Galaxies throughout the last 12 Gyr of cosmic time follow a single, universal fundamental plane that relates their star-formation rates (SFRs), stellar masses (M*) and chemical abundances. Deviation from these fundamental scaling relations would imply a drastic change in the processes that regulate galaxy evolution. Observations have hinted at the possibility that this relation may be broken in the very early universe. However, until recently, chemical abundances of galaxies could be only measured reliably as far back as redshift z=3.3. With JWST, we can now characterize the SFR, M⋆, and gas-phase metallicity of galaxies during the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang, at redshifts z≈7−10. Here we show that galaxies at this epoch follow universal SFR- M⋆ main-sequence and mass-metallicity scaling relations, but their chemical abundance is a factor of three lower than expected from the fundamental plane of later galaxies. Compared to state-of-the-art simulations, these findings suggest a more rapid onset of galaxy assembly and star formation than previously anticipated, and further indicate that galaxies at this time are still intimately connected with the intergalactic medium and subject to continuous infall of pristine gas which effectively dilutes their metal abundances.

We use a sample of z = 0 galaxies visually classified as slow rotators (SRs) in the eagle hydrodynamical simulations to explore the effect of galaxy mergers on their formation, characterise their intrinsic galaxy properties, and study the connection between quenching and kinematic transformation. SRs that have had major or minor mergers (mass ratios ≥0.3 and 0.1 − 0.3, respectively) tend to have a higher triaxiality parameter and ex-situ stellar fractions than those that had exclusively very minor mergers or formed in the absence of mergers (“no-merger” SRs). No-merger SRs are more compact, have lower black hole-to-stellar mass ratios and quenched later than other SRs, leaving imprints on their z = 0 chemical composition. For the vast majority of SRs we find that quenching, driven by active galactic nuclei feedback, precedes kinematic transformation, except for satellite SRs, in which these processes happen in tandem. However, in ≈50 per cent of these satellites, satellite-satellite mergers are responsible for their SR fate, while environment (i.e. tidal field and interactions with the central) can account for the transformation in the rest. By splitting SRs into kinematic sub-classes, we find that flat SRs prefer major mergers; round SRs prefer minor or very minor mergers; prolate SRs prefer gas-poor mergers. Flat and prolate SRs are more common among satellites hosted by massive haloes ($>10^{13.6}\, \rm M_{\odot }$) and centrals of high masses ($M_{\star } > 10^{10.5}\, \rm M_{\odot }$). Although eagle galaxies display kinematic properties that broadly agree with observations, there are areas of disagreement, such as inverted stellar age and velocity dispersion profiles. We discuss these and how upcoming simulations can solve them.

We study the origin of misalignments between the stellar and star-forming gas components of simulated galaxies in the eagle simulations. We focus on galaxies with stellar masses ≥109 M⊙ at 0 ≤ z ≤ 1. We compare the frequency of misalignments with observational results from the SAMI survey and find that overall, eagle can reproduce the incidence of misalignments in the field and clusters, as well as the dependence on stellar mass and optical colour within the uncertainties. We study the dependence on kinematic misalignments with internal galaxy properties and different processes related to galaxy mergers and sudden changes in stellar and star-forming gas mass. We find that galaxy mergers happen in similar frequency in mis- and aligned galaxies, with the main difference being misaligned galaxies showing a higher tidal field strength and fraction of ex-situ stars. We find that despite the environment being relevant in setting the conditions to misalign the star-forming gas, the properties internal to galaxies play a crucial role in determining whether the gas quickly aligns with the stellar component or not. Hence, galaxies that are more triaxial and more dispersion dominated display more misalignments because they are inefficient at realigning the star-forming gas towards the stellar angular momentum vector.

Mapping the evolution of galaxy colours, from blue star forming to red passive systems, is fundamental to understand the processes involved in galaxy evolution. To this end, we reconstruct the colour evolution of low-redshift galaxies, combining stellar templates with star formation and metallicity histories of galaxies from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey and shark semi-analytical model. We use these colour histories to robustly characterize the evolution of red and blue galaxy populations over cosmic time. Using a Gaussian Mixture Model to characterize the colour distribution at any given epoch and stellar mass, we find both observations and simulations strongly favour a model with only two populations (blue and red), with no evidence for a third 'green' population. We map the evolution of mean, weight, and scatter of the blue and red populations as a function of both stellar mass and lookback time. Using our simulated galaxy catalogue as a testbed, we find that we can accurately recover galaxies colour histories up to a lookback time of similar to 6 Gyr. We find that both populations show little change in the mean colour for low-mass galaxies, while the colours at the massive end become significantly redder with time. The stellar mass above which the galaxy population is predominantly red decreases by 0.3 dex in the last 5 Gyrs. We find a good agreement between observations and simulations, with the largest tension being that massive galaxies from shark are too blue (a known issue with many galaxy evolution models).

We examine how the post-processed content of molecular hydrogen (H2) in galaxies from the TNG100 cosmological, hydrodynamic simulation changes with environment at z = 0, assessing central/satellite status and host halo mass. We make close comparisons with the carbon monoxide (CO) emission survey xCOLD GASS where possible, having mock-observed TNG100 galaxies to match the survey’s specifications. For a representative sample of host haloes across 1011 ≲ M200c/M⊙ < 1014.6, TNG100 predicts that satellites with $m_* \ge 10^9\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$ should have a median deficit in their H2 fractions of ∼0.6 dex relative to centrals of the same stellar mass. Once observational and group-finding uncertainties are accounted for, the signature of this deficit decreases to ∼0.2 dex. Remarkably, we calculate a deficit in xCOLD GASS satellites’ H2 content relative to centrals of 0.2–0.3 dex, in line with our prediction. We further show that TNG100 and SDSS data exhibit continuous declines in the average star formation rates of galaxies at fixed stellar mass in denser environments, in quantitative agreement with each other. By tracking satellites from their moment of infall in TNG100, we directly show that atomic hydrogen (H i) is depleted at fractionally higher rates than H2 on average. Supporting this picture, we find that the H2/H i mass ratios of satellites are elevated relative to centrals in xCOLD GASS. We provide additional predictions for the effect of environment on H2 – both absolute and relative to H i – that can be tested with spectral stacking in future CO surveys.

ABSTRACT We have recently developed a post-processing framework to estimate the abundance of atomic and molecular hydrogen (H i and H2, respectively) in galaxies in large-volume cosmological simulations. Here we compare the H i and H2 content of IllustrisTNG galaxies to observations. We mostly restrict this comparison to z ≈ 0 and consider six observational metrics: the overall abundance of H i and H2, their mass functions, gas fractions as a function of stellar mass, the correlation between H2 and star formation rate, the spatial distribution of gas, and the correlation between gas content and morphology. We find generally good agreement between simulations and observations, particularly for the gas fractions and the H i mass–size relation. The H2 mass correlates with star formation rate as expected, revealing an almost constant depletion time that evolves up to z = 2 as observed. However, we also discover a number of tensions with varying degrees of significance, including an overestimate of the total neutral gas abundance at z = 0 by about a factor of 2 and a possible excess of satellites with no or very little neutral gas. These conclusions are robust to the modelling of the H i/H2 transition. In terms of their neutral gas properties, the IllustrisTNG simulations represent an enormous improvement over the original Illustris run. All data used in this paper are publicly available as part of the IllustrisTNG data release.

Measuring the HI-halo mass scaling relation (HIHM) is fundamental to understanding the role of HI in galaxy formation and its connection to structure formation. While direct measurements of the HI mass in haloes are possible using HI-spectral stacking, the reported shape of the relation depends on the techniques used to measure it (e.g. monotonically increasing with mass versus flat, mass-independent). Using a simulated HI and optical survey produced with the SHARK semi-analytic galaxy formation model, we investigate how well different observational techniques can recover the intrinsic, theoretically predicted, HIHM relation. We run a galaxy group finder and mimic the HI stacking procedure adopted by different surveys and find we can reproduce their observationally derived HIHM relation. However, none of the adopted techniques recover the underlying HIHM relation predicted by the simulation. We find that systematic effects in halo mass estimates of galaxy groups modify the inferred shape of the HIHM relation from the intrinsic one in the simulation, while contamination by interloping galaxies, not associated with the groups, contribute to the inferred HI mass of a halo mass bin, when using large velocity windows for stacking. The effect of contamination is maximal at Mvir~10^(12-12.5)Msol. Stacking methods based on summing the HI emission spectra to infer the mean HI mass of galaxies of different properties belonging to a group suffer minimal contamination but are strongly limited by the use of optical counterparts, which miss the contribution of dwarf galaxies. Deep spectroscopic surveys will provide significant improvements by going deeper while maintaining high spectroscopic completeness; for example, the WAVES survey will recover ~52% of the total HI mass of the groups with Mvir~10^(14)Msol compared to ~21% in GAMA., Comment: 20 pages,16 figures. The inflow of cosmological gas onto haloes, while challenging to directly observe and quantify, plays a fundamental role in the baryon cycle of galaxies. Using the EAGLE suite of hydrodynamical simulations, we present a thorough exploration of the physical properties of gas accreting onto haloes -- namely, its spatial characteristics, density, temperature, and metallicity. Classifying accretion as ``hot'' or `` cold'' based on a temperature cut of $10^{5.5}{\rm K}$, we find that the covering fraction ($f_{\rm cov}$) of cold-mode accreting gas is significantly lower than the hot-mode, with $z=0$ $f_{\rm cov}$ values of $\approx 50\%$ and $\approx 80\%$ respectively. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback in EAGLE reduces inflow $f_{\rm cov}$ values by $\approx 10\%$, with outflows decreasing the solid angle available for accretion flows. Classifying inflow by particle history, we find that gas on first-infall onto a halo is metal-depleted by $\approx 2$~dex compared to pre-processed gas, which we find to mimic the circum-galactic medium (CGM) in terms of metal content. We also show that high (low) halo-scale gas accretion rates are associated with metal-poor (rich) CGM in haloes below $10^{12}M_{\odot}$, and that variation in halo-scale gas accretion rates may offer a physical explanation for the enhanced scatter in the star-forming main sequence at low ($\lesssim10^{9}M_{\odot}$) and high ($\gtrsim10^{10}M_{\odot}$) stellar masses. Our results highlight how gas inflow influences several halo- and galaxy-scale properties, and the need to combine kinematic and chemical data in order to confidently break the degeneracy between accreting and outgoing gas in CGM observations., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures. We present a revised measurement of the optical extragalactic background light (EBL), based on the contribution of resolved galaxies to the integrated galaxy light (IGL). The cosmic optical background radiation (COB), encodes the light generated by star-formation, and provides a wealth of information about the cosmic star formation history (CSFH). We combine wide and deep galaxy number counts from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA) and Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS), along with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive and other deep survey datasets, in 9 multi-wavelength filters to measure the COB in the range from 0.35 micron to 2.2 micron. We derive the luminosity density in each band independently and show good agreement with recent and complementary estimates of the optical-EBL from very high-energy (VHE) experiments. Our error analysis suggests that the IGL and Gamma-ray measurements are now fully consistent to within ~10%, suggesting little need for any additional source of diffuse light beyond the known galaxy population. We use our revised IGL measurements to constrain the cosmic star-formation history, and place amplitude constraints on a number of recent estimates. As a consistency check, we can now demonstrate convincingly, that the CSFH, stellar mass growth, and the optical-EBL provide a fully consistent picture of galaxy evolution. We conclude that the peak of star-formation rate lies in the range 0.066-0.076 Msol/yr/Mpc^3 at a lookback time of 9.1 to 10.9 Gyrs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the eddington bias corrected specific star formation rate function (sSFRF) at different stellar mass scales from a subsample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release DR7 (SDSS), which is considered complete both in terms of stellar mass (M-*) and star formation rate (SFR). The above enable us to study qualitatively and quantitatively quenching, the distribution of passive/star-forming galaxies and perform comparisons with the predictions from state-of-the-art cosmological models, within the same M-* and SFR limits. We find that at the low-mass end (M-* = 10(9.5)-10(10)M(circle dot)) the sSFRF is mostly dominated by star-forming objects. However, moving to the two more massive bins (M-* = 10(10)-10(10.5) M-circle dot and M* = 10(10.5)-10(11)M(circle dot)) a bimodality with two peaks emerges. One peak represents the star-forming population, while the other describes a rising passive population. The bi-modal form of the sSFRFs is not reproduced by a range of cosmological simulations (e.g. Illustris, EAGLE, Mufasa, and IllustrisTNG) which instead generate mostly the star-forming population, while a bi-modality emerges in others (e.g. L-Galaxies, Shark, and Simba). Our findings reflect the need for the employed quenching schemes in state-of-the-artmodels to be reconsidered, involving prescriptions that allow 'quenched galaxies' to retain a small level of SF activity (sSFR = 10(-11) 10(-12) yr(-1)) and generate an adequate passive population/bi-modality even at intermediate masses (M-* = 10(10)-10(10.5)M(circle dot)).

We present an overview of the Middle Ages Galaxy Properties with Integral Field Spectroscopy (MAGPI) survey, a Large Program on the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope. MAGPI is designed to study the physical drivers of galaxy transformation at a lookback time of 3–4 Gyr, during which the dynamical, morphological, and chemical properties of galaxies are predicted to evolve significantly. The survey uses new medium-deep adaptive optics aided Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of fields selected from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, providing a wealth of publicly available ancillary multi-wavelength data. With these data, MAGPI will map the kinematic and chemical properties of stars and ionised gas for a sample of 60 massive ( ) central galaxies at in a representative range of environments (isolated, groups and clusters). The spatial resolution delivered by MUSE with Ground Layer Adaptive Optics ( arcsec FWHM) will facilitate a direct comparison with Integral Field Spectroscopy surveys of the nearby Universe, such as SAMI and MaNGA, and at higher redshifts using adaptive optics, for example, SINS. In addition to the primary (central) galaxy sample, MAGPI will deliver resolved and unresolved spectra for as many as 150 satellite galaxies at , as well as hundreds of emission-line sources at . This paper outlines the science goals, survey design, and observing strategy of MAGPI. We also present a first look at the MAGPI data, and the theoretical framework to which MAGPI data will be compared using the current generation of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations including EAGLE, MAGNETICUM, HORIZON-AGN, and ILLUSTRIS-TNG. Our results show that cosmological hydrodynamical simulations make discrepant predictions in the spatially resolved properties of galaxies at . MAGPI observations will place new constraints and allow for tangible improvements in galaxy formation theory.

Large-scale cosmological simulations of galaxy formation currently do not resolve the densities at which molecular hydrogen forms, implying that the atomic-to-molecular transition must be modeled either on the fly or in postprocessing. We present an improved postprocessing framework to estimate the abundance of atomic and molecular hydrogen and apply it to the IllustrisTNG simulations. We compare five different models for the atomic-to-molecular transition, including empirical, simulation-based, and theoretical prescriptions. Most of these models rely on the surface density of neutral hydrogen and the ultraviolet (UV) flux in the Lyman-Werner band as input parameters. Computing these quantities on the kiloparsec scale resolved by the simulations emerges as the main challenge. We show that the commonly used Jeans length approximation to the column density of a system can be biased and exhibits large cell-to-cell scatter. Instead, we propose to compute all surface quantities in face-on projections and perform the modeling in two dimensions. In general, the two methods agree on average, but their predictions diverge for individual galaxies and for models based on the observed midplane pressure of galaxies. We model the UV radiation from young stars by assuming a constant escape fraction and optically thin propagation throughout the galaxy. With these improvements, we find that the five models for the atomic-to-molecular transition roughly agree on average but that the details of the modeling matter for individual galaxies and the spatial distribution of molecular hydrogen. We emphasize that the estimated molecular fractions are approximate due to the significant systematic uncertainties.

We investigate the influence of environment on the cold-gas properties of galaxies at z = 0 within the TNG100 cosmological, magnetohydrodynamic simulation, part of the IllustrisTNG suite. We extend previous post-processing methods for breaking gas cells into their atomic and molecular phases, and build detailed mocks to comprehensively compare to the latest surveys of atomic hydrogen (H i) in nearby galaxies, namely ALFALFA and xGASS. We use TNG100 to explore the H i content, star formation activity, and angular momentum of satellite galaxies, each as a function of environment, and find that satellites are typically a factor of ≳33 poorer in H i than centrals of the same stellar mass, with the exact offset depending sensitively on parent halo mass. Due to the large physical scales on which H i measurements are made (~45-245 kpc), contributions from gas not bound to the galaxy of interest but in the same line of sight crucially lead to larger H i mass measurements in the mocks in many cases, ultimately aligning with observations. This effect is mass-dependent and naturally greater for satellites than centrals, as satellites are never isolated by definition. We also show that H i stripping in TNG100 satellites is closely accompanied by quenching, in tension with observational data that instead favour that H i is preferentially stripped before star formation is reduced.
