A systematic review aimed to investigate the association between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), its prevalence and incidence, potential factors associated with its occurrence and its impact on mortality among these patients. We performed the literature search in PubMed, Scopus and PsycInfo from inception to February 2022 and identified 19 studies: ten cross-sectional, 5 that included cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses, and 4 retrospective cohort studies. The reported prevalence of COPD ranged from 2.6% to 52.7% in patients with schizophrenia and between 3.0% and 12.9% in patients with bipolar disorder. Two studies reported an annual incidence of COPD of 2.21 cases/100 person-years in patients with schizophrenia and 2.03 cases/100 person-years in patients with bipolar disorder. Among the risk factors evaluated in three studies, only advanced age was consistently associated with the presence/occurrence of COPD in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder; the role of tobacco consumption was not investigated in those three studies. According to two studies, the likelihood of mortality from COPD showed an over 3-fold increase in patients with schizophrenia and a 2-fold increase in those with bipolar disorder compared to the overall population; COPD was also associated with increased inpatient mortality. Available data indicate that COPD in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is a major public health problem. National and international health organizations should strive to specifically address this issue by creating awareness about this health problem and developing specific programs for screening and early intervention aimed to reduce the burden of COPD in these populations.

Resumen: Introducción y objetivos: El fibroelastoma papilar es un tumor cardiaco primario benigno localizado normalmente en el endocardio valvular, aunque es posible encontrarlo en otras estructuras endocárdicas. Según estudios recientes, podría ser el tumor cardiaco primario benigno más común. En un número importante de casos es asintomático, se diagnostica de manera incidental y, en caso de presentar clínica acompañante, se asocia a eventos cerebrovasculares tromboembólicos. Mostramos nuestra experiencia en el tratamiento quirúrgico del fibroelastoma papilar y se lleva a cabo una revisión bibliográfica de la literatura. Métodos: Estudio retrospectivo unicéntrico mediante le revisión de las historias clínicas de todos los pacientes diagnosticados de fibroelastoma papilar y tratados quirúrgicamente en nuestro Servicio. Resultados: Desde enero de 2016 hasta octubre de 2022 se intervinieron 14 pacientes, predominantemente varones, con una edad media de 61 ± 12,6 años. El diagnóstico se realizó en casi todos los casos mediante estudios previos a la cirugía. La mayoría de los tumores eran asintomáticos y se localizaron en la válvula aórtica. Ninguno precisó reemplazo o reparación valvular. En 5 casos (35,7%) se realizó crioablación concomitante del lecho tumoral. No hubo mortalidad quirúrgica. Tras 3,2 ± 2,22 años de seguimiento dos pacientes fallecieron de causas no cardiacas. No se han objetivado recidivas. Conclusiones: El tratamiento quirúrgico del fibroelastoma papilar es seguro y ofrece buenos resultados. La crioablación concomitante podría ser útil para conseguir una eliminación tumoral completa sin necesidad de recambio valvular, aunque es necesaria más evidencia. La realización de un registro multicéntrico permitiría un mayor conocimiento de esta patología. Abstract: Introduction and objectives: Papillary fibroelastoma is a benign primary cardiac tumor normally located in the valvular endocardium, although it can be found in other endocardial structures. According to recent studies, it could be the most common benign primary cardiac tumor. In a significant number of cases it is asymptomatic, diagnosed incidentally and, in symptomatic cases, usually they present as thromboembolic neurological events. We show our experience in the surgical treatment of papillary fibroelastoma and a review of the literature is performed. Methods: Single-center retrospective study by reviewing the medical records of all patients diagnosed with papillary fibroelastoma and surgically treated in our department. Results: From January 2016 to October 2022, 14 patients were operated on, predominantly men, with a mean age of 61 ± 12.6 years. The diagnosis was made mostly in almost all cases during the preoperative study for other indications. Most of the tumors were asymptomatic and were located in the aortic valve. No patient required valve replacement or repair. In 5 cases (35.7%) concomitant cryoablation was performed. There was no surgical mortality. After 3.2 ± 2.22 years of follow-up, two patients died of non-cardiac causes. No tumoral recurrences have been found. Conclusions: Surgical treatment of papillary fibroelastoma is safe and offers good short and mid-term results. Concomitant cryoablation might be useful to achieve complete tumor removal without the need for valve replacement, however more evidence is mandatory. The realization of a multicenter registry would allow a better knowledge of this tumors.

Recently, vitamin D status has been associated with prostate cancer risk. However, some studies argue that there is no association of vitamin D with prostate cancer risk and serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentrations. No clear conclusions can be drawn from the studies found in the literature. Our aim was to assess the relationship between PSA and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D].

Abstract The pan‐European power grid is experiencing an increasing penetration of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE). The fluctuating and non‐dispatchable nature of VRE hinders them in providing the Ancillary Service (AS) needed for the reliability and stability of the grid. Therefore, Energy Storage Systems (ESS) are needed along the VRE. Among the different ESS, a particularly viable and reliable option is Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS), given its cost‐effective implementation and considerable lifespan, in comparison to other technologies. Traditional PHS plants with Francis turbines operate at a high head difference. However, not all regions have the necessary topology to make these plants cost‐effective and efficient. Therefore, the ALPHEUS project will introduce low‐head PHS for regions with a relatively flat topography. In this paper, a grid‐forming controlled converter coupled with low‐head PHS that can contribute to the grid stability is introduced, emphasising its ability to provide different AS, especially frequency control, through the provision of fast Frequency Containment Reserve (fFCR) as well as synthetic system inertia. This paper is an extended version of the paper “The Contribution of Low‐head Pumped Hydro Storage to a successful Energy Transition”, which was presented at the 19th Wind Integration Workshop 2020.

Abstract Bovine tuberculosis still represents a universal threat that creates a wider range of public and animal health impacts. One of the most important steps in the pathogenesis of this disease and granuloma formation is the phagocytosis of tuberculous bacilli by macrophages. Mycobacteria replicate in macrophages, which are crucial to the pathophysiology of mycobacterial infections; however, scarce information is available about the dynamics of the granuloma-stage immunological response. Therefore, immunohistochemistry was used in this work to evaluate the expression of CD68, iNOS, and HLA-DR in different stages of TB granulomas from naturally infected cattle with tuberculosis. Two thousand, one hundred and fifty slaughtered beef cattle were examined during the period from September 2020 to March 2022. Sixty of them showed gross tuberculous pulmonary lesions and samples were collected from all of them for histopathological examination, Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining, and bacteriological culturing. Selected samples that yielded a positive result for ZN and mycobacterial culturing were subjected to an immunohistochemical study of CD68, iNOS, and HLA-DR expression by macrophages according to granuloma stages. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that the immunolabeling of CD68+, iNOS+, and HLA-DR+ macrophages significantly reduced as the stage of granuloma increased from stage I to stage IV (P

Peptides are receiving significant attention in pharmaceutical sciences due to their applications as anti-inflammatory drugs; however, many aspects of their interactions and mechanisms at the molecular level are not well-known. This work explores the molecular structure of two peptides—(i) cysteine (Cys)–asparagine (Asn)–serine (Ser) (CNS) as a molecule in the gas phase and solvated in water in zwitterion form, and (ii) the crystal structure of the dipeptide serine–asparagine (SN), a reliable peptide indication whose experimental cell parameters are well known. A search was performed by means of atomistic calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). These calculations matched the experimental crystal structure of SN, validating the CNS results and useful for assignments of our experimental spectroscopic IR bands. Our calculations also explore the intercalation of CNS into the interlayer space of montmorillonite (MNT). Our quantum mechanical calculations show that the conformations of these peptides change significantly during intercalation into the confined interlayer space of MNT. This intercalation is energetically favorable, indicating that this process can be a useful preparation for therapeutic anti-inflammatory applications and showing high stability and controlled release processes.

Current therapy in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has improved patient life expectancy close to that of healthy individuals. However, molecular alterations other than BCR::ABL1 fusion gene in CML are barely known. MicroRNAs are important regulators of gene expression, and variants in some of the components of microRNA biosynthesis pathways have been associated with genetic susceptibility to different types of cancer. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the association of variants located in genes involved in the biogenesis of microRNAs with susceptibility to CML. Fifteen variants in eight genes involved in the biogenesis of miRNAs were genotyped in 296 individuals with CML and 485 healthy participants using TaqMan probes. The association of gene variants with CML and clinical variables was evaluated by a Chi-square test, and odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated by logistic regression. The variant rs13078 in DICER1 was significantly higher among CML individuals than in healthy participants. In addition, the variants rs7813 and rs2740349 were significantly associated with worse prognosis, according to their Hasford scores, whereas the rs2740349 variant was also associated with a later age at diagnosis. These findings suggest that variants in components of the microRNA biogenesis pathway could be involved in CML genetic risk.

The Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), with its diverse genotypes and subtypes, has significantly impacted the health of millions of people worldwide. Analyzing the risk factors is essential to understanding the spread of the disease and developing appropriate prevention strategies. This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with HCV subtype transmission and calculate the emergence time of subtype 1a in Mexico. A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2014 to December 2018, involving 260 HCV-infected adults. HCV infection was confirmed via Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay, and viral load was measured by real-time PCR. Genotyping/subtyping tools were the Line Probe Assay and Sanger sequencing of the non-structural region 5B (NS5B). The most frequent HCV subtype was 1a (58.5%), followed by subtypes 1b (19.2%), 3a (13.1%), 2b (5.4%), 2a/2c (2.7%), 2a (0.8%), and 4a (0.4%). Intravenous drug use and tattoos were significant risk factors for subtypes 1a and 3a, while hemodialysis and blood transfusion were linked with subtype 1b. For the evolutionary analysis, 73 high-quality DNA sequences of the HCV subtype 1a NS5B region were used, employing a Bayesian coalescent analysis approach. This analysis suggested that subtype 1a was introduced to Mexico in 1976, followed by a diversification event in the mid-1980s. An exponential increase in cases was observed from 1998 to 2006, stabilizing by 2014. In conclusion, this study found that HCV subtypes follow distinct transmission routes, emphasizing the need for targeted prevention strategies. Additionally, the findings provide valuable insights into the origin of HCV subtype 1a. By analyzing the history, risk factors, and dynamics of the HCV epidemic, we have identified these measures: limiting the harm of intravenous drug trafficking, enhancing medical training and infrastructure, and ensuring universal access to antiviral treatments. The successful implementation of these strategies could lead to an HCV-free future in Mexico.

Boson stars are horizonless compact objects and they could possess novel geodesic orbits under the equilibrium assumption, which differ from those in black hole backgrounds. However, unstable boson stars may collapse into black holes or migrate to stable states, resulting in an inability to maintain the initially bound geodesic orbits within the backgrounds of unstable boson stars. To elucidate the fate of initially bound geodesic orbits in boson stars, we present a study of geodesics within the spherical space times of stable, collapsing, and migrating boson stars. We focus on timelike geodesics that are initially circular or reciprocating. We verify that orbits initially bound within a stable boson star persist in their bound states. For a collapsing boson star, we show that orbits initially bound and reciprocating finally either become unbound or plunge into the newly formed black hole, depending on their initial maximal radii. For initially circular geodesics, we have discovered the existence of a critical radius. Orbits with radii below this critical value are found to plunge into the newly formed black hole, whereas those with radii larger than the critical radius continue to orbit around the vicinity of the newly formed black hole, exhibiting nonzero eccentricities. For the migrating case, a black hole does not form. In this case, the reciprocating orbits span a wider radial range. For initially circular geodesics, orbits with small radii become unbound, and orbits with large radii remain bound with nonvanishing eccentricities. This geodesic study provides an approach to investigating the gravitational collapse and migration of boson stars.

(1) Introduction: Diagnostic ureteroscopy (URS) is an important component in the workup of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). Whether URS was associated with increased recurrence in the bladder was not fully concluded. The current study aimed to evaluate the implication of URS on the incidences of intravesical recurrence following radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) in non-metastatic UTUC patients without prior history of bladder cancer via multi-institutional data. (2) Patients and Methods: Data were obtained from the Clinical Research Office of the Endourology Society Urothelial Carcinomas of the Upper Tract (CROES-UTUC) registry, a prospective, multicentre database. Patients with non-metastatic UTUC treated with RNU were divided into two groups: those undergoing upfront RNU and those having diagnostic URS prior to RNU. Intravesical recurrence-free survival (IVRS) was the primary endpoint, evaluated through Kaplan–Meier analysis and multivariate Cox regression. Cases with adequate follow-up data were included. (3) Results: The analysis included 269 patients. Of these, 137 (50.9%) received upfront RNU and 132 (49.1%) received pre-RNU URS. The URS group exhibited an inferior 24-month IVRS compared to the upfront RNU group (HR = 1.705, 95% CI = 1.082–2.688; p = 0.020). Multivariate analysis confirmed URS as the only significant predictor of IVR (p = 0.019). Ureteric access sheath usage, flexible ureteroscopy, ureteric biopsy, retrograde contrast studies, and the duration of URS did not significantly affect IVRS. (4) Conclusions: Diagnostic URS prior to RNU was found to be associated with an increased risk of IVR in patients with UTUC. The risk was not significantly influenced by auxiliary procedures during URS. Physicians were advised to meticulously evaluate the necessity of diagnostic URS.

Sex differences may play a role in the etiopathogenesis and severity of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a disorder characterized by excessive fat accumulation associated with increased inflammation and oxidative stress. We previously observed the development of steatosis specifically in female rats fed a high-fat diet enriched with liquid fructose (HFHFr) for 12 weeks. The aim of this study was to better characterize the observed sex differences by focusing on the antioxidant and cytoprotective pathways related to the KEAP1/NRF2 axis. The KEAP1/NRF2 signaling pathway, autophagy process (LC3B and LAMP2), and endoplasmic reticulum stress response (XBP1) were analyzed in liver homogenates in male and female rats that were fed a 12-week HFHFr diet. In females, the HFHFr diet resulted in the initial activation of the KEAP1/NRF2 pathway, which was not followed by the modulation of downstream molecular targets; this was possibly due to the increase in KEAP1 levels preventing the nuclear translocation of NRF2 despite its cytosolic increase. Interestingly, while in both sexes the HFHFr diet resulted in an increase in the levels of LC3BII/LC3BI, a marker of autophagosome formation, only males showed a significant upregulation of LAMP2 and XBP1s; this did not occur in females, suggesting impaired autophagic flux in this sex. Overall, our results suggest that males are characterized by a greater ability to cope with an HFHFr metabolic stimulus mainly through an autophagic-mediated proteostatic process while in females, this is impaired. This might depend at least in part upon the fine modulation of the cytoprotective and antioxidant KEAP1/NRF2 pathway resulting in sex differences in the occurrence and severity of MASLD. These results should be considered to design effective therapeutics for MASLD.

Tetroxane derivatives are interesting drugs for antileishmaniasis and antimalaric treatments. The gas-phase thermal decomposition of 3,6,-dimethyl-1,2,4,5-tetroxane (DMT) and 3,3,6,6,-tetramethyl-1,2,4,5-tetroxane (acetone diperoxide (ACDP)) was studied at 493–543 K by direct gas chromatography by means of a flow reactor. The reaction is produced in the injector chamber at different temperatures. The resulting kinetics Arrhenius equations were calculated for both tetroxanes. Including the parent compound of the series 1,2,4,5-tetroxane (formaldehyde diperoxide (FDP)), the activation energy and frequency factors decrease linearly with the number of methyl groups. The reaction mechanisms of ACDP and 3,6,6-trimethyl-1,2,4,5-tetroxane (TMT) decomposition have been studied by means of the DFT method with the BHANDHLYP functional. Our calculations confirm that the concerted mechanism should be discarded and that only the stepwise mechanism occurs. The critical points of the singlet and triplet state potential energy surfaces (S- and T-PES) of the thermolysis reaction of both compounds have been determined. The calculated activation energies of the different steps vary linearly with the number of methyl groups of the methyl-tetroxanes series. The mechanism for the S-PES leads to a diradical O···O open structure, which leads to a C···O dissociation in the second step and the production of the first acetaldehyde/acetone molecule. This last one yields a second C···O dissociation, producing O2 and another acetone/acetaldehyde molecule. The O2 molecule is in the singlet state. A quasi-parallel mechanism for the T-PES from the open diradical to products is also found. Most of the critical points of both PES are linear with the number of methyl groups. Reaction in the triplet state is much more exothermic than the singlet state mechanism. Transitions from the singlet ground state, S0 and low-lying singlet states S1–3, to the low-lying triplet excited states, T1–4, (chemical excitation) in the family of methyl tetroxanes are also studied at the CASSCF/CASPT2 level. Two possible mechanisms are possible here: (i) from S0 to T3 by strong spin orbit coupling (SOC) and subsequent fast internal conversion to the excited T1 state and (ii) from S0 to S2 from internal conversion and subsequent S2 to T1 by SOC. From these experimental and theoretical results, the additivity effect of the methyl groups in the thermolysis reaction of the methyl tetroxane derivatives is clearly highlighted. This information will have a great impact for controlling these processes in the laboratory and chemical industries.

Cervical cancer remains a significant public health issue, particularly in regions with low screening uptake. This study evaluates the effectiveness of self-sampling and the 7-type HPV mRNA E6/E7 test in improving cervical cancer screening outcomes among a referral population in Mexico. A cohort of 418 Mexican women aged 25 to 65, referred for colposcopy and biopsy due to abnormal cytology results (ASC-US+), participated in this study. Self-samples were analyzed using both the 14-type HPV DNA test and the 7-type HPV mRNA E6/E7 test. The study assessed the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and the necessity of colposcopies to detect CIN3+ lesions. Participant acceptability of self-sampling was also evaluated through a questionnaire. The 7-type HPV mRNA E6/E7 test demonstrated equivalent sensitivity but significantly higher specificity (77.0%) and PPV for CIN3+ detection compared to the 14-type HPV DNA test (specificity: 45.8%, p < 0.001). The use of the HPV mRNA test as a triage tool reduced the number of colposcopies needed per CIN3+ case detected from 16.6 to 7.6 (p < 0.001). Self-sampling was highly accepted among participants, with the majority reporting confidence in performing the procedure, minimal discomfort, and willingness to undertake self-sampling at home. Self-sampling combined with the 7-type HPV mRNA E6/E7 testing offers a promising strategy to enhance cervical cancer screening by improving accessibility and ensuring precise diagnostics. Implementing these app roaches could lead to a significant reduction in cervical cancer morbidity and mortality, especially in underserved populations. Future research should focus on the long-term impact of integrating these methods into national screening programs and explore the cost-effectiveness of widespread implementation.

Background/Objectives: Heart failure (HF) is usually accompanied by other comorbidities, which, altogether, have a major impact on patients and healthcare systems. Our aim was to analyse the demographic and clinical characteristics of incident HF patients and the effect of comorbidities on one-year health outcomes. Methods: This was an observational, retrospective, population-based study of incident HF patients between 2014 and 2018 in the EpiChron Cohort, Spain. The included population contained all primary and hospital care patients with a diagnosis of HF. All chronic diseases in their electronic health records were pooled into three comorbidity clusters (cardiovascular, mental, other physical). These comorbidity groups and the health outcomes were analysed until 31 December 2018. A descriptive analysis was performed. Cox regression models and survival curves were calculated to determine the hazard risk (HR) of all-cause mortality, all-cause and HF-related hospital admissions, hospital readmissions, and emergency room visits for each comorbidity group. Results: In total, 13,062 incident HF patients were identified (mean age = 82.0 years; 54.8% women; 93.7% multimorbid; mean of 4.52 ± 2.06 chronic diseases). After one-year follow-up, there were 3316 deaths (25.3%) and 4630 all-cause hospitalisations (35.4%). After adjusting by gender, age, and inpatient/outpatient status, the mental cluster was associated (HR; 95% confidence interval) with a higher HR of death (1.08; 1.01–1.16) and all-cause hospitalisation (1.09; 1.02–1.16). Conclusions: Cardiovascular comorbidities are the most common and studied ones in HF patients; however, they are not the most strongly associated with negative impacts on health outcomes in these patients. Our findings suggest the importance of a holistic and integral approach in the care of HF patients and the need to take into account the entire spectrum of comorbidities for improving HF management in clinical practice.

The use of titanium as a biomaterial for the treatment of dental implants has been successful and has become the most viable and common option. However, in the last three decades, new alternatives have emerged, such as polymers that could replace metallic materials. The aim of this research work is to demonstrate the structural effects caused by the fatigue phenomenon and the comparison with polymeric materials that may be biomechanically viable by reducing the stress shielding effect at the bone–implant interface. A numerical simulation was performed using the finite element method. Variables such as Young’s modulus, Poisson’s coefficient, density, yield strength, ultimate strength, and the S-N curve were included. Prior to the simulation, a representative digital model of both a dental implant and the bone was developed. A maximum load of 550 N was applied, and the analysis was considered linear, homogeneous, and isotropic. The results obtained allowed us to observe the mechanical behavior of the dental implant by means of displacements and von Mises forces. They also show the critical areas where the implant tends to fail due to fatigue. Finally, this type of non-destructive analysis proves to be versatile, avoids experimentation on people and/or animals, and reduces costs, and the iteration is unlimited in evaluating various structural parameters (geometry, materials, properties, etc.).

El cultivo de arroz (Oryza sativa L.) representa una fuente de energía de importancia en la dieta humana, y en Nicaragua constituye un sustancial componente de la dieta de la población. El presente estudio fue exploratorio y tuvo como objetivo determinar la diversidad de artrópodos asociada al cultivo de arroz en el municipio de Sébaco, en el ciclo agrícola 2022-2023, una región intensiva en la producción de arroz. Se seleccionaron sistemas productivos con extensiones mayores a 100 hectáreas, en donde se empleó igual manejo agronómico y fitosanitario. Para el monitoreo de la entomofauna, en cada sistema productivo se seleccionaron diez puntos al azar y en cada punto se emplearon 20 pases dobles en forma de zig-zag con red entomológica. Se cuantifico el número de individuos por orden y familia; para el análisis de diversidad se agruparon por sus hábitos alimenticios. La información de la abundancia y riqueza se analizó mediante estudio descriptivo, análisis de varianza e índice de diversidad de Shannon Weaver y Simpson. Se encontraron siete órdenes, 13 familias y 16 géneros, la mayoría del hábito fitófago. La mayor abundancia correspondió a la especie T. orizicolus Muir (n=46.663), reportada en la fase reproductiva y maduración. Así mismo, Hydrellia sp (n=5.229), presentó las mayores poblaciones en la fase vegetativa. Dentro de los organismos benéficos sobresalieron las arañas (n=1.523) y Atrichopogum sp (n=419). Los índices de diversidad fueron bajos tanto en los sistemas productivos como en las diferentes fases fenológicas del cultivo.

Este trabajo analiza algunas de las dimensiones fundamentales de la influencia de la obra temprana de Martin Heidegger sobre la teoría política de Hannah Arendt. Como se sabe, la pensadora judía cursó algunos de sus más cruciales años universitarios bajo la tutoría del profesor alemán. En tal sentido, tanto la perspectiva hermenéutico-fenomenológica como los conceptos de “mundo” y praxis resultaron decisivos para definir, junto con la experiencia del totalitarismo, el sentido y la profundidad de la teoría política arendtiana. En líneas generales, se espera que la investigación permita no solo entender varias de las nociones centrales del pensamiento de Arendt dentro de su horizonte de sentido original, sino además visibilizar algunas de las potencialidades que la obra temprana de Heidegger posee a la hora de repensar la política y la pluralidad humana.

Abstract Background and Study Aims Our aim was to determine the impact of the SARS‐CoV‐2 pandemic on the diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Patients and Methods This prospective cohort study included individuals diagnosed with CRC between March 13, 2019 and June 20, 2021 across 21 Spanish hospitals. Two time periods were compared: prepandemic (from March 13, 2019 to March 13, 2020) and pandemic (from March 14, 2020 to June 20, 2021, lockdown period and 1 year after lockdown). Results We observed a 46.9% decrease in the number of CRC diagnoses (95% confidence interval (CI): 45.1%–48.7%) during the lockdown and 29.7% decrease (95% CI: 28.1%–31.4%) in the year after the lockdown. The proportion of patients diagnosed at stage I significantly decreased during the pandemic (21.7% vs. 19.0%; p = 0.025). Centers that applied universal preprocedure SARS‐CoV‐2 PCR testing experienced a higher reduction in the number of colonoscopies performed during the pandemic post‐lockdown (34.0% reduction; 95% CI: 33.6%–34.4% vs. 13.7; 95% CI: 13.4%–13.9%) and in the number of CRCs diagnosed (34.1% reduction; 95% CI: 31.4%–36.8% vs. 26.7%; 95% CI: 24.6%–28.8%). Curative treatment was received by 87.5% of patients diagnosed with rectal cancer prepandemic and 80.7% of patients during the pandemic post‐lockdown period (p = 0.002). Conclusions The COVID‐19 pandemic has led to a decrease in the number of diagnosed CRC cases and in the proportion of stage I CRC. The reduction in the number of colonoscopies and CRC diagnoses was higher in centers that applied universal SARS‐CoV‐2 PCR screening before colonoscopy. In addition, the COVID‐19 pandemic has affected curative treatment of rectal cancers.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is one of the most economically important infectious diseases for the pig industry worldwide. The disease was firstly reported in 1987 and became endemic in many countries. Since then, outbreaks caused by strains of high virulence have been reported several times in Asia, America and Europe. Interstitial pneumonia, microscopically characterised by thickened alveolar septa, is the hallmark lesion of PRRS. However, suppurative bronchopneumonia and proliferative and necrotising pneumonia are also observed, particularly when a virulent strain is involved. This raises the question of whether the infection by certain strains results in an overstimulation of the proinflammatory response and whether there is some degree of correlation between the strain involved and a particular pattern of lung injury. Thus, it is of interest to know how the inflammatory response is modulated in these cases due to the interplay between virus and host factors. This review provides an overview of the macroscopic, microscopic, and molecular pathology of PRRSV-1 strains in the lung, emphasising the differences between strains of different virulence.

El Tumor Odontogénico Adenomatoide es una neoplasia epitelial benigna no invasiva de crecimiento lento y asintomática que afecta al maxilar y a la mandíbula. Se presenta fundamentalmente en la segunda década de vida y la inclusión de los caninos permanentes se considera como un factor de riesgo. Objetivo: Demostrar que la patología descrita debe ser considerada como diagnóstico diferencial ante lesiones tumorales asociadas a caninos no erupcionados y su control postquirúrgico es fundamental para detectar posibles recidivas. Materiales y métodos: Se presenta un raro caso de un Tumor Odontógeno Adenomatoide del maxilar en un paciente de 18 años de edad que fue diagnosticado de manera tardía y presentó reaparición de la lesión a los 6 años de evolución. Resultados: Existe una relación entre la predilección de género en la inclusión de los caninos y la proliferación del tumor siendo en ambos casos más prevalente en el femenino. La recidiva del presente tumor es descrita como escaza o casi inexistente en la literatura científica, sin embargo, en nuestro caso el paciente evidenció reaparición de la lesión según la Radiografía Panorámica de control a los 6 años de evolución. Conclusiones: El Tumor Odontógeno Adenomatoide es una neoplasia mayormente identificada en la segunda década de vida, pero el diagnóstico debe ir enfocado hacia la prevención por medio de estudios imagenológicos periódicos que inician con el desarrollo de los órganos dentarios permanentes y concluyen con la erupción del tercer molar.

Lung cancer poses a global health challenge and stands as the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. However, its incidence, mortality, and characteristics are not uniform across all regions worldwide. Understanding the factors contributing to this diversity is crucial in a prevalent disease where most cases are diagnosed in advanced stages. Hence, prevention and early diagnosis emerge as the most efficient strategies to enhance outcomes. In Western societies, tobacco consumption constitutes the primary risk factor for lung cancer, accounting for up to 90% of cases. In other geographic locations, different significant factors play a fundamental role in disease development, such as individual genetic predisposition, or exposure to other carcinogens such as radon gas, environmental pollution, occupational exposures, or specific infectious diseases. Comprehensive clinical and molecular characterization of lung cancer in recent decades has enabled us to distinguish different subtypes of lung cancer with distinct phenotypes, genotypes, immunogenicity, treatment responses, and survival rates. The ultimate goal is to prevent and individualize lung cancer management in each community and improve patient outcomes.

Introduction and Objectives: The clinical course of hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) is modulated by environmental factors and genetic polymorphisms that interact with the virus, such as the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) and ligand Apolipoprotein E (ApoE); both are associated with lipid metabolism. However, the relationship of these genes with liver damage has not been jointly evaluated in Mexicans. The study aimed to identify a relationship between the LDLR polymorphism (C*52T, rs14158) and ApoE haplotype in anti-HCV positive patients with liver damage in a subpopulation of West Mexico. Materials and Patients: This cross-sectional study included 152 naïve anti-HCV positive patients; 110 were viral load (VL) positive (+ve), and 42 were VL negative(-ve). A medical-nutritional evaluation was registered. LDLR and ApoE genotypes were assessed by allelic discrimination. Comparative statistical analysis was performed between VL+ve and VL-ve adjusted by genotype distribution and liver damage. Written informed consent was obtained from the participants. Introduction and Objectives: Previous studies conducted by our research group have demonstrated a high frequency of fatty liver and metabolic-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in young Mexican population. Therefore, early detection of risk factors and metabolic abnormalities is important to prevent or reverse the progression to MASH. The objective of this study is to use non-invasive markers for the detection of insulin resistance (IR), the risk of fatty liver disease (FLD), liver damage, and metabolic-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in young adult population from West Mexico Materials and Patients: A cross-sectional study assessing the presence of IR using HOMA-IR and non-invasive assessment of the risk of fatty liver disease (FLD) (FLI ≥ 60), liver damage (HCG markers 19.6% to 58.8%), and metabolic associated steatohepatitis (MASH) (FIB-4: 1.45-3.25; APRI: ≥0.7-1.0; NAFLD Fibrosis Score: > 0.675) in young adults aged 18 to 45 years. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants. The Institutional Review Board approved this study. Results: Fifty-three participants (37 women and 16 men) with an average age of 29.53 ± 8.33 years were recruited. A 80.7% had overweight and obesity (class I, II, III), with an average waist-to-height ratio of 0.55 ± 0.09. Additionally, 80.8% of the participants had one or more metabolic abnormalities; hypercholesterolemia (25%), hypertriglyceridemia (39.2%), hypoalphalipoproteinemia (64%), and IR (54.3%). A risk of 39.6% for NAFLD (FLI), 42.95% for liver damage (HCG markers), and 2% - 4% for MASH with intermediate hepatic fibrosis (F2-F3) and significant according to the FIB-4, APRI, and NAFLD Fibrosis Score markers, respectively, were identified. Conclusions: A high prevalence of metabolic disorders and IR was detected, which may be related to a high risk of developing fatty liver disease (39.6%) and liver damage (42.95%), as well as MASH (2-4%) in the young Mexican adult population, suggesting the need of early prevention strategies.

IntroductionBovine tuberculosis (bTB) caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) remains a significant concern for public health. Direct real-time PCR and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) are proposed as alternative tools to enhance diagnostic precision and efficiency. This study aims to assess the diagnostic performance of a ddPCR assay targeting IS6110 for the detection of MTC DNA in both microbiological culture and fresh lymph node (LN) tissue samples obtained from cattle, in comparison with the established reference standard, the microbiological culture followed by real-time PCR. MethodsThe fresh LNs (N=100) were collected each from a different cattle carcass at the slaughterhouse. The limit of detection of ddPCR-IS6110 was set to 101 copies per 20 μl reaction.ResultsDdPCR-IS6110 detected 44 out of 49 reference-standard positive samples and yielded negative results in 47 out of 51 reference-standard negative samples, resulting in adjusted sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) of 90.76% [95% confidence interval (CI): 82.58 - 98.96%)], and 100% (95% CI: 100%) respectively. The estimated adjusted false negative rate (FNR) was 9.23% (95% CI: 1.04 - 17.42%) and the false positive rate (FPR) was 0% (95% CI: 0%). When directly applied from fresh bovine LN tissues, ddPCR-IS6110 identified 47 out of 49 reference-standard positive samples as ddPCR-IS6110-positive and 42 out of 51 reference-standard negative samples as ddPCR-IS6110-negative, resulting in adjusted Se and Sp values of 94.80% [95% (CI): 88.52 - 100%] and 100% (95% CI: 100%), respectively. The adjusted FNR was 5.20% (95% CI: 0 - 11.50%) and the FPR was 0% (95% CI: 0%). Noteworthy, ddPCR-IS6110 disclosed as positive 9 samples negative to reference-standard. DiscussionDdPCR-IS6110 proved to be a rapid, highly sensitive, and specific diagnostic tool as an alternative to reference-standard method.

Introduction. Seedlings formation under controlled conditions is essential for growing species of importance as strawberry. Since the artificial LED lighting technologic has allowed greater control of light, the variation of components such as the wavelength and intensity can be manipulated to form seedlings with different characteristics. However, it is necessary to generate original scientific information for the development of precise and efficient practices on light control. Objective. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the strawberry seedlings formation under different intensities of violet, blue and red LED light. Material and methods. The study was performed in 2020 at the Plant Genetics Laboratory of the Agronomy Department of the Universidad de Guanajuato, in the municipality of Irapuato, in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. Seeds were recovered from San Andreas cultivar fruits and seedlings were formed under violet, blue and red LED light at high, medium, and low intensities. Color determination of cotiledon area, chroma saturation index and Hue angle were performed. Physiotechnical variables, chemical and antioxidant activity were measured. Results. The most suitable treatments were violet light of high and medium intensities; as well as blue light of high intensity, due to the germination percentage exceeded at least 60 %. Seedlings did not lengthen or thin, presented the largest cotyledons areas and the highest chlorophyll concentrations. In addition, these light treatments consumed 31.2 % less electrical energy on average. Conclusions. Besides the white light, the most suitable treatments for strawberry seedlings formation were violet light at high and medium intensities, as well as blue light at high intensity. It is suggested that the violet and blue light treatments be evaluated in other cultivars to confirm the beneficial effect on the strawberry seedlings. Red light limited germination and the highest antioxidant activity was observed in this treatment.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for health care systems globally. This study aimed to explore the presence of mental illness in a Spanish cohort of COVID-19-infected population and to evaluate the association between the presence of specific mental health conditions and the risk of death and hospitalization. This is a retrospective cohort study including all individuals with confirmed infection by SARS-CoV-2 from the PRECOVID (Prediction in COVID-19) Study (Aragon, Spain). Mental health illness was defined as the presence of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, anxiety, cognitive disorders, depression and mood disorders, substance abuse, and personality and eating disorders. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the likelihood of 30-day all-cause mortality and COVID-19 related hospitalization based on baseline demographic and clinical variables, including the presence of specific mental conditions, by gender. We included 144,957 individuals with confirmed COVID-19 from the PRECOVID Study (Aragon, Spain). The most frequent diagnosis in this cohort was anxiety. However, some differences were observed by sex: substance abuse, personality disorders and schizophrenia were more frequently diagnosed in men, while eating disorders, depression and mood, anxiety and cognitive disorders were more common among women. The presence of mental illness, specifically schizophrenia spectrum and cognitive disorders in men, and depression and mood disorders, substance abuse, anxiety and cognitive and personality disorders in women, increased the risk of mortality or hospitalization after COVID-19, in addition to other well-known risk factors such as age, morbidity and treatment burden. Identifying vulnerable patient profiles at risk of serious outcomes after COVID-19 based on their mental health status will be crucial to improve their access to the healthcare system and the establishment of public health prevention measures for future outbreaks.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive and memory impairments and neuropathological abnormalities. AD has no cure, inadequate treatment options, and a limited understanding of possible prevention measures. Previous studies have demonstrated that AD model mice that received a diet high in the essential nutrient choline had reduced amyloidosis, cholinergic deficits, and gliosis, and increased neurogenesis. In this study, we investigated the lifelong effects of perinatal choline supplementation on behavior, cognitive function, and amyloidosis in AppNL-G-F AD model mice. Pregnant and lactating mice were given a diet containing either 1.1 g/kg (control) or 5 g/kg (supplemented) of choline chloride until weaning and subsequently, all offspring received the control diet throughout their life. At 3, 6, 9, and 12 months of age, animals were behaviorally tested in the Open Field Test, Elevated Plus Maze, Barnes Maze, and in a contextual fear conditioning paradigm. Immunohistochemical analysis of Aβ42 was also conducted on the brains of these mice. AppNL-G-F mice displayed hippocampal-dependent spatial learning deficits starting at 3-months-old that persisted until 12-months-old. These spatial learning deficits were fully prevented by perinatal choline supplementation at young ages (3 and 6 months) but not in older mice (12 months). AppNL-G-F mice also had impaired fearful learning and memory at 9- and 12-months-old that were diminished by choline supplementation. Perinatal choline supplementation reduced Aβ42 deposition in the amygdala, cortex, and hippocampus of AppNL-G-F mice. Together, these results demonstrate that perinatal choline supplementation is capable of preventing cognitive deficits and dampening amyloidosis in AppNL-G-F mice and suggest that ensuring adequate choline consumption during early life may be a valuable method to prevent or reduce AD dementia and neuropathology.

Este artículo se centra en el análisis de la construcción noticiosa de personajes en la cobertura de violencia de género y feminicidios en la prensa escrita nacional, enfocándose en el caso de Richard Choque Flores, un violador, feminicida y asesino en serie que atrajo la atención de la prensa boliviana durante varios meses. La creación de "personajes" en la narrativa periodística ayuda a los lectores a comprender fenómenos perturbadores como los crímenes de género y permite a los periodistas desarrollar contenido más allá de la mera presentación de hechos. Se destaca el uso de retratos mítico-biográficos como estrategia narrativa, pero se señalan patrones sensacionalistas y estigmatizadores en la cobertura del crimen. El artículo aboga por un enfoque crítico y ético en la cobertura de la violencia de género y sugiere que la prensa debe evitar incurrir en violencia mediática. En última instancia, se enfatiza la importancia de abordar la violencia de género y su impacto en la sociedad de manera responsable y consciente en los medios de comunicación.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a complex disease with a strong hereditably component. Several genetic variants have recently been associated with POAG, partially due to technological improvements such as next-generation sequencing (NGS). The aim of this study was to genetically analyze patients with POAG to determine the contribution of rare variants and hypomorphic alleles associated with glaucoma as a future method of diagnosis and early treatment. Seventy-two genes potentially associated with adult glaucoma were studied in 61 patients with POAG. Additionally, we sequenced the coding sequence of CYP1B1 gene in 13 independent patients to deep analyze the potential association of hypomorphic CYP1B1 alleles in the pathogenesis of POAG. We detected nine rare variants in 16% of POAG patients studied by NGS. Those rare variants are located in CYP1B1, SIX6, CARD10, MFN1, OPTC, OPTN, and WDR36 glaucoma-related genes. Hypomorphic variants in CYP1B1 and SIX6 genes have been identified in 8% of the total POAG patient assessed. Our findings suggest that NGS could be a valuable tool to clarify the impact of genetic component on adult glaucoma. However, in order to demonstrate the contribution of these rare variants and hypomorphic alleles to glaucoma, segregation and functional studies would be necessary. The identification of new variants and hypomorphic alleles in glaucoma patients will help to configure the genetic identity of these patients, in order to make an early and precise molecular diagnosis.
