151. Using the dynamic, expanding liquid–liquid interface in a Hele–Shaw cell in crystal growth and nanoparticle assembly

Abstract

The liquid-liquid interface has been used with considerable success in the synthesis of advanced materials ranging from (bio)minerals to inorganic membranes to nanoparticles. In almost all such cases, the interface is static. The Hele-Shaw cell in which a viscous fluid is displaced by a less viscous one in a constrained manner has been invaluable in the study of dynamic instabilities at interfaces and in the study of viscous fingering pattern formation. However, the potential of the Hele-Shaw cell in carrying out reactions at the interface between the two fluids leading to the formation of inorganic materials has been largely unrecognized and underexploited. Realizing that the dynamic liquid-liquid interface in a Hele-Shaw cell would provide opportunities to control a variety of time-scales associated with material formation, we have started a program on the use of the Hele-Shaw cell in materials synthesis. In this discussion paper, we present some of our recent results on the growth of calcium carbonate crystals in the Hele-Shaw cell by the reaction of Ca2+ ions electrostatically complexed with carboxylate ions pinned to the interface with carbonate ions present in the aqueous part of the biphasic reaction medium. We show that both polymorph selectivity and the morphology of the crystals may be modulated by varying the experimental conditions in the cell. We also discuss the possibility of using the dynamic interface in the Hele-Shaw cell to cross-link gold nanoparticles in water through bifunctional linkers present in the oil phase and investigate the nature of the structures formed.

Abstract

In 1982 Madhekar and Thakare defined and studied a pair of biorthogonal polynomials {Jn(α, β, k; x)} and {Kn(α, β, k; x)} with respect to Jacobi weight function (1-x)α (1+x)β over the interval (-1, 1) where α > -1; β > -1 and k is positive integer. In the present paper some generating functions of biorthogonal polynomials of second set {Kn(α, β, k; x)} involving Stirling numbers of second kind are obtained by using Srivastava's method and some particular cases are also noted.

The structure of theK π = 2+ gamma vibrational bands and the quasi-gamma bands of even-Z-even-N nuclei is investigated on a global scale, vis-a-vis the variation of band head, the moment of inertia of the band and the odd-even spin staggering. The variation withN andZ and with spinJ of the odd-even spin energy staggering index is studied and a unified view of the same is presented.

During the 6-year study using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) U.S. National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) definitions for device-associated health care-associated infection (DA-HAI), we collected prospective data from 605,310 patients hospitalized in the INICC's ICUs for an aggregate of 3,338,396 days. Although device utilization in the INICC's ICUs was similar to that reported from ICUs in the U.S. in the CDC's NHSN, rates of device-associated nosocomial infection were higher in the ICUs of the INICC hospitals: the pooled rate of central line-associated bloodstream infection in the INICC's ICUs, 4.9 per 1,000 central line days, is nearly 5-fold higher than the 0.9 per 1,000 central line days reported from comparable U. S. ICUs. The overall rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia was also higher (16.8 vs 1.1 per 1,000 ventilator days) as was the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (5.5 vs 1.3 per 1,000 catheter days). Frequencies of resistance of Pseudomonas isolates to amikacin (42.8% vs 10%) and imipenem (42.4% vs 26.1%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates to ceftazidime (71.2% vs 28.8%) and imipenem (19.6% vs 12.8%) were also higher in the INICC's ICUs compared with the ICUs of the CDC's NHSN. Abstract

The three parameter variable moment of inertia (VMI) nuclear softness model named VMINS3 is shown to be adequate in reproducing the main features of the VMI model. Its failure for deformed nuclei reported by earlier workers is shown to be the result of a wrong approach in the calculation. The variation of the softness parameter \ensuremath{\sigma} and of the stretching parameter $K=(\frac{1}{2})C{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{0}^{2}$ with increasing deformation of the nuclear core is now consistent with results of the variable moment of inertia model.

Abstract

Treating the energy of the 21+ state in even Z- even N nuclei as a sum of rotational energy (ROTE) and vibrational energy (VIBE), the evolution of the shape transition with the increase in the valence nucleon pairs product (Np Nn) is studied via the variation of ROTE/E(21+). The correspondence of relative ROTE, B(E2)↑ and (βdef/βs.p.) values vs. the Np Nn product is illustrated. A correlation of the Rotation-Vibration interaction constant in the ground band levels with the 0β+ energy is also derived. Comparison is made with variable moment of inertia model expressions.

Abstract

Vehicle platooning is an important innovation in the automotive industry that aims at improving safety, mileage, efficiency, and the time needed to travel. This research focuses on the various aspects of vehicle platooning, one of the important aspects being analysis of different control strategies that lead to a stable and robust platoon. Safety of passengers being a very important consideration, the control design should be such that the controller remains robust under uncertain environments. As a part of the Department of Energy (DOE) project, this research also tries to show a demonstration of vehicle platooning using robots. In an automated highway scenario, a vehicle platoon can be thought of as a string of vehicles, following one another as a platoon. Being equipped by wireless communication capabilities, these vehicles communicate with one another to maintain their formation as a platoon, hence are "cognitive." Autonomous capable vehicles in tightly spaced, computer-controlled platoons will lead to savings in energy due to reduced aerodynamic forces, as well as increased passenger comfort since there will be no sudden accelerations or decelerations. Impacts in the occurrence of collisions, if any, will be very low. The greatest benefit obtained is, however, an increase in highway capacity, along with reduction in traffic congestion, pollution, and energy consumption. Another aspect of this project is the automated electric transportation (AET). This aims at providing energy directly to vehicles from electric highways, thus reducing their energy consumption and CO2 emission. By eliminating the use of overhead wires, infrastructure can be upgraded by electrifying highways and providing energy on demand and in real time to moving vehicles via a wireless energy transfer phenomenon known as "wireless inductive coupling." The work done in this research will help to gain an insight into vehicle platooning and the control system related to maintaining the vehicles in this formation.

Abstract

A single term expression in the form of a Power law with two unknown coefficients is proposed. It explains fairly well the energies of ground bands in even-even nuclei in the A = 150-200 region. The index b and the coefficient a in this expression are fairly constant independent of the level spin, below the back bending energy. Variation of average a and b with Z and N, and with the valence nucleon pair product Np Nn is also illustrated and agrees with general expectations.

A theoretical study has been made of the effect of an apodizing screen in front of a circular aperture on the images of periodic objects with rectangular and triangular transmission profile. Irradiance distribution and contrast in the far field diffraction images have been calculated assuming the incident illumination to be completely incoherent. Object functions which give wave response similar to sine wave response (OTF) have been identified.

Abstract

Scattering of neutrons and X-rays from molecules in solution offers alternative approaches to the study of a wide range of macromolecular structures in their solution state without crystallization. We study one part of the problem of elucidating three-dimensional structure from solution scattering data, determining the distribution of interatomic distances, P(r), where r is the distance between two atoms in the protein molecule. This problem is known to be ill-conditioned: for a single observed diffraction pattern, there may be many consistent distance distribution functions, and there is a risk of overfitting the observed scattering data. We propose a new approach to avoiding this problem: accepting the validity of multiple alternative P(r) curves rather than seeking a single "best." We place linear constraints to ensure that a computed P(r) is consistent with the experimental data. The constraints enforce smoothness in the P(r) curve, ensure that the P(r) curve is a probability distribution, and allow for experimental error. We use these constraints to precisely describe the space of all consistent P(r) curves as a polytope of histogram values or Fourier coefficients. We develop a linear programming approach to sampling the space of consistent, realistic P(r) curves. On both experimental and simulated scattering data, our approach efficiently generates ensembles of such curves that display substantial diversity.

Abstract

With increasing concern about energy shortage and environmental protection, research on reducing exhaust emissions, reducing fuel consumption, reducing engine noise and increasing specific outputs has become the major researching aspect in combustion and engine development. Alternative fuels such as CNG, HCNG, LPG, LNG, Bio-Diesel, Biogas, Hydrogen, Ethanol, Methanol, Di-Methyl Ether, Producer gas, P-series have been tried worldwide. Hydrogen as a future fuel for IC engines is also being considered. But several obstacles have to overcome before commercialization of Hydrogen as an IC engine fuel for automotive sector. Hydrogen and CNG blends (HCNG) may be considered as an automotive fuel without any major modification in the existing CNG engine and infrastructure. A strategy has been worked out for converting the developed CNG engine to run on HCNG. The testing is carried out for the neat CNG and 5% blends of Hydrogen by volume with CNG. It is observed in the experimental work that the HCNG engines are more superior to CNG carbureted engines from fuel economy, power output and emission compliance point of view. The power improvement of 11% and fuel consumption reduction of 8% is observed in HCNG engine than the CNG engine. The addition of hydrogen into natural gas increases the burning velocity of mixture, shortening the combustion duration, increasing the cylinder gas temperature, and this increases the effective thermal efficiency compared to that of natural gas engine under the same lean mixture condition. The HCNG engine increases the H/C ratio of the fuel, which drastically reduces the carbon based emissions such as CO, CO2 and HC. To increase the flame speed of HCNG engines, the ignition timing needs to be retarded; this results in reduction of NOx emissions. It is important to note that 5% blends of hydrogen by volume with CNG the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittlement does not occur with respect to engine components, hence no major change is anticipated in fuel system and engine components. Moreover, it improves the engine efficiency, which lowers fuel consumption and hydrocarbon emissions. The research work is undertaken to demonstrate the viability of HCNG as an automotive fuel. This paper explains how CNG is the best route to ensure an early entry of hydrogen fuel into our energy infrastructure. Abstract

One common mobile robot design consists of three ‘omniwheels’ arranged at the vertices of an equilateral triangle, with wheel axles aligned with the rays from the center of the triangle to each wheel. Omniwheels, like standard wheels, are driven by the motors in a direction perpendicular to the wheel axle, but unlike standard wheels, can slip in a direction parallel to the axle. Unlike a steered car, a vehicle with this design can move in any direction without needing to rotate first, and can spin as it does so. We show that if there are independent bounds on the speeds of the wheels, the fastest trajectories for this vehicle contain only spins in place, circular arcs, and straight lines parallel to the wheel axles. We classify optimal trajectories by the order and type of the segments; there are four such classes, and there are no more than 18 control switches in any optimal trajectory.

Abstract

What is the shortest or fastest path a mobile robot can follow between two configurations in the unobstructed plane? The answer to this fundamental question is only known analytically for a few planar mobile robots: the Dubins and Reeds-Shepp steered cars, the differential drive, and a particular omnidirectional robot. This paper explores the optimal trajectories for a general parameterized model of a mobile robot that includes each previously-studied vehicle as a special case. The model also allows characterization of the optimal trajectories for several other mobile robot designs for which the optimal trajectories have not been previously explored. The paper applies Pontryagin's Maximum Principle to the generalized robot to find necessary conditions that optimal trajectories must satisfy, and gives geometric interpretations of the conditions. We also present an algorithm that generates and classifies all optimal trajectories for a given design.

Abstract

This note describes the features and implementation issues of WebProp, a web-based interface for evaluating ab initio quality one-electron properties. The interface code is written in HTML and Python, while the backend is handled using Python and our indigenously developed code INDPROP for property evaluation. A novel feature of this setup is that it provides a simple interface for computing first principle one-electron properties of small to medium sized molecules. To facilitate computation of otherwise expensive calculations on large molecular systems, we employ the Molecular Tailoring Approach (MTA) developed in our laboratory to obtain the density matrix (DM). This DM is then employed for computing the one-electron properties of these systems. The backend transparently handles jobs submitted by the user and runs them either on a single machine or over a grid of compute nodes. The results of the calculations, which include the summary and the files necessary for visualization of one-electron properties, are e-mailed to the user. The user can either directly use the data or visualize it using visualization tools such as UNIVIS-2000 or Drishti.

Abstract

Objective: The authors’ goal was to study psychiatric morbidity after a natural disaster in rural India. Method: As members ofa volunteer medical team assigned to 23 households in three villages in India affected by an earthquake, the authors examined the results of semistructured interviews used to interview all of the adults (older than 14 years) in these households (N=56). DSM-III-R diagnoses were assigned on the basis ofthese interviews, and nonparametric tests were applied to comparisons of subjects who were or were not given a psychiatric diagnosis. Results: Thirty-three (59%) of the subjects received a psychiatric diagnosis; the most common diagnoses were posttraumatic stress disorder (1 3 subjects [23 %]) and major depression (1 2 subjects [2 1 %j). Psychiatric morbidity was associated with female sex, destruction of house, and destruction of possessions. Conclusions: Attention to the mental health needs of disaster survivors in third world countries is indicated. (Am J Psychiatry 1996; 153:556-558)

In this work, we describe a novel platform for quantifying surgical suturing skill. Forces and user movements are recorded using sensors during suturing maneuvers performed on a suture patch.
