177. Development of PVDF tactile dynamic sensing in a behaviour-based assembly robot

Abstract

The research presented in this thesis focuses on the development of tactile event signature sensors and their application, especially in reactive behaviour-based robotic assembly systems. In pursuit of practical and economic sensors for detecting part contact, the application of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) film, a mechanical vibration sensitive piezo material, is investigated. A Clunk Sensor is developed which remotely detects impact vibrations, and a Push Sensor is developed which senses small changes in the deformation of a compliant finger surface. The Push Sensor is further developed to provide some force direction and force pattern sensing capability. By being able to detect changes of state in an assembly, such as a change of contact force, an assembly robot can be well informed of current conditions. The complex structure of assembly tasks provides a rich context within which to interpret changes of state, so simple binary sensors can conveniently supply a lot more information than in the domain of mobile robots. Guarded motions, for example, which require sensing a change of state, have long been recognised as very useful in part mating tasks. Guarded motions are particularly well suited to be components of assembly behavioural modules. In behaviour-based robotic assembly systems, the high level planner is endowed with as little complexity as possible while the low level planning execution agent deals with actual sensing and action. Highly reactive execution agents can provide advantages by encapsulating low level sensing and action, hiding the details of sensori-motor complexity from the higher levels. Because behaviour-based assembly systems emphasise the utility of this kind of qualitative state-change sensor (as opposed to sensors which measure physical quantities), the robustness and utility of the Push Sensor was tested in an experimental behaviour-based system. An experimental task of pushing a ring along a convoluted stiff wire is chosen, in which the tactile sensors developed here are aided by vision. Three different methods of combining these different sensors within the general behaviour-based paradigm are implemented and compared. This exercise confirms the robustness and utility of the PVDF-based tactile sensors. We argue that the comparison suggests that for behaviour-based assembly systems using multiple concurrent sensor systems, bottom-level motor control in terms of force or velocity would be more appropriate than positional control. Behaviour-based systems have traditionally tried to avoid symbolic knowledge. Considering this in the light of the above work, it was found useful to develop a taxonomy of type of knowledge and refine the prohibition.

Abstract

A facile reduction and doping process is employed with the supercritical ethanol drying method to form RuNi alloy aerogels. The optimized heterostructure comprising RuNi metal, RuO2, and NiO phases is synthesized through partial oxidation. When applied to the surface of Ni foam, the multiphase aerogels form a morphology of highly porous 0D colloidal aerogel networks on the surface. RuNi alloy–Ni foam oxidized at 350 °C (RuNi-350@NF) has an overpotential of 89 and 61 mV in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4media at 50 mA cm−2, as well as satisfactory long-term stability. Additionally, the Tafel slopes in alkaline and acidic media are found to be 34 and 30.9 mV dec−1, respectively. Furthermore, it exhibits long-term stability (35 h) in alkaline and acidic media at high current densities of 50 mA cm−2, respectively. This study presents a novel strategy for developing exceptionally efficient and free-standing 3D porous aerogel electrocatalysts with potential applications in hydrogen production.

Abstract

Porphyrosiphon annulatus sp. nov. belonging to Microcoleaceae, Oscillatoriales was collected from the moist soil under the rock in the Gwanggyo Mountain of Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province, Korea and cultured. Using the raw and cultured samples of the collected strains, we observed their morphological features through LM and TEM. Furthermore, their 16S rRNA gene and 16S–23S rRNA intergenic transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences were determined to be used phylogenetic analyses. We affirmed that thick sheath of the cells possessed transversely annular and longitudinal lamellations. The ultrastructure of thylakoids was a radial arrangement, which corresponds with a characteristic of the Microcoleaceae. In addition, P. annulatus displays the most similar morphology with type species P. notarisii; however, it differently holds the transversely annular lamellations with a shorter cell length and relatively dense trichome. Our 16S rRNA gene phylogeny showed that P. annulatus formed a clade with P. notarisii, and their DNA similarity was calculated to be 96.2%. The family Microcoleaceae was found to be paraphyletic with a distinct linage of the genus Porphyrosiphon. The ITS sequence of P. annulatus was unique in length and nucleotide composition, with different secondary structures of D1–D1ʹ and Box-B helices compared to those of close relatives. Overall, morphology and genetic traits of the Korean Porphyrosiphon suggest that P. annulatus should be considered to be a novel species.
