The electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxial LaNiO3/LaAlO3 superlattices can be tuned by layer thickness and substrate-induced strain. Here, we report on direct measurements of the k-space-resolved electronic structure of buried nickelate layers in superlattices under compressive strain by soft x-ray photoemission. After disentangling strong extrinsic contributions to the angle-dependent signal caused by photoelectron diffraction, we are able to extract Fermi surface information from our data. We find that with decreasing LaNiO3 thickness down to two unit cells (2 uc) quasiparticle coherence becomes strongly reduced, in accord with the dimension-induced metal-to-insulator transition seen in transport measurements. Nonetheless, on top of a strongly incoherent background a residual Fermi surface can be identified in the 2 uc superlattice whose nesting properties are consistent with the spin-density wave (SDW) instability recently reported. The overall behavior of the Ni 3d spectra and the absence of a complete gap opening indicate that the SDW phase is dominated by strong order parameter fluctuations., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Evidence of a heavy neutrino, $\nu_H$, in the $K^+\to\mu^+\nu_H$ decays was sought using the E949 experimental data with an exposure of $1.70\times 10^{12}$ stopped kaons. With the major background from the radiative $K^+\to\mu^+\nu_\mu\gamma$ decay understood and suppressed, upper limits (90% C.L.) on the neutrino mixing matrix element between muon and heavy neutrino, $|U_{\mu H}|^2$, were set at the level of $10^{-7}$ to $10^{-9}$ for the heavy neutrino mass region 175 to 300 MeV/$c^2$., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures; accepted by Physical Review D

We have investigated the impact of Ru substitution on the multi-band electronic structure of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The ARPES results exhibit suppression of the $xy$ Fermi surface and the spectral broadening near the zone boundaries, which can be associated with the lattice disorder introduced by the Ru substitution. The degeneracy of the Fe 3$d$ $yz$/$zx$ bands at the zone center, which is broken in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$, is partly recovered with the Ru substitution, indicating coexistence of nematic and non-nematic electronic states., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 shows that the Fe 3d electrons in the FeAs layer form the hole-like Fermi pocket at the zone center and the electron-like Fermi pockets at the zone corners as commonly seen in various Fe-based superconductors. The FeAs layer is heavily electron doped and has relatively good two dimensionality. On the other hand, the Ir 5d electrons are metallic and glassy probably due to atomic disorder related to the Ir 5d orbital instability. Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 exhibits a unique electronic state where the Bloch electrons in the FeAs layer coexist with the glassy electrons in the Ir4As8 layer., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The electronic and magnetic properties of Fe atoms in the ferromagnetic semiconductor (In,Fe)As codoped with Be have been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Fe $L_{2,3}$ edge. The XAS and XMCD spectra showed simple spectral line shapes similar to Fe metal, but the ratio of the orbital and spin magnetic moments ($M_\mathrm{orb}$/$M_\mathrm{spin}$) estimated using the XMCD sum rules was significantly larger than that of Fe metal, indicating a significant orbital moment of Fe $3d$ electrons in (In,Fe)As:Be. The positive value of $M_\mathrm{orb}$/$M_\mathrm{spin}$ implies that the Fe $3d$ shell is more than half-filled, which arises from the hybridization of the Fe$^{3+}$ ($d^5$) state with the charge-transfer $d^6\underline{L}$ states, where $\underline{L}$ is a ligand hole in the host valence band. The spatial resolution along the pad-row direction was measured with a GEM-based TPC prototype for the future linear collider experiment in order to understand its performance for tracks with finite projected angles with respect to the pad-row normal. The degradation of the resolution due to the angular pad effect was confirmed to be consistent with the prediction of a simple calculation taking into account the cluster-size distribution and the avalanche fluctuation., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

The purpose of ILD-TPC Asia group is realization of high precision Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) as a central tracker in International Linear Collider (ILC). We have been studying the many R&D items to build the real detector as a member of LCTPC collaboration. Using the Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys data in the COSMOS field, we systematically searched clumpy galaxies at 0.2 10^9.5 Msun decreases with time from ~0.35 at 0.8 10^10.5 Msun at each redshift. On the other hand, the fraction of clumpy galaxies increases with increasing both SFR and SSFR in all the redshift ranges we investigated. In particular, we found that the SSFR dependences of the fractions are similar among galaxies with different stellar masses, and the fraction at a given SSFR does not depend on the stellar mass in each redshift bin. The evolution of the fraction of clumpy galaxies from z~0.9 to z~0.3 seems to be explained by such SSFR dependence of the fraction and the evolution of SSFRs of star-forming galaxies. The fraction at a given SSFR also appears to decrease with time, but this can be due to the effect of the morphological K-correction. We suggest that these results are understood by the gravitational fragmentation model for the formation of giant clumps in disk galaxies, where the gas mass fraction is a crucial parameter., Comment: 14 Pages, 13 Figures, 1 Table, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The results of a search for hydrogen-like atoms consisting of $\pi^{\mp}K^{\pm}$ mesons are presented. Evidence for $\pi K$ atom production by 24 GeV/c protons from CERN PS interacting with a nickel target has been seen in terms of characteristic $\pi K$ pairs from their breakup in the same target ($178 \pm 49$) and from Coulomb final state interaction ($653 \pm 42$). Using these results the analysis yields a first value for the $\pi K$ atom lifetime of $\tau=(2.5_{-1.8}^{+3.0})$ fs and a first model-independent measurement of the S-wave isospin-odd $\pi K$ scattering length $\left|a_0^-\right|=\frac{1}{3}\left|a_{1/2}-a_{3/2}\right|= \left(0.11_{-0.04}^{+0.09} \right)M_{\pi}^{-1}$ ($a_I$ for isospin $I$)., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

We have studied the nature of the three-dimensional multi-band electronic structure in the twodimensional triangular lattice Ir1-xPtxTe2 (x=0.05) superconductor using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and band structure calculation. ARPES results clearly show a cylindrical (almost two-dimensional) Fermi surface around the zone center. Near the zone boundary, the cylindrical Fermi surface is truncated into several pieces in a complicated manner with strong three-dimensionality. The XPS result and the band structure calculation indicate that the strong Te 5p-Te 5p hybridization between the IrTe2 triangular lattice layers is responsible for the three-dimensionality of the Fermi surfaces and the intervening of the Fermi surfaces observed by ARPES., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In order to understand nature of building blocks of galaxies in the early universe, we investigate "genuine irregular galaxies (GIGs)" in the nearby universe. Here, GIGs are defined as isolated galaxies without regular structures (spheroid, bulge, disk, bar, spiral arm, and nucleus). Using the results of two excellent studies on galaxy morphology based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we obtain a sample of 66 irregular galaxies. We carry out new classification of them into GIGs and non-GIGs which have regular structure or show evidence for galaxy interaction, by using the SDSS Data Release 10 images. We then find that a half of these irregular galaxies (33/66) are GIGs and obtain an unambiguous sample of 33 GIGs for the first time. We discuss their observational properties by comparing them with those of elliptical, S0, spiral galaxies, and irregular galaxies without the GIGs. We find that our GIGs have smaller sizes, lower optical luminosities, bluer rest-frame optical colors, lower surface stellar mass densities, and lower gas metallicity than normal galaxies. We report an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on a triangular lattice superconductor Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$Te$_2$ in which the Ir-Ir or Te-Te bond formation, the band Jahn-Teller effect, and the spin-orbit interaction are cooperating and competing with one another. The Fermi surfaces of the substituted system are qualitatively similar to the band structure calculations for the undistorted IrTe$_2$ with an upward chemical potential shift due to electron doping. A combination of the ARPES and the band structure calculations indicates that the Te $5p$ spin-orbit interaction removes the $p_x/p_y$ orbital degeneracy and induces $p_x \pm ip_y$ type spin-orbit coupling near the A point. The inner and outer Fermi surfaces are entangled by the Te $5p$ and Ir $5d$ spin-orbit interactions which may provide exotic superconductivity with singlet-triplet mixing., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The bulk electronic structure of NiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ is studied across the bandwidth-control Mott transition (BCMT) by soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The microscopic picture of the BCMT in this multiband non-half-filled system is revealed for the first time. We show that Se doping does not alter the Fermi surface volume. When approaching the insulating phase with decreasing Se concentration, we observed that the Fermi velocity continuously decreases. Meanwhile, the coherent quasiparticle weight continuously decreases and is transferred to higher binding energies, until it suddenly disappears across the Mott transition. In the insulating phase, there is still finite spectral weight at the Fermi energy, but it is incoherent and dispersionless due to strong correlations. Our results provide a direct observation of BCMT, and unveil its distinct characters in a multiband non-half-filled system., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The electronic structure of doped Mn in (Ga,Mn)As is studied by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). From configuration-interaction cluster-model calculations, the line shapes of the Mn $L_3$ RIXS spectra can be explained by $d$-$d$ excitations from the Mn$^{3+}$ ground state, dominated by charge-transferred states, rather than a Mn$^{2+}$ ground state. Unlike archetypical $d$-$d$ excitation, the peak widths are broader than the experimental energy resolution. We attribute the broadening to a finite lifetime of the $d$-$d$ excitations, which decay rapidly to electron-hole pairs in the host valence and conduction bands through hybridization of the Mn $3d$ orbital with the ligand band., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The novel electronic properties emerging at interfaces between transition metal oxides, and in particular the discovery of conductivity in heterostructures composed of LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO) band insulators, have generated new challenges and opportunities in condensed matter physics. Although the interface conductivity is stabilized when LAO matches or exceeds a critical thickness of 4 unit cells (u.c.), other phenomena such as a universal metallic state found on the bare surface of STO single crystals and persistent photon-triggered conductivity in otherwise insulating STO-based interfaces raise important questions about the role of the LAO overlayer and the possible relations between vacuum/STO and LAO/STO interfaces. Here, we study how the metallic STO surface state evolves using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in situ prepared samples complemented by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) during the growth of a crystalline LAO overlayer. In all the studied samples, the character of the conduction bands, their carrier densities, the Ti3+ crystal field, and the response to photon irradiation bear strong similarities. Nevertheless, we report here that studied LAO/STO interfaces exhibit an instability toward an apparent 2 x 1 folding of the Fermi surface at and above 4 u.c. thickness threshold, which distinguishes these heterostructures from bare STO and sub-critical-thickness LAO/STO.

During the course of our Lyman continuum imaging survey, we found that the spectroscopically confirmed Lya emitter LAE 221724+001716 at z = 3.10 in the SSA 22 field shows strong Lyman continuum emission (lambda_rest ~ 900 A) that escapes from this galaxy. However, another recent spectroscopic survey revealed that the supposed Lyman continuum emission could arise from a foreground galaxy at z = 1.76 if the emission line newly detected from the galaxy at lambda_obs ~ 3360 A is Lya. If this is the case, as the angular separation between these two galaxies is very small (~ 0.6"), LAE 221724+001716 at z = 3.10 could be amplified by the gravitational lensing caused by this intervening galaxy. Here we present a possible gravitational lens model for the system of LAE 221724+001716. First, we estimate the stellar mass of the intervening galaxy as Mstar ~ 3.5x10^9 Msun from its UV luminosity and ~ 3.0x10^7--2.4x10^9 Msun through the SED fitting. Then, we find that the gravitational magnification factor ranges from 1.01 to 1.16 using the so-called singular isothermal sphere model for strong lensing. While LAE 221724+001716 is the first system of an LAE-LAE lensing reported so far, the estimated magnification factor is not so significant because the stellar mass of the intervening galaxy is small., Comment: 5 pages including 3 figures and 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ on 13 Feb. 2013

We present a soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) study of the stoichiometric pnictide superconductor LaRu2P2. The observed electronic structure is in good agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. However, it is significantly different from its counterpart in high-temperature superconducting Fe-pnictides. In particular the bandwidth renormalization present in the Fe-pnictides (~2 - 3) is negligible in LaRu2P2 even though the mass enhancement is similar in both systems. Our results suggest that the superconductivity in LaRu2P2 has a different origin with respect to the iron pnictides. Finally we demonstrate that the increased probing depth of SX-ARPES, compared to the widely used ultraviolet ARPES, is essential in determining the bulk electronic structure in the experiment., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 supplemental material. The DIRAC experiment at CERN has achieved a sizeable production of $\pi^+\pi^-$ atoms and has significantly improved the precision on its lifetime determination. From a sample of 21227 atomic pairs, a 4% measurement of the S-wave $\pi\pi$ scattering length difference $|a_0-a_2| = (.0.2533^{+0.0080}_{-0.0078}|_\mathrm{stat}.{}^{+0.0078}_{-0.0073}|_\mathrm{syst})M_{\pi^+}^{-1}$ has been attained, providing an important test of Chiral Perturbation Theory., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We have studied magnetism in Ti_[1-x]Co_xO_[2-\delta] thin films with various x and \delta by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Co L_[2,3] absorption edges. The estimated ferromagnetic moment by XMCD was 0.15-0.24 \mu\beta/Co in the surface, while in the bulk it was 0.82-2.25 \mu\beta/Co, which is in the same range as the saturation magnetization of 1.0-1.5 \mu\beta/Co. Theseresults suggest that the intrinsic origin of the erromagnetism. The smaller moment of Co atom at surface is an indication of a magnetically dead layer of a few nm thick at the surface of the thin films., Comment: This Paper is accepted in J. of Phys: Conds. Argon with an admixture of CF4 is expected to be a good candidate for the gas mixture to be used for a time projection chamber (TPC) in the future linear collider experiment because of its small transverse diffusion of drift electrons especially under a strong magnetic field. In order to confirm the superiority of this gas mixture over conventional TPC gases we carried out cosmic ray tests using a GEM-based TPC operated mostly in Ar-CF4-isobutane mixtures under 0 - 1 T axial magnetic fields. The measured gas properties such as gas gain and transverse diffusion constant as well as the observed spatial resolution are presented., Comment: A supplemental material (Addendum to be published in Nucl. We have studied a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{87}Rb$ atoms under an oscillatory excitation. For a fixed frequency of excitation, we have explored how the values of amplitude and time of excitation must be combined in order to produce quantum turbulence in the condensate. Depending on the combination of these parameters different behaviors are observed in the sample. For the lowest values of time and amplitude of excitation, we observe a bending of the main axis of the cloud. Increasing the amplitude of excitation we observe an increasing number of vortices. The vortex state can evolve into the turbulent regime if the parameters of excitation are driven up to a certain set of combinations. If the value of the parameters of these combinations is exceeded, all vorticity disappears and the condensate enters into a different regime which we have identified as the granular phase. Our results are summarized in a diagram of amplitude versus time of excitation in which the different structures can be identified. The magnetic properties of Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O ($x=0.07$ and 0.10) thin films, which were homo-epitaxially grown on a ZnO(0001) substrates with varying relatively high oxygen pressure, have been investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at Co $2p$ core-level absorption edge. The line shapes of the absorption spectra are the same in all the films and indicate that the Co$^{2+}$ ions substitute for the Zn sites. The magnetic-field and temperature dependences of the XMCD intensity are consistent with the magnetization measurements, indicating that except for Co there are no additional sources for the magnetic moment, and demonstrate the coexistence of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic components in the homo-epitaxial Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin films, in contrast to the ferromagnetism in the hetero-epitaxial Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O films studied previously. The analysis of the XMCD intensities using the Curie-Weiss law reveals the presence of antiferromagnetic interaction between the paramagnetic Co ions. Missing XMCD intensities and magnetization signals indicate that most of Co ions are non-magnetic probably because they are strongly coupled antiferromagnetically with each other. Annealing in a high vacuum reduces both the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic signals. We attribute the reductions to thermal diffusion and aggregation of Co ions with antiferromagnetic nanoclusters in Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, accepted for Physical Review B

We propose methods to create fractional vortices in the cyclic state of an F = 2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate by manipulating its internal spin structure using pulsed microwave and laser fields. The stability of such vortices is studied as a function of the rotation frequency of the confining harmonic trap both in pancake and cigar shaped condensates. We find a range of parameters for which the so-called 1/3-vortex state is energetically favorable. Such fractional vortices could be created in condensates of 87Rb atoms using current experimental techniques facilitating probing of topological defects with non-Abelian statistics., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

A time projection chamber (TPC) is a strong candidate for the central tracker of the international linear collider (ILC) experiment and we have been conducting a series of cosmic ray experiments under a magnetic field up to 4 T, using a small prototype TPC with a replaceable readout device: multi-wire proportional chamber (MWPC) or gas electron multiplier (GEM). We first confirmed that the MWPC readout could not be a fall-back option of the ILC-TPC under a strong axial magnetic field of 4 T since its spatial resolution suffered severely from the so called E x B effect in the vicinity of the wire planes. The GEM readout, on the other hand, was found to be virtually free from the E x B effect as had been expected and gave the resolution determined by the transverse diffusion of the drift electrons (diffusion limited). Furthermore, GEMs allow a wider choice of gas mixtures than MWPCs. Among the gases we tried so far a mixture of Ar-CF4-isobutane, in which MWPCs could be prone to discharges, seems promising as the operating gas of the ILC-TPC because of its small diffusion constant especially under a strong magnetic field. We report the measured drift properties of this mixture including the diffusion constant as a function of the electric field and compare them with the predictions of Magboltz. We present evidence for the first observation of electromagnetically bound $\pi^\pm K^\mp$-pairs ($\pi K$-atoms) with the DIRAC experiment at the CERN-PS. The $\pi K$-atoms are produced by the 24 GeV/c proton beam in a thin Pt-target and the $\pi^\pm$ and $K^\mp$-mesons from the atom dissociation are analyzed in a two-arm magnetic spectrometer. The observed enhancement at low relative momentum corresponds to the production of 173 $\pm$ 54 $\pi K$-atoms. The mean life of $\pi K$-atoms is related to the s-wave $\pi K$-scattering lengths, the measurement of which is the goal of the experiment. From these first data we derive a lower limit for the mean life of 0.8 fs at 90% confidence level., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

We have studied the electronic structure of Zn$_{0.9}$Fe$_{0.1}$O nano-particles, which have been reported to show ferromagnetism at room temperature, by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the experimental and cluster-model calculation results, we find that Fe atoms are predominantly in the Fe$^{3+}$ ionic state with mixture of a small amount of Fe$^{2+}$ and that Fe$^{3+}$ ions are dominant in the surface region of the nano-particles. It is shown that the room temperature ferromagnetism in the Zn$_{0.9}$Fe$_{0.1}$O nano-particles is primarily originated from the antiferromagnetic coupling between unequal amounts of Fe$^{3+}$ ions occupying two sets of nonequivalent positions in the region of the XMCD probing depth of $\sim$ 2-3 nm., Comment: Single column, 12 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

Experiment E949 at Brookhaven National Laboratory has observed three new events consistent with the decay K+ => pi+,nu,nubar in the pion momentum region 140 < P_pi < 199 MeV/c in an exposure of 1.71e12 stopped kaons with an estimated total background of 0.93+-0.17(stat.)+0.32-0.24(syst.) events. This brings the total number of observed K+ => pi+,nu,nubar events to seven. Combining this observation with previous results, assuming the pion spectrum predicted by the standard model, results in a branching ratio of (1.73+1.15-1.05)e-10.
