- Abstract
This paper deals with the oxidative drying of films (dry thickness 100 mm) made of an alkyd emulsion based on a high viscosity resin. Half of the soybean fatty acids in this resin were partly conjugated. The oxidation process is studied by monitoring the disappearance of the double bonds both the conjugated and the non-conjugated cis bonds. This was achieved by using by spatially resolved Confocal Raman Microscopy. The principle and some technical limitations of Confocal Raman microscopy are briefly discussed. The effect of various driers is reported. The results show a number of interesting features. Apart from the expected rapid disappearance of double bonds near the surface, the double bonds also disappear fairly rapidly and uniformly in a slab of 60 mm at the substrate side of the film, depending on conditions. It is only slightly visible with manganese drier, pronounced with cobalt drier and very pronounced with a cobalt zirconium combination drier. Additionally, with only cobalt the conversion is also uniform in a surface slab of a thickness of 10-15 mm. The experimental data were complemented by computer simulations of the combined reaction / oxygen diffusion process. A model is presented to explain the disappearance of double bonds in the absence of new supply of oxygen. Unless a cis-cis set of double bonds, a conjugated set of double bonds can become saturated without the consumption of radical activity. On the basis of the used theoretical model, time and length scales of the diffusion reaction mechanism are discussed.

- Abstract
Mechanical failure resulting from subcritical crack growth in the SiN x inorganic barrier layer applied on a flexible multilayer structure was studied by an electro-mechanical two-point bending method. A 10¿nm conducting tin-doped indium oxide layer was sputtered as an electrical probe to monitor the subcritical crack growth in the 150¿nm dielectric SiN x layer carried by a polyethylene naphthalate substrate. In the electro-mechanical two-point bending test, dynamic and static loads were applied to investigate the crack propagation in the barrier layer. As consequence of using two loading modes, the characteristic failure strain and failure time could be determined. The failure probability distribution of strain and lifetime under each loading condition was described by Weibull statistics. In this study, results from the tests in dynamic and static loading modes were linked by a power law description to determine the critical failure over a range of conditions. The fatigue parameter n from the power law reduces greatly from 70 to 31 upon correcting for internal strain. The testing method and analysis tool as described in the paper can be used to understand the limit of thin-film barriers in terms of their mechanical properties.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the annual results in all 13 Dutch in vitro fertilisation (IVF) centres in the period 1996-2000, and to look for possible differences between individual centres and years. DESIGN: Retrospective data collection, description and analysis. METHOD: The results collected on the website of the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Dutch acronym: NVOG; www.nvog.nl) in the period 1996-2000 were integrated and described, with special attention to possible differences between centres and years. RESULTS: In 1996-2000 (5 years), 63,414 IVF or ICSI treatment cycles were started in the Netherlands, and 5,884 transfers of cryopreserved embryos were performed. The number of treatment cycles increased over the years, particularly the number of ICSI cycles. The total number of ongoing pregnancies was 12,991 (20.5% per started cycle; 22.5% for ICSI and 18.3% for IVF). Particularly during the first 3 years, there was an increase in these percentages (IVF: from 16.4% (1996) to 19.2% (1998); ICSI: from 18.3% (1996) to 23.9% (1998)). There were differences between the centres in both the percentage of ongoing pregnancies per started IVF/ICSI cycle (range 13.7-25.1%) and the percentage ICSI (14-61%) and cryo-transfers per total number of treatment cycles (0-26%). It was estimated that, during this 5-year period, 1 out of every 61 Dutch neonates resulted from IVF or ICSI. CONCLUSION: The pregnancy-rates after IVF and ICSI increased during the study period, and were comparable with the rates in other European countries. Some important data are still missing from the inventory, for example regarding the number of embryos per transfer, multiple pregnancies, live births, congenital malformations and complications

- Abstract
With a newly designed uni-axial elongation equiment, elongation thickening of highly concentrated suspensions was investigated. The equipment can measure the total tensile force and the liquid-phase pressure in the suspension. This allows to analyse all network stresses, i.e. all inter-particle stresses. Fro comparing elongation and shear properties, a rotational shear rehometer was equipped with facilities to simultaneously measure viscosity, liquid-phase pressure and normal force. The critical elongation rate beyond which dilatancy occurs is about a factor 30 lower than the corresponding shear equivalent. Especially in elongation and also in shear, the liquid phase pressure of the suspension decreases beyond a critical range.

- Abstract
A Stokesian dynamics computer simulation based method is presented for the estimation of the bed porosity of slurry-packed capillary liquid chromatography (LC) columns. A colloidally well-described reversed-phase stationary phase–slurry liquid suspension was used as a model system. The applied simulation method takes into account the velocity of the slurry and colloidal interaction forces, as well as inter-particle hydrodynamic interactions. The predicted bed porosities suggest that a lower slurry velocity leads to a denser packing structure due to the increased effect of colloidal repulsion effects. The results of the simulations were compared with the external porosity and chromatographic performance of capillary LC columns that were packed at different filtration and compaction pressures. However, the trends that were observed in the experimental results suggest that hydrodynamic packing parameters have no or little effect on the chromatographic performance of capillary LC columns. Within the experimental parameter window, the chromatographic performance and the column porosity were not influenced by the filtration and compaction pressure, nor by the duration of the compaction process.

- Abstract
The HIDiC is a concept of distillation to increase the energy efficiency. The HIDiC combines the advantages of the heat pump assisted column with the diabatic column. The rectification section and stripping section are separated and the rectification section is placed inside the stripping section. By compressing the flow from the stripping section to the rectification section, heat exchange between the two sections is possible. The goal of this study is to determine and validate process parameters with experimental data of the HIDiC pilot plant with and without equipped heat panels to increase the total heat transfer area and therefore heat transfer. Outcome of the study is that the installation heat panels does increase heat transfer but decreases the heat transfer coefficient. Several explanations and suggestion are given to improve this heat transfer coefficient. The model of efficiency works well, the pressure drop model over predicts the pressure drop in the outer column but works well for the inner column. The heat transfer coefficient model over predicts the heat transfer coefficient., Intensified Reaction & Separation Systems, Process and Energy, Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering

- Abstract
A wavelength converting element (104), typically for a LED (101), is provided, comprising luminescent particles (105) dispersed in materix (106) comprising crosslinked polysiloxane. Crosslinked polysiloxane are termperature stable, typically up to temperatures above 300 °C, meaning that they are stable under normal operating conditions of light emitting diodes. Further, crosslinked polysiloxanes are stable towards exposure to light, meaning that they will not degrade/discolor as a consequence of high intensity light exposure. The polymeric wavelength converter can easily be shaped in different forms. This may lead to better outcoupling of the light from a LED-converter system.

Study Question: Do ovarian reserve tests (ORTs) predict age at natural menopause (ANM) in a cohort of healthy women with a regular menstrual cycle?Summary Answer: Of the ORTs researched, anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) alone predicts age at menopause. However, its predictive value decreased with increasing age of the woman, prediction intervals were broad and extreme ages at menopause could not be predicted. What Is Known Already: A fixed interval is hypothesized to exist between ANM and age at loss of natural fertility. Therefore, if it is possible to predict ANM, one could identify women destined for early menopause and thus at higher risk for age-related subfertility. Of ORTs researched in the prediction of ANM, AMH is the most promising one.Study Design, Study Size and Duration: A long-term, extended follow-up study was conducted, results of the first follow-up round were previously published. Two hundred and sixty-five normo-ovulatory women (21-46 years) were included between 1992 and 2001, 49 women (18.5%) could not be reached in the current follow-up round.Participants, Setting, Methods: Two hundred and sixty-five healthy normo-ovulatory women were included, recruited in an Academic hospital. We measured baseline AMH, follicle-stimulating hormone and the antral follicle count (AFC). At follow-up (2009 and 2013), menopausal status was determined via questionnaires. Cox regression analysis calculated time to menopause (TTM) using age and ORT. A check of (non-) proportionality of the predictive effect of AMH was performed. A Weibull survival model was used in order to predict individual ANM.Main Results and the Role Of Chance: In total, 155 women were available for analyses. Eighty-one women (37.5%) had become post-menopausal during follow-up. Univariable Cox regression analysis demonstrated age and ORTs to be significantly correlated with TTM. Multivariable Cox regression analysis, adjusting for baseline age and smoking; however, demonstrated AMH alone to be an independent predictor of TTM (Hazard Ratio 0.70, 95% Confidence Interval 0.56-0.86, P-value <0.001). A (non-)proportionality analysis of AMH over time demonstrated AMH's predictive effect to decline over time.Limitations, Reason For Caution: The observed predictive effect of AMH became less strong with increasing age of the woman. Individual AMH-based age at menopause predictions did not cover the full range of menopausal ages, but did reduce the variation around the predicted ANM from 20 to 10.1 years.Wider Implications Of the Findings: Age-specific AMH levels are predictive for ANM. Unlike in our previous publication however, a declining AMH effect with increasing age was observed. This declining AMH effect is in line with recent long-term follow-up data published by others. Moreover, the accompanying predictive inaccuracy observed in individual age at menopause predictions based on AMH, makes this marker currently unsuitable for use in clinical practice.Study Funding/competing Interests: No external funds were used for this study. - Abstract
This prospective, randomized trial in normo-ovulatory women was designed to test whether administration of low-dose exogenous FSH initiated during the early, mid to late follicular phase can induce multiple dominant follicle development. Forty normal weight women (age 19-35 years, cycle length 25-32 days) participated. A fixed dose (75 IU/day) of recombinant FSH was started on either cycle day 3 (n = 13), 5 (n = 13) or 7 (n = 14) until the induction of ovulation with human chorionic gonadotrophin. Frequent transvaginal ultrasound scans and blood sampling were performed. Multifollicular growth occurred in all groups (overall in 60%), although day 7 starters showed less multifollicular growth. Age, cycle length and initial FSH and inhibin B concentrations were similar between subjects with single or multiple follicle development. However, for all women the lower the body mass index (BMI), the more follicles emerged (r = -0.44, P = 0.007). If multifollicular growth occurred, the length of the luteal phase was reduced (P = 0.002) and midluteal serum concentrations of LH (P = 0.03) and FSH (P = 0.004) were decreased and oestradiol (P = 0.002) and inhibin A (P = 0.01) were increased. In conclusion, interference with decremental serum FSH concentrations by administration of low dose FSH starting on cycle day 3, 5 or as late as day 7, is capable of disrupting single dominant follicle selection. The role of BMI in determining ovarian response suggests that differences in pharmacokinetics of exogenous FSH are involved. Multifollicular growth per se has a distinct effect on luteal phase characteristics. These observations may be relevant for the design of mild ovarian stimulation protocols. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SEMICONDUCTOR defects ,SILICON spectra ,ANNEALING of semiconductors ,SEMICONDUCTOR doping ,SPREADING electric resistance ,ELECTRICAL resistivity - Abstract
The defect complexes that are formed when protons with energies in the MeV-range were implanted into high-purity silicon were investigated. After implantation, the samples were annealed at 400 °C or 450 °C for times ranging between 15 minutes and 30 hours. The resistivity of the samples was then analyzed by Spreading Resistance Profiling (SRP). The resistivity shows minima where there is a high carrier concentration and it is possible to extract the carrier concentration from the resistivity data. Initially, there is a large peak in the carrier concentration at the implantation depth where most of the hydrogen is concentrated. For longer anneals, this peak widens as the hydrogen diffuses away from the implantation depth. Following the changes in resistivity as a function of annealing time allows us to characterize the diffusion of hydrogen through these samples. Differences in the diffusion were observed depending on whether the silicon was grown by the magnetic Czochralski (m:Cz) method or the Float zone (Fz) method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The dynamics of the curing process of alkyd coatings is an important aspect for coating performance. The formation of cross links in an alkyd coating film has been followed in time using a microimaging nuclear magnetic resonance setup, having a spatial resolution of 5 µm perpendicular to the film. During this cross-linking process a front has been observed inside the coating film. The position of this front varied with the square root of time. With the help of a simple reaction model, we have proven that this dynamics results from the fact that the curing rate is limited by the oxygen flux into the coating. This model can also explain, the differences in curing rates observed for various coatings. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.
