Abstract

Internal combustion Rankine cycle (ICRC) concept implements oxy-fuel combustion, direct water injection (DWI), and waster heat recovery (WHR) into traditional Otto or diesel cycle to realize high thermal efficiency and low emission powertrain. In order to support ICRC realization, this paper is dedicated to investigate the feasibility of implementing oxy-fuel combustion into diffusion combustion which provides fundamental information for future compression ignition (CI)-ICRC engine. The prototype oxy-fuel diffusion combustion engine test bench is established based on a retrofitted diesel engine, and the O2/CO2 mixture intake system, high-pressure common rail fuel injection system, and high-performance electronic controller are designed and installed within engine test bench to investigate the combustion and emission characteristics under different intake oxygen fractions (OF), fuel injection durations, and fuel injection timing. The optimum intake OF and fuel injection strategies are acquired within the selected experimental conditions, a 41.1% brake thermal efficiency (BTE), and 1.2% coefficient of variation (CoV) is achieved utilizing 55% intake OF, 0.7 ms fuel injection duration and 352 °CA (after exchange top dead center (TDC)) fuel injection timing. The oxy-fuel diffusion combustion proved to be a feasible solution for simultaneously reduction in NOX and particulate emissions, and NOX emissions lower than 90 × 10−6 with particulate matters (PM) around 0.1 filter smoke number (FSN) is observed during engine bench testing. The result of this study provides fundamental information for future CI-ICRC prototype engine establishment and optimization, which also could be utilized as reference guidance for potential industrialization of internal combustion engine (ICE) with oxy-fuel combustion mode.

Abstract

A novel Cu(II) coordination polymer [Cu(HL)(4,4′-bpy)]n (4,4′-bpy = 4,4′-bipyridine) 1 based on a semi-rigid tricarboxylate, 5-(3,4-dicarboxylphenoxy) nicotinic acid (H3L) has been hydrothermally synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that, in compound 1, H3L ligands first extend the metal ions into a 2-D layer. Then the 4,4′-bpy molecules functioned as bidentate bridge, strutting the 2-D layers into a 3-D open network with a (63) (69·8) topology. Notably, 1-D channels of ca. 6.5 × 10.5 A2 are observed in 1, but due to 2-fold interpenetration phenomenon, these channels become small or disappear. Fluorescent spectra indicate 1 can act as a muti-chemosensor for detection of acetylacetone (Hacac), Cr2O72− and CrO42− in aqueous solution with high selectivity and sensitivity. The mechanism of luminescent sensing Hacac and Cr(VI) were also investigated in detail.

Abstract

Gamma/neutron dual detection has occupied significant territory in the field of homeland security and nuclear energy development. Cs2LiLaBr6 (CLLB) has shown both neutron/gamma dual-mode detection capability and excellent scintillation properties. Herein, we explored the Cs2LaBr5-LiBr phase diagram through powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests of synthesized polycrystalline materials. The Cs2LaBr5-rich side of the phase diagram is similar to a binary peritectic phase diagram, where the peritectic line (447 °C) extends to a LiBr content of 61%. The LiBr-rich side of the phase diagram resembles a binary eutectic phase diagram, where the eutectic point (395 °C) is located at 80% LiBr concentration. Guided by the phase diagram, CLLB ingots were designed to grow from the LiBr-rich side with different concentrations of LiBr. The scintillator properties of CLLB crystals were found to be deteriorated by the increasing defects with elevated LiBr contents. A concentration of LiBr around 55% was a preference for the growth of high-quality CLLB. A better understanding of the Cs2LaBr5-LiBr phase diagram benefits the growth of CLLB crystals and provides considerations for other halide double perovskites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A new coordination polymer (CP), [Co(μ3-HL)(μ-bpp)(H2O)]n 1 (H3L = 5-(3,4-dicarboxylphenoxy) nicotinic acid, bpp = 1,2-bis (4-pyridyl) propane)) has been successfully prepared under solvothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrates that compound 1 possesses a 2-D layer structure with (3-c)(4-c) 2-nodal (42ˑ63ˑ8) (42ˑ6) topology, which then self-assembles into a final 3-D supramolecular network via the interlayer π⋯π interactions. Magnetic studies indicate that there exist weak-anti-ferromagnetic exchange interactions between CoII ions. More importantly, compound 1 represents a rare example of a fluorescent CP sensor which can dually probe ascorbic acid (AA) and acetylacetone (acac) in aqueous solution. The probable sensing mechanism of both analytes has also been discussed in this paper.

Abstract

A series of amphiphilic hybrid gels were prepared by the copolymerization of N -isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) and lauryl methacrylate (LMA). The structures, thermal properties, mechanical strengths, morphologies and the loading ability of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs of the obtained P(NIPAM-co-LMA) hybrid gels were studied in detail using infrared spectrometer (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). The increase of LMA percentage resulted to the decrease of the phase change temperature, enthalpy and softening point of the hybrid gel. Further, the surface morphologies of the hybrid gel also changed with different LMA percentage. The water and oil served as the model of hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs were adopted in the absorption experiments; meanwhile, the temperature responsive behavior was also investigated. The results showed that these hybrid gels were amphiphilic, i.e. both hydrophilic and oleophilic. The water and oil absorption capabilities of the hybrid gel could be adjusted by controlling both the components of the gel and the environment temperature. This new kind of hybrid gel can serve as drug carriers for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic species and may be effectively used in artificial intelligence drug release.
