183. Mechanical Weakness of the Nankai Accretionary Prism: Insights From Vp Measurements of Drill Cuttings.

Abstract

The relationship between P‐wave velocity (Vp) and unconfined compressive strength (C0) can be used to estimate in situ rock strength and stresses at depth in subduction zones. However, few reliable data on the Vp‐C0 relationship in deep accretionary prism sediments are available. Here, we determined the Vp‐C0 relationship down to ∼3.2 km in the Nankai accretionary prism from Vp measurements and indentation tests of drill cuttings retrieved from International Ocean Discovery Program Site C0002. In our results, the Nankai accretionary prism sediments tended to be weaker compared with estimates obtained by using other empirically determined Vp‐C0 relationships. We also examined the relationship between Vp and porosity in the accretionary prism. The Vp‐porosity relationship obtained by using only data of Nankai accretionary prism sediments showed that Vp generally increased with decreasing porosity; this result is consistent with published Vp‐porosity relationships for Nankai Trough sediments. The empirical relationships derived in this study should improve estimates of stress state, pore pressure, and fault strength in the Nankai accretionary prism. Plain Language Summary: Stress conditions in a subduction zone must be known to understand how earthquakes in the zone are generated. To estimate stresses deep underground, the relationship between sonic (P‐) wave velocity and rock strength can be used. We thus measured P‐wave velocity and rock strength of small rocks and sediment chips, called drill cuttings, collected as deep as ∼3.2 km below the seafloor during a scientific ocean drilling project from a geological formation in the Nankai Trough called the Nankai accretionary prism. We then determined the relationship between P‐wave velocity and rock strength in the accretionary prism sediments. We found that the deep Nankai accretionary prism sediments were weaker than had been previously estimated. Our empirically derived relationship should contribute to improved estimation of stresses in the Nankai accretionary prism. Abstract

The effects of the crystal orientation on the surface magnetic flux density and cogging torque are examined for multipole ring magnets. It was noticed that the surface permanent magnet rotors using these ring magnets have a 75% smaller cogging torque with a basic period and the low cogging torque and high surface flux density comes from the high crystal orientation at the pole positions.

Abstract

Collisions between a 'cometlike' body (mixtures of chondritic materials and ice) and a slightly differentiated body were proposed for shock origin of ordinary chondrites. In this model, chondrules were formed with shock melting, and matrices were formed both by fracturing of materials and by recondensation of evaporated materials. This model can explain different redox conditions of chondrite formations by ice evaporation. Although this model was originally proposed for ordinary chondrites, we assume here that the model can be extended to chondrite formation in general. In this paper, redox conditions during chondrite formation by collisions will be discussed in the light of phase diagrams for solid-vapor equilibria.

Abstract

Various observations suggest that the precursor of the fine fragments and the relict pyroxene was formed by an igneous process in a grandparent body of the chondrite. Furthermore, the fact that the precursors appear as fragments in the matrix as well as relicts in the chondrule suggests a shock origin for the chondrite by collision of two or more bodies, which had already to some extent undergone igneous differentiation.

Abstract

One of the keys to understanding the origins of chondrites is given by the characteristics of relict minerals in chondrules that survived chondrule formation. Some of the relic materials show shock deformation textures, such as high dislocation densities in relict olivine and stacking faults in relict pyroxene. The textures suggest that shock deformation was the cause of melting of the chondrules. Some of the olivine and pyroxene fragments in the matrix of the chondrites have been shown to have a composition closer to the relict minerals than minerals crystallized during the chondrule formation. This suggests that some of the fragments originated from the precursor materials of the chondrules. A proposed origin for chondrites is discussed here along with supporting observations and conclusions.
