153. Plasma etching of SiO2 contact hole using perfluoropropyl vinyl ether and perfluoroisopropyl vinyl ether.

Abstract

Perfluoropropyl vinyl ether (PPVE) and perfluoroisopropyl vinyl ether (PIPVE) are used for plasma etching of SiO2 contact holes. When etching is performed on blanket SiO2 samples, the etch rates in the PPVE/Ar plasma are higher than those in the PIPVE/Ar plasma at all bias voltages. In contrast, when hole-pattern (100 nm in diameter) SiO2 samples are etched, the etch rates of the SiO2 hole in the PIPVE/Ar plasma are higher than those of the SiO2 hole in the PPVE/Ar plasma. This can be attributed to excess production of CF3+ ions in PIPVE than in PPVE, and higher contribution of physical sputtering to plasma etching in PIPVE than in PPVE. The angular dependence of the SiO2 etch rates examined using a Faraday cage reveals that the effect of physical sputtering on the SiO2 etching is greater in the PIPVE/Ar plasma than in the PPVE/Ar plasma. Abstract

Demonstrating and experimenting interdisciplinary teaching and experiential learning, faculty and students across three colleges (Agriculture and Life Sciences, Architecture and Engineering), and 4 departments (Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, Horticultural Sciences, and Civil, Biological and Agricultural Engineering) designed, implemented, and are monitoring effects of a rain garden. This collaboration presents a model for multi-scalar, interdisciplinary studio instruction involving a project conducted by over 200 undergraduate and graduate students across allied fields. Landscape Architecture students provided designs, construction details, and performance monitoring of the site as well as developed a large-scaled campus master plan. Horticultural Sciences students propagated and produced the plants. Civil engineers assisted with constructed infrastructure design and water quality/quantity assessment. Professional landscape architects, urban planners, horticulturalists, engineers and campus facilities maintenance personnel evaluated student work. This paper specifies lessons learned from the application of a program that sought to educate and train students in LID alternatives to traditional stormwater management through hands-on outdoor classroom activities. While opportunities for interdisciplinary networking, knowledge of the landscape construction process, and the ability to utilize scientific rationale for design decision making all increased, challenges included coordination efforts across disciplines, overcoming unknown nomenclature specific to each field, delays due to unforeseen circumstances, and budgetary increased as a result of maintenance issues. However, Collaboration between multidisciplinary professionals enabled students to experience the professional design process and have a deeper understanding of the positive impacts of green infrastructure through interdisciplinary experiential learning.

155. The Mre11-Nbs1 interface is essential for viability and tumor suppression

Abstract

The Mre11 complex (Mre11, Rad50, and Nbs1) is integral to both DNA repair and ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM)-dependent DNA damage signaling. All three Mre11 complex components are essential for viability at the cellular and organismal levels. To delineate essential and non-essential Mre11 complex functions that are mediated by Nbs1, we used TALEN-based genome editing to derive Nbs1 mutant mice (Nbs1mid mice), which harbor mutations in the Mre11 interaction domain of Nbs1. Nbs1mid alleles that abolished interaction were incompatible with viability. Conversely, a 108-amino-acid Nbs1 fragment comprising the Mre11 interface was sufficient to rescue viability and ATM activation in cultured cells and support differentiation of hematopoietic cells in vivo. These data indicate that the essential role of Nbs1 is via its interaction with Mre11 and that most of the Nbs1 protein is dispensable for Mre11 complex functions and suggest that Mre11 and Rad50 directly activate ATM.

Abstract

Multiple gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are physically encapsulated within a poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) particle at room temperature by an in situ reduction method using trisodium citrate (Cit) and sodium oxalate (Oxa) to serve as quasi‐homogeneous catalysts for carbon−carbon bond‐forming reactions under base‐free aerobic conditions. The use of Oxa results in a more rapid formation and higher loading of AuNPs within the polymer particles compared to those prepared with conventional Cit. Upon dispersing both composite particles in EtOH‐rich aqueous solvents, the polymer matrices maintain a fully swollen structure while still providing great stability to the AuNPs whose surfaces are analyzed to be nearly free from the reducing/stabilizing agents. As a catalyst in homocoupling reactions, the composite particles prepared with Oxa exhibit higher activity, selectivity, and recyclability with a much lower activation energy than those prepared with Cit. The preparation of the composite particles and their catalytic properties are optimized under environmentally‐friendly reaction conditions, and the relationship between structural features and catalytic functions are examined to potentially develop robust, versatile, and green catalytic systems. Abstract

Domestic and industrial wastewaters are subject to the biological treatment process before discharged to environment. In that process, organic substances contained in the wastewater are degraded by microorganisms. Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are suitable technology for wastewater treatment, simultaneously producing hydrogen. In most case, however, a significant amount of methane instead of hydrogen is produced when the wastewater is used for MECs. Here we show that hydrogen is the main product when Makgeolli wastewater (MW) is used as a substrate in a single‐chamber MEC which was operated using acetate and MW. Although current generation profiles vary according to the substrate type and the applied voltage, hydrogen portions were maintained over 90% at −0.6 V and −0.8 V with production rates of 0.95 and 1.55 m3H2/m3/d, respectively.
