Abstract

The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) is a new fully-automated, wide-field survey conducting a systematic exploration of the optical transient sky. The transient survey is performed using a new 8.1 square degree, 101 megapixel camera installed on the 48-inch Samuel Oschin Telescope at Palomar Observatory. The PTF Camera achieved first light at the end of 2008, completed commissioning in July 2009, and is now in routine science operations. The camera is based on the CFH12K camera, and was extensively modified for use on the 48-inch telescope. A field-flattening curved window was installed, the cooling system was re-engineered and upgraded to closed-cycle, custom shutter and filter exchanger mechanisms were added, new custom control software was written, and many other modifications were made. We here describe the performance of these new systems during the first year of Palomar Transient Factory operations, including a detailed and long term on-sky performance characterization. We also describe lessons learned during the construction and commissioning of the upgraded camera, the photometric and astrometric precision currently achieved with the PTF camera, and briefly summarize the first supernova results from the PTF survey.

Abstract

This chapter describes the results of the international option that was included in SITES 2006. The international option, which was part of the teacher questionnaire, solicited responses from teachers on satisfying experiences in their pedagogical use of ICT. Twenty-one of the participating education systems took part in this option, the purpose of which was to follow up on earlier research into innovative pedagogical practices employing substantial use of ICT that was carried out as part of SITES Module 1 and SITES Module 2 (SITES-MI and SITES-M2). In this optional component, teachers who used ICT extensively were asked to provide a brief description of the one pedagogical practice involving ICT-use in the target class that they had found the most satisfying. With the description of this practice in mind, teachers were then asked to answer questions reflecting the contribution of ICT to changes in student outcomes and to changes in teaching practices. They were also asked if students or teachers were the main people to initiate several aspects of teaching and learning. The international option aimed to help answer the following research question for SITES 2006: What ICT was used and how was it used in specific situations where ICT has been used relatively extensively within the pedagogical practice?

156. Streamflow distribution of non-point source nitrogen export from urban-rural catchments in the Chesapeake Bay watershed

Abstract

Nitrogen (N) export from urban and urbanizing watersheds is a major contributor to water quality degradation and eutrophication of receiving water bodies. Methods to reduce N exports using best management practices (BMP) have targeted both source reduction and hydrologic flow path retention. Stream restoration is a BMP targeted to multiple purposes but includes increasing flow path retention to improve water quality. As restorations are typically most effective at lower discharge rates with longer residence times, distribution of N load by stream discharge is a significant influence on catchment nitrogen retention. We explore impacts of urbanization on magnitude and export flow distribution of nitrogen along an urban-rural gradient in a set of catchments studied by the Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES). We test the hypotheses that N export magnitude increases and cumulative N export shifts to higher, less frequent discharge with catchment urbanization. We find that increasing development in watersheds is associated with shifts in nitrogen export toward higher discharge, while total magnitude of export does not show as strong a trend. Forested reference, low-density suburban, and agricultural catchments export most of the total nitrogen (TN) and nitrate (NO3-) loads at relatively low flows. More urbanized sites export TN and NO 3- at higher and less frequent flows. The greatest annual loads of nitrogen are from less developed agricultural and low-density residential (suburban/exurban) areas; the latter is the most rapidly growing land use in expanding metropolitan areas. A simple statistical model relating export distribution metrics to impervious surface area is then used to extrapolate parameters of the N export distribution across the Gwynns Falls watershed in Baltimore County. This spatial extrapolation has potential applications as a tool for predictive mapping of variations in export distribution and targeting stream channel restoration efforts at the watershed scale.

Abstract

Multiple systems have long been used to probe the origin and evolution of stars of all masses. Only in the past 10-15 years have such studies been extended to brown dwarfs and the lowest mass stars through binary surveys of both young star forming regions and the older field population. In addition, a groundswell of interest in M dwarfs in recent years has resulted in large, modern datasets for these most common stars in the Galaxy, thereby enabling renewed perspectives on their multiplicity properties. These latest observational results have in turn fueled the many theories competing to explain the formation of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. This Cool Stars 17 splinter session examined the current state of this field by reviewing results from the numerous observational techniques - radial velocities, astrometry, direct imaging, and synoptic surveys - that have been used to study multiplicity from the earliest embedded protostars to objects in young star forming regions, old and intermediate-age clusters, as well as the more heterogeneous field population., AuthorCount:15

Abstract

A high proportion of leg ulcers refractory to ambulatory compression therapy have a mixed etiology. This study evaluates this mixed etiology and the healing and recurrence rate in octo- and nonagenarians.The study group comprised 101 patients with 119 legs affected by ulcers. Concomitant diseases, ulcer size, healing time and time for the ulcer to recur were documented.Sixty-four ulcers were of venous origin [healing rate (HR): 45.3%, recurrence rate [(RR): 10.3%], 23 ulcers were complicated by 1 additional disease process (HR: 47.8%, RR: 45.5%), 13 ulcers were complicated by 2 or more concomitant diseases (HR: 46.2%, RR: 16.6%) and 19 ulcers (HR: 26.3%, RR: 20%) were of non-venous origin.This study showed that venous reflux in combination with local or systemic disease in our elderly patient group increases the chance of recurrence. Non-venous ulcers appear to have a reduced healing rate possibly due to the underlying pathology.

Abstract

We have created a new autonomous laser-guide-star adaptive-optics (AO) instrument on the 60-inch (1.5-m) telescope at Palomar Observatory called Robo-AO. The instrument enables diffraction-limited resolution observing in the visible and near-infrared with the ability to observe well over one-hundred targets per night due to its fully robotic operation. Robo-AO is being used for AO surveys of targets numbering in the thousands, rapid AO imaging of transient events and long-term AO monitoring not feasible on large diameter telescope systems. We have taken advantage of cost-effective advances in deformable mirror and laser technology while engineering Robo-AO with the intention of cloning the system for other few-meter class telescopes around the world.

Abstract

This paper presents the findings of a study that investigated how participants collaboratively solved a scientific inquiry problem in a virtual environment. 12 participants worked in pairs to complete either a structured or unstructured problem. The study used a modified version of the Decision Function Coding System to identify decision making processes. The results of the study indicate that those in the structured group showed a more direct route to convergence on a goal.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study aimed at gaining an understanding of the process that groups use to solve scientific inquiry problems in a scenario-based multi-user virtual environment. In this study' 12 university students worked in pairs to complete either a structured or unstructured problem in a virtual environment. The pairs were recorded using screen-capture software. The data was coded using a modified decision function coding scheme. The results of the study indicate that participants in the unstructured activity were less likely to arrive at an outcome. Moreover' participants spent more time implementing navigation goals than implementing inquiry-based goals. Overall' the results indicate that scaffolding that supports orientation processes should be incorporated into collaborative problem solving activities in a virtual environment.

Abstract

This paper describes our methodological experiences capturing and analyzing student learning processes and patterns in three cases. Agent-based models and a virtual world were used for learning. Several specific features tie these cases together and distinguish our analysis from other studies in the CSCL domain. First, students interacted in real-time for relatively short periods. Second, they interacted with each other and with interactive software tools that dynamically 'shaped,' and were shaped by, their learning process. Our work builds upon and integrates process analytic approaches of dynamically captured video and computer screen activity and automatic e-learning process analysis techniques. The first two cases identify areas in which analysis 'by hand' of small amounts of data has produced findings of initial interest. The third case discusses the use of an automatic pattern discovery technique based on Hidden Markov Models to begin to apply these methods to larger data sets in CSCL environments.

Abstract

Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT) is currently building a new kind of general-purpose astronomical facility: a fully robotic network of telescopes of 2m, 1m and 0.4m apertures and homogeneous instrumentation. A pan-network approach to scheduling (rather than per individual telescope) offers redundancy in the event of poor weather or technical failure, as well as the ability to observe a target around the clock. Here we describe the network design and instrumentation under development, together with the main science programmes already being lead by LCOGT staff.

173. Two wide planetary-mass companions to solar-type stars in upper scorpius

Abstract

parameter space not obviously linked to binary star formation or solar system scale planet formation. These companions provide insight into the extreme case of companion formation (either binary or planetary), and due to their relative ease of observation when compared to close companions, they offer a useful template for our expectations of more typical planets. We present the results from an adaptive optics imaging survey for wide (∼50-500 AU) companions to solar-type stars in Upper Scorpius. We report one new discovery of a ∼14 MJ companion around GSC 06214-00210and confirm that the candidate planetary-mass companion 1RXS J160929.1-210524 detected by Lafrenière et al. is in fact comoving with its primary star. In our survey, these two detections correspond to ∼4% of solar-type stars having companions in the 6-20 MJ mass and ∼200-500 AU separation range. This figure is higher than would be expected if brown dwarfs and planetary-mass companions were drawn from an extrapolation of the binary mass function. Finally, we discuss implications for the formation of these objects.

Abstract

Variable x-ray and g-ray emission is characteristic of the most extreme physical processes inthe universe. We present multiwavelength observations of a unique g-ray–selected transientdetected by the Swift satellite, accompanied by bright emission across the electromagneticspectrum, and whose properties are unlike any previously observed source. We pinpoint theevent to the center of a small, star-forming galaxy at redshift z = 0.3534. Its high-energyemission has lasted much longer than any g-ray burst, whereas its peak luminosity was~100 times higher than bright active galactic nuclei. The association of the outburst with thecenter of its host galaxy suggests that this phenomenon has its origin in a rare mechanisminvolving the massive black hole in the nucleus of that galaxy.

The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) is a new fully-automated, wide-field survey conducting a systematic exploration of the optical transient sky. The transient survey is performed using a new 8.1 square degree, 101 megapixel camera installed on the 48-inch Samuel Oschin Telescope at Palomar Observatory. The PTF Camera achieved first light at the end of 2008, completed commissioning in July 2009, and is now in routine science operations. The camera is based on the CFH12K camera, and was extensively modified for use on the 48-inch telescope. A field-flattening curved window was installed, the cooling system was re-engineered and upgraded to closed-cycle, custom shutter and filter exchanger mechanisms were added, new custom control software was written, and many other modifications were made. We here describe the performance of these new systems during the first year of Palomar Transient Factory operations, including a detailed and long term on-sky performance characterization. We also describe lessons learned during the construction and commissioning of the upgraded camera, the photometric and astrometric precision currently achieved with the PTF camera, and briefly summarize the first supernova results from the PTF survey.

Abstract

This paper presents the first results from a new citizen science project: Galaxy Zoo Supernovae. This proof of concept project uses members of the public to identify supernova candidates from the latest generation of wide-field imaging transient surveys. We describe the Galaxy Zoo Supernovae operations and scoring model, and demonstrate the effectiveness of this novel method using imaging data and transients from the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). We examine the results collected over the period April-July 2010, during which nearly 14,000 supernova candidates from PTF were classified by more than 2,500 individuals within a few hours of data collection. We compare the transients selected by the citizen scientists to those identified by experienced PTF scanners, and find the agreement to be remarkable - Galaxy Zoo Supernovae performs comparably to the PTF scanners, and identified as transients 93% of the ~130 spectroscopically confirmed SNe that PTF located during the trial period (with no false positive identifications). Further analysis shows that only a small fraction of the lowest signal-to-noise SN detections (r > 19.5) are given low scores: Galaxy Zoo Supernovae correctly identifies all SNe with > 8{\sigma} detections in the PTF imaging data. Abstract

Type-IIn supernovae (SNe), which are characterized by strong interaction of their ejecta with the surrounding circumstellar matter (CSM), provide a unique opportunity to study the mass-loss history of massive stars shortly before their explosive death. We present the discovery and follow-up observations of a Type IIn SN, PTF 09uj, detected by the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). Serendipitous observations by GALEX at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths detected the rise of the SN light curve prior to the PTF discovery. The UV light curve of the SN rose fast, with a time scale of a few days, to a UV absolute AB magnitude of about -19.5. Modeling our observations, we suggest that the fast rise of the UV light curve is due to the breakout of the SN shock through the dense CSM (n~10^10 cm^-3). Furthermore, we find that prior to the explosion the progenitor went through a phase of high mass-loss rate (~0.1 solar mass per year) that lasted for a few years. Abstract

Supernovae (SNe) are stellar explosions driven by gravitational or thermonuclear energy, observed as electromagnetic radiation emitted over weeks or more. In all known SNe, this radiation comes from internal energy deposited in the outflowing ejecta by either radioactive decay of freshly-synthesized elements (typically 56Ni), stored heat deposited by the explosion shock in the envelope of a supergiant star, or interaction between the SN debris and slowly-moving, hydrogen-rich circumstellar material. Here we report on a new class of luminous SNe whose observed properties cannot be explained by any of these known processes. These include four new SNe we have discovered, and two previously unexplained events (SN 2005ap; SCP 06F6) that we can now identify as members. These SNe are all ~10 times brighter than SNe Ia, do not show any trace of hydrogen, emit significant ultra-violet (UV) flux for extended periods of time, and have late-time decay rates which are inconsistent with radioactivity. Our data require that the observed radiation is emitted by hydrogen-free material distributed over a large radius (~10^15 cm) and expanding at high velocities (>10^4 km s^-1). These long-lived, UV-luminous events can be observed out to redshifts z>4 and offer an excellent opportunity to study star formation in, and the interstellar medium of, primitive distant galaxies., Comment: Accepted to Nature. Abstract

We describe the results from a new instrument which combines Lucky Imaging and adaptive optics (AO) to give the first routine direct diffraction-limited imaging in the visible on a 5 m telescope. With fast image selection and alignment behind the PalomarAOsystem we obtained Strehl ratios of 5%-20% at 700 nm in a typical range of seeing conditions, with a median Strehl of approximately 12% when 10% of the input frames are selected. At wavelengths around 700 nm the system gave diffraction-limited 35 mas full width at half-maxima (FWHMs). At 950 nm the output Strehl ratio was as high as 36% and at 500 nm the FWHMresolution was as small as 42mas, with a low Strehl ratio but with resolution improved by a factor of ∼ 20 compared to the prevailing seeing. To obtain wider fields we also used multiple Lucky Imaging guide stars in a configuration similar to a ground layer AO system. With eight guide stars but very undersampled datawe obtained 300 mas resolution across a 30″×30″ field of viewin the i ′ band.

Abstract

The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) is a fully-automated, wide-field survey aimed at a systematic exploration of the optical transient sky. The transient survey is performed using a new 8.1 square degree camera installed on the 48-inch Samuel Oschin telescope at Palomar Observatory; colors and light curves for detected transients are obtained with the automated Palomar 60-inch telescope. PTF uses eighty percent of the 1.2-m and fifty percent of the 1.5-m telescope time. With an exposure of 60-s the survey reaches a depth of approximately 21.3 in g' and 20.6 in R (5 sigma, median seeing). Four major experiments are planned for the five-year project: 1) a 5-day cadence supernova search; 2) a rapid transient search with cadences between 90 seconds and 1 day; 3) a search for eclipsing binaries and transiting planets in Orion; and 4) a 3-pi sr deep H-alpha survey. PTF provides automatic, realtime transient classification and follow up, as well as a database including every source detected in each frame. This paper summarizes the PTF project, including several months of on-sky performance tests of the new survey camera, the observing plans and the data reduction strategy. Abstract

We present results from a high angular resolution survey of 77 very low mass (VLM) binary systems with 6.0 ≤ V - K colour ≤ 7.5 and proper motion ≥ 0.15 arcsec yr^(-1). 21 VLM binaries were detected, 13 of them new discoveries. The new binary systems range in separation between 0.18 and 1.3 arcsec. The distance-corrected binary fraction is 13.6(-4)(+6.5) per cent, in agreement with previous results. Nine of the new binary systems have projected separations > 10 au, including a new wide VLM binary with 27 au projected orbital separation. One of the new systems forms two components of a 2300 au separation triple system. We find that the projected separation distribution of the binaries with V - K < 6.5 in this survey appears to be different from that of redder (lower mass) objects, suggesting a possible rapid change in the orbital radius distribution at around the M5 spectral type. The target sample was also selected to investigate X-ray activity among VLM binaries. There is no detectable correlation between excess X-ray emission and the frequency and binary properties of the VLM systems.

Abstract

We have recently demonstrated diffraction-limited resolution imaging in the visible on the 5m Palomar Hale telescope. The new LAMP instrument is a Lucky Imaging backend camera for the Palomar AO system. Typical resolutions of 35-40 mas with Strehls of 10-20% were achieved at 700nm, and at 500nm the FWHM resolution was as small as 42 milliarcseconds. In this paper we discuss the capabilities and design challenges of such a system used with current and near future AO systems on a variety of telescopes. In particular, we describe the designs of two planned Lucky Imaging + AO instruments: a facility instrument for the Palomar 200" AO system and its PALM3K upgrade, and a visible-light imager for the CAMERA low-cost LGS AO system planned for the Palomar 60" telescope. We introduce a Monte Carlo simulation setup that reproduces the observed PSF variability behind an adaptive optics system, and apply it to predict the performance of 888Cam and CAMERA. CAMERA is predicted to achieve diffraction-limited resolution at wavelengths as short as 350 nm. In addition to on-axis resolution improvements we discuss the results of frame selection with the aim of improving other image parameters such as isoplanatic patch sizes, showing that useful improvements in image quality can be made by Lucky+AO even with very temporally and spatially undersampled data.

Abstract

The past two Decadal Surveys in Astronomy and Astrophysics recommended the completion of a space-based interferometry mission, known today as SIM PlanetQuest, for its unique ability to detect and characterize nearby rocky planets (Bahcall 1991, McKee & Taylor 2001), as well as contributions to a broad range of problems in astrophysics. Numerous committees of the National Research Council as well as NASA Roadmaps have similarly highlighted SIM as the one technology that offers detection and characterization of rocky planets around nearby stars and which is technically ready. To date, SIM remains the only program with the capability of detecting and confirming rocky planets in the habitable zones of nearby solar-type stars. 188. Discovery of Five Very Low Mass Close Binaries, Resolved in the Visible with Lucky Imaging

Abstract

We survey a sample of 32 M5-M8 stars with distance < 40pc for companions with separations between 0.1 arcsec and 1.5 arcsec and with Delta m_i <5. We find five new VLM binaries with separations between 0.15 arcsec and 1.1 arcsec, including a candidate brown dwarf companion. The raw binary fraction is 16% +8/-4% and the distance bias corrected fraction is 7% +7/-3%, for companions within the surveyed range. No systems with contrast ratio Delta m_i>1 were found, even though our survey is sensitive to up to Delta m=5 (well into the brown dwarf regime). The distribution of orbital radii is in broad agreement with previous results, with most systems at 1-5AU, but one detected binary is very wide at 46.8+/-5.0AU. We also serendipitously imaged for the first time a companion to Ross 530, a metal-poor single-lined spectroscopic binary.
