoperative pain is related to worse physical HRQL one year after cardiac surgery. These findings may guide future preoperative interventions to reduce chronic pain and poor HRQL after cardiac surgery in older patients. Trial Registration This trial has been registered before initiation under number NCT02535728 at clinicaltrials.gov.

Objective: to know how patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) use inhalators and to analyze most frequent errors. Methods: Crossectional descriptive study at Complejo Hospitalario San Millán-San Pedro. Two tests were done. The first one assessed theoretical knowledge on medication and inhalation technique, and inhalation devices. The second one assessed practical knowledge on inhalation technique for different devices, following Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thorax surgery recommendations. Technique was considered as incorrect if patient failed in any step. Results: 65 patients with COPD were recruited. On practical test, just 5 patients (7.7%) followed properly the inhalation technique. Errors, in order of frequency, were: not holding air after inhaling (apnoea), not move the device for a second inhalation (in pressurized devices), not exhaling air before inhalation, not moving the device for the first inhalation (in pressurized devices), not synchronizing device activation with air entrance, not energy inhaling air in powder devices. Conclusions: Most of the patients produced some error in the use of inhalator devices. So, it is necessary to provide patients with information and instructions about inhalation devices use.

Item does not contain fulltext BACKGROUND: Clinical outcomes after major surgery are poorly described at the national level. Evidence of heterogeneity between hospitals and health-care systems suggests potential to improve care for patients but this potential remains unconfirmed. The European Surgical Outcomes Study was an international study designed to assess outcomes after non-cardiac surgery in Europe. METHODS: We did this 7 day cohort study between April 4 and April 11, 2011. We collected data describing consecutive patients aged 16 years and older undergoing inpatient non-cardiac surgery in 498 hospitals across 28 European nations. Patients were followed up for a maximum of 60 days. The primary endpoint was in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcome measures were duration of hospital stay and admission to critical care. We used chi(2) and Fisher's exact tests to compare categorical variables and the t test or the Mann-Whitney U test to compare continuous variables. Significance was set at p

It has been proposed, and confirmed by multiple observations, that disks around low-mass stars display a molecule-rich emission and carbon-rich disk chemistry as compared to their hotter, more massive solar counterparts. In this work, we present JWST Disk Infrared Spectral Chemistry Survey MIRI-MRS observations of the solar-mass star DoAr 33, a low-accretion rate T Tauri star showing an exceptional carbon-rich inner disk. We report detections of H _2 O, OH, and CO _2 , as well as the more complex hydrocarbons, C _2 H _2 and C _4 H _2 . Through the use of thermochemical models, we explore different spatial distributions of carbon and oxygen across the inner disk and compare the column densities and temperatures obtained from LTE slab model retrievals. We find the best match to the observed column densities with models that have carbon enrichment, and the retrieved emitting temperature and area of C _2 H _2 with models that have C/O = 2–4 inside the 500 K carbon-rich dust sublimation line. This suggests that the origin of the carbon-rich chemistry is likely due to the sublimation of carbon-rich grains near the soot line. This would be consistent with the presence of dust processing as indicated by the detection of crystalline silicates. We propose that this long-lived hydrocarbon-rich chemistry observed around a solar-mass star is a consequence of the unusually low M-star-like accretion rate of the central star, which lengthens the radial mixing timescale of the inner disk, allowing the chemistry powered by carbon grain destruction to linger.

Over the last two decades, considerable research has built on remote sensing of spectral diversity to assess plant diversity. The spectral variation hypothesis (SVH) proposes that spatial variation in reflectance data of an area is positively associated with plant diversity. While the SVH has exhibited validity in dense forests, it performs poorly in highly fragmented and temporally dynamic agricultural landscapes covered mainly by grasslands. Such underperformance can be attributed to the mosaic-like spatial structure of human-dominated landscapes with fields in varying phenological and management stages. Therefore, we argued for re-evaluating SVH’s flawed window-based spatial analysis and underutilized temporal component. In particular, we captured the spatial and temporal variation in reflectance and assessed the relationships between spatial and temporal components of spectral diversity and plant diversity at the parcel level as a unit that relates to management patterns. Our investigation spanned three grasslands on two continents covering a wide spectrum of agricultural usage intensities. To calculate different components of spectral diversity, we used multi-temporal spaceborne Sentinel-2 data. We showed that plant diversity was negatively associated with the temporal component of spectral diversity across all sites. In contrast, the spatial component of spectral diversity was related to plant diversity in sites with larger parcels. Our findings highlighted that in agricultural landscapes, the temporal component of spectral diversity drives the spectral diversity-plant diversity associations. Consequently, our results offer a novel perspective for remote sensing of plant diversity globally.

The JWST Disk Infrared Spectral Chemistry Survey (JDISCS) aims to understand the evolution of the chemistry of inner protoplanetary disks using the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). With a growing sample of >30 disks, the survey implements a custom method to calibrate the MIRI Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) to contrasts of better than 1:300 across its 4.9–28 μ m spectral range. This is achieved using observations of Themis family asteroids as precise empirical reference sources. The high spectral contrast enables precise retrievals of physical parameters, searches for rare molecular species and isotopologues, and constraints on the inventories of carbon- and nitrogen-bearing species. JDISCS also offers significant improvements to the MRS wavelength and resolving power calibration. We describe the JDISCS calibrated data and demonstrate their quality using observations of the disk around the solar-mass young star FZ Tau. The FZ Tau MIRI spectrum is dominated by strong emission from warm water vapor. We show that the water and CO line emission originates from the disk surface and traces a range of gas temperatures of ∼500–1500 K. We retrieve parameters for the observed CO and H _2 O lines and show that they are consistent with a radial distribution represented by two temperature components. A high water abundance of n (H _2 O) ∼ 10 ^−4 fills the disk surface at least out to the 350 K isotherm at 1.5 au. We search the FZ Tau environs for extended emission, detecting a large (radius of ∼300 au) ring of emission from H _2 gas surrounding FZ Tau, and discuss its origin.

Detecting planet signatures in protoplanetary disks is fundamental to understanding how and where planets form. In this work, we report dust and gas observational hints of planet formation in the disk around 2MASS J16120668-301027, as part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Large Program “AGE-PRO: ALMA survey of Gas Evolution in Protoplanetary disks.” The disk was imaged with the ALMA at Band 6 (1.3 mm) in dust continuum emission and four molecular lines: ^12 CO( J = 2–1), ^13 CO( J = 2–1), C ^18 O( J = 2–1), and H _2 CO( J = 3 _(3,0) –2 _(2,0) ). Resolved observations of the dust continuum emission (angular resolution of ∼150 mas, 20 au) show a ring-like structure with a peak at 0.″57 (75 au), a deep gap with a minimum at 0.″24 (31 au), an inner disk, a bridge connecting the inner disk and the outer ring, along with a spiral arm structure, and a tentative detection (to 3 σ ) of a compact emission at the center of the disk gap, with an estimated dust mass of ∼2.7−12.9 Lunar masses. We also detected a kinematic kink (not coincident with any dust substructure) through several ^12 CO channel maps (angular resolution ∼200 mas, 30 au), located at a radius of ∼0.″875 (115.6 au). After modeling the ^12 CO velocity rotation around the protostar, we identified a purple tentative rotating-like structure at the kink location with a geometry similar to that of the disk. We discuss potential explanations for the dust and gas substructures observed in the disk and their potential connection to signatures of planet formation.

Emergency nurses are prone to burnout due to the nature of their profession and working environment, potentially putting their sustainable employability at risk and so too the care provided by and success of emergency departments. Psychological research has predominantly focused on samples drawn from western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) societies, concerning a small part of the world population. Consequently, this study investigated emergency nurses' burnout in a non-WEIRD society and assessed the role of job demands-resources and work capabilities on their burnout levels. A total of 204 emergency nurses in a South African context participated in a cross-sectional survey. The Job Demands-Resources Scale, the Capability Set for Work Questionnaire, and the Burnout Assessment Tool—Short Form were administered. Using and developing knowledge and skills and building and maintaining meaningful relationships were the strongest work capabilities of emergency nurses. In contrast, earning a good income, involvement in important decisions, and contributing to something valuable were the weakest capabilities. Latent class analysis resulted in three capability sets: a robust capability set, an inadequate capability set, and a weak capability set. Regarding job resources, emergency nurses with a robust capability set reported better relationships with their supervisors and higher job autonomy than the inadequate and weak capability sets. In addition, emergency nurses with a robust capability set reported better co-worker relationships and better access to good equipment than those with a weak capability set. Nurses with an inadequate capability set experienced significantly more challenging job demands than the other two sets. Finally, nurses with a weak capability set (compared to the robust capability set) experienced significantly higher levels of exhaustion and mental distance. Improving emergency nurses' job resources (especially relationships with co-workers and supervisors, job autonomy, and equipment sufficiency) would increase their capabilities, decreasing their burnout levels, especially exhaustion and mental distance.

This study focused on a positive construct of well-being, namely flourishing. In a multicultural and diverse country such as South Africa, it is a legal requirement to provide evidence that measures of psychological constructs, like flourishing, are fair, unbiased, and equivalent for diverse groups in the country. The aim was to test the psychometric properties of the Flourishing Scale, a purpose-made scale that measures positive functioning across various areas of life. This study tested the factorial validity, item bias, measurement invariance and reliability of the Flourishing Scale in a sample of 1088 South African first-year university students. A unidimensional structure was confirmed. Although three items showed statistically significant uniform and total bias for language and campus groups, the magnitude and practical impact were negligible. No evidence of bias across gender groups was found. Configural, metric and partial scalar invariance were established for language and campus groups. Full measurement invariance was established across gender groups. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.91, indicating high reliability. The study provided promising results for using the Flourishing Scale among South African university students to measure flourishing as an aspect of well-being. Contribution: This study contributes to the field of student well-being in South Africa. No studies could be found that test for item bias or measurement invariance of the Flourishing Scale, specifically for South African first-year students. This study is the first to test these psychometric properties of a Flourishing Scale in a multicultural setting for students from different languages.

BackgroundPsoriasis (PsO) is a chronic, systemic, immune-mediated disease with multiorgan involvement. Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an inflammatory arthritis that is present in 6%-42% of patients with PsO. Approximately 15% of patients with PsO have undiagnosed PsA. Predicting patients with a risk of PsA is crucial for providing them with early examination and treatment that can prevent irreversible disease progression and function loss. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to develop and validate a prediction model for PsA based on chronological large-scale and multidimensional electronic medical records using a machine learning algorithm. MethodsThis case-control study used Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database from January 1, 1999, to December 31, 2013. The original data set was split into training and holdout data sets in an 80:20 ratio. A convolutional neural network was used to develop a prediction model. This model used 2.5-year diagnostic and medical records (inpatient and outpatient) with temporal-sequential information to predict the risk of PsA for a given patient within the next 6 months. The model was developed and cross-validated using the training data and was tested using the holdout data. An occlusion sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the important features of the model. ResultsThe prediction model included a total of 443 patients with PsA with earlier diagnosis of PsO and 1772 patients with PsO without PsA for the control group. The 6-month PsA risk prediction model that uses sequential diagnostic and drug prescription information as a temporal phenomic map yielded an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.70 (95% CI 0.559-0.833), a mean sensitivity of 0.80 (SD 0.11), a mean specificity of 0.60 (SD 0.04), and a mean negative predictive value of 0.93 (SD 0.04). ConclusionsThe findings of this study suggest that the risk prediction model can identify patients with PsO at a high risk of PsA. This model may help health care professionals to prioritize treatment for target high-risk populations and prevent irreversible disease progression and functional loss.

Awake craniotomies provide unique and invaluable scientific opportunities for neurophysiological experimentation in consenting human subjects. While such experimentation carries a long history, rigorous reporting of methodologies focusing on synchronizing data across multiple platforms is not universally reported and often not translatable to across operating rooms, facilities, or behavioral tasks. Therefore, here we detail an intraoperative data synchronization methodology designed to work across multiple commercially available platforms to collect behavioral and surgical field videos, electrocorticography, brain stimulation timing, continuous finger joint angles, and continuous finger force production. Our technique was developed to be nonobstructive to operating room (OR) staff and generalizable to a variety of hand-based tasks. We hope that the detailed reporting of our methods will support the scientific rigor and reproducibility of future studies, as well as aid other groups interested in performing related experiments.

Medicine ,Science - Abstract
Vision has been shown to be an active process that can be shaped by top-down influences. Here, we add to this area of research by showing a surprising example of how visual perception can be affected by cognition (i.e., cognitive penetration). Observers were presented, on each trial, with a picture of a computer-generated football player and asked to rate the slenderness of the player on an analog scale. The results of two experiments showed that observers perceived athletes wearing small jersey numbers as more slender than those with high numbers. This finding suggests that the cognition of numbers quantitatively alters body size perception. We conjecture that this effect is the result of previously learned associations (i.e., prior expectations) affecting perceptual inference. Such associations are likely the result of implicit learning of the statistical regularities of number and size attributes co-occurrences by the nervous system. We discuss how these results are consistent with previous research on statistical learning and how they fit into the Bayesian framework of perception. The current finding supports the notion of top-down influences of cognition on perception.

Introduction: The ventral pallidum (VP) is central in the limbic Basal Ganglia circuit, controlling both appetitive (approach) and aversive (avoidance) motivated behaviors. Nevertheless, VP involvement in pathological aspects remains unclear, especially in the behavioral expression of different motivational dysfunctions. This study aimed to investigate how the VP contributes to the expression of abnormal behaviors via opposite GABAergic dysfunctions. Methods: Opposite GABAergic dysfunctions were induced by injecting muscimol (a GABAA agonist) and bicuculline (a GABAA antagonist) into monkeys. We determined the effects of both substances on self-initiated behaviors in lab-chair and in free-moving home-cage contexts in six monkeys, and in two animals performing an approach-avoidance task in appetitive and aversive contexts. Results: While the self-initiated behaviors induced by bicuculline injections in VP were characterized by compulsive behaviors such as repetitive grooming and self-biting, muscimol injections induced impulsive behaviors including limb movements in a lab-chair context and exploration behaviors in a free-moving context. More specific behavioral effects were observed in the approach-avoidance task. The muscimol injections induced premature responses and erroneous screen touches, which characterize impulsive and attention disorders, while the bicuculline injections into the VP increased passive avoidance (non-initiated action) and task-escape in an aversive context, suggesting an anxiety disorder. Conclusions: These results show that activating or blocking GABAergic transmission in the VP impairs motivated behaviors. Furthermore, the behavioral expressions produced by these opposite disturbances show that the VP could be involved in anxiety-driven compulsive disorders, such as OCD, as well as in impulsive disorders motivated by attention deficits or reward-seeking, as seen in ADHD or impulse control disorders.

Soil respiration is a significant contributor to the global emissions of CO2 and is governed by many soil factors. Reliable estimates of CO2 emission on different scales (e.g., field, regional level) are hard to obtain due to the expressed spatial and temporal variability of the CO2 flux. This study aims to investigate the spatial variability of CO2 flux and soil properties in soybean cropland on Fluvisols (Croatia). The field measurements and soil samples were taken in a regular sampling grid (2 × 2 m) with 44 points in total and the spatial variability was assessed using the kriging and cokriging techniques. The soil CO2 flux showed relatively high spatial heterogeneity, ranging from 0.03 mg/m2s to 0.40 mg/m2s. The soil organic matter content (SOM), soil water content (SWC), and soil temperature (ST) had the lower variability ranging from 2.09% to 2.52%, from 27.7% to 46.8%, and from 13.7 °C to 18.2 °C, respectively. The spatial dependence was high for CO2 flux and ST, moderate for SOM, and low for SWC. The incorporation of the auxiliary variables increased the precision of the estimations for CO2 flux, SOM, and SWC. Kriging was the most accurate method for the spatial prediction of ST. The SWC was associated as the most important factor of the CO2 fluxes, indicated by their significant negative correlation, and the highest increase of the prediction precision during spatial modeling. However, more robust co-variates should be incorporated in future models to further increase the precision.

Background: The CanMEDS physician competency framework will be updated in 2025. The revision occurs during a time of disruption and transformation to society, healthcare, and medical education caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and growing acknowledgement of the impacts of colonialism, systemic discrimination, climate change, and emerging technologies on healthcare and training. To inform this revision, we sought to identify emerging concepts in the literature related to physician competencies. Methods: Emerging concepts were defined as ideas discussed in the literature related to the roles and competencies of physicians that are absent or underrepresented in the 2015 CanMEDS framework. We conducted a literature scan, title and abstract review, and thematic analysis to identify emerging concepts. Metadata for all articles published in five medical education journals between October 1, 2018 and October 1, 2021 were extracted. Fifteen authors performed a title and abstract review to identify and label underrepresented concepts. Two authors thematically analyzed the results to identify emerging concepts. A member check was conducted. Results: 1017 of 4973 (20.5%) of the included articles discussed an emerging concept. The thematic analysis identified ten themes: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice; Anti-racism; Physician Humanity; Data-Informed Medicine; Complex Adaptive Systems; Clinical Learning Environment; Virtual Care; Clinical Reasoning; Adaptive Expertise; and Planetary Health. All themes were endorsed by the authorship team as emerging concepts. Conclusion: This literature scan identified ten emerging concepts to inform the 2025 revision of the CanMEDS physician competency framework. Open publication of this work will promote greater transparency in the revision process and support an ongoing dialogue on physician competence. Writing groups have been recruited to elaborate on each of the emerging concepts and how they could be further incorporated into CanMEDS 2025.

Rhode Island is the smallest and the second-most densely populated state in the USA. It is also one of the most severely affected states on the Eastern Seaboard due to Climate Change. While Rhode Island residents pay some of the highest energy prices in the country, its less resourceful suburban residents around the capital city, Providence, are exposed to harmful heat island effects during the summer months. As water and wastewater utility operators are often the largest energy consumers in American municipalities, water, and energy consumption exhibit directly evident connections in urban environments. In this study, we employ an Urban-Water-Energy (UWE)-Nexus approach to understand water and energy demand and their interactions in both space and time for Rhode Island; we quantify the extent and exposure of the Urban Heat Island effects among its towns and urban populations using high-resolution details.

The reality we live today shows that the quality of food is the main concern for consumers and customers, as they require more detailed information about the food they purchase; and therefore, its nature, systems and production processes, culinary traditions, and everything that highlight their characteristics and origins, achieve greater relevance among them. Situation that drives us to a non too distant future, in which all countries will establish certificates in order to commercialize food products and beverages according to recognized standards of quality control. In our territory, there are zones that can be developed as new tourism niches by embracing its touristic resources which differentiates them from each other, as in the case of Nobol canton from Guayas province, where Santa Narcisa Jesus’ remains are resting and revered by thousands of believers and devotees since her beatification in 1992. And being the cuisine of great importance to the new trends in travel and leisure, strategies are being designed to integrate the Nobol’s restoration service providers into the development of their business environment. For this reason, it is proposed a system of certification, among other strategies, which ensure food security of the final product along with what consumers today are demanding while choosing a food and beverage place; and when assurances that fit into the demanding requirements and characteristics are provided, they choose these sites.

Modulating force between the thumb and another digit, or isometric pinch individuation, is critical for daily tasks and can be impaired due to central or peripheral nervous system injury. Because surgical and rehabilitative efforts often focus on regaining this dexterous ability, we need to be able to consistently quantify pinch individuation across time and facilities. Currently, a standardized metric for such an assessment does not exist. Therefore, we tested whether we could use a commercially available flexible pressure sensor grid (Tekscan F-Socket [Tekscan Inc., Norwood, MA, USA]) to repeatedly measure isometric pinch individuation and maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) in twenty right-handed healthy volunteers at two visits. We developed a novel equation informed by the prior literature to calculate isometric individuation scores that quantified percentage of force on the grid generated by the indicated digit. MVC intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) for the left and right hands were 0.86 (p < 0.0001) and 0.88 (p < 0.0001), respectively, suggesting MVC measurements were consistent over time. However, individuation score ICCs, were poorer (left index ICC 0.41, p = 0.28; right index ICC −0.02, p = 0.51), indicating that this protocol did not provide a sufficiently repeatable individuation assessment. These data support the need to develop novel platforms specifically for repeatable and objective isometric hand dexterity assessments.
