Abstract

The family Amaryllidaceae displays striking diversity in floral morphology, and as such its members have been grown as ornamentals since long in the Kashmir valley to enhance its picturesque natural landscape. In the absence of a taxonomic account of the ornamental species of Amaryllidaceae available for Kashmir valley, the present study report 19 species belonging to 13 genera of the family. For each ornamental species, the currently accepted name, brief taxonomic description, flowering phenology and plant images are provided for their easy identification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Through litter decomposition enormous amounts of carbon is emitted to the atmosphere. Numerous large-scale decomposition experiments have been conducted focusing on this fundamental soil process in order to understand the controls on the terrestrial carbon transfer to the atmosphere. However, previous studies were mostly based on site-specific litter and methodologies, adding major uncertainty to syntheses, comparisons and meta-analyses across different experiments and sites. In the TeaComposition initiative, the potential litter decomposition is investigated by using standardized substrates (Rooibos and Green tea) for comparison of litter mass loss at 336 sites (ranging from −9 to +26 °C MAT and from 60 to 3113 mm MAP) across different ecosystems. In this study we tested the effect of climate (temperature and moisture), litter type and land-use on early stage decomposition (3 months) across nine biomes. We show that litter quality was the predominant controlling factor in early stage litter decomposition, which explained about 65% of the variability in litter decomposition at a global scale. The effect of climate, on the other hand, was not litter specific and explained <0.5% of the variation for Green tea and 5% for Rooibos tea, and was of significance only under unfavorable decomposition conditions (i.e. xeric versus mesic environments). When the data were aggregated at the biome scale, climate played a significant role on decomposition of both litter types (explaining 64% of the variation for Green tea and 72% for Rooibos tea). No significant effect of land-use on early stage litter decomposition was noted within the temperate biome. Our results indicate that multiple drivers are affecting early stage litter mass loss with litter quality being dominant. In order to be able to quantify the relative importance of the different drivers over time, long-term studies combined with experimental trials are needed.

Abstract

Images and videos of organisms recorded in the wild have relevance for biodiversity studies. With the advent of smartphones and their potential integration with microscopy, scientific documentation and recording of organisms has surged to an unprecedented scale. Here we report a novel method, developed by integration of a portable smartphone with a handheld field microscope that we term Smartphone-integrated Field Microscopy (SPFM), to capture images and videos which can be highly useful in field-based biodiversity studies. We firstly describe the design of the method and equipment used, followed by successful field demonstration of the method using a case study of the gymnosperm Ephedra intermedia Schrenk & C. A. Meyer in the Kashmir Himalaya. We then discuss the novelty of our method and its potential applications in biodiversity studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Dactylorhiza umbrosa(Kar. &Kir.) Nevski is reported for the first time from Kashmir Himalaya, India. A brief description, illustration, photographs of diagnostic features, and a distribution map is provided. Also provided are comparative characters to distinguish D. umbrosa from other species already known from Kashmir Himalaya: D. hatagirea, D. kafiriana and D. viridis. The species shows rare distribution in the alpine habitats of this Himalayan region and overexploitation for local use poses threat to the existence of this rare medicinal orchid species. Therefore, the documentation of this species assumes significance for devising conservation strategies and sustainable use in this Himalayan region.

Abstract

Globally, the increase in the climatic variability has led to adverse effects on the treeline species in the high-elevation mountain landscapes. Identifying the geographical space that supports the treeline species survival over time is essential for conservation biogeography. Increase in the global warming and snowmelt has made available the treeline species favourable niches in the higher elevations. Random Forest algorithm assuming non-parametric distribution was employed to predict the potential distribution of Betula utilis niche in the Hindu-Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. The potential distributions were simulated in the Last Inter-Glaciation (LIG), present (the year 1970–2000) and future (the year 2061–2080) environmental conditions. The actual distribution of the species in the current time was modelled and evaluated. The model sensitivity with reference to independent evaluation dataset for highly suitable B. utilis niche was 0.78. The model statistics of the current time was further applied to both the LIG and future (2061–2080) scenarios in order to get a fundamental niche of B. utilis. The treeline species, B. utilis was projected to become vulnerable to 21st century climate changes. The high suitability of B. utilis occurrence in the LIG, current and the future scenario were more likely in the elevation ranges 2601–2800 m, 3801–4000 m, and 4201–4400 m, respectively. The magnitude of advancement was relatively more along elevation and longitude, compared to the latitudinal gradient. Summary: To achieve the challenging goals of minimizing loss of species and achieving sustainable use of biodiversity, conservation prioritization merits urgent research attention. The present study identifies the priority of conservation for the medicinal flora of the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) region, a Himalayan biodiversity hotspot. A total of 881 medicinal plant species were scored based on key ecological (endemism, threat status) and socioeconomic (use value, mode of harvesting) criteria, and 50 of these are prioritized for conservation; most of these are narrow endemics. Worryingly, all of the 50 prioritized species are currently recognized under different International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources threat categories, are highly prized for their use in traditional medicine in the region and are precious sustainable bioresources for the herbal industry. Most of these prioritized species are being harvested illegally. This integrated ecological and socioeconomic study has immediate implications for evidence-based and target-orientated conservation policy and practice in this Himalayan region. Abstract

In the urban landscapes, scientific understanding of the roadside vegetation is a prerequisite for better planning and designing of sustainable cities. The Srinagar city, located in the Indian Himalayas, represents an urban biodiversity hotspot but the information about the floristic diversity especially along its roadsides is lacking. In order to fill this knowledge gap, the present study using field-based plant collection surveys was undertaken to investigate the floristic diversity growing along the roadsides of Srinagar. A total of 206 vascular plant species were recorded with the proportion of alien species relatively higher (52%) than the native species (48%). Of the 108 alien species, 24 were invasive, 44 naturalized, 12 casual and 23 were cultivated. Most of the species were herbs (165 spp.) and the majority of these were wild growing (155 spp.). Based on Raunkiaer's lifeform characterization, therophytes (94 spp.) were the most dominant. Interestingly, the therophytes harboured the highest number of alien species (50 spp.), followed by phanerophytes (29 spp.). There was significant difference between the floristic spectrum obtained during the present study and the normal Raunkiaer's spectrum. 192. Fruit morphology of the genus PotamogetonL. in Kashmir Himalaya and its utility in taxonomic delimitation

Abstract

The fruit morphology of eight species of the genus PotamogetonL. in Kashmir Himalaya was examined, using stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, in order to determine their utility in taxonomic delimitation. During the study, both macro- and micromorphological characters, including the fruit shape, size, color, and nature of the fruit beak, were investigated. The results reveal that the broad- and linear-leaved species have keeled fruits, whereas in filiform-leaved species the dorsal and lateral keels are either absent or obscure. The present study clearly shows the potential utility of fruit features as delimiting characters in order to distinguish different species of the genus Potamogetonin this Himalayan region.

Abstract

The current paper provides a taxonomic inventory of the vascular plant species collected by the authors during the last two decades from the Rajouri and Poonch districts, located along the Pir Panjal range in the Indian Himalayan State of Jammu and Kashmir. The inventory records a total of 352 species, which belong to 270 genera in 83 families. Of the total taxa, the angiosperms are represented by 331 species in 253 genera and 77 families; gymnosperms by 12 species in 9 genera and 3 families; and pteridophytes by 9 species in 7 genera and 3 families. Asteraceae is the largest family, contributing 42 species; while Artemisia is the largest genus, with 5 species. The inventory is expected to provide baseline scientific data for further studies on plant diversity in these two border districts, and can be used to facilitate the long-term conservation and sustainable use of plant resources in this Himalayan region.

Aspicera hartigiDalla Torre, 1889 is reported for the first time from India. A brief diagnosis and photographic illustrations of the species are provided to validate this new faunal record for India from the Kashmir valley in Western Himalaya. In addition, the present study for the first time reports the feeding of Aspicera hartigion the pollination drop of the female cones in Ephedraplants, which provides novel insights about its foraging behavior and hint toward its role as pollination drop robber.

Abstract

The genus Actaea L., comprising 32 species, has recently emerged as a source of potential phytochemicals with promising pharmacological properties. However, there is no review available integrating the scattered scientific studies on this genus. To fill this knowledge gap, an extensive review of the genus Actaea is presented with a focus on its ethnomedical uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacology. For this review, 162 publications including 152 research papers, seven books, two dictionaries, and one glossary published from 1896 to April 2020 A.D. were critically reviewed and relevant data extracted. The chemical structures and formulae of compounds have been sourced and validated using PubChem database, and drawn using Chem Draw Ultra 6.0. The scientific nomenclature follows The Plant List. For over more than a century, the ethnomedical uses of eight species of this genus in treating 29 types of human diseases under different traditional medical systems have been reported. Over the last two decades, the phytochemical studies so far conducted on 16 species of Actaea have led to the isolation of more than 400 different compounds, notably cycloartane triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, and nitrogenous compounds. Based on these phytochemical studies on Actaea species, the recent resurgence on pharmacological research conducted on 16 species has led to novel leads with potential applications. We highlight the current knowledge gaps and discuss future research prospects on the genus Actaea , which can guide its bio-prospection and sustainable use in the near future.
