Abstract

The Dome Fuji Project is a comprehensive study of present and past glaeiological/climatological features of the Antarctic ice sheet in east Dronning Maud Land. Field observations on a 100U km traverse route from the coast to Dome Fuji slum changes in various glaciological parameters with surface elevation and distance from the coast. Deep ice-core drilling at Dome Fuji was started in August 1995 and reached a depth of 2503.52 m in December 1996. in situ core analyses revealed 25 visible tephra layers and a number of distinct cloudy bands in the ice.

Abstract

In order to improve the strain/stress characteristics of the critical current I_c, the availability of Nb matrix as well as the external CuNb reinforcing stabilizer to bronze processed Nb_3Sn multifilamentary superconducting wires has been examined up to the magnetic field of 14T and at a temperature of 4.2K. Although the axial tensile strain sensitivity of I_c does not change, the strain for peak I_c as well as the reversible strain limit increase in the wire with CuNb reinforcing stabilizer. Furthermore, the transverse compressive stress sensitivity of I_c decreases and the reversible stress limit increases. Although critical current density is not high, the Nb matrix Nb_3Sn wire shows higher tolerance to stress/strain. Correlation between axial strain effect and transverse compressive stress effect is briefly discussed.

Abstract

The type of the Electron String Ion Sources (ESIS) is considered to be the appropriate one to produce pulsed C4+ and C6+ ion beams for cancer therapy accelerators. In fact, the new test ESIS Krion-6T already now provides more than 1010 C4+ ions per pulse and about 5 × 109 C6+ ions per pulse. Such ion sources could be suitable to apply at synchrotrons. It has also been found that Krion-6T can provide more than 1011 C6+ ions per second at the 100 Hz repetition rate, and the repetition rate can be increased at the same or larger ion output per second. This makes ESIS applicable at cyclotrons as well. ESIS can be also a suitable type of ion source to produce the 11C radioactive ion beams. A specialized cryogenic cell was experimentally tested at the Krion-2M ESIS for pulse injection of gaseous species into the electron string. It has been shown in experiments with stable methane that the total conversion efficiency of methane molecules to C4+ ions reached 5% ÷ 10%. For cancer therapy with simultaneous irradiation and precise dose control (positron emission tomography) by means of 11C, transporting to the tumor with the primary accelerated 11C4+ beam, this efficiency is preliminarily considered to be large enough to produce the 11C4+ beam from radioactive methane and to inject this beam into synchrotrons.

Abstract

Continuing to engage in society is one of the best ways to compensate for much loss in old age. It is important to find a way of social participation other than job, considering for retired life. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors facilitating to social participation from demographic, social and psychological views. A nationally representative interview survey was administered of 6000 people (55-64 years old) in Japan in 1999 and people who had had worked over the age of 45 were analyzed. Logistic regression analyses were conducted for four groups; working x not working and male x female. The hypotheses are the people with richer resources, not only SES but also psychological and social resource, participates more. Healthier, married people with large network are more active. Rurality and higher self-efficacy facilitates males to engage in activity. Income level had no effect. For male, it is suggested that high psychological resource and richer network facilitates social participation notwithstanding SES. For female, SES and self-efficacy has little power to social participation. However, it is a somewhat ironical that not social participation in company-related group but in not company-related group has positive effect on well-being in spite of importance of the company to Japanese.

Abstract

A new singly charged ion source using electron impact ionization has been developed to realize an isotope separation on-line system for simultaneous positron emission tomography imaging and heavy-ion cancer therapy using radioactive 11C ion beams. Low-energy electron beams are used in the electron impact ion source to produce singly charged ions. Ionization efficiency was calculated in order to decide the geometric parameters of the ion source and to determine the required electron emission current for obtaining high ionization efficiency. Based on these considerations, the singly charged ion source was designed and fabricated. In testing, the fabricated ion source was found to have favorable performance as a singly charged ion source. Abstract

A 11C molecular production/separation system (CMPS) has been developed as part of an isotope separation on line system for simultaneous positron emission tomography imaging and heavy-ion cancer therapy using radioactive 11C ion beams. In the ISOL system, 11CH4 molecules will be produced by proton irradiation and separated from residual air impurities and impurities produced during the irradiation. The CMPS includes two cryogenic traps to separate specific molecules selectively from impurities by using vapor pressure differences among the molecular species. To investigate the fundamental performance of the CMPS, we performed separation experiments with non-radioactive 12CH4 gases, which can simulate the chemical characteristics of 11CH4 gases. We investigated the separation of CH4 molecules from impurities, which will be present as residual gases and are expected to be difficult to separate because the vapor pressure of air molecules is close to that of CH4. We determined the collection/separation efficiencies of the CMPS for various amounts of air impurities and found desirable operating conditions for the CMPS to be used as a molecular separation device in our ISOL system.
