159. Interference‐Enhanced Broadband Absorption of Monolayer MoS2 on Sub‐100 nm Thick SiO2/Si Substrates: Reflection and Transmission Phase Changes at Interfaces.

Abstract

Abstract: The optical characteristics of MoS2 monolayers on SiO2/Si substrates with an SiO2 thickness ranging from 40 to 130 nm are investigated. The measured Raman and optical reflection spectra of the MoS2 monolayers vary considerably depending on the SiO2 thickness. The Raman peak intensity of the MoS2 monolayer on the substrate with an 80 nm thick SiO2 layer is four times larger than those in the cases of 40‐ and 130 nm thick SiO2 layers, indicating a significant difference in the absorption at the excitation wavelength. The incident light undergoes anomalous phase changes upon reflection and transmission at the highly absorbing MoS2/nonabsorbing SiO2 or air interfaces. The phase changes at these interfaces in conjunction with those induced by the propagation of light in the SiO2 layer cause complex interference, which dramatically tunes the absorption spectrum of the MoS2 layer with changing SiO2 thickness. Neither wavelength nor the incident angle of light strongly affects the interface phase change. Thus, the MoS2 monolayers on sub‐100 nm thick SiO2/Si substrates exhibit broadband omnidirectional absorption in the visible range. This work demonstrates that SiO2/Si wafers, which are the most popular substrates, allow the optical responses of MoS2 monolayers to be optimized for optoelectronic applications. 161. Randomized controlled trial of steroid-soaked absorbable calcium alginate nasal packing following endoscopic sinus surgery.

Abstract

Objectives/hypothesis: To evaluate the potential efficacy of steroid-soaked, absorbable calcium alginate nasal packing following endoscopic sinus surgery.Study Design: Prospective, randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled trial.Methods: Twenty-two patients (44 nostrils) who had chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps underwent bilateral endoscopic sinus surgery. Only those with an intersinus difference in Lund-Mackay severity score of 1 or less were included. In each patient, one randomly selected nostril was packed with calcium alginate soaked with 2 mL of triamcinolone (40 mg/mL) (triamcinolone group), whereas the contralateral nostril received an identical packing soaked in 2 mL of normal saline (saline group). Two independent investigators blinded to the packing allocation scored the surgical field using the validated Perioperative Sinus Endoscopy (POSE) scores 1, 4, and 8 weeks after surgery.Results: All 44 nostrils were analyzed; the Lund-Mackay scores did not differ significantly between the groups before surgery. Eight weeks after surgery, the total POSE scores were significantly lower in the triamcinolone group (P = .014). The POSE scoring parameters were then compared between groups, and the following variables were significantly different: middle turbinate synechiae with the lateral wall (P = .037), polypoid degeneration of the ethmoid cavity (P = .006), and sphenoid sinus severity (P = .036).Conclusions: This study demonstrated that steroid-soaked, absorbable nasal packing can be used to enhance wound healing after endoscopic sinus surgery and to prevent polypoid changes in the nasal mucosa.Level Of Evidence: 1b. CONTEXT Tacrolimus is a potent immunosuppressive drug often administered to transplant recipient patients and exhibits a variety of adverse cardiovascular effects. CASE REPORT We report a case of a 53-year-old Asian female who developed various arrhythmic phenomena including atrial premature complexes and supraventricular tachycardia after administration of tacrolimus. CONCLUSION Tacrolimus-associated arrhythmia after kidney transplantation may be life-threatening, and so patients undergoing this procedure should be carefully monitored. CONTEXTO Tacrolimus (tacrolimo) é uma potente droga imunossupressora frequentemente administrada a pacientes receptores de transplante e exibe uma variedade de efeitos cardiovasculares adversos. RELATO DE CASO Relatamos um caso de uma mulher asiática de 53 anos de idade que desenvolveu vários fenômenos de arritmias, incluindo complexos atriais prematuros e taquicardia supraventricular após a administração de tacrolimus. CONCLUSÃO Tacrolimus associado a arritmia após transplante de rim pode ser fatal, por isso, pacientes submetidos a esse procedimento devem ser cuidadosamente monitorados.

164. Survival by Time of Day of Hemodialysis in Korean Patients: A Single Center Study

Abstract

Background: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) typically undergo hemodialysis (HD) during the morning or afternoon, with time of treatment generally based on space availability or patient preference. No studies have investigated variation in patient survival as a function of the time of day of dialysis in Korean HD patients. We investigated the association of patient HD treatment shift with continued survival, controlling for well-established HD-related mortality risk factors. Method: A 10-year (from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2010) follow-up retrospective cohort study was conducted among 120 ESRD patients who underwent HD at Kosin University Gospel Hospital either during a morning shift (n = 60) or an afternoon shift (n = 60). A variable comparison was conducted using a Chi-square test and t-test for categorical and continuous variables, respectively. Life table analysis was used to compare survival rates in the two treatment groups. Results: The mean survival rate of the morning-shift HD patients and afternoon-shift HD patients were not statistically different (mean survival, 61.1 months vs. 48.2 months; P = 0.139). The unadjusted 5-year survival rate for patients on morning shift hemodialysis was 87.3% versus 86.4% for patients on afternoon shift hemodialysis (P = 0.704 by Wilcoxon test). Conclusions: The survival rates of morning-shift HD patients and afternoon-shift HD patients were not different. Results from this cohort study may warrant prospective observational studies and randomized clinical trials in Korean HD patients for whom the time of day at which HD is administered is systemically varied.

A photoanode was fabricated using hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles which had been held in a thin film of hydrogen titanate nanotubes (H-TiNT), synthesized by repetitive self-assembling method on FTO (fluorine-doped tin oxide) glass, which were incorporated via dipping process in aqueous Fe(NO3)3 solution. Current voltage (I-V) electrochemical properties of the photoanode heat-treated at 500°C for 10 min in air were evaluated under ultraviolet-visible light irradiation. Microstructure and crystallinity changes were also investigated. The prepared Fe2O3/H-TiNT/FTO composite thin film exhibited about threefold as much photocurrent as the Fe2O3/FTO film. The improvement in photocurrent was considered to be caused by reduced recombination of electrons and holes, with an appropriate amount of Fe2O3 spherical nanoparticles supported on the H-TiNT/FTO film. Nanosized spherical Fe2O3 particles with about 65 wt% on the H-TiNT/FTO film showed best performance in our study.

171. Differences in clinical features between laparoscopy and open resection for primary tumor in patients with stage IV colorectal cancer

We also evaluated short-term and oncologic outcomes after laparoscopy and open surgery.Methods: A total of 100 consecutive stage IV patients undergoing open (n=61) or laparoscopic (n=39) major resection were analyzed. There were four cases (10%) of conversion to laparotomy in the laparoscopy group.Results: Pathological T4 tumors (56% vs 26%), primary colon cancers (74% vs 51%), and larger tumor diameter (6 vs 5 cm) were more commonly managed with open surgery. Right colectomy was more common in the open surgery group (39%) and low anterior resection was more common in the laparoscopy group (39%, P=0.002). Hepatic metastases in segments II, III, IVb, V, and VI were more frequently resected with laparoscopy (100%) than with open surgery (56%), although the difference was not statistically significant. In colon and rectal cancers, mean operative time and 30-day complication rates of laparoscopy and open surgery did not differ. In both cancers, mean time to soft diet and length of hospital stay were shorter in the laparoscopy group. Mean time from surgery to chemotherapy commencement was significantly shorter with laparoscopy than with open surgery. In colon and rectal cancers, 2-year cancer-specific and progression-free survival rates were similar between the laparoscopy and open surgery groups.Conclusion: Based on our findings, laparoscopy can be selected as an initial approach in patients with a primary tumor without adjacent organ invasion and patients without primary tumor-related symptoms. Abstract

This study aimed to investigate whether a touch-screen tablet device can be used to avoid underestimation of cognitive function due to hand disability in patients with stroke. Thirty patients with stroke and hemiplegia were divided according to whether the paretic side corresponded to their dominant or non-dominant hand. They were given the cube-copying task twice, once via paper and once via tablet. The results between paper- and tablet-based tasks were more likely to be concordant in participants with a non-paretic dominant hand (z = 2.80,p = 0.005) when the stroke type, education years, and sex were included in the model. All participants with discordant test results had a paretic dominant hand and showed lower muscle power in the wrist and hand muscles. In conclusion, cognitive function in patients with a paretic dominant hand may be underestimated in the cube-copying task, because it requires handwriting ability.
