Abstract: Molecular fluorescence from H2TBP porphyrin (H2TBPP) films on Ag substrate is excited by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) at ambient conditions. The molecular films are prepared by spin-casting method. The thickness of films can be controlled by the times of dropping H2TBPP solution. Molecular fluorescence of as-above prepared H2TBPP films with 4–14nm thickness at both polarities of applied bias voltage are well defined in good matching with its photoluminescence spectrum, which suggests the same decay channel associated with the HOMO–LUMO radiative transitions similar to H2TBPP/Au. The thickness dependence of light emission intensity of molecular fluorescence has been studied. The results show that for thicker film, molecular fluoresceence tends to be much stronger due to the effective decoupling of the emitter from the metal substrate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), characterized by chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, involves angiogenesis as a key pathogenic mechanism. Ginsenoside Rg3, derived from the traditional Chinese herb ginseng, is recognized for its anti-angiogenic properties but is limited by low oral bioavailability. This necessitates the development of an alternative delivery system to improve its therapeutic effectiveness. Methods: Pluronic F-127 (F127) and Pluronic F-68 (F68) were used to construct Rg3-loaded thermosensitive hydrogel Gel-Rg3. Meanwhile, a series of physicochemical properties were determined. Then the safety and pharmacological activity of Gel-Rg3 were evaluated in vitro and in vivo using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and colitis mouse model, in order to initially validate the potential of Gel-Rg3 for the treatment of IBD. Results: We engineered a rectally administrable, thermosensitive Gel-Rg3 hydrogel using F127 and F68, which forms at body temperature, enhancing Rg3's intestinal retention and slowly releasing the drug. In vitro, Gel-Rg3 demonstrated superior anti-angiogenic activity by inhibiting HUVEC proliferation, migration, and tube formation. It also proved safer and better suited for IBD's delicate intestinal environment than unformulated Rg3. In vivo assessments confirmed increased intestinal adhesion and anti-angiogenic efficacy. Conclusions: The Gel-Rg3 hydrogel shows promise for IBD therapy by effectively inhibiting angiogenesis via rectal delivery, overcoming Rg3's bioavailability limitations with improved safety and efficacy. • Forest exposure is a therapeutic strategy for promoting physical and mental health. • The changes of SBP, ln HF, ln (LF/HF) and tension-anxiety depended on duration. • The changes of HR and ln (LF/HF) depended on methods of intervention. • Most of the physiological and psychological parameters showed publication bias. Exposure to forest environment is beneficial to human health and has complex physiological and psychological effects. Here, we synthesized the results from 40 peer-reviewed publications, and conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the general responses of 15 variables related to physiological and psychological functions to forest exposure. We summarized the evidence that forest exposure was beneficial to health, such as reducing systolic blood pressure (SMD = −0.27), diastolic blood pressure (SMD = −0.28), heart rate (SMD = −0.27), sympathetic nervous activity (SMD = −0.24), salivary cortisol (SMD = −0.26), and increasing parasympathetic nervous activity (SMD = 0.23). Evidence showed that lower levels of systolic blood pressure and sympathetic nervous activity, and higher levels of parasympathetic nervous activity were associated with duration exposure to the forest, while lower levels of heart rate and higher levels of parasympathetic nervous activity were associated with methods of intervention with forest environment. When exposed to the forest, it was positive in terms of comfortable – uncomfortable (SMD = 2.07), natural – artificial (SMD = 2.56), and soothing – awakening (SMD = 2.01). Our results also showed that significant, moderate-sized reductions in negative emotions, such as anger, confusion, depression and fatigue (SMD = −0.73–−1.28), but large-sized improvements in vigor (SMD = 0.64) following exposure to forest environments. Subgroup analysis of duration and intervention methods showed that the psychological effects of forest exposure had no significant difference among different groups except for the effect of duration on tension-anxiety. Publication bias was detected in some parameters. Further large-scale clinical trials should be conducted to identify the mechanism of forest exposure to human health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mineral carbonation as a way of carbon storage has received a particular attention in the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2) emission. This work gives a comprehensive description of the research trends and hotspots in the field of mineral carbonation for carbon storage based on bibliometric analysis. A total of 1507 articles were collected from the Web of Science database from 2010 to 2022 and analyzed in details, using a Citepace and VOSviewer software. Keyword cluster analysis indicates that research on mineral carbonation mainly involves natural minerals, industrial wastes, and cement-based materials. Research advances on carbon storage via mineral carbonation are summarized from the aspects of magnesium-based feedstocks and calcium-based feedstocks. Direct aqueous carbonation and indirect carbonation are the most promising methods. Mining tailings and industrial wastes are promising feedstocks for mineral carbonation. The slow kinetics and low carbonation capacity of feedstocks are the main obstacles for industrial application. Finally, challenges and prospects in mineral carbonation are put forward, which is conducive to its rapid and balanced development. Background: In knee osteoarthritis (KOA), treatments involving knee injections of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSC), adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSC), or umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSC) have shown promise in alleviating symptoms. However, which types of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have the best therapeutic outcomes remain uncertain. Method: We systematically searched PubMed, OVID, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library until January 1, 2024. The study evaluated five endpoints: Visual Analog Score (VAS) for Pain, Range of Motion (ROM), Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS), Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and adverse events (ADs). Standard meta-analysis and network meta-analysis were performed using Stata 16.0. Results: Fifteen studies involving 585 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Standard meta-analysis revealed significant improvements with MSCs in VAS score (P < 0.001), knee ROM (P < 0.001), and WOMAC (P < 0.016) compared to traditional therapy. In the network meta-analysis, autologous MSCs significantly improved VAS score [SMD = 2.94, 95% CI (1.90, 4.56)] and knee ROM [SMD = 0.26, 95% CI (0.08, 0.82)] compared to traditional therapy. Similarly, BM-MSC significantly improved VAS score [SMD = 0.31, 95% CI (0.11, 0.91)] and knee ROM [SMD = 0.26, 95% CI (0.08, 0.82)] compared to hyaluronic acid. However, compared with traditional therapy, autologous or allogeneic MSCs were associated with more adverse reactions [SMD = 0.11, 95% CI (0.02, 0.59)], [SMD = 0.13, 95% CI (0.002, 0.72)]. Based on the surface under the cumulative ranking results, autologous BM-MSC showed the most improvement in ROM and pain relief in KOA patients, UC-MSC (SUCRA 94.1%) were most effective for positive WORMS, and AD-MSC (SUCRA 70.6%) were most effective for WOMAC-positive patients. Conclusion: MSCs transplantation effectively treats KOA patients, with autologous BM-MSC potentially offering more excellent benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mineral carbonation using natural minerals or industrial wastes is a safe and promising strategy for CO 2 sequestration. Application of industrial wastes for this purpose has significant ecological and environmental value, which is one of the key green technologies in the global carbon mitigation. This review summarizes the current research status of CO 2 mineralization by industrial wastes. This work surveys the mechanisms and capacities of CO 2 mineralization using different industrial wastes (mainly steel slags, blast furnace slags, coal fly ash, waste gypsum, and red mud), evaluates the influence of carbonation pathways and process parameters on the CO 2 sequestration capacity, and analyzes the current industrial application status of CO 2 sequestration using industrial wastes. Direct aqueous carbonation and indirect carbonation are the two most studied and promising mineralization routes. The leaching-mineralization cycle process has great potential for industrial application, especially for the treatment of coal fly ash, steel slag and other wastes containing calcium oxide, owing to the stable cycle performance of the absorbers. Researchers pay more attention to CO 2 mineralization by steel slag compared to other wastes, and the capacity of CO 2 mineralization varies greatly for different wastes. Several reports already reported carbonation effectiveness up to 100%. A CO 2 sequestration capacity reached 536 g/kg for steel slag and 361 g/kg of blast furnace slag, revealing superior properties of these materials. CO 2 sequestration using industrial wastes benefits CO 2 emission reduction and comprehensive utilization of industrial wastes. To overcome the problem of the high energy consumption for regeneration of absorbent, a novel integrated CO 2 absorption-mineralization process is currently widely studied. A possibility of co-production of value-added products - like different types of zeolite or lithium orthosilicate based adsorbents was highlighted, improving the economic balance of the overall process. More studies on pilot scale should be performed, to fully confirm the feasibility of developed technologies. Application of these developments is still faced with significant issues, including low carbonation efficiency, poor product quality, high process cost, and insufficient mass and heat transfer. In future studies, it is necessary to investigate the mechanisms of CO 2 sequestration, the optimization of process parameters, the exploration of ways to accelerate carbonation, and the generation of value-added products or effective by-product utilization. This study examines the dependence of Arctic stratospheric polar vortex (SPV) variations on the meridional positions of the sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies associated with the first leading mode of North Pacific SST. The principal component 1 (PC1) of the first leading mode is obtained by empirical orthogonal function decomposition. Reanalysis data, numerical experiments, and CMIP5 model outputs all suggest that the PC1 events (positive-minus-negative PC1 events), located relatively northward (i.e., North PC1 events), more easily weaken the Arctic SPV compared to the PC1 events located relatively southward (i.e., South PC1 events). The analysis indicates that the North PC1-related Aleutian low anomaly is located over the northern North Pacific and thus enhances the climatological trough, which strengthens the planetary-scale wave 1 at mid-to-high latitudes and thereby weakens the SPV. The weakened stratospheric circulation further extends into the troposphere and favors negative surface temperature anomalies over Eurasia. By contrast, the South PC1-related Aleutian low anomaly is located relatively southward, and its constructive interference with the climatological trough is less efficient at high latitudes. Thus, the South PC1 events could not induce an evident enhancement of the planetary-scale waves at high latitudes and thereby a weakening of the SPV on average. The Eurasian cooling associated with South PC1 events (positive-minus-negative PC1 events) is also not prominent. The results of this study suggest that the meridional positions of the PC1 events may be useful for predicting the Arctic SPV and Eurasian surface temperature variations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• A novel hybrid arc suppression device for single line-to-ground faults is proposed. • Costs and performance are comparison with existing methods in detail. • The effectiveness and the robustness are analyzed from various aspects. Traditional passive arc suppression devices (ASDs) do not provide complete compensation for single line-to-ground (SLG) fault currents. Meanwhile, active ASDs are expensive. This study proposes a novel hybrid ASD to balance compensation and cost. The hybrid ASD consists of a passive part and an active part. To reduce the fault voltage to near zero, the passive part uses a single-phase isolating transformer and two sets of phase-selection switches. The active part, which compensates for the residual voltage caused by the transformer's leakage impedance, is connected to the secondary side of the transformer and the ground using a small-capacity inverter. A model predictive control (MPC) method is employed as the controller. We conducted simulations and experiments for various SLG fault cases, which demonstrated the effectiveness and robustness of the hybrid ASD in arc suppression. Heterogeneous advanced oxidation process has been widely studied as an effective method for removing organic pollutants in wastewater, but the development of efficient catalysts is still challenging. This review summaries the present status of researches on biochar/layered double hydroxides composites (BLDHCs) as catalysts for treatment of organic wastewater. The synthesis methods of layered double hydroxides, the characterizations of BLDHCs, the impacts of process factors influencing catalytic performance, and research advances in various advanced oxidation processes are discussed in this work. The integration of layered double hydroxides and biochar provides synthetic effects for improving pollutant removal. The enhanced pollutant degradation in heterogeneous Fenton, sulfate radical-based, sono-assisted, and photo-assisted processes using BLDHCs have been verified. Pollutant degradation in heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes using BLDHCs is influenced by process factors such as catalyst dosage, oxidant addition, solution pH, reaction time, temperature, and co-existing substances. BLDHCs are promising catalysts due to the unique features including easy preparation, distinct structure, adjustable metal ions, and high stability. Currently, catalytic degradation of organic pollutants using BLDHCs is still in its infancy. Precise quantification of trace components in whole blood via fluorescence is of great significance. However, the applicability of current fluorescent probes in whole blood is largely hindered by the strong blood autofluorescence. Here, we proposed a blood autofluorescence‐suppressed sensing strategy to develop an activable fluorescent probe for quantification of trace analyte in whole blood. Based on inner filter effect, by screening fluorophores whose absorption overlapped with the emission of blood, a redshift BODIPY quencher with an absorption wavelength ranging from 600–700 nm was selected for its superior quenching efficiency and high brightness. Two 7‐nitrobenzo[c] [1,2,5] oxadiazole ether groups were introduced onto the BODIPY skeleton for quenching its fluorescence and the response of H2S, a gas signal molecule that can hardly be quantified because of its low concentration in whole blood. Such detection system shows a pretty low background signal and high signal‐to‐back ratio, the probe thus achieved the accurate quantification of endogenous H2S in 20‐fold dilution of whole blood samples, which is the first attempt of quantifying endogenous H2S in whole blood. Moreover, this autofluorescence‐suppressed sensing strategy could be expanded to other trace analytes detection in whole blood, which may accelerate the application of fluorescent probes in clinical blood test. Total column ozone (TCO) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is lower than that over other regions at the same latitude, particularly in summer. This feature is known as the "TP ozone valley". This study evaluates long-term changes in TCO and the ozone valley over the TP from 1984 to 2100 using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). The TP ozone valley consists of two low centers, one is located in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS), and the other is in the middle and upper stratosphere. Overall, the CMIP6 models simulate the low ozone center in the UTLS well and capture the spatial characteristics and seasonal cycle of the TP ozone valley, with spatial correlation coefficients between the modeled TCO and the Multi Sensor Reanalysis version 2 (MSR2) TCO observations greater than 0.8 for all CMIP6 models. Further analysis reveals that models which use fully coupled and online stratospheric chemistry schemes simulate the anticorrelation between the 150 hPa geopotential height and zonal anomaly of TCO over the TP better than models without interactive chemistry schemes. This suggests that coupled chemical-radiative-dynamical processes play a key role in the simulation of the TP ozone valley. Most CMIP6 models underestimate the low center in the middle and upper stratosphere when compared with the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) observations. However, the bias in the middle and upper stratospheric ozone simulations has a marginal effect on the simulation of the TP ozone valley.
