Abstract

Periodontal disease is caused by specific pathogens which results in inflammation of the tooth-supporting structures and subsequently causes the continued breakdown of alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a perennial herb with substantial medicinal value. Licorice extract is derived from dried, unpeeled stolons and roots of Glycyrrhiza uralensis and G. glabra. The bioactive ingredients in licorice extract such as glycyrrhizin, licoricidin, glabridin, licochalcone A, and licorisoflavan A have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-adherence effects that are beneficial against periodontal disease. Since periodontal disease has a complex etiology that includes the host response and microorganisms, licorice phytochemicals offer a therapeutic advantage due to their dual functionality. The aim of this review was to enumerate the bioactive compounds present in herbal licorice extract and to elucidate the beneficial effects of licorice and its derivatives in periodontal therapy. Literature review and clinical trials evaluating the effect of licorice on periodontopathogens and periodontal disease are included in this article.

Abstract

Present study evaluated the therapeutic efficacy and safety of two Unani compound drugs namely Majun-e-Suranjan and Habb-e-Azraqi in cases of gout on modern scientific parameters viz., clinical, biochemical and haematological. This work was conducted at Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Aligarh, during 2014-2019. 71 people were chosen from the pool of patients visiting the outpatient department (OPD). Patients received the Unani medicines Majun-e-Suranjan in a dose of 5.0 g and Habb-e-Azraqi in a dose of 1 pill (250 mg) twice daily after meals for a period of 56-days. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for the analysis of data, and the statistical significance of the findings was determined by Dennett's test. The study reveals that the two Unani medicines are safe, non-toxic, and significantly relieve the symptoms of gouty arthritis. It is suggested to conduct more research among a large population. Abstract

The current pandemic caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona-Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a global health menace with significant morbidity and mortality besides huge socioeconomic implications. Despite the approval of few vaccines for the prevention of the disease, the discovery of safe and effective countermeasures especially from natural sources is of paramount importance, as the number of cases continues escalating. Arq Ajīb has long been used for various diseases and its ingredients have been reported for antiviral, antimicrobial, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activities. The present study investigates the inhibitory effect of phytocompound of Arq Ajīb on potential drug targets of SARS-CoV-2. The structures of phytocompounds present in Arq Ajīb were retrieved from PubChem database and some were illustrated using Marvin Sketch. SARS-CoV-2 S glycoprotein (PDB ID: 6LZG) and 3CLpro (PDB ID: 7BQY) were selected as the target protein. Dock Prep module in UCSF Chimera software was used for receptor structure processing. AutoDock Vina was used to calculate the binding affinities between the protein and ligands and to predict most promising compounds with best scores. Molecular docking results predicted that the phytocompounds of Arq Ajīb had good binding affinity and interaction with S glycoprotein and 3CLpro. Quercetin and Isorhoifolin from Mentha arvensis were identified as promising candidates with the potential to interact with 3CLpro and spike glycoprotein and inhibit the viral replication and its entry into the host. Arq Ajīb may prove valuable for developing novel therapeutic candidate for COVID-19; however, it has to be substantiated further with in-vitro and in-vivo studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

171. Photoswitchable nonlinear optical properties of azobenzene-based supramolecular complexes: insights from density functional theory.

Abstract

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed for a series of supramolecular assemblies containing azobenzene (Azo-X where X = I, Br and H) and alkoxystilbazole subunits to evaluate their electronic, linear and nonlinear optical properties. These assemblies are derivatives of azobenzene, obtained by the substitution of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups onto the molecular skeleton. The interaction energies (Eint) of all the designed supramolecular complexes (IA–IF, IIA–IIF and IIIA–IIIF) range from −1.0 kcal mol−1 to −7.7 kcal mol−1. The electronic properties of these hydrogen/halogen bond driven supramolecular assemblies such as vertical ionization energies (VIE), HOMO–LUMO energy gap (GH–L), excitation energies, density of states (DOS) and natural population (NPA) analyses were also computed. The non-covalent interaction index (NCI) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analyses were also performed to validate the nature of inter- and intra-molecular interactions in these complexes. A substantial enhancement in the first hyperpolarizability (β0) values of the designed supramolecular complexes was observed, which is driven by the charge transfer from the pyridyl moiety of alkoxystilbazole to Azo-X. The highest β0 value of 1.3 × 104 au was observed for the supramolecular complex of p-nitro substituted azobenzene with alkoxystilbazole (ID complex). Moreover, the results show that the substitution of electron-withdrawing groups on Azo-X can also bring larger β0 values for such complexes. It was confirmed on a purely theoretical basis that both the types of noncovalent interactions present and the substituent group incorporated influence the nonlinear optical (NLO) response of the systems. Furthermore, the β0 values of the E (trans) and Z (cis) forms were compared to demonstrate the two-way photoinduced switching mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Harvesting fully ripe tomatoes with mobile robots presents significant challenges in real-world scenarios. These challenges arise from factors such as occlusion caused by leaves and branches, as well as the color similarity between tomatoes and the surrounding foliage during the fruit development stage. The natural environment further compounds these issues with varying light conditions, viewing angles, occlusion factors, and different maturity levels. To overcome these obstacles, this research introduces a novel framework that leverages a convolutional transformer architecture to autonomously recognize and grade tomatoes, irrespective of their occlusion level, lighting conditions, and ripeness. The proposed model is trained and tested using carefully annotated images curated specifically for this purpose. The dataset is prepared under various lighting conditions, viewing perspectives, and employs different mobile camera sensors, distinguishing it from existing datasets such as Laboro Tomato and Rob2Pheno Annotated Tomato. The effectiveness of the proposed framework in handling cluttered and occluded tomato instances was evaluated using two additional public datasets, Laboro Tomato and Rob2Pheno Annotated Tomato, as benchmarks. The evaluation results across these three datasets demonstrate the exceptional performance of our proposed framework, surpassing the state-of-the-art by 58.14%, 65.42%, and 66.39% in terms of mean average precision scores for KUTomaData, Laboro Tomato, and Rob2Pheno Annotated Tomato, respectively. The results underscore the superiority of the proposed model in accurately detecting and delineating tomatoes compared to baseline methods and previous approaches.
