Abstract

El estilo de vida fitness se realiza en, y a través de, un entramado subjetivo y de poder en el que circulan y se ensamblan dispositivos empresariales, terapeúticos, sanitarios y de espectacularización de los cuerpos, tendientes a inscribir la vida de la población en las tramas conflictivas de un capitalismo heterosexista, neoliberal e informacional. En dicho marco, la temporalidad, metarmofosis y plasticidad del cuerpo materno irrumpe como problema y objeto de intervención de tecnologías diversas orientadas a ajustar su tamaño, forma y devenir a los parámetros de la vida activa y saludable. En escenarios digitales, dicha tensión se materializa, por un lado, a través de dispositivos visuales y discursivos que promocionan el ideal del fitness, encarnado de forma hiperbólica en la figura de la fitmom. Y por el otro, a través de las prácticas de exhibición corporal y “aceptación de sí” de madres que cuestionan las figuraciones maternas que se inscriben de modo hegemónico en el orden de lo “deseable”. El artículo indaga en las imágenes y narrativas que se ponen en juego entre ambos posicionamientos, centrándose particularmente en las diferencias entre un cuerpo que se presenta como una adaptación ficcional al orden de lo “deseable” y otro que procura visibilizar la vulnerabilidad constitutiva del proceso materno. El análisis muestra cómo la gestión y exhibición del cuerpo materno en la red se encuentra jalonado tanto por los imperativos de salud, productividad y rendimiento, como por los de autenticidad y extimidad.

Abstract

La investigación se orientó a caracterizar la autoeficacia docente en profesores del Departamento de Contabilidad y Finanzas de la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales de la Universidad de Oriente, Cuba. El estudio se fundamentó en el enfoque cualitativo con un diseño fenomenológico. Las técnicas empleadas fueron la entrevista semiestructurada, el análisis documental, la composición y la entrevista en profundidad y se empleó un muestreo intencional en la modalidad de muestreo diverso. El proceso constructivo - interpretativo de los datos se realizó mediante la triangulación y el análisis de contenido. Se obtuvo que los juicios de autoeficacia docente de los profesores de Contabilidad y Finanzas están sustentados en el autoconocimiento de sus potencialidades e insuficiencias para el desempeño; así como en el dominio de las características de las diferentes funciones que se consideran para el desempeño profesional en la Universidad de Oriente.

184. Numerical studies of long-term wettability alteration effects in CO$_2$ storage applications

Abstract

The wettability of the rock surface in porous media has an effect on the constitutive saturation functions that govern capillary pressure and relative permeability. The term wettability alteration refers to the change of this property over time by processes such as CO$_2$ interactions with the rock. In this work, we perform numerical simulations considering a two-phase two-component flow model including time-dependent wettability alteration in a two-dimensional aquifer-caprock system using the open porous media framework. Particularly, we study the spatial distribution over time of injected CO$_2$ into the aquifer neglecting and including wettability alteration effects. The numerical simulations show that wettability alteration on the caprock results in a loss of containment; however, the CO$_2$ front into the caprock advances very slow since the unexposed caprock along the vertical migration path also needs to be changed by the slow wettability alteration process. The simulations also show that wettability alteration on the aquifer results in an enhancement of storage efficiency; this since the CO$_2$ front migrates more slowly and the capillary entry pressure decreases after wettability alteration., Comment: 2nd Geoscience & Engineering in Energy Transition Conference (2021)

Abstract

In this paper we take into account both social and linguistic aspects to perform demographic analysis by processing a large amount of tweets in Basque language. The study of demographic characteristics and social relationships are approached by applying machine learning and modern deep-learning Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, combining social sciences with automatic text processing. More specifically, our main objective is to combine demographic inference and social analysis in order to detect young Basque Twitter users and to identify the communities that arise from their relationships or shared content. This social and demographic analysis will be entirely based on the~automatically collected tweets using NLP to convert unstructured textual information into interpretable knowledge.

186. Prioritizing Choice and Assent in the Assessment and Treatment of Food Selectivity

Abstract

Food selectivity affects up to 72% and 45% of individuals with and without disabilities, respectively, and there is a need for interventions that rely on positive, unrestrictive strategies. We evaluated an assessment and treatment package for food selectivity for young children with developmental disabilities that prioritized caregiver collaboration, client autonomy, and did not rely on restrictive procedures (e.g. escape extinction). The process involved: (a) collaborating with caregivers on the selection of foods and design of the children's functional analyses; (b) indirectly and directly measuring food preferences prior to treatment; (c) evaluating the sensitivity of mealtime problem behavior to environmental variables through an interview-informed synthesized contingency analysis (IISCA); and (c) incorporating the assessment results into a progressive treatment process consisting of choice-making opportunities and differential reinforcement of successive approximations to consumption. Children also had the ability to opt in and out of treatment sessions. The treatment was effective in increasing consumption of nonpreferred foods and successfully extended to caregivers. Practical implications and directions for future research are discussed.

187. What Is Known about Schools' Transfer of Rights Practices for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Abstract

We performed a scoping review of literature on schools' transfer of rights practices under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) with respect to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The review found only limited empirical evidence of how IDEA transfer of rights policies are implemented in schools and affect students and parents. We found a substantial disconnect between this limited empirical evidence and generalizations about school practice made in recent literature that is not empirically based. In addition, we found some misunderstanding of relevant federal policy and little attention to variation in states' policies and schools' practices. Further research is needed to understand the intersection of relevant public policy, school practice, and student postsecondary education, employment, and independent living outcomes.

188. Pathways between Self-Concept and Academic Stress: The Role of Emotional Intelligence and Personality among University Students

Abstract

Emotional intelligence, self-concept, academic stress and personality have been associated with university students' academic performance. The aim of this paper was to study the relationship between self-concept and academic stress in Education students from different Universities in the region of Andalusia (Spain), analysing the mediational role of Emotional Intelligence and personality factors in this relationship. To this end, 1,022 Education students completed the following tests: A self-concept test (AF-5), an Emotional Intelligence test (WLEIS), a personality test (Big-Five 44), and an academic stress test (SISCO). The proposed model, which has good fit rates, shows that the individual's self-concept predicts some of the variance of academic stress by a full mediation of Emotional Intelligence and the personality factor called neuroticism. The practical implications of the study are discussed and explained.

189. Phonological and Semantic Verbal Fluency Test: Scoring Criteria and Normative Data for Clustering and Switching Strategies for Colombian Children and Adolescents

Abstract

Background: Verbal fluency tests (VFT) are highly sensitive to cognitive deficits. Usually, the score on VFT is based on the number of correct words produced, yet it alone gives little information regarding underlying test performance. The implementation of different strategies (cluster and switching) to perform efficiently during the tasks provide more valuable information. However, normative data for clustering and switching strategies are scarce. Moreover, scoring criteria adapted to Colombian Spanish are missing. Aims: (1) To describe the Colombian adaptation of the scoring system guidelines for clustering and switching strategies in VFT; (2) to determine its reliability; and (3) to provide normative data for Colombian children and adolescents aged 6-17 years. Methods & Procedures: A total of 691 children and adolescents from Colombia completed phonological (/f/, /a/, /s/, /m/, /r/ and /p/) and semantic (animals and fruits) VFT, and five scores were calculated: total score (TS), number of clusters (NC), cluster size (CS), mean cluster size (MCS) and number of switches (NS). The intraclass correlation coefficient was used for interrater reliability. Hierarchical multiple regressions were conducted to investigate which strategies were associated with VFT TS. Multiple regressions were conducted for each strategy, including as predictors age, age[superscript 2], sex, mean parents' education (MPE), MPE2 and type of school, to generate normative data. Outcomes & Results: Reliability indexes were excellent. Age was associated with VFT TS, but weakly compared with strategies. For both VFT TS, NS was the strongest variable, followed by CS and NC. Regarding norms, age was the strongest predictor for all measures, while age[superscript 2] was relevant for NC (/f/ phoneme) and NS (/m/ phoneme). Participants with higher MPE obtained more NC, and NS, and larger CS in several phonemes and categories. Children and adolescents from private school generated more NC, NS and larger CS in /s/ phoneme. Conclusions & Implications: This study provides new scoring guidelines and normative data for clustering and switching strategies for Colombian children and adolescents between 6 and 17 years old. Clinical neuropsychologists should include these measures as part of their everyday practice.

Abstract

Though there have been multiple studies on engagement among Latinx families, less is known about Latinx parental engagement at the secondary level or about engagement at predominantly Latinx schools. The purpose of this case study was to use Yosso's concept of community cultural wealth to demonstrate how administrators can engage Latinx parents in an urban high school by being responsive to families' needs and the ways in which parents want to engage with the school. Our findings have implications for research on parent engagement and for school-based practitioners seeking to engage their communities.

191. Speech-Language Pathologists' Perceptions of Language and Literacy Instruction for Pre-K Children With Developmental Language Disorder

Abstract

Purpose: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have multiple roles and responsibilities related to language and literacy instruction in schools. The purpose of this exploratory, qualitative study was to analyze school-based SLPs' perceptions related to effective language and early literacy instruction for pre-K children with developmental language disorder (DLD). The goal of this study was to inform development of a new language and early literacy professional development program for inclusive pre-K teachers. Method: Eight school-based SLPs participated in a 1-hr virtual focus group conducted via Zoom recording technology. The researchers used a conventional content analysis approach to analyze the focus group data and identify themes from the discussion. Results: The researchers developed two themes: (1) SLPs identified repeated exposure to books, peer interaction, and teaching vocabulary with visual supports and props as key elements of language and literacy instruction that can be integrated into a variety of contexts; and (2) SLPs want more time with parents and teachers to support their book reading and model specific language strategies. Conclusions: SLPs identified several instructional practices inclusive pre-K teachers could be taught to use during professional development programs to support the emergent literacy development of children with DLD. They also discussed the need for ongoing collaboration between SLPs, caregivers, and teachers to maximize children's early language and literacy experiences. Future research should explore the impact of partnerships with caregivers and teachers on children's language and literacy outcomes.

Abstract

This thesis investigates the role of healthcare outcomes as a system to be applied in the (re)design of healthcare systems, notably in the context of long-term conditions. A participatory mapping outcomebased approach that facilitates a space for multiple stakeholder negotiation has been developed to explore this phenomena following the four stages of the Design Research Methodology (DRM). Despite the growing recognition that outcomes in healthcare systems-level interventions rarely perform in an expected way and emerge from multiple and interrelated elements, there is little support concerning the understanding of multiple outcomes interrelations and their practical application in the systems (re)design process. Moreover, perspectives from multiple stakeholders are required to build a holistic understanding of healthcare outcomes. However, working with such heterogeneous groups bring extra challenges due to the multiple and frequently conflicting views about outcomes, values and purposes. Given this situation, facilitating the understanding of outcomes 'as a system' whilst they are negotiated in an equitable space in necessary. In the first stage of DRM, the outcome-based approach was conceptually defined and initially applied with the design and human factors community. The approach was then refined in the second and third stages through one-to-one and participatory mapping sessions with people living with long-term conditions, senior managers and commissioners. The last stage concludes with a preliminary evaluation with design academics and practitioners. The research resulted in an outcome-based approach that i) proposes a reconceptualisation of healthcare outcomes and ii) offers a practical dialogical mapping method to understand and negotiate outcomes with multiple stakeholders. Firstly, the reconceptualisation acknowledges that outcomes are value-dependent, continuous adaptable and may not respond to the short/long term structure. The bespoke network analysis accompanying the approach reveals tacit knowledge about outcomes 'as a system' that guides the identification of critical outcomes that can create propagation or become brokers. Furthermore, it identifies implications of considering wellbeing as the system's purpose, which may require positive feedback and allow interaction with the system without exacerbation. Finally, the clarified role of values enriches participation (complexity sampling) and agrees upon high-level commitments. Secondly, the mapping method discards imposing a visual structure and instead combines an open mapping strategy with outcome representations. This method encourages stakeholders to freely make sense of their priorities and negotiate their conflicts, trade-offs and enduring needs whilst balancing the power dynamics of participation. This research has contributed to offering a new perspective on the role of outcomes for the (re)design of healthcare systems and providing practical applications that can encourage their integration.

Abstract

NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is collecting spaceborne full waveform lidar data with a primary science goal of producing accurate estimates of forest aboveground biomass density (AGBD). This paper presents the development of the models used to create GEDI's footprint-level (~25 m) AGBD (GEDI04_A) product, including a description of the datasets used and the procedure for final model selection. The data used to fit our models are from a compilation of globally distributed spatially and temporally coincident field and airborne lidar datasets, whereby we simulated GEDI-like waveforms from airborne lidar to build a calibration database. We used this database to expand the geographic extent of past waveform lidar studies, and divided the globe into four broad strata by Plant Functional Type (PFT) and six geographic regions. GEDI's waveform-to-biomass models take the form of parametric Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) models with simulated Relative Height (RH) metrics as predictor variables. From an exhaustive set of candidate models, we selected the best input predictor variables, and data transformations for each geographic stratum in the GEDI domain to produce a set of comprehensive predictive footprint-level models. We found that model selection frequently favored combinations of RH metrics at the 98th, 90th, 50th, and 10th height above ground-level percentiles (RH98, RH90, RH50, and RH10, respectively), but that inclusion of lower RH metrics (e.g. RH10) did not markedly improve model performance. Second, forced inclusion of RH98 in all models was important and did not degrade model performance, and the best performing models were parsimonious, typically having only 1-3 predictors. Third, stratification by geographic domain (PFT, geographic region) improved model performance in comparison to global models without stratification. Fourth, for the vast majority of strata, the best performing models were fit using square root transformation of field AGBD and/or height metrics. There was considerable variability in model performance across geographic strata, and areas with sparse training data and/or high AGBD values had the poorest performance. These models are used to produce global predictions of AGBD, but will be improved in the future as more and better training data become available.

199. Experimental Bayesian estimation of quantum state preparation, measurement, and gate errors in multi-qubit devices

Abstract

We introduce a Bayesian method for the estimation of single qubit errors in quantum devices, and use it to characterize these errors on three 27-qubit superconducting qubit devices. We self-consistently estimate up to seven parameters of each qubit's state preparation, readout, and gate errors, analyze the stability of these errors as a function of time, and demonstrate easily implemented approaches for mitigating different errors before a quantum computation experiment. On the investigated devices we find non-negligible qubit reset errors that cannot be parametrized as a diagonal mixed state, but manifest as a coherent phase of a superposition with a small contribution from the qubit's excited state. We are able to mitigate such errors by applying pre-rotations on the initialized qubits, which we demonstrate with multi-qubit entangled states. Our results demonstrate that Bayesian estimation can resolve small parameters - including those pertaining to quantum gate errors - with a high relative accuracy, at a lower measurement cost as compared with standard characterization approaches., Comment: v3 contains small corrections and clarifications

Abstract

Constitutive functions that govern macroscale capillary pressure and relative permeability are central in constraining both storage efficiency and sealing properties of CO$_2$ storage systems. Constitutive functions for porous systems are in part determined by wettability, which is a pore-scale phenomenon that influences macroscale displacement. While wettability of saline aquifers and caprocks are assumed to remain water-wet when CO$_2$ is injected, there is recent evidence of contact angle change due to long-term CO$_2$ exposure. Weakening of capillary forces alters the saturation functions dynamically over time. Recently, new dynamic models were developed for saturation functions that capture the impact of wettability alteration (WA) due to long-term CO$_2$ exposure. In this paper, these functions are implemented into a two-phase two-component simulator to study long-term WA dynamics for field-scale CO$_2$ storage. We simulate WA effects on horizontal migration patterns under injection and buoyancy-driven migration in the caprock. We characterize the behavior of each scenario for different flow regimes. Our results show the impact on storage efficiency can be described by the capillary number, while vertical leakage can be scaled by caprock sealing parameters. Scaling models for CO$_2$ migration into the caprock show that long-term WA poses little risk to CO$_2$ containment over relevant timescales.
