As for mulch, the flower beds along the fence get a fresh layer of shredded bark seasonally, but Helen skips mulch - and the chemicals that can accompany it - on her vegetable beds. Helen likes interplanting cool-season lettuces and radishes, for instance, with Swiss chard, which is slower to "bolt" - or turn leggy and bitter in hot weather - for long-lasting leafy displays.
