Abstract

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) is a material developed for its high strength and light weight in a broad variety of industries including aerospace, automotive, and leisure. Due to the rapid molding cycle time, high-pressure resin transfer molding (HP-RTM) processes are prone to molding defects and susceptible to various process variables such as the resin injection rate, pressure and temperature in the mold, vacuum, end-gap, pressing force, and binder. In recent years, process monitoring technology with various sensors has been applied to stabilize the HP-RTM process and control process variables. The field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based embedded monitoring system proposed in this study enabled high-speed real-time signal processing with multiple sensors, namely pressure, temperature, and linear variable differential transformer (LVDT), and proved feasibility in the field. In the HP-RTM process, the impregnation and curing of the resin were predicted from the cavity pressure and temperature variations during the injection and curing stages. In addition, the thickness of the CFRP specimen was deduced from the change in the end-gap through the detection of the LVDT signal. Therefore, the causes of molding defects were analyzed through process monitoring and the influence of molding defects on the molding quality of CFRP was investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The pollen wall consists of an exine and an intine. The mechanism underlying its formation is not well understood. Glycosyltransferases catalyze the modification of biological molecules by attaching a single or multiple sugars and play key roles in a wide range of biological processes. We examined the role of GLYCOSYLTRANSFERASE1 (OsGT1) in pollen wall development in rice (Oryza sativa). This gene is highly expressed in mature pollen, and plants containing alleles caused by transfer DNA insertion do not produce homozygous progeny. Reciprocal crosses between OsGT1/osgt1 and the wild type indicated that the mutation leads to a male gametophyte defect. Microscopic analyses revealed that osgt1 pollen developed normally to the pollen mitosis stage but failed to produce mature grains. In osgt1 pollen, intine structure was disrupted. In addition, starch and protein levels were much lower in the mutant grains. Recombinant OsGT1 transferred glucose from UDP-glucose to the third and seventh positions of quercetin, a universal substrate of glycosyltransferases. Consistent with the role of OsGT1, an OsGT1-green fluorescent protein fusion protein was localized to the Golgi apparatus. Taken together, our results suggest that OsGT1 is a Golgi-localized glycosyltransferase essential for intine construction and pollen maturation, providing new insight into male reproductive development.

Abstract

A series of tall apartment buildings was planned to be built on reclaimed ground over a thick deltaic deposit near-shore deposit outside City of Pusan in South Korea. The soil profile consisted of approximately 30 to 50 m of soft clay, silt, and sand on sandy gravel extending to bedrock at about 100 m depth. The deep foundation system normally used in Korea consists of steel pipe piles driven to significant toe bearing in dense soils or on bedrock. Because of the anticipated significant costs of this solution, a more economical alternative foundation system was essential, and the alternative of the PHC pile, a pretensioned spun high strength concrete pile, was proposed. To evaluate the feasibility of a PHC pile alternative, a comprehensive test programme was carried out, encompassing dynamic tests, long-term monitoring of negative skin friction, laboratory pilot tests, static loading tests on instrumented test piles, and settlement analysis. The analysis of the test data required study of strain effects from hydration and swelling of concrete, and of development of residual load before static testing, as well as of distribution of resistance along the pile due to applied load, and development of negative skin friction from settling soil and resulting drag load. Reliable estimation of pile group settlement was a key issue. Five methods for calculation of pile group settlement were compared and applied to the actual foundation layouts, of which one, the Unified Design Method, could include the effect of ongoing consolidating of the soft, compressible clay layer, interaction of adjacent foundations, and factual distribution of pile shaft resistance.
