Abstract

The authors compute the support varieties of all irreducible modules for the small quantum group u ζ ( g ) , where g is a finite-dimensional simple complex Lie algebra, and ζ is a primitive l-th root of unity with l larger than the Coxeter number of g . The calculation employs the prior calculations and techniques of Ostrik and of Nakano, Parshall, and Vella, as well as deep results involving the validity of the Lusztig character formula for quantum groups and the positivity of parabolic Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials for the affine Weyl group. Analogous support variety calculations are provided for the first Frobenius kernel G 1 of a reductive algebraic group scheme G defined over the prime field F p .

Abstract

To establish the method for determining the amount of carbon in the ferrite phase in ferrite + martensite dual-phase low-alloy steels, mechanical loss measurements have been performed on a series of Fe–C alloys with varying constitution. The observed mechanical loss spectra of two-phase alloys turned out to be simple superposition of those of single phase alloys, of ferrite and of martensite. The concentrations of carbon in solution evaluated from the magnitude of the Snoek relaxation in the two-phase alloys agree well with those expected from the Fe–C phase diagram. It is thus possible to selectively analyse the carbon dissolved in the ferrite phase in the complex structure, at least in simple binary alloys.

Abstract

The support varieties for the induced modules or Weyl modules for a reductive algebraic group G were computed over the first Frobenius kernel G1 by Nakano, Parshall and Vella. A natural generalization of this computation is the calculation of the support varieties of Demazure modules over the first Frobenius kernel, B1, of the Borel subgroup B. In this paper we initiate the study of such computations. We complete the entire picture for reductive groups with underlying root systems A1 and A2. Moreover, we give complete answers for Demazure modules corresponding to a particular (standard) element in the Weyl group, and provide results relating support varieties between different Demazure modules which depend on the Bruhat order.

Abstract

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are one of the air pollutants that cause acid rain. Although utilization of catalysts is a typical established method of treatment to remove NOx, the catalyst is expensive so that the total cost of treatment is high. The efficient treatments using pulsed power, which utilize the pulse streamer discharges, have been studied. We have brought the nanosecond pulsed power to the NOx treatment. More efficient treatment is expected with the high electric fields with a nanosecond pulse width. In using the nanosecond pulsed power, the issue of design and modification of reactors configuration becomes important. Coaxial reactors consisting of wire-cylinder electrodes are adopted here and three types of electrical connecting methods between a generator and reactor chambers and gas tubing methods were investigated. The deposited energy density of 150 J/L yielded approximately 100% NO removal ratio for initial NO gas of 100 ppm. The three types of electrical connections were parallel, straight and serial. The parallel and straight connections yielded a higher removal ratio and efficiency in this experiment. Distribution of voltage in the reactors affects the removal ratio and efficiency since the production and development of streamer discharges depends of the amplitude of voltage. While propagating voltage pulses will decay in the reactors, reflections of voltage pulse at the open end of the reactors multiply the voltage distribution. Although impedance matching between the pulsed power generator and the reactors should be important, a multiplication of the transparent voltage pulse into the reactors by mismatching may improve the treatment.

Abstract

This paper reports on a study comparing three spectroscopic measurements (interactance, reflectance, and transmittance) in the Vis/NIR range for the detection of internal insect infestation with different damaged levels in jujubes ( Hovenia acerba Lindl.). Stepwise discriminant analysis was used to derive the discriminant functions based on the effective wavelengths that had maximum discriminatory potential for the different internal conditions. The results show that both interactance in the long-wave NIR (LWNIR) and transmission in the visible and short-wave near-infrared (VSWNIR) wavelength ranges have an obvious advantage over reflectance for every range in completely distinguishing infested from intact jujubes. However, interactance and reflectance in the VSWNIR wavelength range exhibited higher classification accuracies in sorting severely damaged jujubes from slightly infested and intact samples. Furthermore, transmission had clear advantages over both interactance and reflectance for distinguishing slightly infested jujubes from intact jujubes in the VSWNIR range.

Abstract

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction measurements have been performed on cesium sulfamate CsNH2SO3 single crystal. Two distinct endothermic peaks in the DSC curves are observed at 330 and 436 K. It is pointed out that the peak at 330 K is attributed to the structural phase transition, and the other peak at 436 K is associated with the thermal decomposition of the crystal. The structures in room- and high-temperasture phases are determined, and the space group of the sample crystal is found to change from monoclinic P 21/c to orthorhombic Pnma. The structure of the room-temperature phase consists of two different types of N-H···O hydrogen bond, but in the high-temperature phase there is no specific hydrogen bond between the NSO3 pseudo-tetrahera. Abstract

Pilocytic astrocytomas are classified as WHO grade I gliomas that occur predominantly in children and young adults. Reports of the tumors in elderly adults are extremely rare. We describe two cases of pilocytic astrocytoma in elderly adults, a 68-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman. Brain computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed well-circumscribed lesions associated with contrast enhancement and minimal surrounding edema. Pathological studies revealed findings consistent with pilocytic astrocytomas. Although these tumors are rarely found in elderly adults, pilocytic astrocytomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis if the radiographic features of the tumors are characteristic of pilocytic astrocytomas.

Abstract

We prove the analog of Kostant's Theorem on Lie algebra cohomology in the context of quantum groups. We prove that Kostant's cohomology formula holds for quantum groups at a generic parameter $q$, recovering an earlier result of Malikov in the case where the underlying semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{sl}(n)$. We also show that Kostant's formula holds when $q$ is specialized to an $\ell$-th root of unity for odd $\ell \ge h-1$ (where $h$ is the Coxeter number of $\mathfrak{g}$) when the highest weight of the coefficient module lies in the lowest alcove. This can be regarded as an extension of results of Friedlander-Parshall and Polo-Tilouine on the cohomology of Lie algebras of reductive algebraic groups in prime characteristic.

Abstract

Welding materials, that the principal chemical component is nickel, are used usually for the welding between copper and austenitic stainless steels. But many kinds of mechanical or physical properties of welds between two materials will change largely. In this study, Functionally Graded Piping Joints (FGPJ) have been manufactured as an experiment using copper and austenitic stainless steel (SUS304) powder by a process based on HIP. This composition has been confirmed by absorbed electron and characteristics X-ray images of each mixed layer for FGPJ to be uniform or continuous. The following items have been investigated and compared with the linear law of mixture rule: Vickers hardness, thermal expansion, and thermal conductivity at a one-dimensional non-steady state etc. Those physical properties have been identified to depend on the mixing ratios of copper and austenitic stainless steel (SUS304). Pretty good agreements have been obtained between the experimental data and the calculated values according to the linear law of mixture rule.

Abstract

Background: Neutropenia is a common adverse reaction of chemotherapy. We assessed whether chemotherapy-induced neutropenia could be a predictor of survival for patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: A total of 387 chemotherapy-naïve patients who received chemotherapy (vinorelbine and gemcitabine followed by docetaxel, or paclitaxel and carboplatin) in a randomised controlled trial were evaluated. The proportional-hazards regression model was used to examine the effects of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia and tumour response on overall survival. Landmark analysis was used to lessen the bias of more severe neutropenia resulting from more treatment cycles allowed by longer survival, whereby patients who died within 126 days of starting chemotherapy were excluded. Results: The adjusted hazard ratios for patients with grade-1 to 2 neutropenia or grade-3 to 4 neutropenia compared with no neutropenia were 0.59 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.36–0.97) and 0.71 (95% CI, 0.49–1.03), respectively. The hazard ratios did not differ significantly between the patients who developed neutropenia with stable disease (SD), and those who lacked neutropenia with partial response (PR). Conclusion: Chemotherapy-induced neutropenia is a predictor of better survival for patients with advanced NSCLC. Prospective randomised trials of early-dose increases guided by chemotherapy-induced toxicities are warranted.

Abstract

Let g be the finite-dimensional Witt algebra W(1,1) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>3. It is well known that all simple W(1,1)-modules are finite-dimensional. Each simple module admits a character χ∈g∗. Given χ∈g∗ one can form the (finite-dimensional) reduced enveloping algebra u(g,χ). The simple modules for u(g,χ) are precisely those simple W(1,1)-modules admitting the character χ. In this paper the authors compute Ext1 between pairs of simple modules for u(g,χ).

Abstract

The silicon vertex tracker (VTX) will be installed in the summer of 2010 to enhance the physics capabilities of the Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Interaction eXperiment (PHENIX) experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The VTX consists of two types of silicon detectors: a pixel detector and a strip detector. The pixel detector consists of 30 pixel ladders placed on the two inner cylindrical layers of the VTX. The ladders are required to be assembled with high precision, however, they should be assembled in both cost and time efficient manner. We have developed an assembly bench for the ladder with several assembly fixtures and a quality assurance (Q/A) system using a 3D measurement machine. We have also developed an assembly procedure for the ladder, including a method for dispensing adhesive uniformly and encapsulation of bonding wires. The developed procedures were adopted in the assembly of the first pixel ladder and satisfy the requirements.

Abstract

Alumina-silica (Al2O3-SiO2) composite supports were examined to find the optimum state of support (i.e., composition and morphology). SiO2 content in the Al2O3-SiO2 support induced a shift of the main peak to higher frequency ascribed to an increased amount of Mo8O26 4−. A 75 wt% Al2O3-25 wt% SiO2 support had homogeneously dispersed alumina particles of smaller size with high crystallinity. Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of straight-run gas oil and its conventionally hydrotreated straight-run gas oil was performed over NiMo sulfides supported on Al2O3-SiO2 composites. The high crystallinity of NMASA2-27 may be related to the high HDS and hydrogenation activity of NiMo sulfides due to its moderate interaction with the alumina surface.

Abstract

Systematic research works were carried out to clarify the effects of weave density, yarn twist, and yarn count on fabric handle of polyester fabrics made for the purpose, and quantitative influence was clearly shown. “Kosh” and “hari” increase with weft yarn density and “shinayakasa” and “shari” decrease with the density. The effect of the density on “fukurami” and “kishimi” is small. The effect of yarn twist is revealed remarkably on dechine and yoryu. “Koshi” and “hari” decrease and “shinayakasa” and “shari” increase with the twist in the case of dechine; however, all the primary handles increase a little with the twist for yoryu. “Kishimi” of yoryu increases greatly with the twist. “Koshi” and “hari” increase and “shinayakasa” decreases with yarn count for taffeta and georgette. The effect of the count on “fukurami” and “kishimi” is small for both fabrics. These results could provide useful information to design ideal fabrics having desirable handle.

In this paper we determine the group of endotrivial modules for certain symmetric and alternating groups in characteristic p. If p = 2, then the group is generated by the class of Ωn(k) except in a few low degrees. If p > 2, then the group is only determined for degrees less than p2. In these cases we show that there are several Young modules which are endotrivial.

Abstract

PHENIX has measured the electron-positron pair mass spectrum from 0 to 8 GeV/c(2) in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV. The contributions from light meson decays to e(+)e(-) pairs have been determined based on measurements of hadron production cross sections by PHENIX. Within the systematic uncertainty of similar to 20% they account for all e(+)e(-) pairs in the mass region below similar to 1 GeV/c(2). The e(+)e(-) pair yield remaining after subtracting these contributions is dominated by semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons correlated through flavor conservation. Using the spectral shape predicted by PYTHIA, we estimate the charm production cross section to be 544 +/- 39(stat) +/- 142(syst) +/- 200(model) pb. which is consistent with QCD calculations and measurements of single leptons by PHENIX. Abstract

3/4 of anencephalic infants are stillborn. All die within a week after birth. Anencephaly is a congenital malformation in which the brain is amorphous and the vault of the skull is missing. Low-income primagravidae in urban/industrial communities have the greatest risk of having children with anencephaly or other neural tube defects. No etiology of neural tube defects has been determined. The defect occurs prior to the 5th week of pregnancy. Evidence suggests that the critical period may be the 16th to 26th day of gestation. Minerals in drinking water are being studied to see what if any correlations there are with embryogenesis folate deficiency and pregnancy. The prevalence rate of anencephaly among Jews was 40/1000 for Protestants 90/1000 Catholics 120/1000. Further studies are needed to determine which aspects of religion specifically contraceptive practices relate to anencephaly.

Abstract

Stable multiple emulsions containing andiroba oil and sunscreen have been formulated. These were prepared using the two-step procedure. The formulations were characterized and their stability over the time was evaluated by centrifugation, macroscopic, and microscopic analyses, and rheological measurements. The photoprotective efficacy of the O/W and O1/W/O2 containing or not andiroba oil was evaluated by in vivo sun protection factor determination according to the FDA method. The formulations exhibited good stability during 30 days after preparation at different temperatures. These presented pseudoplastic flow behaviour and thixotropy. The increase of in vivo SPF value was not observed when andiroba oil was incorporated into emulsions containing ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate. These multiple emulsions can be utilized as an interesting topical vehicle.

Abstract

There is little information on the molecular mechanisms in FK506-mediated neuroprotection. In the present study, we investigated the protective effect of FK506, an immunosuppressant and neuroprotectant, on trimethyltin (TMT)-induced neurotoxicity in the rat hippocampus. Histologically, TMT-induced neuronal damage was partially prevented by FK506 in the hippocampal CA1 region, but not in CA3. FK506 treatment significantly reduced the number of apoptotic cells in CA1, but not in CA3, and also prevented induction of cognitive deficits by TMT. Microarray analysis of the rat hippocampus detected 14 genes with TMT-induced alteration of mRNA expression that was rescued by FK506 treatment. Subsequent quantitative RT-PCR analysis confirmed elevated mRNA levels for four inflammatory genes, glutathione S-transferase, lysozyme, matrix Gla protein, and osteopontin after TMT treatment. Upregulation of these genes was reversed by FK506 treatment at 5 days postgavage. Immunohistochemistry revealed that FK506 reduced osteopontin (OPN) induction by TMT in the periarterial area at 5 days postgavage. Our data suggest that inflammatory gene expression is involved in TMT-induced damage to the hippocampal CA1 region, resulting in apoptosis, and that this process is initiated by periarterial OPN activation, and can be alleviated by FK506.

Abstract

Recently, population aging and declining birth rate have become very serious, and people who lack walking capability have truly increased in Japan. To address this issue, gait training has become a requirement for them. Although some training systems have been researched in the past, a training system that entails guidance of walking has not been researched well. This paper focuses on guidance of walking, and it is aimed to develop a training system that utilizes the activity and passivity of the trainee. In addition, rhythmic walking, which takes walking stability and trainee safety into account, is aimed for. In this paper, an improved electric wheelchair is used as gait-training equipment (GTE); then, the trainee is towed by the GTE, and walking is guided. In this paper, a targeted walking cycle is predefined, and the GTE must distinguish the cycle in order to guide walking. Therefore, this paper uses the center of gravity (COG) of the trainee as the index. Thus, the GTE tows the trainee when the swing leg moves more forward than the stance leg; then, rhythmic walking can be guided. In addition, this paper proposes a method to control the GTE by a proportional-differential controller based on virtual compliance that is composed of mass, spring, and damper. The gait training can be safely achieved by deciding the desired position and velocity of the GTE from the tow force through virtual compliance. In this paper, the validity of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulation and experiment. The validity of the proposed system is verified by using a four-link robot whose geometric expression is known as the trainee; then, the application of the proposed method will be extended to a human trainee by only adjusting the parameters.

Abstract

Paraplegia followed spontaneous deformed osteoporotic spine is very rare. Our own 3 cases treated conservatively in two and operatively in one with success and 11 cases reported in the literatures were analyzed. All patients were recovered from paraplegia. One patient was died one and a half year after the recovery of her paralytic episode. Thorough autopsy study of this patient showed no organic lesion in the regarded spinal cord due to such kind of spine deformity.

Tumors and tumor-like conditions in the talus are rare.--In our first case operation revealed a benign osteoblastoma, in the second case an solitary bone cyst. Microscopic findings allowed other diagnoses too, but our diagnoses were made on the basis of clinical appearance and X-ray and histological findings. After local resection and insertion of bone chips in the one case and curettage and filling with bone chips in the other, healing was complete.

Abstract

Let $\zeta$ be a complex $\ell$th root of unity for an odd integer $\ell>1$. For any complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, let $u_\zeta=u_\zeta({\mathfrak g})$ be the associated “small” quantum enveloping algebra. This algebra is a finite dimensional Hopf algebra which can be realized as a subalgebra of the Lusztig (divided power) quantum enveloping algebra $U_\zeta$ and as a quotient algebra of the De Concini–Kac quantum enveloping algebra ${\mathcal U}_\zeta$. It plays an important role in the representation theories of both $U_\zeta$ and ${\mathcal U}_\zeta$ in a way analogous to that played by the restricted enveloping algebra $u$ of a reductive group $G$ in positive characteristic $p$ with respect to its distribution and enveloping algebras. In general, little is known about the representation theory of quantum groups (resp., algebraic groups) when $l$ (resp., $p$) is smaller than the Coxeter number $h$ of the underlying root system. For example, Lusztig's conjecture concerning the characters of the rational irreducible $G$-modules stipulates that $p \geq h$. The main result in this paper provides a surprisingly uniform answer for the cohomology algebra $\operatorname{H}^\bullet(u_\zeta,{\mathbb C})$ of the small quantum group.

We investigate blocks of the Category O for the Virasoro algebra over C. We demonstrate that the blocks have Kazhdan‐Lusztig theories and that the truncated blocks give rise to interesting Koszul algebras. The simple modules have BGG resolutions, and from this we compute the extensions between Verma modules and simple modules, and between pairs of simple modules.

Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group with a Frobenius morphism F: G → G defined over a finite field □ pr . The main result of the paper is to prove that any rational G-module M which is projective when restricted to the Frobenius kernel G r = Ker(F) is also projective over the split and twisted finite Chevalley groups. In 1987, Parshall conjectured this statement for r = 1 in the split case. The authors verified this in 1999 with the possible exclusion of primes 2 and 3 in non-simply laced cases. The converse of the main result is also discussed for split groups in this paper.

Let G G be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0 p>0 , G 1 G_{1} be the first Frobenius kernel, and G ( F p ) G({\mathbb F}_{p}) be the corresponding finite Chevalley group. Let M M be a rational G G -module. In this paper we relate the support variety of M M over the first Frobenius kernel with the support variety of M M over the group algebra k G ( F p ) kG({\mathbb F}_{p}) . This provides an answer to a question of Parshall. Applications of our new techniques are presented, which allow us to extend results of Alperin-Mason and Janiszczak-Jantzen, and to calculate the dimensions of support varieties for finite Chevalley groups.

Abstract

Let G be a reductive algebraic group scheme defined over Fp and G1 be the first Frobenius kernel. For any dominant weight λ, one can construct the Weyl module V(λ). When p is a good prime for G, the G1-support variety of V(λ) was computed by Nakano, Parshall and Vella in [D.K. Nakano, B.J. Parshall, D.C. Vella, Support varieties for algebraic groups, J. Reine Angew. Math. 547 (2002) 15–49]. We complete this calculation by computing the G1-supports of the Weyl modules over fields of bad characteristic.

Abstract

Correlations between p and (p) over bar at transverse momenta typical of enhanced baryon production in Au + Au collisions are reported. The PHENIX experiment has measured same and opposite sign baryon pairs in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Correlated production of p and p with the trigger particle from the range 2.5 < p(T) < 4.0 GeV/c and the associated particle with 1.8 < p(T) < 2.5 GeV/c is observed to be nearly independent of the centrality of the collisions. Same sign pairs show no correlation at any centrality. The conditional yield of mesons triggered by baryons (and anti-baryons) and mesons in the same p(T) range rises with increasing centrality, except for the most central collisions, where baryons show a significantly smaller number of associated mesons. These data are consistent with a picture in which hard scattered partons produce correlated p and (p) over bar in the p(T) region of the baryon excess. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Let G be a simple simply connected affine algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p for an odd prime p . Let B be a Borel subgroup of G and U be its unipotent radical. In this paper, we determine the second cohomology groups of B and its Frobenius kernels for all simple B -modules. We also consider the standard induced modules obtained by inducing a simple B -module to G and compute all second cohomology groups of the Frobenius kernels of G for these induced modules. Also included is a calculation of the second ordinary Lie algebra cohomology group of Lie( U ) with coefficients in k .

Abstract

Jet production rates are measured in p+p and d+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV recorded in 2008 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Jets are reconstructed using the R=0.3 anti-k_{t} algorithm from energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and charged tracks in multiwire proportional chambers, and the jet transverse momentum (p_{T}) spectra are corrected for the detector response. Spectra are reported for jets with 12p_{T}50 GeV/c, within a pseudorapidity acceptance of |η|0.3. The nuclear-modification factor (R_{dAu}) values for 0%-100% d+Au events are found to be consistent with unity, constraining the role of initial state effects on jet production. However, the centrality-selected R_{dAu} values and central-to-peripheral ratios (R_{CP}) show large, p_{T}-dependent deviations from unity, challenging the conventional models that relate hard-process rates and soft-particle production in collisions involving nuclei.

Abstract

We present the first measurement of elliptic ($v_2$) and triangular ($v_3$) flow in high-multiplicity $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in pseudorapidity, are compared in $^{3}$He$+$Au and in $p$$+$$p$ collisions and indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier components for the correlations observed in the $^{3}$He$+$Au system. The collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic $v_2$ and triangular $v_3$ anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding event planes. The $v_2$ values are comparable to those previously measured in $d$$+$Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. Comparison with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models where the hot spots created by the impact of the three $^{3}$He nucleons on the Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems.

Abstract

We present a systematic study of charged-pion and kaon interferometry in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The kaon mean source radii are found to be larger than pion radii in the outward and longitudinal directions for the same transverse mass; this difference increases for more central collisions. The azimuthal-angle dependence of the radii was measured with respect to the second-order event plane and similar oscillations of the source radii were found for pions and kaons. Hydrodynamic models qualitatively describe the similar oscillations of the mean source radii for pions and kaons, but they do not fully describe the transverse-mass dependence of the oscillations.

Abstract

We have studied the dependence of azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$ for inclusive and identified charged hadrons in Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions on collision energy, species, and centrality. The values of $v_2$ as a function of transverse momentum $p_T$ and centrality in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200~GeV and 62.4~GeV are the same within uncertainties. However, in Cu$+$Cu collisions we observe a decrease in $v_2$ values as the collision energy is reduced from 200 to 62.4~GeV. The decrease is larger in the more peripheral collisions. By examining both Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions we find that $v_2$ depends both on eccentricity and the number of participants, $N_{\rm part}$. We observe that $v_2$ divided by eccentricity ($\varepsilon$) monotonically increases with $N_{\rm part}$ and scales as ${N_{\rm part}^{1/3}}$. The Cu$+$Cu data at 62.4 GeV falls below the other scaled $v_{2}$ data. For identified hadrons, $v_2$ divided by the number of constituent quarks $n_q$ is independent of hadron species as a function of transverse kinetic energy $KE_T=m_T-m$ between $0.1

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the centrality dependence of the direct photon yield from Au+Au collisions at sNN−−−√=200 GeV down to pT=0.4 GeV/c. Photons are detected via photon conversions to e+e− pairs and an improved technique is applied that minimizes the systematic uncertainties that usually limit direct photon measurements, in particular at low pT. We find an excess of direct photons above the Ncoll-scaled yield measured in p+p collisions. This excess yield is well described by an exponential distribution with an inverse slope of about 240MeV/c in the pT range 0.6–2.0 GeV/c. While the shape of the pT distribution is independent of centrality within the experimental uncertainties, the yield increases rapidly with increasing centrality, scaling approximately with Nαpart, where α=1.38±0.03(stat)±0.07(syst).

Abstract

We present azimuthal angular correlations between charged hadrons and energy deposited in calorimeter towers in central d+Au and minimum bias p+p collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. The charged hadron is measured at midrapidity |η| 2.75 is observed in d+Au collisions. Using the event plane method applied to the Au-going energy distribution, we extract the anisotropy strength v_{2} for inclusive charged hadrons at midrapidity up to p_{T}=4.5 GeV/c. We also present the measurement of v_{2} for identified π^{±} and (anti)protons in central d+Au collisions, and observe a mass-ordering pattern similar to that seen in heavy-ion collisions. These results are compared with viscous hydrodynamic calculations and measurements from p+Pb at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. The magnitude of the mass ordering in d+Au is found to be smaller than that in p+Pb collisions, which may indicate smaller radial flow in lower energy d+Au collisions.

We present measurements of electrons and positrons from the semileptonic decays of heavy-flavor hadrons at midrapidity (|y|< 0.35) in Au+Au collisions at sNN−−−−√=62.4 GeV. The data were collected in 2010 by the PHENIX experiment that included the new hadron-blind detector. Abstract

The standard model (SM) of particle physics is spectacularly successful, yet the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment (g−2)μ deviates from SM calculations by 3.6σ. Several theoretical models attribute this to the existence of a “dark photon,” an additional U(1) gauge boson, which is weakly coupled to ordinary photons. The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has searched for a dark photon, U, in π0,η→γe+e− decays and obtained upper limits of O(2×10−6) on U−γ mixing at 90% C.L. for the mass range 30

Abstract

Measurements of bottomonium production in heavy-ion and p + p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are presented. The inclusive yield of the three states, (1S + 2S + 3S), was measured in the PHENIX experiment via electron-positron decay pairs at midrapidity for Au + Au and p + p collisions at root sNN = 200 GeV. The (1S + 2S + 3S) -> e(+)e(-) differential cross section at midrapidity was found to be B(ee)d sigma/dy = 108 +/- 38 (stat) +/- 15 (syst) +/- 11 (luminosity) pb in p + p collisions. The nuclear modification factor in the 30% most central Au + Au collisions indicates a suppression of the total. state yield relative to the extrapolation from p + p collision data. The suppression is consistent with measurements made by STAR at RHIC and at higher energies by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.

Abstract

We present midrapidity charged-pion invariant cross sections, the ratio of the pi(-) to pi(+) cross sections and the charge-separated double-spin asymmetries in polarized p + p collisions at root s = p + 200 GeV. While the cross section measurements are consistent within the errors of next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative quantum chromodynamics predictions (pQCD), the same calculations overestimate the ratio of the charged-pion cross sections. This discrepancy arises from the cancellation of the substantial systematic errors associated with the NLO-pQCD predictions in the ratio and highlights the constraints these data will place on flavor-dependent pion fragmentation functions. The charge-separated pion asymmetries presented here sample an x range of similar to 0.03-0.16 and provide unique information on the sign of the gluon-helicity distribution.

Abstract

The representation theory of semisimple algebraic groups over the complex numbers (equivalently, semisimple complex Lie algebras or Lie groups, or real compact Lie groups) and the questions of whether a given complex representation is symplectic or orthogonal have been solved since at least the 1950s. Similar results for Weyl modules of split reductive groups over fields of characteristic different from z hold by using similar proofs. This paper considers analogues of these results for simple, induced, and tilting modules of split reductive groups over fields of prime characteristic as well as a complete answer for Weyl modules over fields of characteristic 2.

Abstract

We report a measurement of e+e− pairs from semileptonic heavy-flavor decays in d+Au collisions at sNN−−−√=200 GeV. By exploring the mass and transverse-momentum dependence of the yield, the bottom decay contribution can be isolated from charm, and quantified by comparison to pythia and mc@nlo simulations. The resulting bb¯-production cross section is σdAubb¯=1.37±0.28(stat)±0.46(syst) mb, which is equivalent to a nucleon-nucleon cross section of σNNbb=3.4±0.8(stat)±1.1(syst)μb.
