Abstract

Recent discourse in the career studies literature suggests that careers become more boundaryless and more global (Baruch and Reis, 2016). Students, who are future employees of MNCs are largely excluded from the global careers conversation. Our study has a primary focus on students' career intentions and students' decision making regarding their career trajectories. We discuss students' career intentions and local vs global career trajectories in the context of global mobility and international career development literature. We contribute to the discussion of career trajectories and based on Vandor (2009)'s Intention to work abroad variables, propose eight distinct global vs local career trajectories. We test them with empirical data from the sample of more than 400 business students and support with qualitative analysis based on journals data analysis from 60 students. Abstract

Abstract Background Epigenome-wide association studies of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) have been reported. However, few have examined PM2.5 components (PMCs) and sources or included repeated measures. The lack of high-resolution exposure measurements is the key limitation. We hypothesized that significant changes in DNA methylation might vary by PMCs and the sources. Methods We predicted the annual average of 14 PMCs using novel high-resolution exposure models across the contiguous U.S., between 2000–2018. The resolution was 50 m × 50 m in the Greater Boston Area. We also identified PM2.5 sources using positive matrix factorization. We repeatedly collected blood samples and measured leukocyte DNAm with the Illumina HumanMethylation450K BeadChip in the Normative Aging Study. We then used median regression with subject-specific intercepts to estimate the associations between long-term (one-year) exposure to PMCs / PM2.5 sources and DNA methylation at individual cytosine-phosphate-guanine CpG sites. Significant probes were identified by the number of independent degrees of freedom approach, using the number of principal components explaining > 95% of the variation of the DNA methylation data. We also performed regional and pathway analyses to identify significant regions and pathways. Results We included 669 men with 1,178 visits between 2000–2013. The subjects had a mean age of 75 years. The identified probes, regions, and pathways varied by PMCs and their sources. For example, iron was associated with 6 probes and 6 regions, whereas nitrate was associated with 15 probes and 3 regions. The identified pathways from biomass burning, coal burning, and heavy fuel oil combustion sources were associated with cancer, inflammation, and cardiovascular diseases, whereas there were no pathways associated with all traffic. Conclusions Our findings showed that the effects of PM2.5 on DNAm varied by its PMCs and sources.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a disease of women of reproductive age. Up to a certain time, pregnancy was contraindicated in patients with SLE, improving the management of the disease itself (monitoring), as well as understanding the safety of drugs make pregnancy possible for most patients with SLE. Careful pregnancy planning is crucial when the disease is well controlled with pregnancy-compatible medications. This is also facilitated by the management of patients jointly by doctors of different specialties (rheumatologist, neurologist, endocrinologist, etc.) with obstetricians. The article discusses the achievements of managing women with SLE during pregnancy planning, during pregnancy and after delivery.

Abstract

The object of the research is the behavior of axial compressed piles in the foundations on continuous permafrost soils under global warming. There is a degradation of permafrost soils at present. The permafrost layer is vertically divided into two parts: 1) the top, the active layer; 2) the bottom, the frozen mass. The active layer of soil thaws in summer and freezes in winter. Frozen soil behaves as a rock in winter and as a liquid mass on some soil thickness in summer. Accordingly, the surface forces acting on the pile surface in winter time disappear in the entire melted liquid soil layer in summer time. We considered the design of a pile by the condition of the first kind buckling (form) under axial compression. We took into account the conditions when the depth of the base thawing soil increases in the upper part of the pile at the stages of operation (in the summertime of the pile operation). In addition, we considered the calculation of the pile length under the same conditions at a given load on the pile at the stage of its design. To forecast the piles operating time in pile foundations or individual piles during global warming on the Earth, an algorithm for calculating pile length at the design stage is proposed. The paper provides a numerical example of calculating the pile operational life in the solid frozen soil of the foundation in an oil pipeline support.

199. BioCARS: Synchrotron facility for probing structural dynamics of biological macromolecules

Abstract

A major goal in biomedical science is to move beyond static images of proteins and other biological macromolecules to the internal dynamics underlying their function. This level of study is necessary to understand how these molecules work and to engineer new functions and modulators of function. Stemming from a visionary commitment to this problem by Keith Moffat decades ago, a community of structural biologists has now enabled a set of x-ray scattering technologies for observing intramolecular dynamics in biological macromolecules at atomic resolution and over the broad range of timescales over which motions are functionally relevant. Many of these techniques are provided by BioCARS, a cutting-edge synchrotron radiation facility built under Moffat leadership and located at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. BioCARS enables experimental studies of molecular dynamics with time resolutions spanning from 100 ps to seconds and provides both time-resolved x-ray crystallography and small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering. Structural changes can be initiated by several methods—UV/Vis pumping with tunable picosecond and nanosecond laser pulses, substrate diffusion, and global perturbations, such as electric field and temperature jumps. Studies of dynamics typically involve subtle perturbations to molecular structures, requiring specialized computational techniques for data processing and interpretation. In this review, we present the challenges in experimental macromolecular dynamics and describe the current state of experimental capabilities at this facility. As Moffat imagined years ago, BioCARS is now positioned to catalyze the scientific community to make fundamental advances in understanding proteins and other complex biological macromolecules.

Abstract

We study the resonant sequential two-photon ionization of neutral atoms by a combination of twisted- and plane-wave light within a fully relativistic framework. In particular, the ionization of an isotropic ensemble of neutral sodium atoms ($Z = 11$) from their ground $3^{2}S_{1/2}$ state via the $3^{2}P_{3/2}$ level is considered. We investigate in details the influence of the kinematic parameters of incoming twisted radiation on the photoelectron angular distribution and the circular dichroism. Moreover we study the influence of the geometry of the process on these quantities. This is performed by changing the propagation directions of the incoming twisted and plane-wave light. It is found that the dependence on the kinematic parameters of the twisted photon is the strongest if the plane-wave and twisted light beams are perpendicular to each other.
