This article presents a speech by Richard P. Keeling, medicine professor and director of University Health Services at the University of Wisconsin, delivered at the 39th annual meeting of The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality in Houston. Texas . The purpose of the speech is to address humankind's questions on sexuality. People have known since the beginning of sexology that there are dangers posed by certain predators such as limited grant funding and conservative legislators on the nurturing of young people in a changing environment. Sexuality research and education have always faced conflict, threat and criticism. Further gradual change improves the climate in the discipline of sexual science. Qualitative research challenges and expands concepts of knowledge. The change humanizes all science and the sexual science most particularly. The real challenges to the work of sexual scientists are not so much a matter of the usual and predictable conflicts as they are truly tectonic alterations of the framework, support structures, and sustenance of the little ecosystem that sexual science has enjoyed. It is therefore essential that investment should be made in individual institutional relationships, commitments should be initiated to advancing higher education in general.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes a chronic, progressive, immune deficiency disease, the most severe phase of which is Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). HIV is a newly characterized human retrovirus transmitted only by direct exposure to blood or blood derivatives, certain acts of sexual intercourse, or transfer from infected mother to fetus or infant. The article discusses the issues generated by AIDS in college campuses in the U.S. The American College Health Association has established a Task Force on AIDS in late 1985 with the purpose of providing recommendations and guidelines for institutions to use in formulating a response to AIDS. The issues generated by AIDS cause discomfort and uncertainty for many school administrators, counselors and health care providers. The growing number of AIDS cases, the frightening fatality rate, and the extraordinary amount of media attention paid to it have subsequently combined to create a high degree of public awareness of the disease.

Genital herpes virus infection is an important target for health education efforts because of its apparently rising incidence in the college student population and because it can have potentially serious psychological as well as medical consequences. In order to better understand the health education and counseling needs of students, the present study surveyed knowledge and attitudes about genital herpes of 190 university students using a gynecology clinic and of 161 students using a general medical clinic. The students were found to have a high degree of familiarity with the disease, its cause, and mode of transmission, but tended to view the consequences of the disease as more severe than is actually warranted by the common medical complications. There was some degree of misinformation about prevention and treatment of the disease and some negative attitudes about patients suffering from it, but the survey respondents endorsed a high level of responsible behavior with regard to the disease and expressed some optimism about the possibility of adapting to it. These findings suggest specific misconceptions about genital herpes that might be amenable to a mass education approach. They also suggest the need for a counseling program that centers around reasonable reassurance and appropriately positive psychological and medical management for newly diagnosed patients.
