Throughput and energy efficiency in 3-way relay channels are studied in this paper. Unlike previous contributions, we consider a circular message exchange. First, an outer bound and achievable sum rate expressions for different relaying protocols are derived for 3-way relay channels. The sum capacity is characterized for certain SNR regimes. Next, leveraging the derived achievable sum rate expressions, cooperative and competitive maximization of the energy efficiency are considered. For the cooperative case, both low-complexity and globally optimal algorithms for joint power allocation at the users and at the relay are designed so as to maximize the system global energy efficiency. For the competitive case, a game theoretic approach is taken, and it is shown that the best response dynamics is guaranteed to converge to a Nash equilibrium. A power consumption model for mmWave board-to-board communications is developed, and numerical results are provided to corroborate and provide insight on the theoretical findings., Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications

Interference alignment (IA) is a promising technique to efficiently mitigate interference and to enhance the capacity of a wireless communication network. This paper proposes a grouping-based interference alignment (GIA) with optimized IA-Cell assignment for the multiple cells interfering multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC) network under limited feedback. This work consists of three main parts: 1) a complete study (including some new improvements) of the GIA with respect to the degrees of freedom (DoF) and optimal linear transceiver design is performed, which allows for low-complexity and distributed implementation; 2) based on the GIA, the concept of IA-Cell assignment is introduced. Three IA-Cell assignment algorithms are proposed for the setup with different backhaul overhead and their DoF and rate performance is investigated; 3) the performance of the proposed GIA algorithms is studied under limited feedback of IA precoders. To enable efficient feedback, a dynamic feedback bit allocation (DBA) problem is formulated and solved in closed-form. The practical implementation, the required backhaul overhead, and the complexity of the proposed algorithms are analyzed. We investigate the problem of secure communications in a Gaussian multi-way relay channel applying the compute-and-forward scheme using nested lattice codes. All nodes employ half-duplex operation and can exchange confidential messages only via an untrusted relay. The relay is assumed to be honest but curious, i.e., an eavesdropper that conforms to the system rules and applies the intended relaying scheme. We start with the general case of the single-input multiple-output (SIMO) L-user multi-way relay channel and provide an achievable secrecy rate region under a weak secrecy criterion. We show that the securely achievable sum rate is equivalent to the difference between the computation rate and the multiple access channel (MAC) capacity. Particularly, we show that all nodes must encode their messages such that the common computation rate tuple falls outside the MAC capacity region of the relay. We provide results for the single-input single-output (SISO) and the multiple-input single-input (MISO) L-user multi-way relay channel as well as the two-way relay channel. We discuss these results and show the dependency between channel realization and achievable secrecy rate. The evolution of cellular networks is driven by the dream of ubiquitous wireless connectivity: Any data service is instantly accessible everywhere. With each generation of cellular networks, we have moved closer to this wireless dream; first by delivering wireless access to voice communications, then by providing wireless data services, and recently by delivering a WiFi-like experience with wide-area coverage and user mobility management. The support for high data rates has been the main objective in recent years, as seen from the academic focus on sum-rate optimization and the efforts from standardization bodies to meet the peak rate requirements specified in IMT-Advanced. In contrast, a variety of metrics/objectives are put forward in the technological preparations for 5G networks: higher peak rates, improved coverage with uniform user experience, higher reliability and lower latency, better energy efficiency, lower-cost user devices and services, better scalability with number of devices, etc. These multiple objectives are coupled, often in a conflicting manner such that improvements in one objective lead to degradation in the other objectives. Hence, the design of future networks calls for new optimization tools that properly handle the existence and tradeoffs between multiple objectives. In this article, we provide a review of multi-objective optimization (MOO), which is a mathematical framework to solve design problems with multiple conflicting objectives. (...) We provide a survey of the basic definitions, properties, and algorithmic tools in MOO. This reveals how signal processing algorithms are used to visualize the inherent conflicts between 5G performance objectives, thereby allowing the network designer to understand the possible operating points and how to balance the objectives in an efficient and satisfactory way. In this paper, we consider energy efficient multiuser scheduling. Packet loss tolerance of the applications is exploited to minimize average system energy. There is a constraint on average packet drop rate and maximum number of packets dropped successively (bursty loss). A finite buffer size is assumed. We propose a scheme which schedules the users opportunistically according to the channel conditions, packet loss constraints and buffer size parameters. We assume imperfect channel state information at the transmitter side and analyze the scheme in large user limit using stochastic optimization techniques. First, we optimize system energy for a fixed buffer size which results in a corresponding statistical guarantee on successive packet drop. Then, we determine the minimum buffer size to achieve a target (improved) energy efficiency for the same (or better) statistical guarantee. We show that buffer size can be traded effectively to achieve system energy efficiency for target statistical guarantees on packet loss parameters., Comment: Proc. Cooperation between the primary and secondary systems can improve the spectrum efficiency in cognitive radio networks. The key idea is that the secondary system helps to boost the primary system's performance by relaying and in return the primary system provides more opportunities for the secondary system to access the spectrum. In contrast to most of existing works that only consider information cooperation, this paper studies joint information and energy cooperation between the two systems, i.e., the primary transmitter sends information for relaying and feeds the secondary system with energy as well. This is particularly useful when the secondary transmitter has good channel quality to the primary receiver but is energy constrained. We propose and study three schemes that enable this cooperation. Firstly, we assume there exists an ideal backhaul between the two systems for information and energy transfer. We then consider two wireless information and energy transfer schemes from the primary transmitter to the secondary transmitter using power splitting and time splitting energy harvesting techniques, respectively. For each scheme, the optimal and zero-forcing solutions are derived. Simulation results demonstrate promising performance gain for both systems due to the additional energy cooperation. It is also revealed that the power splitting scheme can achieve larger rate region than the time splitting scheme when the efficiency of the energy transfer is sufficiently large., Comment: 13 page, 9 figures. The multiple-input single-output interference channel is considered. Each transmitter is assumed to know the channels between itself and all receivers perfectly and the receivers are assumed to treat interference as additive noise. In this setting, noncooperative transmission does not take into account the interference generated at other receivers which generally leads to inefficient performance of the links. To improve this situation, we study cooperation between the links using coalitional games. The players (links) in a coalition either perform zero forcing transmission or Wiener filter precoding to each other. The $\epsilon$-core is a solution concept for coalitional games which takes into account the overhead required in coalition deviation. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong and weak $\epsilon$-core of our coalitional game not to be empty with zero forcing transmission. Since, the $\epsilon$-core only considers the possibility of joint cooperation of all links, we study coalitional games in partition form in which several distinct coalitions can form. We propose a polynomial time distributed coalition formation algorithm based on coalition merging and prove that its solution lies in the coalition structure stable set of our coalition formation game. Design of energy efficient protocols for modern wireless systems has become an important area of research. In this paper, we propose a distributed optimization algorithm for the channel assignment problem for multiple interfering transceiver pairs that cannot communicate with each other. We first modify the auction algorithm for maximal energy efficiency and show that the problem can be solved without explicit message passing using the carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) protocols. We then develop a novel scheme by converting the channel assignment problem into perfect matchings on bipartite graphs. The proposed scheme improves the energy efficiency and does not require any explicit message passing or a shared memory between the users. We derive bounds on the convergence rate and show that the proposed algorithm converges faster than the distributed auction algorithm and achieves near-optimal performance under Rayleigh fading channels. We also present an asymptotic performance analysis of the fast matching algorithm for energy efficient resource allocation and prove the optimality for large enough number of users and number of channels. A framework for energy-efficient resource allocation in a single-user, amplify-and-forward relay-assisted MIMO system is devised in this paper. Previous results in this area have focused on rate maximization or sum power minimization problems, whereas fewer results are available when bits/Joule energy efficiency (EE) optimization is the goal. The performance metric to optimize is the ratio between the system's achievable rate and the total consumed power. The optimization is carried out with respect to the source and relay precoding matrices, subject to QoS and power constraints. Such a challenging non-convex problem is tackled by means of fractional programming and and alternating maximization algorithms, for various CSI assumptions at the source and relay. In particular the scenarios of perfect CSI and those of statistical CSI for either the source-relay or the relay-destination channel are addressed. Moreover, sufficient conditions for beamforming optimality are derived, which is useful in simplifying the system design. Numerical results are provided to corroborate the validity of the theoretical findings.

The multiple-input multiple-output interference channel is considered with perfect channel information at the transmitters and single-user decoding receivers. With all transmissions restricted to single stream beamforming, we consider the problem of finding all Pareto optimal rate-tuples in the achievable rate region. The problem is cast as a rate profile optimization problem. Due to its nonconvexity, we resort to an alternating approach: For fixed receivers, optimal transmission is known. For fixed transmitters, we show that optimal receive beamforming is a solution to an inverse field of values problem. In heterogeneous dense networks where spectrum is shared, users privacy remains one of the major challenges. On a multi-antenna relay-assisted multi-carrier interference channel, each user shares the frequency and spatial resources with all other users. When the receivers are not only interested in their own signals but also in eavesdropping other users' signals, the cross talk on the frequency and spatial channels becomes information leakage. In this paper, we propose a novel secrecy rate enhancing relay strategy that utilizes both frequency and spatial resources, termed as information leakage neutralization. To this end, the relay matrix is chosen such that the effective channel from the transmitter to the colluding eavesdropper is equal to the negative of the effective channel over the relay to the colluding eavesdropper and thus the information leakage to zero. Interestingly, the optimal relay matrix in general is not block-diagonal which encourages users' encoding over the frequency channels. We proposed two information leakage neutralization strategies, namely efficient information leakage neutralization (EFFIN) and optimized information leakage neutralization (OPTIN). EFFIN provides a simple and efficient design of relay processing matrix and precoding matrices at the transmitters in the scenario of limited power and computational resources. OPTIN, despite its higher complexity, provides a better sum secrecy rate performance by optimizing the relay processing matrix and the precoding matrices jointly. A multiple-antenna amplify-and-forward two-hop interference network with multiple links and multiple relays is considered. We optimize transmit precoders, receive decoders and relay AF matrices to maximize the achievable sum rate. Under per user and total relay sum power constraints, we propose an efficient algorithm to maximize the total signal to total interference plus noise ratio (TSTINR). Computational complexity analysis shows that our proposed algorithm for TSTINR has lower complexity than the existing weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) algorithm. We analyze and confirm by simulations that the TSTINR, WMMSE and the total leakage interference plus noise (TLIN) minimization models with per user and total relay sum power constraints can only transmit a single data stream for each user. Thus we propose a novel multiple stream TSTINR model with requirement of orthogonal columns for precoders, in order to support multiple data streams and thus utilize higher Degrees of Freedom. Multiple data streams and larger multiplexing gains are guaranteed. Simulation results show that for single stream models, our TSTINR algorithm outperforms the TLIN algorithm generally and outperforms WMMSE in medium to high Signal-to-Noise-Ratio scenarios; the system sum rate significantly benefits from multiple data streams in medium to high SNR scenarios.

On a single-input-single-out (SISO) interference channel (IC), conventional non-cooperative strategies encourage players selfishly maximizing their transmit data rates, neglecting the deficit of performance caused by and to other players. In the case of proper complex Gaussian noise, the maximum entropy theorem shows that the best-response strategy is to transmit with proper signals (symmetric complex Gaussian symbols). However, such equilibrium leads to degrees-of-freedom zero due to the saturation of interference. With improper signals (asymmetric complex Gaussian symbols), an extra freedom of optimization is available. In this paper, we study the impact of improper signaling on the 2-user SISO IC. We explore the achievable rate region with non-cooperative strategies by computing a Nash equilibrium of a non-cooperative game with improper signaling. Then, assuming cooperation between players, we study the achievable rate region of improper signals. We propose the usage of improper rank one signals for their simplicity and ease of implementation. Despite their simplicity, rank one signals achieve close to optimal sum rate compared to full rank improper signals. We characterize the Pareto boundary, the outer-boundary of the achievable rate region, of improper rank one signals with a single real-valued parameter; we compute the closed-form solution of the Pareto boundary with the non-zero-forcing strategies, the maximum sum rate point and the max-min fairness solution with zero-forcing strategies. Analysis on the extreme SNR regimes shows that proper signals maximize the wide-band slope of spectral efficiency whereas improper signals optimize the high-SNR power offset., Comment: accepted, to appear in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications

In a multi-user wireless network equipped with multiple relay nodes, some relays are more intelligent than other relay nodes. The intelligent relays are able to gather channel state information, perform linear processing and forward signals whereas the dumb relays is only able to serve as amplifiers. As the dumb relays are oblivious to the source and destination nodes, the wireless network can be modeled as a relay network with *smart instantaneous relay* only: the signals of source-destination arrive at the same time as source-relay-destination. Recently, instantaneous relaying is shown to improve the degrees-of-freedom of the network as compared to classical cut-set bound. In this paper, we study an achievable rate region and its boundary of the instantaneous interference relay channel in the scenario of (a) uninformed non-cooperative source-destination nodes (source and destination nodes are not aware of the existence of the relay and are non-cooperative) and (b) informed and cooperative source-destination nodes. Further, we examine the performance of interference neutralization: a relay strategy which is able to cancel interference signals at each destination node in the air. We observe that interference neutralization, although promise to achieve desired degrees-of-freedom, may not be feasible if relay has limited power. We consider a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel (IC), where a single data stream per user is transmitted and each receiver treats interference as noise. The paper focuses on the open problem of computing the outermost boundary (so-called Pareto boundary-PB) of the achievable rate region under linear transceiver design. The Pareto boundary consists of the strict PB and non-strict PB. For the two user case, we compute the non-strict PB and the two ending points of the strict PB exactly. For the strict PB, we formulate the problem to maximize one rate while the other rate is fixed such that a strict PB point is reached. To solve this non-convex optimization problem which results from the hard-coupled two transmit beamformers, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm. Furthermore, we extend the algorithm to the multi-user scenario and show convergence. Numerical simulations illustrate that the proposed algorithm computes a sequence of well-distributed operating points that serve as a reasonable and complete inner bound of the strict PB compared with existing methods., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. We consider $K$ links operating concurrently in the same spectral band. Each transmitter has multiple antennas, while each receiver uses a single antenna. This setting corresponds to the multiple-input single-output interference channel. We assume perfect channel state information at the single-user decoding receivers whereas the transmitters only have estimates of the true channels. The channel estimation errors are assumed to be bounded in elliptical regions whose geometry is known at the transmitters. Robust beamforming optimizes worst-case received power gains, and a Pareto optimal point is a worst-case achievable rate tuple from which it is impossible to increase a link's performance without degrading the performance of another. We characterize the robust beamforming vectors necessary to operate at any Pareto optimal point. Moreover, these beamforming vectors are parameterized by $K(K-1)$ real-valued parameters. We analyze the system's spectral efficiency at high and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Zero forcing transmission achieves full multiplexing gain at high SNR only if the estimation errors scale linearly with inverse SNR. If the errors are SNR independent, then single-user transmission is optimal at high SNR. At low SNR, robust maximum ratio transmission optimizes the minimum energy per bit for reliable communication. We study the conflict between two links in a multiple-input single-output interference channel. This setting is strictly competitive and can be related to perfectly competitive market models. In such models, general equilibrium theory is used to determine equilibrium measures that are Pareto optimal. First, we consider the links to be consumers that can trade goods within themselves. The goods in our setting correspond to beamforming vectors. We utilize the conflict representation of the consumers in the Edgeworth box, a graphical tool that depicts the allocation of the goods for the two consumers, to provide closed-form solution to all Pareto optimal outcomes. Afterwards, we model the situation between the links as a competitive market which additionally defines prices for the goods. The equilibrium in this economy is called Walrasian and corresponds to the prices that equate the demand to the supply of goods. We calculate the unique Walrasian equilibrium and propose a coordination process that is realized by an arbitrator which distributes the Walrasian prices to the consumers. The consumers then calculate in a decentralized manner their optimal demand corresponding to beamforming vectors that achieve the Walrasian equilibrium. This outcome is Pareto optimal and dominates the noncooperative outcome of the systems. Thus, based on the game theoretic model and solution concept, an algorithm for a distributed implementation of the beamforming problem in multiple-input single-output interference channels is provided., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures

The dramatic increase of network infrastructure comes at the cost of rapidly increasing energy consumption, which makes optimization of energy efficiency (EE) an important topic. Since EE is often modeled as the ratio of rate to power, we present a mathematical framework called fractional programming that provides insight into this class of optimization problems, as well as algorithms for computing the solution. The main idea is that the objective function is transformed to a weighted sum of rate and power. A generic problem formulation for systems dissipating transmit-independent circuit power in addition to transmit-dependent power is presented. We show that a broad class of EE maximization problems can be solved efficiently, provided the rate is a concave function of the transmit power. We elaborate examples of various system models including time-varying parallel channels. Rate functions with an arbitrary discrete modulation scheme are also treated. The examples considered lead to water-filling solutions, but these are different from the dual problems of power minimization under rate constraints and rate maximization under power constraints, respectively, because the constraints need not be active. We also demonstrate that if the solution to a rate maximization problem is known, it can be utilized to reduce the EE problem into a one-dimensional convex problem.

We consider settings in which T multi-antenna transmitters and K single-antenna receivers concurrently utilize the available communication resources. Each transmitter sends useful information only to its intended receivers and can degrade the performance of unintended systems. Here, we assume the performance measures associated with each receiver are monotonic with the received power gains. In general, the systems' joint operation is desired to be Pareto optimal. However, designing Pareto optimal resource allocation schemes is known to be difficult. In order to reduce the complexity of achieving efficient operating points, we show that it is sufficient to consider rank-1 transmit covariance matrices and propose a framework for determining the efficient beamforming vectors. These beamforming vectors are thereby also parameterized by T(K-1) real-valued parameters each between zero and one. The framework is based on analyzing each transmitter's power gain-region which is composed of all jointly achievable power gains at the receivers. The efficient beamforming vectors are on a specific boundary section of the power gain-region, and in certain scenarios it is shown that it is necessary to perform additional power allocation on the beamforming vectors. Correlated scattering occurs naturally in frequency-selective fading channels and its impact on the performance needs to be understood. In particular, we answer the question whether the uncorrelated scattering model leads to an optimistic or pessimistic estimation of the actual average capacity. In the paper, we use majorization for functions to show that the average rate with perfectly informed receiver is largest for uncorrelated scattering if the transmitter is uninformed. If the transmitter knows the channel statistics, it can exploit this knowledge. We show that for small SNR, the behavior is opposite, uncorrelated scattering leads to a lower bound on the average capacity.
