Search

Observations of the globular clusters NGC 6388 and M 15 were carried out by the H.E.S.S. array of Cherenkov telescopes for a live time of 27.2 and 15.2 hours respectively. No gamma-ray signal is found at the nominal target position of NGC 6388 and M 15. In the primordial formation scenario, globular clusters are formed in a dark matter halo and dark matter could still be present in the baryon-dominated environment of globular clusters. This opens the possibility of observing a dark matter self-annihilation signal. The dark matter content of the globular clusters NGC 6388 and M 15 is modelled taking into account the astrophysical processes that can be expected to influence the dark matter distribution during the evolution of the globular cluster: the adiabatic contraction of dark matter by baryons, the adiabatic growth of a black hole in the dark matter halo and the kinetic heating of dark matter by stars. 95% confidence level exclusion limits on the dark matter particle velocity-weighted annihilation cross section are derived for these dark matter haloes. In the TeV range, the limits on the velocity-weighted annihilation cross section are derived at the 10-25 cm3 s-1 level and a few 10-24 cm3 s-1 for NGC 6388 and M 15 respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

A search for a very-high-energy (VHE; >= 100 GeV) gamma-ray signal from self-annihilating particle Dark Matter (DM) is performed towards a region of projected distance r ~ 45-150 pc from the Galactic Center. The background-subtracted gamma-ray spectrum measured with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) gamma-ray instrument in the energy range between 300 GeV and 30 TeV shows no hint of a residual gamma-ray flux. Assuming conventional Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) and Einasto density profiles, limits are derived on the velocity-weighted annihilation cross section < \sigma v> as a function of the DM particle mass. These are among the best reported so far for this energy range. In particular, for the DM particle mass of ~1 TeV, values for <\sigma v> above 3 * 10^(-25) cm^3 s^(-1) are excluded for the Einasto density profile. The limits derived here differ much less for the chosen density profile parametrizations, as opposed to limits from gamma-ray observations of dwarf galaxies or the very center of the Milky Way, where the discrepancy is significantly larger., Comment: 6 Pages, accepted for publication in Phys. We report on a newly detected point-like source, HESS J1943+213 located in the Galactic plane. This source coincides with an unidentified hard X-ray source IGR J19443+2117, which was proposed to have radio and infrared counterparts. HESS J1943+213 is detected at the significance level of 7.9 \sigma (post-trials) at RA(J2000)=19h 43m 55s +- 1s (stat) +- 1s (sys), DEC(J2000) = +21deg 18' 8" +- 17" (stat) +- 20" (sys). The source has a soft spectrum with photon index Gamma = 3.1 +- 0.3 (stat) +- 0.2 (sys) and a flux above 470 GeV of 1.3 +- 0.2 (stat) +- 0.3 (sys) x 10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. There is no Fermi/LAT counterpart down to a flux limit of 6 x 10^{-9} cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the 0.1-100 GeV energy range (95% confidence upper limit calculated for an assumed power-law model with a photon index Gamma=2.0). The data from radio to VHE gamma-rays do not show any significant variability. We combine new H.E.S.S., Fermi/LAT and Nancay Radio Telescope observations with pre-existing non-simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of IGR J19443+2117 and discuss the likely source associations as well as the interpretation as an active galactic nucleus, a gamma-ray binary or a pulsar wind nebula. The lack of a massive stellar counterpart disfavors the binary hypothesis, while the soft VHE spectrum would be very unusual in case of a pulsar wind nebula. In addition, the distance estimates for Galactic counterparts places them outside of the Milky Way. All available observations favor an interpretation as an extreme, high-frequency peaked BL Lac object with a redshift z>0.14. This would be the first time a blazar is detected serendipitously from ground-based VHE observations, and the first VHE AGN detected in the Galactic Plane., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, in press at A&A

The gamma-ray pulsar PSR B1706-44 and the adjacent supernova remnant (SNR) candidate G343.1-2.3 were observed by H.E.S.S. during a dedicated observation campaign in 2007. As a result of this observation campaign, a new source of very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission, HESS J1708-443, was detected with a statistical significance of 7 sigma, although no significant point-like emission was detected at the position of the energetic pulsar itself. In this paper, the morphological and spectral analyses of the newly-discovered TeV source are presented. The centroid of HESS J1708-443 is considerably offset from the pulsar and located near the apparent center of the SNR, at RA(J2000) = 17h08m11s +/- 17s and Dec(J2000) = -44d20' +/- 4'. The source is found to be significantly more extended than the H.E.S.S. point spread function (~0.1 deg), with an intrinsic Gaussian width of 0.29 deg +/- 0.04 deg. Its integral flux between 1 and 10 TeV is ~ 3.8 x 10^-12 ph cm^-2 s^-1, equivalent to 17% of the Crab Nebula flux in the same energy range. The measured energy spectrum is well-fit by a power law with a relatively hard photon index Gamma = 2.0 +/- 0.1 (stat) +/- 0.2 (sys). Several models of Quantum Gravity predict Lorentz Symmetry breaking at energy scales approaching the Planck scale (10^{19} GeV). With present photon data from the observations of distant astrophysical sources, it is possible to constrain the Lorentz Symmetry breaking linear term in the standard photon dispersion relations. Gamma-ray Bursts (GRB) and flaring Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are complementary to each other for this purpose, since they are observed at different distances in different energy ranges and with different levels of variability. Following a previous publication of the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) collaboration, a more sensitive event-by-event method consisting of a likelihood fit is applied to PKS 2155-304 flare data of MJD 53944 (July 28, 2006) as used in the previous publication. The previous limit on the linear term is improved by a factor of ~3 up to M^{l}_{QG} > 2.1x10^{18} GeV and is currently the best result obtained with blazars. The sensitivity to the quadratic term is lower and provides a limit of M^{q}_{QG} > 6.4x10^10 GeV, which is the best value obtained so far with an AGN and similar to the best limits obtained with GRB., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures. The Sculptor and Carina Dwarf spheroidal galaxies were observed with the H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescope array between January 2008 and December 2009. The data sets consist of a total of 11.8 and 14.8 hours of high quality data, respectively. No gamma-ray signal was detected at the nominal positions of these galaxies above 220 GeV and 320 GeV, respectively. Upper limits on the gamma-ray fluxes at 95% C.L. assuming two forms for the spectral energy distribution (a power law shape and one derived from dark matter annihilation) are obtained at the level of 10^-13 to 10^-12 cm^-2s^-1 in the TeV range. Constraints on the velocity weighted dark matter particle annihilation cross section for both Sculptor and Carina dwarf galaxies range from <\sigma v> ~ 10^-21 cm^3s^-1 down to <\sigma v> ~ 10^-22 cm^3s^-1 depending on the dark matter halo model used. Possible enhancements of the gamma-ray flux are studied: the Sommerfeld effect, which is found to exclude some dark matter particle masses, the internal Bremsstrahlung and clumps in the dark-matter halo distributions., Comment: Accepted for publication on Astroparticle Physics, 25 pages, 12 figures

Context: The detection of gamma-rays in the very-high-energy (VHE) range (100 GeV-100 TeV) offers the possibility of studying the parent population of ultrarelativistic particles found in astrophysical sources, so it is useful for understanding the underlying astrophysical processes in nonthermal sources. Aim: The discovery of the VHE gamma-ray source HESS J1507-622 is reported and possibilities regarding its nature are investigated. Methods: The H.E.S.S. array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) has a high sensitivity compared with previous instruments (~1% of the Crab flux in 25 hours observation time for a 5 sigma point-source detection) and has a large field of view (~5 deg in diameter). HESS J1507-622 was discovered within the ongoing H.E.S.S. survey of the inner Galaxy, and the source was also studied by means of dedicated multiwavelength observations. Results: A Galactic gamma-ray source, HESS J1507-622, located ~3.5 deg from the Galactic plane was detected with a statistical significance > 9 sigma. Its energy spectrum is well fitted by a power law with spectral index \Gamma = 2.24 +/- 0.16_{stat} +/- 0.20_{sys} and a flux above 1 TeV of (1.5 +/- 0.4_{stat} +/- 0.3_{sys}) X 10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. Possible interpretations (considering both hadronic and leptonic models) of the VHE gamma-ray emission are discussed in the absence of an obvious counterpart., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

PKS 0548-322 (z=0.069) is a ``high-frequency-peaked'' BL Lac object and a candidate very high energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emitter, due to its high X-ray and radio flux. Observations at the VHE band provide insights into the origin of very energetic particles present in this source and the radiation processes at work. We report observations made between October 2004 and January 2008 with the H.E.S.S. array, a four imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes. Contemporaneous UV and X-ray observations with the Swift satellite in November 2006 are also reported. PKS 0548-322 is detected for the first time in the VHE band with H.E.S.S. We measure an excess of 216 gamma-rays corresponding to a significance of 5.6 standard deviations. The photon spectrum of the source is described by a power-law, with a photon index of Gamma=2.86 +/- 0.34 (stat) +/- 0.10 (sys). The integral flux above 200 GeV is 1.3 % of the flux of the Crab Nebula, and is consistent with being constant in time. Contemporaneous Swift/XRT observations reveal an X-ray flux between 2 and 10 keV of F_{2-10 keV}=2.3 +/- 0.2 x 10^{-11} erg.cm^{-2}. s^{-1}, an intermediate intensity state with respect to previous observations. Observations of very high energy gamma-rays from blazars provide information about acceleration mechanisms occurring in their innermost regions. Studies of variability in these objects allow a better understanding of the mechanisms at play. To investigate the spectral and temporal variability of VHE (>100 GeV) gamma-rays of the well-known high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 with the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes over a wide range of flux states. Data collected from 2005 to 2007 are analyzed. Spectra are derived on time scales ranging from 3 years to 4 minutes. Light curve variability is studied through doubling timescales and structure functions, and is compared with red noise process simulations. The source is found to be in a low state from 2005 to 2007, except for a set of exceptional flares which occurred in July 2006. The quiescent state of the source is characterized by an associated mean flux level of 4.32 +/-0.09 x 10^-11 cm^-2 s^-1 above 200 GeV, or approximately 15% of the Crab Nebula, and a power law photon index of 3.53 +/-0.06. During the flares of July 2006, doubling timescales of ~2 min are found. The spectral index variation is examined over two orders of magnitude in flux, yielding different behaviour at low and high fluxes,which is a new phenomenon in VHE gamma-ray emitting blazars. The variability amplitude characterized by the fractional r.m.s. is strongly energy-dependent and is proportional to E^(0.19 +/- 0.01). The light curve r.m.s. correlates with the flux. This is the signature of a multiplicative process which can be accounted for as a red noise with a Fourier index of ~2. This unique data set shows evidence for a low level gamma-ray emission state from PKS 2155-304, which possibly has a different origin than the outbursts. AIMS: The properties of the broad-band emission from the high-frequency peaked BL Lac H 2356-309 (z=0.165) are investigated. METHODS: Very High Energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) observations of H 2356-309 were performed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) from 2004 through 2007. Simultaneous optical/UV and X-ray observations were made with the XMM-Newton satellite on June 12/13 and June 14/15, 2005. NRT radio observations were also contemporaneously performed in 2005. ATOM optical monitoring observations were also made in 2007. RESULTS: A strong VHE signal, ~13 sigma total, was detected by HESS after the four years HESS observations (116.8 hrs live time). The integral flux above 240 GeV is I(>240 GeV) = (3.06 +- 0.26 {stat} +- 0.61 {syst}) x 10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1}, corresponding to ~1.6% of the flux observed from the Crab Nebula. A time-averaged energy spectrum is measured from 200 GeV to 2 TeV and is characterized by a power law (photon index of Gamma = 3.06 +- 0.15 {stat} +- 0.10 {syst}). Significant small-amplitude variations in the VHE flux from H 2356-309 are seen on time scales of months and years, but not on shorter time scales. No evidence for any variations in the VHE spectral slope are found within these data. The XMM-Newton X-ray measurements show a historically low X-ray state, characterized by a hard, broken-power-law spectrum on both nights. CONCLUSIONS: The broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED) of the blazar can be adequately fit using a simple one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. We calculate optically thick but geometrically thin (and slim) accretion disk models and perform a ray-tracing of photons (in the Kerr geometry) to calculate the observed disk spectra. Previously, it was a common practice to ray-trace photons assuming that they are emitted from the Kerr geometry equatorial plane, z = 0. We show that the spectra calculated with this assumption differ from these calculated under the assumption that photons are emitted from the actual surface of the disc, z = H(r). This implies that a knowledge of the location of the thin disks effective photosphere is relevant for calculating the spectra. In this paper we investigate, in terms of a simple toy model, a possible influence of the (unknown, and therefore ad hoc assumed) vertical dissipation profiles on the vertical structure of the disk and thus on the location of the effective photosphere, and on the observed spectra. For disks with moderate and high mass accretion rates (\dot m>0.01\dot m_C) we find that the photosphere location in the inner, radiation pressure dominated, disk region (where most of the radiation comes from) does not depend on the dissipation profile and therefore emerging disk spectra are insensitive to the choice of the dissipation function. For lower accretion rates the photosphere location depends on the assumed vertical dissipation profile down to the disk inner edge, but the dependence is very weak and thus of minor importance. We conclude that the spectra of optically thick accretion disks around black holes should be calculated with the ray-tracing from the effective photosphere and that, fortunately, the choice of a particular vertical dissipation profile does not substantially influence the calculated spectrum., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

We explore some properties of twin kilohertz quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) in a simple toy-model consisting of two oscillation modes coupled by a general nonlinear force. We examine resonant effects by slowly varying the values of the tunable, and nearly commensurable, eigenfrequencies. The behavior of the actual oscillation frequencies and amplitudes during a slow transition through the 3:2 resonance is examined in detail and it is shown that both are significantly affected by the nonlinearities in the governing equations. In particular, the amplitudes of oscillations reflect a resonant exchange of energy between the modes, as a result the initially weaker mode may become dominant after the transition. We note that a qualitatively similar behavior has been recently reported in several neutron star sources by Torok (2008, arXiv:0812.4751), who found that the difference of amplitudes in neutron star twin peak QPOs changes sign as the observed frequency ratio of the QPOs passes through the value 3:2., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted by A&A

We compute the properties of a geometrically thin, steady accretion disk surrounding a central rotating, magnetized star. The magnetosphere is assumed to entrain the disk over a wide range of radii. The model is simplified in that we adopt two (alternate) ad hoc, but plausible, expressions for the azimuthal component of the magnetic field as a function of radial distance. We find a solution for the angular velocity profile tending to corotation close to the central star, and smoothly matching a Keplerian curve at a radius where the viscous stress vanishes. The value of this ''transition'' radius is nearly the same for both of our adopted B-field models. We then solve analytically for the torques on the central star and for the disk luminosity due to gravity and magnetic torques. When expressed in a dimensionless form, the resulting quantities depend on one parameter alone, the ratio of the transition radius to the corotation radius. For rapid rotators, the accretion disk may be powered mostly by spin-down of the central star. These results are independent of the viscosity prescription in the disk. We also solve for the disk structure for the special case of an optically thick alpha disk. Double peak kHz QPO frequencies in neutron star sources varies in time by a factor of hundreds Hz while in microquasar sources the frequencies are fixed and located at the line \nu_2 = 1.5 \nu_1 in the frequency-frequency plot. The crucial question in the theory of twin HFQPOs is whether or not those observed in neutron-star systems are essentially different from those observed in black holes. In black hole systems the twin HFQPOs are known to be in a 3:2 ratio for each source. At first sight, this seems not to be the case for neutron stars. For each individual neutron star, the upper and lower kHz QPO frequencies, \nu_2 and \nu_1, are linearly correlated, \nu_2=A \nu_1 + B, with the slope A < 1.5, i.e., the frequencies definitely are not in a 1.5 ratio. In this contribution we show that when considered jointly on a frequency-frequency plot, the data for the twin kHz QPO frequencies in several (as opposed to one) neutron stars uniquely pick out a certain preferred frequency ratio that is equal to 1.5 for the six sources examined so far., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, Astronomische Nachrichten, in press

We have carried out a systematic study of the properties of the kilo-Hertz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) observed in the X-ray emission of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U1608-52, using archival data obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. We have investigated the quality factor, Q, of the oscillations (defined as the ratio of the frequency of the QPO peak to its full width at half maximum). In order to minimise the effect of long-term frequency drifts, power spectra were computed over the shortest times permitted by the data statistics. We show that the high Q of ~200 reported by Berger et al. (1996) for the lower frequency kilo-Hz QPO in one of their observations is by no means exceptional, as we observe a mean Q value in excess of 150 in 14 out of the 21 observations analysed and Q can remain above 200 for thousands of seconds. The frequency of the QPO varies over the wide range 560--890 Hz and we find a systematic trend for the coherence time of the QPO, estimated as tau=Q /(pi nu), to increase with the frequency, up to a maximum level at ~ 800 Hz, beyond which it appears to decrease, at frequencies where the QPO weakens. There is a more complex relationship between tau and the QPO root mean squared amplitude (RMS), in which positive and negative correlations can be found. A higher-frequency QPO, revealed by correcting for the frequency drift of the 560-890 Hz one, has a much lower Q (~10) which does not follow the same pattern. We present and discuss a short and simple derivation of orbital epicyclic frequencies for circular geodesic orbits in stationary and axially symmetric spacetimes. Such spacetimes include as special cases analytically known black hole Kerr and Schwarzschild spacetimes, as well as the analytic Hartle-Thorne spacetime and all numerically constructed spacetimes relevant for rotating neutron stars. Our derivation follows directly from energy and angular momentum conservation and it uses the concept of the effective potential. The origin of quasi periodic modulations of flux in the kilohertz range (kHz QPOs), observed in low-mass X-ray binaries, is usually assumed to be physically distinct from that of the ``normal branch oscillations'' (NBOs) in the Z-sources. We show that a low-frequency modulation of the kHz QPOs is a natural consequence of the non-linear relativistic resonance suggested previously to explain the properties of the high-frequency twin peaks. The theoretical results discussed here are reminiscent of the 6 Hz variations of frequency and amplitude of the kHz QPOs reported by Yu, van der Klis and Jonker (2001)., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ; 4 pages, 1 figure

We show that a luminous torus in the Schwarzschild metric oscillating along its own axis gives rise to a periodically varying flux of radiation, even though the source of radiation is steady and perfectly axisymmetric. This implies that the simplest oscillation mode in an accretion flow, axisymmetric up-and-down motion at the meridional epicyclic frequency, may be directly observable when it occurs in the inner parts of accretion flow around neutron stars and black holes. The high-frequency modulations of the X-ray flux observed in low-mass X-ray binaries at two frequencies (twin kHz QPOs) could then be a signature of strong gravity both because radial and meridional oscillations have different frequencies in non-Newtonian gravity, and because strong gravitational deflection of light rays causes the flux of radiation to be modulated at the higher frequency., Comment: 8 p., 4 figs

The Hartle-Thorne metric is an exact solution of vacuum Einstein field equations that describes the exterior of any slowly and rigidly rotating, stationary and axially symmetric body. The metric is given with accuracy up to the second order terms in the body's angular momentum, and first order in its quadrupole moment. We give, with the same accuracy, analytic formulae for circular geodesics in the Hartle-Thorne metrics. They describe angular velocity, angular momentum, energy, epicyclic frequencies, shear, vorticity and Fermi-Walker precession. These quantities are relevant to several astrophysical phenomena, in particular to the observed high frequency, kilohertz Quasi Periodic Oscillations (kHz QPOs) in the X-ray luminosity from black hole and neutron star sources. It is believed that kHz QPO data may be used to test the strong field regime of Einstein's general relativity, and the physics of super-dense matter of which neutron stars are made of., Comment: 9 pages

Millisecond variability detected in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) probably reflects motions of accreting fluid in the strong-field gravity of neutron stars or neutron stars. Parametric resonance between two oscillators with unequal eigenfrequencies provides a natural explanation for the 2:3 frequency ratio observed in some black-hole systems, and probably also in the brightest neutron stars. We have explored the ideas that parametric resonance affects nearly geodesic motion around a black hole or a neutron star, and that it may be relevant to the high frequency (twin) quasi-periodic oscillations occurring in some low-mass X-ray binaries. We have assumed the particles or fluid elements of an accretion disc to be subject to an isotropic perturbation of a hypothetical but rather general form. We find that the parametric resonance is indeed excited close to the radius where epicyclic frequencies of radial and meridional oscillations are in a 2:3 ratio. The location and frequencies of the highest amplitude excitation vary with the strength of the perturbation. These results agree with actual frequency ratios of twin kHz QPOs that have been reported in some black hole candidates, and they may be consistent also with correlation of the twin peaks in Sco X-1., Comment: 5 pages; accepted for publication in PASJ

We find evidence that the two high frequency QPOs in Sco X-1 are, more often than not, approximately in the 2:3 frequency ratio familiar from studies of black hole candidates (e.g., XTE J1550-564, Remillard et al. 2002). This implies that the double kHz QPO phenomenon in neutron stars has its origin in properties of strong-field gravity and has little to do with the rotation of a stellar surface or any magnetic field structure anchored in the star., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The X-ray emission of RXJ1856.5-3754 has been found to coincide to unprecedented accuracy with that of a blackbody, of radius 5.8+-0.9 km for the measured parallax distance of 140 pc (Burwitz et al. 2001, Drake et al. 2002). If the emission is uniform over the whole surface of a non-rotating star, the mass of the star cannot exceed 0.75+-0.12 solar mass regardless of its composition. If the compact object is a quark star described by the MIT-bag equation of state (a ``strange star''), the mass is no more than 0.3 solar mass. The spin-up of a neutron star crucially depends on the maximum orbital frequency around it, as do a host of other high energy accretion phenomena in low mass X-ray binaries, including quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray flux. We compare the maximum orbital frequencies for MIT-bag quark stars and for neutron stars modeled with the FPS equation of state. The results are based on relativistic calculations of constant baryon sequences of uniformly rotating strange star models, and are presented as a function of the stellar rotational frequency. The marginally stable orbit is present outside quark stars for a wide range of parameters, but outside the neutron stars it is present only for the highest values of mass. Non-linear acoustic coupling of modes in accretion disks allows a parametric resonance between epicyclic motions. In black hole disks, such a resonance first occurs, and is strongest, when the radial and vertical epicyclic frequencies are approximately in a 2:3 ratio, in agreement with the 300 and 450 Hz frequencies reported in GRO J1655-40 and the 184 and 276 Hz frequencies reported in XTE J1550-564. The first overtone in the same resonance is in a 5:3 ratio with the fundamental, in agreement with the 69.2 and 41.5 Hz frequencies reported in GRS 1915+105. Observations of kHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray fluxes of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) have been used in attempts to constrain the external metric of the compact members of these binaries, as well as their masses and the equation of state of matter at supranuclear denisties. We compute the maximum orbital frequency of stable circular motion around uniformly rotating strange stars described by the MIT bag model. The calculations are performed for both normal and supramassive constant baryon mass sequences of strange stars rotating at all possible rates. We find the lower limits on the maximum orbital frequency and discuss them for a range of masses and for all rotational frequencies allowed in the model considered. We show that for slowly and moderately rotating strange stars the maximum value of orbital frequency can be a good indicator of the mass of the compact object. However, for rapidly rotating strange stars the same value of orbital frequency in the innermost stable circular orbit is obtained for stars with masses ranging from that of a planetoid to about three solar masses. At sufficiently high rotation rates of the strange star, the rotational period alone constrains the stellar mass to a surprisingly narrow range., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted by A&A

Heyl (2000) made an interesting suggestion that the observed shifts in QPO frequency in type I X-ray bursts could be influenced by the same geometrical effect of strong gravity as the one that causes centrifugal force reversal discovered by Abramowicz and Lasota (1974). However, his main result contains a sign error. Here we derive the correct formula and conclude that constraints on the M(R) relation for neutron stars deduced from the rotational-modulation model of QPO frequency shifts are of no practical interest because the correct formula implies a weak condition R* > 1.3 Rs, where Rs is the Schwarzschild radius. We show that in the limit of low masses (M<0.1M solar), the orbital and rotational frequencies in exact relativistic numerical models of rotating, axially symmetric, quark stars coincide with those for Maclaurin spheroids. In particular, when the eccentricity of the spheroid exceeds a critical value (e>0.83458318), circular orbits in the equatorial plane are unstable for a range of orbital radii outside the stellar surface. The orbital frequency in the marginally stable orbit, and all other orbits, around Maclaurin spheroids goes to zero in the limit e=1. It has been suggested that observations of quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray fluxes from low mass X-ray binaries can be used to constrain the mass of the compact object and the equation of state of its matter. A specific suggestion that the kHz QPO frequency saturates at the maximum orbital frequency has been widely considered. We examine rotating compact stars described by a new model of strange quark matter (Dey et al. 1998). We calculate the maximum orbital frequencies for both normal and supramassive strange stars described by the Dey model, and present these frequencies for sequences of equilibrium models with constant baryon mass. An analytic solution is presented to the three-dimensional problem of steady axisymmetric fluid flow through an accretion disk. The solution has been obtained through a systematic expansion in the small parameter epsilon =H/R (the ratio of disk thickness to its radial dimension) of the equations of viscous hydrodynamics. The equation of state was assumed to be polytropic. For all values alpha< 0.685 of the viscosity parameter, we find significant backflow in the midplane of the disk occuring at all radii larger than a certain value; however, in the inner regions of the disk the fluid always flows toward the accreting object. The region of backflow is separated from the region of inflow by a surface flaring outwards from a circular locus of stagnation points situated in the midplane of the disk., Comment: 39 pages (incl. fig. captions), 11 figs. We compute the maximum mass of moderately rotating strange stars as a function of the strange quark mass, of the QCD coupling constant, $\alpha_c$, and of the bag constant (vacuum energy density), $B$, in the MIT bag model of quark matter with lowest order quark-gluon interactions. For a fixed value of $B$, the maximum stellar mass depends only weakly on $\alpha_c$, and is independent of this coupling in the limit of massless quarks. However, if it is the value of the chemical potential of quark matter at zero pressure which is held constant, for example at the value corresponding to the stability limit of nucleons against conversion to quark matter, the maximum mass of the strange star is higher by up to 25% for $\alpha_c=0.6$, than for non-interacting quarks, and this may be relevant in the discussion of kHz QPO sources. The maximum mass of a non-rotating strange star could be sufficiently high to allow an orbital frequency as low as 1.0 kHz in the marginally stable orbit. However, for all $\alpha_c<0.6$, the stellar mass cannot exceed $2.6M_\odot$ at any rotational period $\ge1.6 $ms., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, A&A in press

One of a family previously proposed ``central engines'' for cosmic gamma-ray burst sources (Klu\'zniak & Ruderman 1998) is considered in some detail. A steadily accreting $10^6$ Gauss magnetic white dwarf should ultimately collapse to a strongly differentially rotating, millisecond-rotation-period neutron star for a wide range of steady accretion rates and initial masses if the accreting white dwarf has an evolved O-Ne-Mg composition. A similar neutron star could also result from an initial C-O white dwarf but only for more constrained accretion rates. Because the collapsing white dwarf begins as a $\gamma=4/3$ polytrope, the final neutron star's spin-rate increases strongly with cylindrical radius. A stable wind-up of the neutron star's poloidal magnetic field then produces buoyant magnetic toroids which grow, break loose, rise, and partly penetrate the neutron star surface to form a transient, $B\approx 10^{17}$ G millisecond spin-period pulsar with a powerful pulsar wind (Usov 1992). This pulsar wind emission is then rapidly suppressed by the surface shear motion from the strong stellar differential rotation. This wind-up and transient pulsar formation can occur at other times on different cylinders and/or repeat on the same one, with (re-)wind up and surface penetration time scales hugely longer han the neutron star's millisecond spin period. In this way, differential rotation both opens and closes the doors which allow neutron star spin-energy to be emitted in powerful bursts of pulsar wind. It has been suggested that the frequency in the co-rotating innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) about a compact stellar remnant can be determined through X-ray observations of low-mass X-ray binaries, and that its value can be used to constrain the equation of state of ultradense matter. Upon constructing numerical models of rapidly rotating strange (quark) stars in general relativity, we find that for stars rotating at the equatorial mass-shedding limit, the ISCO is indeed above the stellar surface, for a wide range of central energy densities at a height equal to 11% of the circumferential stellar radius, which scales inversely with the square root of the energy density, of self-bound quark matter at zero presure. In contrast to static stars, the ISCO frequencies of rapidly rotating strange stars can be as low as 0.9 kHz for a 1.3 solar mass strange star. Hence, the presence of strange stars in low-mass X-ray binaries cannot be excluded on the basis of the currently observed frequencies of kHz QPOs, such as the cut-off frequency of 1066 Hz in 4U 1820-30., Comment: 5 pg., 4 figs

If Lorentz invariance is broken at an energy scale Eq, as has recently been suggested in the context of attempts to quantize gravity, the kinematics of photon-photon collisions would be profoundly affected at lower energies. Specifically, electron-positron pair creation on soft photons may be forbidden at photon energies as low as 30 TeV times square root of (Eq/10**17 GeV) and the Universe would then be transparent to high energy photons. If the ordinary neutrinos oscillate into a sterile flavor in a manner consistent with the Super-Kamiokande data on the zenith-angle dependence of atmospheric mu-neutrino flux, an energy sufficient to power a typical cosmic gamma-ray burst (GRB) (about 10^{52} erg) can be carried by sterile neutrinos away from the source and deposited in a region relatively free of baryons. Hence, ultra-relativistic bulk motion (required by the theory of and observations of GRBs and their afterglows) can easily be achieved in the vicinity of plausible sources of GRBs. Oscillations between sterile and ordinary neutrinos would thus provide a solution to the ``baryon-loading problem'' in the theory of GRBs.

GRBs are thought to arise in relativistic blast-wave shocks at distances of 10 to 1000 AU from the point where the explosive energy is initially released. To account for the observed duration and variability of the gamma-ray emission in most GRBs, a central engine powering the shocks must remain active for several seconds to many minutes but must strongly fluctuate in its output on much shorter timescales. We show how a neutron star differentially rotating at millisecond periods (DROMP) could be such an engine. A magnetized DROMP would repeatedly wind up toroidal magnetic fields to about 10**17 G and only release the corresponding magnetic energy, when each buoyant magnetic field torus floats up to, and breaks through, the stellar surface. The resulting rapid sub-bursts, separated by relatively quiescent phases, repeat until the kinetic energy of differential rotation is exhausted by these events. Calculated values of the energy released and of the various timescales are in agreement with observations of GRBs. The baryon loading in each sub-burst may also be consistent with theoretical requirements for a blast wave capable of giving the X-ray, optical and radio afterglows recently observed from cosmological distances. DROMPs could be created in several kinds of astrophysical events; some of these would be expected to occur at about the observed GRB rate. The requisite differential rotation could be imparted to neutron stars as they are born or at the end of their existence: some DROMPs may be created close to star forming regions while others may arise far from galaxies., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

If the observed millisecond variability in the X-ray flux of several neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) is interpreted within a general-relativistic framework (Kluzniak, Michelson \& Wagoner 1990) extant at the time of discovery, severe constraints can be placed on the equation of state (e.o.s.) of matter at supranuclear densities. The reported maximum frequency (1.14 +- 0.01 kHz) of quasiperiodic oscillations observed in sources as diverse as Sco X-1 and 4U 1728-34 would imply that the neutron star masses in these LMXBs are M > 1.9 M_solar, and hence many equations of state would be excluded. Among the very few still viable equations of state are the e.o.s. of Phandaripande and Smith (1975), and e.o.s. We present the results of Newtonian hydrodynamic simulations of the coalescence of a binary consisting of a black hole with a neutron star. The calculations show that for a wide range of initial conditions the core of the neutron star survives the initial mass transfer episode. We therefore identify black hole-neutron star binaries as the astrophysical production site of low mass neutron stars unstable to explosion. We present the results of hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations showing the coalescence of a black hole with a neutron star to be a promising theoretical source of short duration gamma-ray bursts. The favorable features of the process include rapid onset, millisecond variability, a duration much longer than the dynamical timescale, and a range of outcomes sufficient to allow variety in the properties of individual gamma-ray bursts. Angular momentum loss via the emission of gravitational waves must eventually drive compact binaries containing black holes and/or neutron stars to coalesce. The resulting events are primary candidate sources for detectors such as VIRGO and LIGO. We present calculations of gravitational radiation waveforms and luminosities for the coalescence of a black hole-neutron star binary, performed in the quadrupole approximation using a Newtonian smooth particle hydrodynamics code.
