Abstract

Six-dimensional quantum dynamics calculations on dissociative scattering of H2 and D2 from Pt(111) are performed.The six-dimensional potential energy surface used was generated using density functional theory employingthe generalized gradient approximation. The isotope effect, the effect of widening the rotational distribution on the dissociationprobability and the effect of the energy dispersion are investigated, as they are possible reasons for a discrepancybetween previous theoretical work and molecular beam experiments. Abstract

The scattering of hydrogen from Cu(100) at normal incidence was studied experimentally using molecular beam techniques with simulated Raman pumping. The same system was theoretically studied using six dimensional wave packet calculations. A new potential energy surface was employed that was computed with density functional theory. Theory and experiment were found to be in good agreement with survival probability.

179. STICKING OF HCL AND CLOH TO ICE - A COMPUTATIONAL STUDY

Abstract

We present results of classical trajectory calculations modeling physical adsorption of HCl and ClOH on single-crystal ice under stratospheric conditions. The adsorption energy that we calculate for adsorption of ClOH on ice (-60 kJ/mol) is in excellent agreement with experiment. On the other hand, the calculated surface coverage of single-crystal ice by HCl is orders of magnitude smaller than the values obtained experimentally for adsorption of HCl on vapor-deposited ice. The results suggest that the high surface coverages found in experiments cannot be due to physisorption alone. © 1992 American Chemical Society.
