The reliability of Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) is measured in terms of energy consumption (EC), end-to-end delay(E2E) and packet delivery ratio (PDR). The adverse effects of channel may cause data loss. Reducing delay up to possible extend improves the reliability of the network, also increasing the number of nodes in a particular network increase reliability. Besides, increasing the number of nodes improve reliability but also increase power consumption. In order to overcome these shortcomings, the two routing protocols are proposed in this paper, namely Delay and Reliability Aware Routing (DRAR) protocol and Cooperative Delay and Reliability Aware Routing (Co-DRAR) protocol for UWSNs. In DRAR protocol, network is divided into two equal regions where two sink nodes(SNs) are positioned at upper region of the network and two SNs are placed at the mid region of the network. The protocol choose the relay node based on residual energy (RE), distance and Bit Error Rate (BER). These parameters protect the data packets from corruption and also provide stable path (where nodes remain active for longer period and do not die quickly). The protocol uses single link and may get worse sometimes while changing channel circumstances. To address this problem, cooperative routing scheme is added to DRAR protocol in order to developed its enhanced version known as Co-DRAR protocol. The protocol works by allowing the destination to receive multiple copies of data packets in order to decide the quality of packets. The proposed protocols DRAR and Co-DRAR perform routing irrespective to geographical position of sensors nodes conversely to the some of conventional routing protocols that's way our propose protocol better perform than the well-known protocol i.e. Depth base routing (DBR) in terms of EC, E2E, PDR, dead nodes, packet drop ratio and number of alive nodes (ANs).

Human hand gestures are becoming one of the most important, intuitive, and essential means of recognizing sign language. Sign language is used to convey different meanings through visual-manual methods. Hand gestures help the hearing impaired to communicate. Nevertheless, it is very difficult to achieve a high recognition rate of hand gestures due to the environment and physical anatomy of human beings such as light condition, hand size, position, and uncontrolled environment. Moreover, the recognition of appropriate gestures is currently considered a major challenge. In this context, this paper proposes a probabilistic soft voting-based ensemble model to recognize Bengali sign gestures. We have divided this study into pre-processing, data augmentation and ensemble model-based voting process, and classification for gesture recognition. The purpose of pre-processing is to remove noise from input images, resize it, and segment hand gestures. Data augmentation is applied to create a larger database for in-depth model training. Finally, the ensemble model consists of a support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and convolution neural network (CNN) is used to train and classify gestures. Whereas, the ReLu activation function is used in CNN to solve neuron death problems and to accelerate RF classification through principal component analysis (PCA). A Bengali Sign Number Dataset named “BSN-Dataset” is proposed for model performance. The proposed technique enhances sign gesture recognition capabilities by utilizing segmentation, augmentation, and soft-voting classifiers which have obtained an average of 99.50% greater performance than CNN, RF, and SVM individually, as well as significantly more accuracy than existing systems.

An automated sleep stage categorization can readily face noise-contaminated EEG recordings, just as other signal processing applications. Therefore, the denoising of the contaminated signals is inevitable to ensure a reliable analysis of the EEG signals. In this research work, an empirical mode decomposition is used in combination with stacked autoencoders to conduct automatic sleep stage classification with reliable analytical performance. Due to the decomposition of the composite signal into several intrinsic mode functions, empirical mode decomposition offers an effective solution for denoising non-stationary signals such as EEG. Preliminary results showed that through these intrinsic modes, a signal with a high signal-to-noise ratio can be obtained, which can be used for further analysis with confidence. Therefore, later, when statistical features were extracted from the denoised signals and were classified using stacked autoencoders, improved results were obtained for Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, Stage 4, and REM stage EEG signals using this combination.

The ample amount of information from hyperspectral image (HSI) bands allows the non-destructive detection and recognition of earth objects. However, dimensionality reduction (DR) of hyperspectral images (HSI) is required before classification as the classifier may suffer from the curse of dimensionality. Therefore, dimensionality reduction plays a significant role in HSI data analysis (e.g., effective processing and seamless interpretation). In this article, a sophisticated technique established as t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (tSNE) following the dimension reduction along with a blended CNN was implemented to improve the visualization and characterization of HSI. In the procedure, first, we employed principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce the HSI dimensions and remove non-linear consistency features between the wavelengths to project them to a smaller scale. Then we proposed tSNE to preserve the local and global pixel relationships and check the HSI information visually and experimentally. Lastly, it yielded two-dimensional data, improving the visualization and classification accuracy compared to other standard dimensionality-reduction algorithms. Finally, we employed deep-learning-based CNN to classify the reduced and improved HSI intra- and inter-band relationship-feature vector. The evaluation performance of 95.21% accuracy and 6.2% test loss proved the superiority of the proposed model compared to other state-of-the-art DR reduction algorithms.

Electroencephalography (EEG) captures the electrical activities of human brain. It is an easy and cost effective tool to characterize motor imager (MI) task used in brain computer interface (BCI) implementation. The MI task is represented by short time trial of multichannel EEG. In this paper, the raw EEG trial is regenerated using narrowband signals obtained from individual channel. Each channel of EEG trial is decomposed into a set of subband signals using multivariate discrete wavelet transform. The selected subbands are organized in two different ways namely vertical arrangement of subbands (VaS) and horizontal arrangement of subbands (HaS) to regenerate the trials. The features are extracted from each of the arrangements using common spatial pattern (CSP). An optimum number of features are used to classify the motor imagery tasks represented by EEG trials. The effectiveness of two classifiers- linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and support vector machine (SVM) are studied. The performances of the proposed methods are evaluated using publicly available benchmark datasets. The experimental results show that it performs better than the recently developed algorithms.

RNA-Seq has made significant contributions to various fields, particularly in cancer research. Recent studies on differential gene expression analysis and the discovery of novel cancer biomarkers have extensively used RNA-Seq data. New biomarker identification is essential for moving cancer research forward, and early cancer diagnosis improves patients' chances of recovery and increases life expectancy. There is an urgency and scope of improvement in both sections. Many cognitive elements are involved in handwriting. However, it has not yet been clarified how handwriting changes as cognitive ability improves. This study is a preliminary study of the cognitive activity of handwriting and attempts to clarify the changes in handwriting between children and adults. This study investigated the relationship between development changes in writing dynamics and the tendency of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder/autism spectrum disorder (ADHD / ASD) in typical developing participants. This study is a preliminary study of handwritten cognitive activity and attempts to reveal changes in handwriting between children and adults. We also investigated the relationship between ADHD, ASD tendency, and writing dynamics, where cognitive specificity is pointed out, in participants with typical development.A pen tablet was used to examine developmental changes in writing dynamics. Participants included 27 children and 26 adults. They wrote 30 hiragana words dictated by a Japanese woman on a pen tablet. The write process data were collected on writing time, writing pressure, on-screen coordinates, and pen angle, from the writing process. In addition, participants answered a questionnaire to investigate trends in developmental disorders. We analyzed the writing dynamics of hiragana characters to investigate the differences between children and adults. They differed in writing speed which suggested developmental changes in writing dynamics. Correlation with developmental disorders suggests that ASD and ADHD affect writing dynamics. Writing dynamics showed the specificity of ASD and ADHD, which suggests that it may serve as an index for screening these conditions.

Sign language (SL) recognition is intended to connect deaf people with the general population via a variety of perspectives, experiences, and skills that serve as a basis for the development of human-computer interaction. Hand gesture-based SL recognition encompasses a wide range of human capabilities and perspectives. The efficiency of hand gesture performance is still challenging due to the complexity of varying levels of illumination, diversity, multiple aspects, self-identifying parts, different shapes, sizes, and complex backgrounds. In this context, we present an American Sign Language alphabet recognition system that translates sign gestures into text and creates a meaningful sentence from continuously performed gestures. We propose a segmentation technique for hand gestures and present a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the fusion of features. The input image is captured directly from a video via a low-cost device such as a webcam and is pre-processed by a filtering and segmentation technique, for example the Otsu method. Following this, a CNN is used to extract the features, which are then fused in a fully connected layer. To classify and recognize the sign gestures, a well-known classifier such as Softmax is used. A dataset is proposed for this work that contains only static images of hand gestures, which were collected in a laboratory environment. An analysis of the results shows that our proposed system achieves better recognition accuracy than other state-of-the-art systems.

Oral health plays an important role in people’s quality of life as it is related to eating, talking, and smiling. In recent years, many studies have utilized artificial intelligence for oral health care. Many studies have been published on tooth identification or recognition of dental diseases using X-ray images, but studies with RGB images are rarely found. In this paper, we propose a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model that classifies teeth with periodontal diseases from optical color images captured in front of the mouth. A novel network module with one-dimensional convolutions in parallel was proposed and compared to the conventional models including ResNet152. In results, the proposed model achieved 11.45% higher than ResNet152 model, and it was proved that the proposed structure enhanced the training performances, especially when the amount of training data was insufficient. This paper shows the possibility of utilizing optical color images for the detection of periodontal diseases, which may lead to a mobile oral healthcare system in the future.

Air-writing is a modern human–computer interaction technology that allows participants to write words or letters with finger or hand movements in free space in a simple and intuitive manner. Air-writing recognition is a particular case of gesture recognition in which gestures can be matched to write characters and digits in the air. Air-written characters show extensive variations depending on the various writing styles of participants and their speed of articulation, which presents quite a difficult task for effective character recognition. In order to solve these difficulties, this current work proposes an air-writing system using a web camera. The proposed system consists of two parts: alphabetic recognition and digit recognition. In order to assess our proposed system, two character datasets were used: an alphabetic dataset and a numeric dataset. We collected samples from 17 participants and asked each participant to write alphabetic characters (A to Z) and numeric digits (0 to 9) about 5–10 times. At the same time, we recorded the position of the fingertips using MediaPipe. As a result, we collected 3166 samples for the alphabetic dataset and 1212 samples for the digit dataset. First, we preprocessed the dataset and then created two datasets: image data and padding sequential data. The image data were fed into the convolution neural networks (CNN) model, whereas the sequential data were fed into bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM). After that, we combined these two models and trained again with 5-fold cross-validation in order to increase the character recognition accuracy. In this work, this combined model is referred to as a hybrid deep learning model. Finally, the experimental results showed that our proposed system achieved an alphabet recognition accuracy of 99.3% and a digit recognition accuracy of 99.5%. We also validated our proposed system using another publicly available 6DMG dataset. Our proposed system provided better recognition accuracy compared to the existing system.

The act of writing letters or words in free space with body movements is known as air-writing. Air-writing recognition is a special case of gesture recognition in which gestures correspond to characters and digits written in the air. Air-writing, unlike general gestures, does not require the memorization of predefined special gesture patterns. Rather, it is sensitive to the subject and language of interest. Traditional air-writing requires an extra device containing sensor(s), while the wide adoption of smart-bands eliminates the requirement of the extra device. Therefore, air-writing recognition systems are becoming more flexible day by day. However, the variability of signal duration is a key problem in developing an air-writing recognition model. Inconsistent signal duration is obvious due to the nature of the writing and data-recording process. To make the signals consistent in length, researchers attempted various strategies including padding and truncating, but these procedures result in significant data loss. Interpolation is a statistical technique that can be employed for time-series signals to ensure minimum data loss. In this paper, we extensively investigated different interpolation techniques on seven publicly available air-writing datasets and developed a method to recognize air-written characters using a 2D-CNN model. In both user-dependent and user-independent principles, our method outperformed all the state-of-the-art methods by a clear margin for all datasets.
