O Delta do Rio Jacuí é impactado por atividades industriais, urbanas e agrícolas. Neste contexto, o objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a presença de metais e a citogenotoxicidade da água em dois pontos do Delta do Jacuí. Amostras de água foram coletadas, em dois períodos diferentes, em dois pontos localizados na Ilha do Pavão. Os metais analisados foram alumínio, cádmio, chumbo, cobre, cromo total, manganês, níquel e zinco. A citogenotoxicidade foi avaliada em células de raízes de Allium cepa, após exposição dos bulbos às amostras de água e ao controle negativo, por 48h. Os metais detectados foram alumínio e cádmio em concentrações acima do limite e zinco em acordo com a legislação. Índice mitótico e frequência de micronúcleos nas células de cebola não apresentaram diferenças significativas entre os tratamentos. Foi observado aumento significativo na frequência de anormalidades cromossômicas nas cebolas expostas a uma das amostras de água. Os resultados sugerem contaminação permanente da água por alumínio, variação temporal para cádmio e variação espacial para zinco, bem como variação espaço-temporal na contaminação genotóxica da água do Delta do Jacuí na região da Ilha do Pavão. Background: Older individuals tend to include less physical activity in their routine and are more prone to chronic diseases and severe medical complications, making them the most burdened group that is losing years of life due to pandemic-related premature mortality.This research aimed to assess the lifestyle factors that affect the COVID-19 course among patients ≥ 65 years old. Methods: The study included 568 convalescents (64.1% women and 35.9% men) with persistent clinical symptoms after isolation. The mean age was 70.41 ± 4.64 years (minimum: 65 years; maximum: 89 years). The patients completed the questionnaire during their in-person visit to the medical center. The survey included questions regarding their health status when suffering from COVID-19, basic sociodemographic data, and medical history concerning chronic conditions and lifestyle. Orliki, czyli ogólnodostępne kompleksy boisk ze sztuczną nawierzchnią, przeznaczone przede wszystkim dla dzieci i młodzieży, to obiekty, które pełnią zróżnicowane funkcje (m.in. edukacyjne, rekreacyjne, sportowe). W przestrzeni miejskiej rola orlików jest szczególna, istotne jest ich właściwe wykorzystanie, gdyż są one komplementarne lub konkurencyjne wobec innych obiektów sportowych i rekreacyjnych. Celem artykułu jest analiza funkcjonowania orlików w Częstochowie ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wpływu różnorodnych form dostępności oraz zagospodarowania na możliwości ich użytkowania. Przeprowadzone badania jakościowe, w tym inwentaryzacja, wywiady eksperckie, obserwacja czynna i bierna, umożliwiły także ocenę zależności między podejmowanymi aktywnościami a stanem obiektów w 2022 r. oraz zidentyfikowanie problemów związanych z ich utrzymaniem. W wyniku wykonanych analiz autorzy zaproponowali obszary w Częstochowie, które potencjalnie mogą zostać zagospodarowane na cele rozwoju infrastruktury sportowo-rekreacyjnej, oraz wskazali możliwości zmian w zarządzaniu obiektami, które mogą przyczynić się do optymalizacji ich wykorzystania i utrzymania w dobrym stanie.

Abstract Background The use of doxorubicin is associated with an increased risk of acute and long-term cardiomyopathy. Despite the constantly growing number of cancer survivors, little is known about the transcriptional mechanisms which progress in the time leading to a severe cardiac outcome. It is also unclear whether long-term transcriptomic alterations related to doxorubicin use are similar to transcriptomic patterns present in patients suffering from other cardiomyopathies. Methods We have sequenced miRNA from total plasma and extracellular vesicles (EVs) from 66 acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survivors and 61 healthy controls (254 samples in total). We then analyzed processes regulated by differentially expressed circulating miRNAs and cross-validated results with the data of patients with clinically manifested cardiomyopathies. Results We found that especially miRNAs contained within EVs may be informative in terms of cardiomyopathy development and may regulate pathways related to neurotrophin signaling, transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) or epidermal growth factor receptors (ErbB). We identified vesicular miR-144-3p and miR-423-3p as the most variable between groups and significantly correlated with echocardiographic parameters and, respectively, for plasma: let-7g-5p and miR-16-2-3p. Moreover, vesicular miR-144-3p correlates with the highest number of echocardiographic parameters and is differentially expressed in the circulation of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy. We also found that distribution of particular miRNAs between of plasma and EVs (proportion between compartments) e.g., miR-184 in ALL, is altered, suggesting changes within secretory and miRNA sorting mechanisms. Conclusions Our results show that transcriptomic changes resulting from doxorubicin induced myocardial injury are reflected in circulating miRNA levels and precede development of the late onset cardiomyopathy phenotype. Among miRNAs related to cardiac function, we found vesicular miR-144-3p and miR-423-3p, as well as let-7g-5p and miR-16-2-3p contained in the total plasma. Selection of source for such studies (plasma or EVs) is of critical importance, as distribution of some miRNA between plasma and EVs is altered in ALL survivors, in comparison to healthy people, which suggests that doxorubicin-induced changes include miRNA sorting and export to extracellular space.

Environmental changes related to global warming are both a threat to cold-water fishes and simultaneously create favourable conditions for the spread of eurythermic or warm-water species. In both cases, it is necessary to develop conservation strategies supported by precise ecological data, including thermal requirements. In this study, we determined the upper thermal tolerance thresholds and the critical maxima for three small, non-commercial Eurasian freshwater fish species; i.e. lake minnow Eupallasella (=Rhynchocypris) percnurus, sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus and topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva using the Critical Thermal Method at different acclimation temperatures, i.e. 18, 23, 28, and 33°C (highest treatment for topmouth gudgeon only). We hypothesized that lake minnow would have the lowest thermal tolerance and the topmouth gudgeon the highest. The response to temperature rise and the upper thermal limits were species-specific and correlated with the acclimation temperature, but not with fish length. Sunbleak showed the lowest thermal tolerance, though at 28°C both E. percnurus and L. delineatus reached a similar critical thermal limit. Topmouth gudgeon showed distinctly higher upper thresholds of thermal tolerance and at the highest acclimation temperature the critical upper limit for the species was close to 42°C. The results obtained for L. delineatus were surprising as we predicted that this leuciscid fish would be more tolerant of high temperatures than E. percnurus. We discuss the results in relation to the threat of extinction and the risk of species spreading beyond their natural range in the context of a warming environment.

In the context of a potential utilisation of coal resources located in the Mecsek mountain area in Southern Hungary, an assessment of groundwater pollution resulting from a potential water-borne contaminant pool remaining in in situ coal conversion reactors after site abandonment has been undertaken in the scope of the present study. The respective contaminants may be of organic and inorganic nature. A sensitivity analysis was carried out by means of numerical simulations of fluid flow as well as contaminant and heat transport including retardation to assess spatial contaminant migration. Hereby, the main uncertainties, e.g., changes in hydraulic gradient and hydraulic contributions of the complex regional and local fault systems in the study area, were assessed in a deterministic way to identify the relevant parameters. Overall 512 simulations of potential groundwater contamination scenarios within a time horizon exceeding the local post-operational monitoring period were performed, based on maximum contaminant concentrations, cumulative mass balances as well as migration distances of the contaminant plume. The simulation results show that regional faults represent the main contaminant migration pathway, and that contamination is unlikely assuming the given reference model parametrisation. However, contamination within a simulation time of 50 years is possible for specific geological conditions, e.g., if the hydraulic conductivity of the regional faults exceeds a maximum value of 1 × 10−5 m s−1. Further, the parameter data analysis shows that freshwater aquifer contamination is highly non-linear and has a bimodal distribution. The bivariate correlation coefficient heatmap shows slightly positive correlations for the pressure difference, the fault permeability and the simulation time, as well as a negative correlation for the retardation coefficient. The results of this sensitivity analysis have been integrated into a specific toolkit for risk assessment for that purpose.

Abstract Background HNF1A-MODY is a monogenic form of diabetes caused by variants in the HNF1A gene. Different HNF1A variants are associated with differences in age of disease onset, but other factors are postulated to influence this trait. Here, we searched for genetic variants influencing age of HNF1A-MODY onset. Methods Blood samples from 843 HNF1A-MODY patients from Czech Republic, France, Poland, Slovakia, the UK and the US were collected. A validation set consisted of 121 patients from the US. We conducted a genome-wide association study in 843 HNF1A-MODY patients. Samples were genotyped using Illumina Human Core arrays. The core analysis was performed using the GENESIS package in R statistical software. Kinship coefficients were estimated with the KING and PC-Relate algorithms. In the linear mixed model, we accounted for year of birth, sex, and location of the HNF1A causative variant. Results A suggestive association with age of disease onset was observed for rs2305198 (p = 2.09E−07) and rs7079157 (p = 3.96E−06) in the HK1 gene, rs2637248 in the LRMDA gene (p = 2.44E−05), and intergenic variant rs2825115 (p = 2.04E−05). Variant rs2637248 reached nominal significance (p = 0.019), while rs7079157 (p = 0.058) and rs2825115 (p = 0.068) showed suggestive association with age at diabetes onset in the validation set. Conclusions rs2637248 in the LRMDA gene is associated with age at diabetes onset in HNF1A-MODY patients.

FeO ⋅ Fe2O3 ⋅ nH2O, Fe2.95Gd0.05O4 and Fe2.9Gd0.1O4 powders were obtained by chemical precipitation from aqueous solutions. The phase composition and local environment of iron ions in gadolinium-doped iron oxide nanoparticles were studied by X-ray diffraction analysis and nuclear gamma resonance (NGR) spectroscopy. Interpretation of radiographs and NGR spectra of synthesised samples indicates the presence of a superposition of maghemite γ-Fe2O3 and iron hydroxide α-FeOOH in the samples. It was found that under the deposition of powders in the presence of gadolinium nitrate, an increase in the content of iron hydroxide α-FeOOH is observed, which disappears after annealing at 200 °C.

Measurements of the dynamical correlations between neutral and charged kaons in central Pb-Pb collisions at √SNN = 2.76 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration display anomalous behavior relative to conventional heavy-ion collision simulators. We consider other conventional statistical models, none of which can reproduce the magnitude and centrality dependence of the correlations. The data can be reproduced by coherent emission from domains which grow in number and volume with increasing centrality. We study the dynamical evolution of the strange quark condensate and show that the energy released during the expansion and cooling of the system may be sufficient to explain the anomaly.

Measurements of the microlensing optical depth and event rate toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) can be used to probe the distribution and mass function of compact objects in the direction toward that galaxy—in the Milky Way disk, the Milky Way dark matter halo, and the LMC itself. The previous measurements, based on small statistical samples of events, found that the optical depth is an order of magnitude smaller than that expected from the entire dark matter halo in the form of compact objects. However, these previous studies were not sensitive to long-duration events with Einstein timescales longer than 2.5–3 yr, which are expected from massive (10–100 M _⊙ ) and intermediate-mass (10 ^2 –10 ^5 M _⊙ ) black holes. Such events would have been missed by the previous studies and would not have been taken into account in calculations of the optical depth. Here, we present the analysis of nearly 20 yr long photometric monitoring of 78.7 million stars in the LMC by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) from 2001 through 2020. We describe the observing setup, the construction of the 20 yr OGLE data set, the methods used for searching for microlensing events in the light-curve data, and the calculation of the event detection efficiency. In total, we find 16 microlensing events (13 using an automated pipeline and three with manual searches), all of which have timescales shorter than 1 yr. We use a sample of 13 events to measure the microlensing optical depth toward the LMC τ = (0.121 ± 0.037) × 10 ^−7 and the event rate Γ = (0.74 ± 0.25) × 10 ^−7 yr ^−1 star ^−1 . These numbers are consistent with lensing by stars in the Milky Way disk and the LMC itself, and they demonstrate that massive and intermediate-mass black holes cannot comprise a significant fraction of the dark matter.

Background: Single nucleotide polymorphisms in gene encoding is the key enzyme in the folates pathway, methyltetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), which causes methylation disorders associated with coronary artery disease (CAD). We evaluated associations between methylation disorders caused by MTHFR gene polymorphisms and the blood folate concentrations (folic acid, 5-MTHF) in CAD patients. Methods: Study group: 34 patients with CAD confirmed by invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Controls: 14 patients without CAD symptoms or significant coronary artery stenosis, based on ICA or multislice computed tomography (MSCT) with coronary artery calcification (CAC) scoring. Real-time PCR genotyping was assessed using TaqMan™ probes. Folic acid and 5-MTHF concentrations in blood serum were determined using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS). Results: The c.[1286A>C];[1286A>C] MTHFR polymorphism occurred significantly more often in (CAD+) patients compared to the (CAD−) cohort and to the selected general European “CEU_GENO_PANEL” population sample. The concentration of 5-MTHF and folic acid in subgroups of CAD+ patients with methylation disorders categorized by genotypes and CAD presence (CAD+) was always lower in CAD+ subgroups compared to non-CAD individuals (CAD−). Conclusions: Further studies on a larger scale are needed to implicate the homozygous c.1286A>C MTHFR variant as CAD genetic marker and the 5-MTHF as CAD biomarker. Identification of high CAD risk using genetic and phenotypic tests can contribute to personalized therapy using an active (methylated) form of folic acid (5-MTHF) in CAD patients with MTHFR polymorphisms.

Young shoots are a completely new and rapidly growing group of foodstuffs. Also known as “vegetable confetti”, they are a useful addition to commonly consumed meals and often serve a decorative purpose, especially when paired with traditional dishes. Most users are unaware of their invaluable properties as a source of bioactive compounds and add them simply as a dish garnish. Hence, the aim of this study is to evaluate and compare selected health quality parameters of the young shoots of rare oilseed plants (Nigella sativa L., Carthamus tinctorius L., and Camelina sativa L.), which have not been studied in the literature. They are examined for proximate composition (dry matter, total protein, crude fat, ash, digestible carbohydrates, dietary fiber), antioxidative properties (vitamin C, total carotenoids, and total polyphenol content), the content of sixteen selected minerals (calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, sulphur, selenium, barium, iron, lithium, beryllium, nickel, gallium, indium, bismuth, silver) as well as antioxidant activity at two harvest dates. The ready-to-eat young shoots in the phase of intensive growth are characterized by a very high content of the examined components and antioxidant properties, which differ depending on the harvest date and plant species. Significantly higher contents of protein, fat, and some minerals have been found in the young shoots from the first harvest compared to those from the second harvest. The antioxidant properties of the young shoots generally increase with maturity. It was not possible, however, to conclusively assess which species of young shoots show the highest health quality.

Consumers’ growing awareness of healthy nutrition results in an increase in demand for the production of beverages with health-promoting properties. An example of such a product is kvass produced in the fermentation process. This research aimed to determine the impact of plant additives on the antioxidant and sensorial properties of kvass made from bread based on mountain rye flour. The bread extract was fermented at different temperatures (28 and 34 °C). Additives of 3, 5, and 10% were used in the tests, which included black chokeberry juice and infusion, sea buckthorn fruit juice and infusion, and peppermint leaf infusion. A higher fermentation temperature in the production process resulted in an improvement in the organoleptic and antioxidant properties of the tested kvasses. The highest antioxidant activity was demonstrated by kvass with the addition of 10% black chokeberry juice (0.734 µmol Trolox g−1 (ABTS), 4.90 µmol of Trolox g−1 (DPPH)), and a peppermint leaf infusion (0.773 µmol Trolox g−1 (ABTS), 4.71 µmol Trolox g−1 (DPPH)). The conditions of kvass production and the type and amount of the additive influenced the selected physicochemical parameters of the obtained kvasses. The chromatographic analysis confirmed the content of 13 phenolic compounds in kvass with the addition of black chokeberry juice, which was 1.68–1.73 mg/100 mL of the finished product with a 10% share of the additive. The 11 phenolic compounds in kvass with the addition of peppermint infusion were confirmed for 7.65–6.86 mg/100 mL of the finished product with 10% of the additive. Kvass enriched with additives from black chokeberry fruit and peppermint leaves may be a promising new category of functional beverages with health-promoting properties resulting from the content of polyphenol compounds. It could be a better base for enrichment with raw materials that are richer in these compounds than pasteurized products.

Carnivorous plants can survive in poor habitats because they have the ability to attract, capture, and digest prey and absorb animal nutrients using modified organs that are equipped with glands. These glands have terminal cells with permeable cuticles. Cuticular discontinuities allow both secretion and endocytosis. In Drosophyllum lusitanicum, these emergences have glandular cells with cuticular discontinuities in the form of cuticular gaps. In this study, we determined whether these specific cuticular discontinuities were permeable enough to antibodies to show the occurrence of the cell wall polymers in the glands. Scanning transmission electron microscopy was used to show the structure of the cuticle. Fluorescence microscopy revealed the localization of the carbohydrate epitopes that are associated with the major cell wall polysaccharides and glycoproteins. We showed that Drosophyllum leaf epidermal cells have a continuous and well-developed cuticle, which helps the plant inhibit water loss and live in a dry environment. The cuticular gaps only partially allow us to study the composition of cell walls in the glands of Drosophyllum. We recoded arabinogalactan proteins, some homogalacturonans, and hemicelluloses. However, antibody penetration was only limited to the cell wall surface. The localization of the wall components in the cell wall ingrowths was missing. The use of enzymatic digestion improves the labeling of hemicelluloses in Drosophyllum glands.

The Sn-W ore deposits in the Krupka surroundings are associated with greisens, which occur in the upper parts of Late Variscan granitoid intrusions. Fluid inclusions were studied in samples of quartz, cassiterite, apatite, fluorite, and topaz in greisenized granites, greisens, and hydrothermal veins with Sn-W mineralization. The greisenization process took place at temperatures 370–490 °C and pressures 155–371 bars, and associated fluids had predominantly low salinity and a low gas (CO2, N2 and CH4) content. The post-greisenization stage was connected with the formation of (i) low-salinity (0–8 wt. % NaCl eq.) fluid inclusions with homogenization temperatures 35 wt. % NaCl eq.) fluid inclusions with homogenization temperatures 140–370 °C, often containing trapped crystals of quartz, topaz, and sulfides, or daughter crystals of salts and carbonates, which were identified by microthermometric measurements, electron microprobe analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. Analyses of fluid inclusion leachates have shown that Na and Ca chlorides predominate in fluids. According to hydrogen stable isotopes, the source of greisenizing and post-greisenizing fluids was not only magmatogenic but also meteoric water or fluids derived from sedimentary rocks.

Phytoremediation supported by bioaugmentation is a promising method considered for cleaning up areas polluted with petroleum hydrocarbons. In this study, phytoremediation was carried out using Echinacea purpurea as a phytoremediant on two types of soil: Soil DW—aged soil taken from an excavation pit, Soil OS—soil taken from an oil spill area. The tests for each soil were carried out in six test systems (non-inoculation, inoculation with the B1 microbial consortium, inoculation with the B2 microbial consortium, inoculation with the B1 microbial consortium with the addition of γ-PGA (γ-poly glutamic acid), inoculation with the B2 microbial consortium with the addition of γ-PGA and inoculation with the γ-PGA solution) for 6 months. The effectiveness of the remediation treatments used was assessed based on chromatographic analyses of soil and plant material (roots, shoots) and toxicological analyses using four types of toxicological tests (PhytotoxkitTM (MicroBioTests Inc., Gent, Belgium), OstracodtoxkitTM (MicroBioTests Inc., Gent, Belgium), Microtox® Solid Phase Test (Modern Water Inc., New Castle, DE, USA), MARA (NCIMB Ltd., Aberdeen, UK)). The research conducted showed that the most effective method of bioremediation of soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons was phytoremediation supported by bioaugmentation with the microbial consortium B2 with γ-PGA, which allowed for reducing the concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the tested soils by 53.98% and 49.54% (Soil DW-5) and 60.47% and 37.55% (Soil OS-5), respectively. In turn, the lowest bioremediation efficiency was recorded in non-inoculated systems, for which the concentration of TPHs and PAHs at the end of the study decreased by 18.40% and 16.14% (Soil DW-1) and 21.87% and 18.20% (Soil OS-1), respectively. The results of toxicological analyses confirmed the relationship between the concentration of TPHs and PAHs in the soil and its toxicity level.

One of the best sources of antioxidant and health-promoting bioactive substances is the fruit of V. corymbosum. A potent oxidizing agent, ozone (O3), can effectively eliminate bacteria. The application of ozone gas to V. corymbosum fruit during storage had a favorable impact on the fruit’s phenolic component and sugar content in the current investigation. After 7 days of storage, phenolic content in all highbush blueberry cultivars and clones tested increased on average by 28.60%, including anthocyanins by 34%. After 14 days of storage, an average increase of 16.50% in phenolic compounds was observed, including a 20.53% increase in anthocyanins. Among all the tested varieties, clone BOR-21 treated with a dose of 0.01 mL·L−1 ozone for 30 min after 14 days had the highest TPC—143.73 mg·100 g−1 f.w. The sugar content of berries treated with a dose of 0.01 mL·L−1 ozone for 30 min, on day 7 and day 14 of storage increased by 9.2% and 6.3%, respectively. On day 7, the highest amount of total sugar (22.74 g·100 g−1) was observed in Duke cultivar after being exposed to 0.01 mL·L−1 ozone for 15 min. The ozonation treatments enhanced the fruit’s saturation with nutrients, which raises the fruit’s value as food.

Utricularia (bladderworts) are carnivorous plants. They produce small hollow vesicles, which function as suction traps that work underwater and capture fine organisms. Inside the traps, there are numerous glandular trichomes (quadrifids), which take part in the secretion of digestive enzymes, the resorption of released nutrients, and likely the pumping out of water. Due to the extreme specialization of quadrifids, they are an interesting model for studying the cell walls. This aim of the study was to fill in the gap in the literature concerning the immunocytochemistry of quadrifids in the major cell wall polysaccharides and glycoproteins. To do this, the localization of the cell wall components in the quadrifids was performed using whole-mount immunolabeled Utricularia traps. It was observed that only parts (arms) of the terminal cells had enough discontinuous cuticle to be permeable to antibodies. There were different patterns of the cell wall components in the arms of the terminal cells of the quadrifids. The cell walls of the arms were especially rich in low-methyl-esterified homogalacturonan. Moreover, various arabinogalactan proteins also occurred. Cell walls in glandular cells of quadrifids were rich in low-methyl-esterified homogalacturonan; in contrast, in the aquatic carnivorous plant Aldrovanda vesiculosa, cell walls in the glandular cells of digestive glands were poor in low-methyl-esterified homogalacturonan. Arabinogalactan proteins were found in the cell walls of trap gland cells in all studied carnivorous plants: Utricularia, and members of Droseraceae and Drosophyllaceae.

This study investigated the in vitro antioxidant and biological properties of ethanol extracts obtained from the fruits of the highbush cranberry. The produced extracts exhibited a high content of polyphenols (1041.9 mg 100 g d.m.−1) and a high antioxidant activity (2271.2 mg TE g 100 d.m.−1 using the DPPH method, 1781.5 mg TE g 100 d.m.−1 using the ABTS method), as well as a substantial amount of vitamin C (418.2 mg 100 g d.m.−1). These extracts also demonstrated significant in vitro biological activity. Studies conducted on the Saccharomyces cerevisiae cellular model revealed the strong antioxidant effects of the extract, attributed to a significant reduction in the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the cells, confirming the utility of the extracts in mitigating oxidative stress. Moreover, inhibitory properties were demonstrated against factors activating metabolic processes characteristic of inflammatory conditions. It was observed that the cranberry extract inhibits the activity of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) non-selectively. Additionally, the extract was found to be a highly active inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), potentially suggesting the applicability of this extract in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease.

The aim of this study was to assess the species composition and structure of zooplankton and fish communities in lakes with similar ecological conditions that are connected by periodic streams. This was done by assessing the relative importance of local biotic and abiotic interactions associated with the species composition and structure of the zooplankton and fish communities. The study was conducted in three small, soft water lobelia lakes located in the source area of the Brda River, which were characterized by low trophic statuses and similar depths. A total of 15 Rotifera taxa, 18 Cladocera taxa, and nine Copepoda taxa were identified in the lakes analyzed. The lake zooplankton communities differed in species richness, total density, and biomass, while the Shannon–Wiener diversity indexes of the zooplankton communities were similar. Of the three lakes analyzed, the faunal similarity index was the highest in Lake Smołowe. Comparisons of the three lakes indicated there was greater similarity in the pelagic (42.7–50.0%) than in the littoral (20.1–26.8%) zones. The fish community of the three lakes consisted of eight species, and species richness ranged from two to eight fish species. Only perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) and pike (Esox lucius L.) were present in all three lakes. The fish groups also differed in terms of density and biodiversity indicators. Faunal similarity indicators showed significant similarity in the dominance structure of the fish communities.

Abstract Compounds containing Eu show a vast range of unique physical properties due to the interplay of electronic and magnetic properties, which can lead to a nontrivial electronic topology combined with magnetic order. We report on the growth of trigonal ( $$P\overline{3 }m1$$ P 3 ¯ m 1 space group) EuZn2As2 single crystals and on the studies of their structural, electronic and magnetic properties. A range of experimental techniques was applied including X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and Mössbauer spectroscopy in the study. We found that Eu has solely a 2+ valence state and its magnetic moments below T N = 19.2 K form a canted antiferromagnetic structure, tilted from the basal plane.

Abstract Background Oxytocin (OXT) is a neuropeptide and hormone involved in emotional functioning and also seems to play a role in moderating the stress response. Both preclinical and clinical studies point to an increased methylation status of the Oxytocin receptor (OXTR) promoter region with concomitant deficits in social, cognitive and emotional functioning. We hypothesize that methylation levels (%) of the oxytocin receptor promoter region correlate with the severity of depression symptoms and/or with the severity of childhood trauma within this present sample of affective disorder patients. Methodology Eight hundred forty six (846) affective disorder patients of Central European origin were recruited at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the Medical University Vienna, the Karl Landsteiner University for Health and Science and Zentren für seelische Gesundheit, BBRZ-Med Leopoldau. Psychiatric assessment included a semi-structured diagnostic interview (Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry), the Hamilton Depression Scale and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Concomitantly DNA samples of peripheral blood cells were collected for Multiplexed and Sensitive DNA Methylation Testing. Results Our data suggests a positive but not significant association between OXTR promoter Exons 1–3 methylation levels and severity of depression symptoms as well as severity of emotional neglect in affective disorder patients and no association with childhood trauma. Conclusions Our findings contribute to elucidate the role of OXTR in affective disorders, but further longitudinal studies in particular are necessary to broaden the current state of knowledge.
