Abstract

Weld filler alloys that exploit transformation plasticity through low austenite to martensite transformation temperatures offer an effective method of reducing residual stresses in strong steel welds. However, in multipass welds, the heat input from later weld passes may be insufficient to retransform prior welding passes, leading to the accumulation of thermally induced strains and elevated residual stresses. In this work, the residual stress distributions produced around arc welds fabricated with a martensitic weld filler alloy that transforms at a low temperature have been studied as a function of the number of passes deposited and the interpass temperature. It is found that when the interpass temperature is above the transformation temperature of the weld metal, the entire multipass weld transforms as a single entity, thus permitting the optimum exploitation of the transformation plasticity. In contrast, the deposition of new metal with a relatively low interpass temperature leads to increased residual stresses in the underlying layers, reducing or eliminating the beneficial stress states previously created., Appeared or available online: den 10 september 2013

Abstract

Transformation plasticity can be utilised to control residual stresses in steel welds. This requires special filler alloys that transform at a sufficiently low temperature to compensate for accumulated thermal contraction strains. However, the welding parameters needed to optimise the effect in multipass joints have yet to be established. This topic has been investigated by characterising the residual stress distribution in multipass welds fabricated with different welding alloys and baseplates using neutron diffraction to assess the effects of dilution and baseplate strength. While the use of richly alloyed weld metal does enhance fatigue performance in single pass joints, the extent of stress relief that can be derived from transformation plasticity is reduced due to incomplete martensitic transformation when further layers are deposited. For all cases studied, compressive stresses were measured in the weld metal with balancing tensile stress in the heat affected zone of the plate. The magnitude of the tension was observed to be a function of the strength of the baseplate. Recommendations are also presented for the combination of welding and material parameters that lead to the optimum exploitation of transformation plasticity as a method for boosting the fatigue performance of multipass welded joints.

Abstract

Pulsed neutron beams available at the ISIS spallation source offer diverse possibilities for materials characterization using diffraction and imaging. In this paper we review a range of applications of the time-of-flight neutron diffraction for the characterization of phase transformation and residual stress states in industrially-relevant situations. The setup of the ENGIN-X instrument at ISIS is described, followed by a series of case studies based on the recently obtained results.

Abstract

SUMMARY: Most current stable isotope-based methodologies are targeted and focus only on the well-described aspects of metabolic networks. Here, we present NTFD (non-targeted tracer fate detection), a software for the non-targeted analysis of all detectable compounds derived from a stable isotope-labeled tracer present in a GC/MS dataset. In contrast to traditional metabolic flux analysis approaches, NTFD does not depend on any a priori knowledge or library information. To obtain dynamic information on metabolic pathway activity, NTFD determines mass isotopomer distributions for all detected and labeled compounds. These data provide information on relative fluxes in a metabolic network. The graphical user interface allows users to import GC/MS data in netCDF format and export all information into a tab-separated format. AVAILABILITY: NTFD is C++- and Qt4-based, and it is freely available under an open-source license. Pre-compiled packages for the installation on Debian- and Redhat-based Linux distributions, as well as Windows operating systems, along with example data, are provided for download at http://ntfd.mit.edu/. Abstract

eMAP is a new proposed high flux medium-resolution time-of-flight engineering diffractometer that will be built at ISIS Target Station 2. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to optimise the neutron guide to maximise brilliance transfer. eMAP features great flexibility in tuning for flux or resolution. The diffractometer achieves a figure of merit that surpasses the ENGIN-X diffractometer at ISIS by more than a factor 10. The new instrument will bring additional capacity and advanced stress measurement capabilities to the engineering diffraction user programme at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source.

187. Utilizing use case classes for requirement and traceability modeling

Abstract

Changes to the UML 2.0 revision indicate that clarifications on the future of traditional use case needs to take place. The indications are that the use case notation can be replaced by use-case classes. Use case classes model requirement types as cohesive package consisting of requirement attributes and operations. The UML 2.0 supporting documentation does little to demystify the exploitation of the use case classes. The layered Model Driven Architecture and the underlying techniques recommended by the OMG may provide the solution. In this paper we review the critical changes to UML 2.0 regarding requirements modeling. We demonstrate that use case classes are formal templates for describing rules on modeling requirements with instances. We present a class hierarchical structure representing the complex relationship between business, product and project requirements using UML dependencies. We adapt the UML 2.0 extension mechanism notation to assist with the depiction of the requirement traceability links. Replacing use cases with classes and utilizing the explicit traceability links we integrate the requirement elements and the design elements into the same work space. Bridging the gap between requirements and the rest of the development process makes the test effort easier. For example, the use case classes serve as system and function test drivers. We show that requirement patterns are descriptions of communicating objects and classes. The UML extension mechanisms assist us to represent the requirement traceability links. Therefore by recognizing recurring dependency relationships of we are in fact uncovering traceability patterns. We support our project with a simple requirement process framework. Word embeddings trained on natural corpora (e.g., newspaper collections, Wikipedia or the Web) excel in capturing thematic similarity (“topical relatedness”) on word pairs such as ‘coffee’ and ‘cup’ or ’bus’ and ‘road’. However, they are less successful on pairs showing taxonomic similarity, like ‘cup’ and ‘mug’ (near synonyms) or ‘bus’ and ‘train’ (types of public transport). Moreover, purely taxonomy-based embeddings (e.g. those trained on a random-walk of WordNet’s structure) outperform natural-corpus embeddings in taxonomic similarity but underperform them in thematic similarity. Previous work suggests that performance gains in both types of similarity can be achieved by enriching natural-corpus embeddings with taxonomic information from taxonomies like Word-Net. This taxonomic enrichment can be done by combining natural-corpus embeddings with taxonomic embeddings (e.g. those trained on a random-walk of WordNet’s structure). This paper conducts a deep analysis of this assumption and shows that both the size of the natural corpus and of the random-walk coverage of the WordNet structure play a crucial role in the performance of combined (enriched) vectors in both similarity tasks. Specifically, we show that embeddings trained on medium-sized natural corpora benefit the most from taxonomic enrichment whilst embeddings trained on large natural corpora only benefit from this enrichment when evaluated on taxonomic similarity tasks. The implication of this is that care has to be taken in controlling the size of the natural corpus and the size of the random-walk used to train vectors. In addition, we find that, whilst the WordNet structure is finite and it is possible to fully traverse it in a single pass, the repetition of well-connected WordNet concepts in extended random-walks effectively reinforces taxonomic relations in the learned embeddings.
