Erstmals werden video-endoskopische Techniken auch im Bereich der arteriellen Rekonstruktion dargestellt und Anleitungen zu ihrer Durchführung gegeben. Der Einsatz minimalinvasiver Techniken auch im Bereich der Venenchirurgie stellt einen weiteren Schwerpunkt dar. Der Leser findet neben einer Beschreibung der verschiedenen Operationsverfahren eine Vielzahl von Abbildungen und Zeichnungen, die es ihm ermöglichen sollen, die verschiedenen Techniken in der klinischen Praxis umzusetzen.

Zu Beginn des Jahres 2001 erschien der dritte nationale Altenbericht mit dem Titel,,Alter und Gesellschaft', der im Auftrag der Bundesregierung von einer unabhängigen Sachverständigenkommission erstellt wurde. Dieser Bericht enthält eine allgemeine Bestandsaufnahme der Lebenssituation älterer Men­ schen, betont die Bedeutung individueller und gesellschaftlicher Ressourcen für ein selbstständiges, aktives und produktives Leben im Alter und gibt Handlungsempfehlungen für Politikfelder, die für die Lebenssituation älterer Menschen besonders bedeutsam sind. Der von der Bundesregierung dem Bundestag übergebene Bericht kann beim Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend bezogen werden. Zur Unterstützung ihrer Arbeit hat die Sachverständigenkommission schriftliche Expertisen von ausgewiesenen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissen­ schaftlern eingeholt, in denen einzelne Themenbereiche und Fragestellungen vertieft bearbeitet wurden. Da in den Altenbericht zwangsläufig nur Teilas­ pekte der in den Expertisen enthaltenen Informationen, Erkenntnisse und Überlegungen aufgenommen werden konnten, hat die Sachverständigenkom­ mission beschlossen, die Expertisen zu publizieren und damit einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Die Arbeiten zielen überwiegend dar­ auf ab, einen fundierten Überblick über den Erkenntnisstand zu den behan­ delten Themen und den von der Kommission vorgegebenen Fragestellungen zu geben. Oft werden dabei auch Ergebnisse eigener empirischer Forschun­ gen herangezogen, die zum Teil eigens für die Sachverständigenkommission durchgeführt wurden.

Body temperature regulation refers to processes of heating and cooling that an organism uses to control its temperature. Thermoregulation is the ability of an organism to keep its body temperature within certain boundaries, even when the surrounding temperature is very different. This process is one aspect of homeostasis, a dynamic state of stability between an animal's internal environment and its external environment. The maintenance of body temperature in animals is a result of the process of metabolism, by which foodstuffs are converted into protein, carbohydrates, and fat, with the release of energy in the form of heat. Because active muscles metabolize food faster than muscles at rest, giving off more heat in the process, physical activity increases body temperature. This new book provides a great variety of research on human as well as animal body temperature regulation. The principles of thermodynamics pertinent to the exchange of heat energy between the body and its surrounding environment is reviewed. By the end of British rule in Palestine on 14 May 1948, Palestinian nationality had become well established in accordance with both domestic law and international law. Accordingly, the legal origin of Palestinian nationality lies in this nearly thirty-year period as the status of Palestinians has never been settled since. Hence, any legal consideration on the future status of individuals who once held Palestinian nationality should start from the point at which the British rule over Palestine was terminated. This work provides a legal basis for future settlement of the status of Palestinians of all categories that emerged in some sixty years following the end of the Palestine Mandate: Israeli citizens, inhabitants of the occupied territory, and Palestinian refugees. In conclusion, nationality as regulated by Britain in Palestine represents an international status that cannot be legally altered except in accordance with international law.

Society, Culture and Politics in Byzantium is the fourth selection of papers by the late Nicolas Oikonomides to be published in the Variorum Collected Studies Series. Its focus is upon the Byzantine world after the Fourth Crusade and during the Palaeologan period, though several studies deal with a longer time span. The twenty-eight articles included look first at questions of language and literacy, and then at the relationships between art and politics. The final sections examine aspects of the history of the later empire, in the age of its decline, caught between the economic penetration of the Western European states and the expansion of the Ottoman Turks, and consider the development of Byzantine institutions, monasteries and the Church in this period.
