Abstract

The Double Chooz experiment has determined the value of the neutrino oscillation parameter $\theta_{13}$ from an analysis of inverse beta decay interactions with neutron capture on hydrogen. This analysis uses a three times larger fiducial volume than the standard Double Chooz assessment, which is restricted to a region doped with gadolinium (Gd), yielding an exposure of 113.1 GW-ton-years. The data sample used in this analysis is distinct from that of the Gd analysis, and the systematic uncertainties are also largely independent, with some exceptions, such as the reactor neutrino flux prediction. A combined rate- and energy-dependent fit finds $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}=0.097\pm 0.034(stat.) \pm 0.034 (syst.)$, excluding the no-oscillation hypothesis at 2.0 \sigma. This result is consistent with previous measurements of $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}$.

Abstract

A 94-year-old female patient presented with anorexia and left axillar lymphadenopathy on admission. Her past history was angina pectoris at 83 years of age and total gastrectomy due to gastric cancer at 87 years. The family history revealed that her son had had a malignant lymphoma, the histopathological diagnosis of which was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. A physical examination showed both cervical, axillar, and inguinal lymphadenopathy without tenderness. She had elevated lactate dehydrogenase, ferritin, and soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R). Whole-body computed tomography confirmed the cervical, axillary, and inguinal lymphadenopathy. Gallium-68 imaging revealed positive accumulation in these superficial lymph nodes. A right inguinal lymph node biopsy showed features of Epstein-Barr virus-associated lymphoproliferative disorder. Immunohistological studies on this lymph node biopsy showed CD20-positive large cells, CD3-positive small cells, and CD30-partly-positive large cells. In situ hybridization showed Epstein-Barr virus-positive, LMP-partly-positive, and EBNA2-negative cells. She refused chemotherapy as her son had died from hematemesis during chemotherapy. She received intravenous hyperalimentation for 1 month after admission. No palpable lymph nodes were identified by physical examination or computed tomography 3 months after admission, and regression of lactate dehydrogenase, ferritin, and sIL-2R was observed. She recovered from anorexia and was discharged. She died from pneumonia 10 months later after initial symptoms of anorexia. The autopsy showed no superficial lymphadenopathy.

Abstract

In this letter, we discuss the increase in the average cluster size by lowering the stagnation temperature of the methane (CH4) gas. The Coulomb explosion experiments are conducted to estimate the cluster size and the size distribution. The average CH4 cluster sizes Nav of 6 230 and 6 580 are acquired with the source conditions of 30 bars at 240 K and 60 bars at 296 K, respectively. Empirical estimation suggests a five-fold increase in the average size of the CH4 clusters at 240 K compared with that at room temperature under a backing pressure of 30 bars. A strong nonlinear Hagena parameter relation (\Gamma *\propto T^{-3.3}) for the CH4 clusters is revealed. The results may be favorable for the production of large-sized clusters by using gases at low temperature and high back pressures.

Abstract

Population structure and demographic history of the Japanese Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius a highly piscivorous and migratory marine fish, were assessed using mitochondrial DNA control region sequences (n = 720) and microsatellite genotypes at five loci (n = 1331) for samples collected on Japanese coasts from 2001 to 2010. The population structure was panmictic and the haplotype and allele frequencies were temporally stable even during the recent recovery process. Demographic expansion was strongly supported throughout the Pleistocene, suggesting that the oscillating glacial and interglacial climate conditions in the Pleistocene had no substantial impact on the demographic history of S. niphonius.

Abstract

LPE is an important epitaxial method, because the growth can be performed in comparably simple and inexpensive apparatus from solutions at relatively low temperature under near-equilibrium conditions, resulting in high purity and low density of defects at low cost of operation. Therefore, LPE has been widely used in the manufacture of III–V heterostructures, primarily for optoelectronic device applications. In order to support thermodynamically the determination of LPE growth conditions such as lattice matching to substrate, equilibrium phase diagrams have been theoretically and experimentally investigated. The most important challenge is the development of methods for in situ monitoring and control of the temperature at the growth interface. In this article, LPE growth is described focusing on Ga x In 1- x As and Ga x In 1- x P y As 1- y on InP as model systems. LPE growth of other semiconductors, such as silicon, SiC, SiGe, and GaN, is also an important area of research and development.

Abstract

International audience; Background & AimsTreatment approaches for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) vary across countries, but these differences and their potential impact on outcomes have not been comprehensively assessed. Data from the multinational GIDEON (Global Investigation of therapeutic DEcisions in HCC and Of its treatment with sorafeNib) registry evaluated differences in patient characteristics, practice patterns and outcomes in HCC across geographical regions in patients who received sorafenib.MethodsGIDEON is a non-randomised, observational registry study conducted in 39 countries across five global regions. HCC patients in whom a decision to treat with sorafenib was made in clinical practice and according to local practices were included.Results3202 patients were evaluable for safety analysis: Asia-Pacific (n = 928), Japan (n = 508), Europe (n = 1113), USA (n = 563) and Latin America (n = 90). Patients in Japan had earlier-stage disease at initial diagnosis compared with patients in other regions (Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage A; 43.7% vs 9.1-24.3%). Use of locoregional therapies before sorafenib, including transarterial chemoembolisation, was more common in Japan (84.4%) and Asia-Pacific (67.2%) compared with the USA (49.4%) and Europe (43.5%). Treatment patterns with respect to sorafenib also differed, with a shorter duration of treatment reported in the USA and Asia-Pacific. Time from initial diagnosis to death was longer in Japan compared with other regions (median, 79.6 months vs 14.8-25.0 months).ConclusionsData from GIDEON highlight regional variations in the management of HCC and patient outcomes. Greater standardisation of management may help optimise outcomes for HCC patients.

159. Clear association between serum levels of adipokines and T-helper 17-related cytokines in patients with psoriasis

Abstract

Summary Background. Psoriasis represents one of the T-helper (Th)17-mediated autoimmune diseases, and has been shown to be associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). It has been reported that some adipokines and Th17-related cytokines are altered in patients with psoriasis. Aim. To examine the relationship between levels of adipokines and Th17-related cytokines in the serum of patients with psoriasis compared with healthy controls. Methods. We enrolled 30 patients with psoriasis and 30 normal controls in the study, and used ELISA to measure serum adipokines and Th17-related cytokines. The association between each adipokine and each cytokine was determined using Pearson correlation analysis. Multiple regression analysis using all adipokines and Th17-related cytokines as covariates was also performed. Results. Pearson correlation analysis showed a strong positive association between chemerin and resistin levels and between adiponectin and high molecular weight adiponectin in normal controls. By contrast, in patients with psoriasis, resistin levels were significantly positively associated with tumour necrosis factor-α, while there was a strong negative association between retinol binding protein-4 and interleukin (IL)-6 levels. Interestingly, a marked positive correlation between IL-22 and adiponectin was also found in patients with psoriasis. Leptin levels correlated positively with IL-6 in patients with psoriasis, but this did not reach significance. The correlations identified by the multiple regression analyses were almost identical to those from the Pearson analyses. Conclusions. These data suggest that distinct interaction between adipokines and Th17 cytokines is involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.

Abstract

We present Raman imaging and photoexcitation infrared studies of organic semiconductor films, which are used in organic light-emitting diodes, thin-film transistors, and photovoltaic solar cells. Raman images of the ratio ( R ) of intensity of the 1596-cm −1 band ( b 3g ) to that of the 1533-cm −1 band ( a g ) were used for characterizing the 1.55-nm and the 1.44-nm phases in pentacene thin films. The Raman spectrum of N , N ′-di-1-naphthaleyl- N , N ′-diphenyl-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine (NPD) film formed on a MoO 3 -deposited indium–tin-oxide (ITO)/glass substrate indicated that the cation of NPD is formed upon oxidation by MoO 3 . The Raman image of the sample showed the heterogeneous distribution of the cation of NPD. Photoinduced infrared absorption from a film of regioregular poly(3-octylthiophene) (P3OT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C 61 -butyric acid methyl ether (PCBM) blend was measured by difference infrared spectroscopy. The temperature dependence of photoinduced infrared absorption due to positive polarons showed the existence of two kinds of carrier traps.

Abstract

A concept of the quality management system proposed for the Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library (JENDL) is described. The concept is based on the process approach established as an International Standard of a quality management system (ISO 9001). In order to discuss how to guarantee the quality of JENDL, a working group focusing on a quality assurance strategy was established in the Japanese Nuclear Data Committee. After three years of discussions, the working group published a report about a quality management system for JENDL and proposed this work to the JENDL evaluation group of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The concept of quality management system of JENDL consists of five items: (1) Objective, (2) Organization, (3) Scope, (4) Quality Assurance, and (5) Quality Manual. The concept of the quality management system and the documented procedure have been presented.

Abstract

The phylogenetically-conserved vertebrate transcription factor, NFIB, is an orchestrator of glial differentiation in the developing mammalian central nervous system. We found NFIB expression to be reduced in glioblastoma (GBM), the commonest and most lethal primary adult brain cancer, so investigated what effect increased expression of NFIB had on GBM. Increased expression of NFIB in primary GBM cell lines induced expression of markers of glial differentiation, inhibited cell proliferation, reduced stem/progenitor cell growth, altered cell cycle progression and inhibited tumor growth in murine models of GBM. We thus identified NFIB to be a novel tumor suppressor gene in GBM.

Abstract

Synopsis Morphology and coefficient of friction associated with water content in the skin were investigated by a combination method of profilometry and measurement of friction using a newly developed instrument placed on the flexor aspect of the forearm. It was shown that the number of domains enclosed by lines (sulci cutis) on the skin surface per unit area initially decreased rapidly, but then more gradually, with the advancing age of the subjects. Electron micrographs showed that the skin surface exhibited a pattern formed by thick and fine lines, each of which differed both in length and depth from the superficial surface of the skin. The pattern of the skin surface in advanced age is mainly formed by thick lines. The number of domains on the skin surface caused changes in the friction coefficient; that is, the increase in the static coefficient of friction varies with the decrease in the number of domains. The results are discussed from the point of view of the change in the elastic modulus of skin with the advancing age of subjects. We found that the number of domains (i.e., areas enclosed by lines) varied inversely with the square of the coefficient of friction. Resume Le coefficient de morphologie et de friction associe avec le contenu en eau de la peau a ete analyse en combinant 1 methode de profilometrie et la mesure de la friction a l'aide d'un nouvel instrument place sur la partie flexible de l'avant bras. Il est apparu que le nombre de sillons par ligne (sulci cutis) sur la surface cutanee par unite d'aire a d'abord diminue rapidement puis graduellement avec le vieillissement des individus. Les micrographes a electrons ont montre que la peau etait formee de ligne fines ou epaisses, chacune d'entre elles different par la longueur et la profondeur sur la surface de la peau. La surface cutanee de personnes plus âgees est formee principalement de lignes epaisses. Le nombre de sillons sur la peau modifiait le coefficient de friction, le coefficient de friction statique correspondant a la diminution du nombre de sillons. Les resultats ont ete discutes du point de vue du changement d'elasticite de la peau avec le vieillissement des sujets. Nous avons decouvert que le nombre de sillons c'est a dire les aires par ligne variait inversement par rapport au coefficient de friction.

Abstract

Recently, we reported that chemerin, a new adipokine, is highly expressed in the adipose tissue, up-regulated during adipocyte differentiation, and regulates adipogenesis via its own receptor in mice. The objectives of this study were to clone chemerin and its receptor from the adipose tissues of Japanese Black cattle and to investigate the expression of these genes in 16 different tissues. We compared the gene expression of chemerin and its receptor between adipocytes and stromal-vascular (S-V) cells (non-adipocytes) prepared from subcutaneous adipose tissue. In addition, we investigated the mRNA expression levels of chemerin and its receptor in bovine differentiated adipocytes. The DNA sequences of bovine chemerin and its receptor were determined, and they were found to be highly homologous to those of humans, mice, and pigs. The amino acid sequences predicted for the full-length cDNA of bovine chemerin and its receptor were also similar to those of humans, mice, and pigs, suggesting that these genes have similar functions. Bovine chemerin mRNA was highly expressed in the adipose and liver tissues, and the transcripts of chemerin receptor were widely expressed in several tissues including adipose, muscle, liver, and brain tissues. The expression of bovine chemerin mRNA was higher in adipocytes than in S-V cells prepared from adipose tissue. The transcripts of chemerin and its receptor were up-regulated during adipocyte differentiation. Treatment with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α (10 ng/mL) in bovine differentiated adipocytes increased the mRNA expression of chemerin and its receptor. These results indicate that chemerin, a new adipokine highly expressed in the adipocytes of bovine adipose tissue, is the TNF-α-up-regulated gene with a role in adipogenesis.

Abstract

Low energy phonons in LaOBiS2−xSex are studied using inelastic neutron scattering. Dispersionless flat phonon branches that are mainly associated with a large vibration of Bi atoms are observed at a relatively low energy of E = 6–6.7 meV. The phonon energy softens upon Se doping presumably owing to its heavier atomic mass than the S atom and the expansion of the lattice constant. Simultaneously, the lattice thermal conductivity lowered upon Se doping as the same manner of the phonon softening. These suggest that despite the lack of an oversized cage in LaOBiS2−xSex, rattling motions of Bi atoms can scatter phonon like rattling in cage compounds, contributing to enhance the thermoelectric property.

Abstract

A low background HPGe detector system was developed at CANDLES Experimental Hall for multipurpose use. Various low background techniques were employed, including hermatic shield design, radon gas suppression, and background reduction analysis. A new pulse shape discrimination (PSD) method was specially created for coaxial Ge detector. Using this PSD method, microphonics noise and background event at low energy region less than 200 keV can be rejected effectively. Monte Carlo simulation by GEANT4 was performed to acquire the detection efficiency and study the interaction of gamma-rays with detector system. For rare decay measurement, the detector was utilized to detect the nature’s most stable isomer tantalum-180m (180Tam) decay. Two phases of tantalum physics run were completed with total livetime of 358.2 days, which Phase II has upgraded shield configuration. The world most stringent half-life limit of 180Tam has been successfully achieved.

Abstract

We measured noninvasively step velocities of elementary two-dimensional (2D) islands on {110} faces of tetragonal lysozyme crystals, under various supersaturations, by laser confocal microscopy combined with differential interference contrast microscopy. We studied the correlation between the effects of protein impurities on the growth of elementary steps and their adsorption sites on a crystal surface, using three kinds of proteins: fluorescent-labeled lysozyme (F-lysozyme), covalently bonded dimers of lysozyme (dimer), and a 18 kDa polypeptide (18 kDa). These three protein impurities suppressed the advancement of the steps. However, they exhibited different supersaturation dependencies of the suppression of the step velocities. To clarify the cause of this difference, we observed in situ the adsorption sites of individual molecules of F-lysozyme and fluorescent-labeled dimer (F-dimer) on the crystal surface by single-molecule visualization. We found that F-lysozyme adsorbed preferentially on steps (i.e., kinks), whereas F-dimer adsorbed randomly on terraces. Taking into account the different adsorption sites of F-lysozyme and F-dimer, we could successfully explain the different effects of the impurities on the step velocities. These observations strongly suggest that 18 kDa also adsorbs randomly on terraces. Seikagaku lysozyme exhibited a complex effect that could not alone be explained by the two major impurities (dimer and 18 kDa) present in Seikagaku lysozyme, indicating that trace amounts of other impurities significantly affect the step advancement.

Abstract

Nuclear chromatin decondensation (NCD) of the human spermatozoa was induced by 1% sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). NCD of the spermatozoa induced in healthy and fertile men was significantly stronger and at higher rates than that in infertile men. In 1% SDS with 6 mM zinc chelating EDTA, metallothionein (MT) significantly enhanced NCD in a healthy man. In contrast MT alone significantly inhibited sperm NCD. Sperm NCD rate induced by 1% SDS in 10 infertile men was significantly inhibited by adding 75 or 750 micrograms ml-1 of MT. By adding 1.5 mM zinc, MT at concentrations of 0.75, 7.5, 75, or 750 micrograms ml-1, enhanced the inhibitory effect of 1.5 mM zinc. This suggested that thiols in the MT could, when liberated from zinc by zinc-chelating EDTA, induce sperm decondensation by cleaving stabilizing S-S bridges and that zinc bound to MT could exert a chromatin stabilizing effect mediated by the zinc dependent type of chromatin stability. The present study suggested that zinc bound to MT, which is secreted mainly from the prostate gland, is one factor that contributes to the chromatin stabilizing effect of human prostatic fluid.

Abstract

Blood rheology, fasting serum concentrations of remnant-like lipoprotein particle cholesterol (RLP-C) and concentrations of other lipids were compared in 23 hypercholesterolaemic and 69 normocholesterolaemic subjects, and the relationship between red blood cell (RBC) deformability and RLP-C concentrations were studied in a different set of six hypercholesterolaemic and six normocholesterolaemic subjects. Passage time of whole blood and concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and RLP-C were significantly higher in hypercholesterolaemic than in normocholesterolaemic subjects. Passage time of whole blood correlated positively with TC, TG, LDL-C and RLP-C and negatively with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Furthermore, the passage time of 10% haematocrit-adjusted RBCs in phosphate-buffered saline, which reflects RBC deformability, correlated positively with the passage time of whole blood and RLP-C. Thus, hypercholesterolaemic subjects had impaired blood rheology and elevated RLP-C concentrations, which may be associated with the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolaemic subjects. Impaired RBC deformability may contribute to impaired blood rheology associated with elevated RLP-C in hypercholesterolaemic subjects.

Abstract

For the purpose of a nationwide surveillance of the antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial respiratory pathogens in patients in Japan, the Japanese Society of Chemotherapy conducted their second year survey, during the period from January to August, 2007. A total of 1178 strains were collected from clinical specimens obtained from adult patients with well-diagnosed respiratory tract infections. Susceptibility testing was evaluable for 1108 strains (226 Staphylococcus aureus, 257 Streptococcus pneumoniae, 6 Streptococcus pyogenes, 206 Haemophilus influenzae, 120 Moraxella catarrhalis, 122 Klebsiella pneumoniae, and 171 Pseudomonas aeruginosa). A total of 44 antibacterial agents, including 26 beta-lactams (four penicillins, three penicillins in combination with beta-lactamase inhibitors, four oral cephems, eight parenteral cephems, one monobactam, five carbapenems, and one penem), three aminoglycosides, four macrolides (including ketolide), one lincosamide, one tetracycline, two glycopeptides, six fluoroquinolones, and one oxazolidinone were used for the study. Analysis was conducted at the central reference laboratory according to the method recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). The incidence of methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was high, at 59.7%, and the incidences of penicillin-intermediateresistant and -resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (PISP and PRSP) were 30.4% and 5.1%, respectively. Among Haemophilus influenzae strains, 19.9% of them were found to be beta-lactamase-non-producing ampicillin (ABPC)-intermediately-resistant (BLNAI), 29.1% to be beta-lactamasenon-producing ABPC-resistant (BLNAR), and 6.7% to be beta-lactamase-producing ABPC-resistant (BLPAR) strains. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae was not isolated. Two isolates (1.2%) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were found to be metallo-beta-lactamase-producing strains, including one (0.6%) suspected multidrug-resistant strain showing resistance to imipenem, amikacin, and ciprofloxacin. These data will be a useful reference for future periodic surveillance studies and for investigations to control resistant infections as well. Continued surveillance is required to prevent the further spread of these antimicrobial resistances.

Abstract

Based on O – C curves, we present detailed period investigations of two weak-contact binaries CC Com and BV Dra. It is found that the periods of these two binaries have varied in a cyclic variation way superposed on a secular period change. The periods and amplitudes of the cyclic variations are P 3 = 23.6(±0.4) yr and A = 00028(±00003) for CC Com and P 3 = 23.8(±0.6) yr and A = 00029(±00003) for BV Dra. The cyclic oscillations for these two stars may be attributed to the light-time effect via an unseen third body, which could extract angular momentum from the central system. If the existence of the additional body is true, CC Com and BV Dra may be triple system stars. For CC Com, the secular period decrease rate is dP/dt = –0.20 × 10–7 d yr–1, which suggests that the mass transfers from the more massive component to the less massive one, accompanied with the angular momentum loss due to mass outflow from L 2. A decrease in its orbital period will result in the shrinking of the inner and outer critical Roche lobes, and then cause the contact degree to increase. This kind of weak-contact binary with a long-term period decrease may evolve into a deep contact configuration. For BV Dra, the continuous period increase rate is dP/dt = +0.29 × 10–7 d yr–1, indicating that the mass transfers from the less massive component to the more massive one. An increase in its orbital period may cause the separation between both components to increase, and thus the contact configuration will break, as predicted by thermal relaxation oscillation theory. Therefore, this kind of weak-contact binary with a secular period increase will evolve into a broken-contact configuration.

Abstract

Background and Objective: In periodontal tissue engineering, the sourcing of most of the relevant cells is limited by poor accessibility, whereas the use of readily available gingival fibroblasts is hampered because of their inhibitory effects on bone formation. To address the latter drawback, we developed a new graft composed of fibronectin (FN) matrix-based multilayered cell sheets of human gingival fibroblasts modified to express alkaline phosphatase (ALP). This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of this graft, called the FN-ALP transplant, on the healing of periodontal defects in a rat model. Material and Methods: The FN-ALP transplants were grafted into periodontal fenestration bone defects in immunosuppressed rats. The process of periodontal healing was examined by histology, histomorphometry and immunohistochemistry. Grafted cells were tracked by immunostaining with human-specific antibodies. Control groups included non-transplanted empty defects and defects to which cell sheets without ALP induction had been grafted. Results: After implantation, the FN-ALP transplants healed alveolar bone defects by intramembranous ossification, with formation of cementum and periodontal ligament. Moreover, FN-ALP transplants increased new bone formation, by endochondral ossification, on the mandibular cortex adjacent to the defect. Grafted fibroblasts were located near host osteoblasts and chondrocyte precursor cells early in the ossification process but were undetectable on and in newly formed bone and cartilage. Conclusion: These results indicate that the FN-ALP transplants support alveolar bone regeneration within the defect and augment bone formation outside the defect through the recruitment of host osteo/chondrogenic cells, suggesting their potential for periodontal tissue engineering applications.

Abstract

Initial experiments on electron acceleration in self- modulated laser wake-field acceleration regime have been carried out at the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore, India, using a 6-TW 45-fs Ti:sapphire laser. The laser beam was focused to an intensity >1018 W/cm2 on a supersonic helium gas jet. Total charge and spatial profile of the electron beam produced were measured using an integrating current transformer and a phosphor screen, respectively. For a plasma density of 5 times 1019-1020 cm-3, electron beam was produced with a high charge of 2.5-2.7 nC/shot and a divergence of ~10-~100 mrad.

Abstract

Experiments for the laser guiding studies has been carried out with the 30-fs 100-TW Ti:sapphire laser pulse interaction with the underdense plasma produced by a long-slab (1.2 times 10 mm2) gas jet and an ablative laser-triggered discharged capillary. Formation of an extremely long plasma channel with a length (~10 mm) 10 times above the Rayleigh length is observed when the laser pulse power is much higher than the critical power for relativistic self-focusing. The long-self-guiding- channel formation is accompanied by the electron acceleration with a low transverse emittance (< 0.87pi mm mrad) and high electric current (~10 nC/shot), as well as the generation of a quasi- monoenergetic electron bunch with an energy of ~80 MeV. In order to continuously elongate the plasma channel, a 4-cm- scale discharged capillary was used. We successfully demonstrated laser-plasma acceleration of high-quality electron beams up to nearly semigigaelectronvolts. Our results exactly verified the prediction of laser wakefield acceleration through a centimeter- scale plasma channel in the "blowout bubble" regime, where a microscale plasma cavity produced through the ultrarelativistic laser-plasma interactions plays an essential role in the self- injection and acceleration of electrons.

Abstract

We demonstrate a highly reproducible acceleration of a high-quality electron bunch injected into the laser wake field accelerator with the help of a countercrossing laser pulse. In our experiments, the wake field is generated by a subrelativistic laser pulse; the second laser pulse collides with the first pulse at 135 , realizing optical injection of electron bunch into the wake field. Because the second pulse is countercrossing, it cannot damage the laser system. The observed electron bunch has the energy of 14 MeV with an 11% (1.5 MeV) spread, the total charge of 22 pC, and a reproducibility of at least 50%.

Abstract

Self-injection and acceleration of monoenergetic electron beams from laser wakefield accelerators are first investigated in the highly relativistic regime, using 100 TW class, 27fs laser pulses. Quasi-monoenergetic multi-bunched beams with energies as high as multi-hundred MeV are observed with simultaneous measurements of side-scattering emissions that indicate the formation of self-channelling and self-injection of electrons into a plasma wake, referred to as a 'bubble'. The three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations confirmed multiple self-injection of electron bunches into the bubble and their beam acceleration with gradient of 1.5GeV/cm.

Abstract

Multiple electron self-injection in laser wake-field acceleration is studied via fully relativistic two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The electron density modulation in the laser wake originating from oscillations of the laser pulse waist and relativistic effects can provoke the parametric resonance in the electron fluid momentum. This may result in repetitive trapping of plasma electrons in the acceleration phase of the laser wake: multiple electron self-injection. The maximal energy of the accelerated electrons depends strongly on the total charge of the injected electrons. A low energy spread, less than 1%, for an almost 1 GeV energy electron beam with charge about 10 pC is found numerically in the plasma channel irradiated by a 25 TW laser pulse, while a 200 TW laser pulse produces a few nC beam with only 150 MeV energy. Essentially thermalization of accelerated electrons is also a result of charge loading.

Abstract

The ethylation of biphenyl (BP) with ethene was examined over dealuminated H-mordenite (MOR; SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 = 206). The ethylation occurred non-shape-selectively, and gave a mixture of ethylbiphenyls (EBPs), diethylbiphenyls (DEBPs), and higher ethylates. The ethylation of BP to EBPs was yielded in the ratio, 2-EBP:3-EBP:4-EBP = 2:2:1 at the initial stages. The reaction occurs under kinetic control. The formation of 4,4′-DEBP was less selective than that of the other isomers; however, the combined selectivity for DEBPs with 4-ethyl groups was higher than 80% during the reaction. 4-EBP was consumed rapidly than the other EBPs in the ethylation of EBPs to DEBPs. Less bulky DEBPs, particularly, 4,4′-DEBP disappeared preferentially compared to the other DEBPs in the ethylation of EBPs to higher ethylates. These results show that the MOR channels are too large for the shape-selective formation of 4-EBP and 4,4′-DEBP by the “restricted transition state selectivity mechanism”. The reactivities of reaction intermediates in the ethylation of BP decreased in the order: 4,4′-DEBP > 4-EBP > BP ≫ 3-EBP ≫ 2-EBP. These three EBP isomers have quite different reactivities for the further ethylation: 4-EBP was preferentially consumed to yield DEBPs with 4-ethyl groups. 3-EBP partly participated in the ethylation to DEBPs, particularly, at high conversion; however, 2-EBP was not ethylated even at the high conversion. Further, 4,4′-DEBP was preferentially ethylated to higher ethylates because it is the most reactive among BP, EBPs, and DEBPs. These high reactivities of 4-EBP and 4,4′-DEBP among their isomers were due to the “reactant selectivity mechanism”. Molecular modeling of the diffusion of the products suggests that the MOR channels are too large for the selective formation of 4,4′-DEBP because all DEBPs can diffuse in the channels. The preferential disappearance of 4-EBP and 4,4′-DEBP is due to the difference of the diffusion in the channels among their isomers. These simulations are corresponding to the experimental results.

Abstract

Caprella mutica (Amphipoda) has been successfully reared through several generations per year for public exhibition in a tank of 500 L, more than five year after introduction of the species into the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium, Japan. The tank was equipped with a coral sand bed filter, a circulation system, and a heater/chiller unit. Artificial seawater (Reef Crystals) was used as a medium. The diatom Phaeodactylum and hatched juveniles of Artemia were provided as food for C. mutica. Two years after the introduction, the sex ratio (females/(females + males)) was 0.50. Males reached body lengths up to 20.5 mm, while the largest female was 10.4 mm long. The average number of embryos/female was 33.0. Embryos were 0.38 to 0.41 mm in the long axis, and 0.30 to 0.33 mm in the short axis. These reproductive characters enable the production of multiple generations in a single year.
