In 2003, comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko was selected as the new target of the Rosetta mission as the most suitable alternative to the original target, comet 46P/Wirtanen, on the basis of orbital considerations even though very little was known about the physical properties of its nucleus. In a matter of a few years and based on highly focused observational campaigns as well as thorough theoretical investigations, a detailed portrait of this nucleus has been established that will serve as a baseline for planning the Rosetta operations and observations. In this review article, we present a novel method to determine the size and shape of a cometary nucleus: several visible light curves were inverted to produce a size–scale free three–dimensional shape, the size scaling being imposed by a thermal light curve. The procedure converges to two solutions which are only marginally different. The nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko emerges as an irregular body with an effective radius (that of the sphere having the same volume) = 1.72 km and moderate axial ratios a/b = 1.26 and a/c = 1.5 to 1.6. The overall dimensions measured along the principal axis for the two solutions are 4.49–4.75 km, 3.54–3.77 km and 2.94–2.92 km. The nucleus is found to be in principal axis rotation with a period = 12.4–12.7 h. Merging all observational constraints allow us to specify two regions for the direction of the rotational axis of the nucleus: RA = 220°+50° −30° and Dec = −70° ± 10° (retrograde rotation) or RA = 40°+50° -30° and Dec = +70°± 10° (prograde), the better convergence of the various determinations presently favoring the first solution. The phase function, although constrained by only two data points, exhibits a strong opposition effect rather similar to that of comet 9P/Tempel 1. The definition of the disk–integrated albedo of an irregular body having a strong opposition effect raises problems, and the various alternatives led to a R-band geometric albedo in the range 0.045–0.060, consistent with our present knowledge of cometary nuclei. The active fraction is low, not exceeding ~ 7% at perihelion, and is probably limited to one or two active regions subjected to a strong seasonal effect, a picture coherent with the asymmetric behaviour of the coma. Our slightly downward revision of the size of the nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko resulting from the present analysis (with the correlative increase of the albedo compared to the originally assumed value of 0.04), and our best estimate of the bulk density of 370 kg m−3, lead to a mass of ~ 8 × 1012 kg which should ease the landing of Philae and insure the overall success of the Rosetta mission. The OSIRIS cameras (optical, spectroscopic, and infrared remote imaging system) onboard the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft observed comet 9P/Tempel 1 for 17 days continuously around the time of NASA's Deep Impact mission. The cyanide-to-water production ratio was slightly enhanced in the impact cloud, compared with that of normal comet activity. Dust particles were flowing outward in the coma at >160 meters per second, accelerated by the gas. The slope of the brightness increase showed a dip about 200 seconds after the impact. Nongravitational forces induced by sublimation of volatiles affect the rotational and orbital dynamics of comets. In addition to contributing to the improvement of ephemerides and of rotational models, nongravitational effects can help constrain the regional distribution and temporal evolution of cometary activity, which in turn provides input for the development of thermophysical and dust transport models. The Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, JAXA, will explore the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos. In addition to investigating the moons remotely and returning samples from Phobos, MMX will also deliver a small (about 25 kg) Rover to the surface of Phobos. The payload of the Rover consists of four scientific instruments: RAX, a Raman spectrometer to measure signatures of the mineralogical composition of the surface material, NavCam, a stereo pair of cameras to investigate the terrain and allow for navigation, miniRAD a radiometer to measure the surface brightness temperature of both, regolith and rocks, and two WheelCams which will observe the wheel-surface interface, and thus investigate the properties and dynamics of the regolith. The cameras, will serve both, technological and scientific needs. The rover will be deployed during the rehearsal phase of the landing operations for the main spacecraft and will thus land in proximity to the first sampling area. During its operational lifetime on Phobos (about 100 days), the in-situ measurements performed with the rover payload will provide scientific context for the returned samples, provide ground truth, study the surface heterogeneity and obtain information on the physical properties of undisturbed surface material. The MMX launch is planned for September 2024 and the Rover delivery is scheduled for 2027. MIRS is part of the French contribution to the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission that will be launched in 2024 by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). It is a near-infrared imaging spectrometer developed by the French Laboratory of Space Studies and Astrophysics Instrumentation (LESIA), of the Observatoire de Paris – PSL , with close cooperation and financial support from CNES. One of the major mission goals is to understand the origin of Phobos and Deimos, providing important insights into planetary formation and the transfer of matter in the region connecting the inner and outer solar system. During the four years of the mission, the MIRS control centre will provide precise sequencing of MIRS activities and guidance of its line of sight, with two main drivers: optimize scientific return and comply with the operability constraints of the instrument, the satellite and the system. In this perspective, observation strategies are designed, modelled and tested iteratively throughout all preparation phases of the mission. Discussions on concrete simulation results and illustrations improve mutual understanding, raise unexpressed needs and constraints and promote feedback on the efficiency of the proposed strategies. They also favour a global optimization of the entire system with the refinement of the trajectories and of the scheduling considering the seasons of the Martian system. The gravity field of a celestial body gives valuable insights into its fundamental properties such as its density and internal structure. The Doppler data collected by the Radio-Science Investigation (RSI) experiment of the Rosetta mission were previously used to determine the gravity field of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko up to degree 2 (Pätzold et al., 2016). In the present study we re-estimate the gravity field of 67P/C-G using not only RSI data as before, but also images data from Rosetta's OSIRIS camera. These data, converted into "landmark" observations, are complementary to RSI data. Therefore, the analysis of combined Doppler and optical data results in a significant improvement in the restitution of Rosetta's orbit and the determination of the comet gravity field with respect to previous work. Some coefficients of the comet's gravity field are now resolved up to degree 4. The mass and low degrees estimates are in fairly good agreement with those previously published, but the improvement in their accuracy (i.e. lower sigmas) as well as the better resolution (i.e. maximum degree) of the new gravity field suggests that the distribution of mass in the nucleus may not be uniform, contrary to what was previously thought. Moreover, we estimate a change in the mass of the comet attributed to ice sublimation at its orbital perihelion that is almost three times greater than that previously published. The new estimated mass loss is Δ M = 28. 0 ± 0. 29 × 1 0 9 kg , corresponding to 0.28% of the total mass of the comet. Thanks to a precise determination of the degree-1 gravity coefficients, we observe for the first time a motion of the center of mass of the comet by ∼ 35 m northward that could be explained by a more pronounced outgassing activity in the south of the comet due to the orientation of its spin axis relative to the Sun. The temporal evolution (before versus after perihelion) of the other estimated gravity coefficients and in particular degree-2 is more modest (0.8% for C 20 and 2% for C 22 , S 22). • We provide a new gravity field of Comet 67P-C/G up to degree 4. • We detect mass heterogeneity in the comet nucleus. • The loss of mass is reestimated at 0.28% of the comet's total mass. • We measure a 35 m northward shift of the comet's center of gravity after perihelion. We present a new photoclinometric reconstruction method based on the deformation of a 3D mesh. The optimization process of our method relies on a maximum-likelihood estimation with a density function measuring discrepancies between observed images and the corresponding synthetic images calculated from the progressively deformed 3D mesh. An input mesh is necessary and can be obtained from other methods or created by implementing a multiresolution scheme. We present a 3D shape model of an asteroid obtained by this method and compare it with the models obtained with two high-resolution 3D reconstruction techniques, stereophotogrammetry, and stereophotoclinometry. The Japanese MMX sample return mission to Phobos by JAXA will carry a rover developed by CNES and DLR that will be deployed on Phobos to perform in situ analysis of the Martian moon's surface properties. Past images of the surface of Phobos show that it is covered by a layer of regolith. However, the mechanical and compositional properties of this regolith are poorly constrained. In particular, from current remote images, very little is known regarding the particle sizes, their chemical composition, the packing density of the regolith as well as other parameters such as friction and cohesion that influence surface dynamics. Understanding the properties and dynamics of the regolith in the low-gravity environment of Phobos is important to trace back its history and surface evolution. Moreover, this information is also important to support the interpretation of data obtained by instruments onboard the main MMX spacecraft, and to minimize the risks involved in the spacecraft sampling operations. The instruments onboard the Rover are a Raman spectrometer (RAX), an infrared radiometer (miniRad), two forward-looking cameras for navigation and science purposes (NavCams), and two cameras observing the interactions of regolith and the rover wheels (WheelCams). The Rover will be deployed before the MMX spacecraft samples Phobos' surface and will be the first rover to drive on the surface of a Martian moon and in a very low gravity environment. CONSERT, a bistatic radar onboard the Rosetta spacecraft and its Philae lander, was designed to probe the nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko with radio waves at 90 MHz frequency. In 2016 September, the exact position of Philae was retrieved, within the region previously identified by CONSERT. This allowed us to revisit the measurements and improve our analysis of the properties of the interior, the results of which we present here. The relative permittivity of the materials is found to range from about 1.7 to 1.95 in the shallow subsurface (<25 m) and about 1.2 to 1.32 in the interior. These differences indicate different average densities between the shallow subsurface and the interior of comet. They can be explained by various physical phenomena such as different porosities, the possible compaction of surface materials, or even perhaps different proportions of the same materials. Cratering chronologies are used to derive the history of planetary bodies and assume an isotropic flux of impactors over the entire surface of the Moon. The impactor population is largely dominated by near-Earth-objects (NEOs) since ∼3.5 billion years ago. However, lunar impact probabilities from the currently known NEO population show an excess of impacts close to the poles compared to the equator as well as a latitudinal dependency of the approach angle of impactors. This is accompanied by a variation of the impact flux and speed with the distance from the apex due to the synchronicity of the lunar orbit around the Earth. Here, we compute the spatial dependency of the cratering rate produced by such variabilities and recalibrate the lunar chronology. We show that it allows to reconcile the crater density measured at mid-latitudes around the Chang'e-5 landing site with the age of the samples collected by this mission. Our updated chronology leads to differences in model ages of up to 30% compared to other chronology systems. The modeled cratering rate variability is then compared with the distribution of lunar craters younger than ∼1 Ma, 1 Ga and 4 Ga. The general trend of the cratering distribution is consistent with the one obtained from dynamical models of NEOs, thus potentially reflecting a nonuniform distribution of orbital parameters of ancient impactor populations, beyond 3.5 Ga ago, i.e., planetary leftovers and cometary bodies. If the nonuniformity of the cratering rate could be tested elsewhere in the Solar System, the recalibrated lunar chronology, corrected from spatial variations of the impact flux and approach conditions of impactors, could be extrapolated on other terrestrial bodies such as Mercury and Mars, at least over the last 3.5 billion years. We performed an investigation of a comet like porous surface to study how sub-surface sublimation with subsequent flow through the porous medium can lead to higher gas temperatures at the surface. A higher gas temperature of the emitted gas at the surface layer, compared to the sublimation temperature, will lead to higher gas speeds as the gas expands into the vacuum thus altering the flow properties on larger scales (kilometres away from the surface). Unlike previous models that have used modelled artificial structures, we used Earth rock samples with a porosity in the range 24–92% obtained from X-ray micro computed tomography (micro-CT) scans with resolution of some μm. Micro-CT scanning technology provides 3D images of the pore samples. The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method for the rarefied gas dynamics is directly applied on the digital rock samples in an unstructured mesh to determine the gas densities, temperatures and speeds within the porous medium and a few centimetres above the surface. The thicknesses of the rock samples were comparable to the diurnal thermal skin depth (5 cm). H 2 O was assumed to be the outgassing species. We correlated the coma temperatures and other properties of the flow with the rock porosities. The results are discussed as an input to analysis of data from the Microwave Instrument on Rosetta Orbiter (MIRO) on the 67P/Churyumov- Gerasimenko. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On the 12th of November 2014, The Rosetta Lander Philae became the first spacecraft to softly land on a comet nucleus. Due to the double failure of the cold gas hold-down thruster and the anchoring harpoons that should have fixed Philae to the surface, it spent approximately two hours bouncing over the comet surface to finally come at rest one km away from its target site. Nevertheless it was operated during the 57 h of its First Science Sequence. The FSS, performed with the two batteries, should have been followed by the Long Term Science Sequence but Philae was in a place not well illuminated and fell into hibernation. Yet, thanks to reducing distance to the Sun and to seasonal effect, it woke up at end of April and on 13th of June it contacted Rosetta again. To achieve this successful landing, an intense preparation work had been carried out mainly between August and November 2014 to select the targeted landing site and define the final landing trajectory. After the landing, the data collected during on-comet operations have been used to assess the final position and orientation of Philae, and to prepare the wake-up. This paper addresses the Flight Dynamics studies done in the scope of this landing preparation from Lander side, in close cooperation with the team at ESA, responsible for Rosetta, as well as for the reconstruction of the bouncing trajectory and orientation of the Lander after touchdown. The factors shaping cometary nuclei are still largely unknown, but could be the result of concurrent effects of evolutionary and primordial processes. The peculiar bilobed shape of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko may be the result of the fusion of two objects that were once separate or the result of a localized excavation by outgassing at the interface between the two lobes. Here we report that the comet's major lobe is enveloped by a nearly continuous set of strata, up to 650 metres thick, which are independent of an analogous stratified envelope on the minor lobe. Gravity vectors computed for the two lobes separately are closer to perpendicular to the strata than those calculated for the entire nucleus and adjacent to the neck separating the two lobes. Therefore comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is an accreted body of two distinct objects with 'onion-like' stratification, which formed before they merged. We conclude that gentle, low-velocity collisions occurred between two fully formed kilometre-sized cometesimals in the early stages of the Solar System. The notable structural similarities between the two lobes of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko indicate that the early-forming cometesimals experienced similar primordial stratified accretion, even though they formed independently. Spacecraft observations of atmosphereless Solar System bodies, combined with thermophysical modeling, provide important information about the thermal inertia and degree of surface roughness of these bodies. The thermophysical models rely on various methods of generating topography, the most common being the concave spherical segment. We here compare the properties of thermal emission for a number of different topographies – concave spherical segments, random Gaussians, fractals and parallel sinusoidal trenches – for various illumination and viewing geometries, degrees of surface roughness and wavelengths. We find that the thermal emission is strongly dependent on roughness type, even when the degrees of roughness are identical, for certain illumination and viewing geometries. The systematic usage of any single topography model may therefore bias determinations of thermal inertia and level of roughness. We outline strategies that may be employed during spacecraft observations to disentangle thermal inertia, level of roughness and type of topography. We also compare the numerically complex and time consuming full-scale thermophysical models with a simplified statistical approach, which is fairly easy to implement and quick to run. We conclude that the simplified statistical approach is similar to thermophysical models for cases tested here, which enables the user to analyze huge amounts of spectral data at a low numerical cost. Abstract: The nucleus of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 was first observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in December 1997 [Lamy, P., Toth, I., A''Hearn, M.F., Weaver, H., Weissman, P.R., 2001. Icarus 154, 337–344], but the temporal coverage was insufficient to determine its rotational period. Because the success of the Deep Impact mission was critically dependent on understanding the rotational state and approximate shape and size of the nucleus, we extensively re-observed 9P/Tempel 1, this time with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (HST/ACS), from May 7.9 to 9.5, 2004 (UT). At the mid-point of the observing window, the comet was 3.52 AU from the Sun, 4.03 AU from the Earth, and at a solar phase angle of 13.3°. The program was comprised of 18 separate visits, each one corresponding to an HST orbit filled with 3 ACS exposures of either 800 or 857 s duration with the F606W broadband filter. These very deep exposures revealed a star-like object, without any apparent coma. The light curve, defined by 49 data points, is characterized by a mean apparent V magnitude of 21.8 and an amplitude of 0.5 mag, indicating that we were viewing the varying cross-section of a rotating, elongated body. The periodicity was analyzed with seven different techniques yielding a rotational period in the range 39.40 to 43.00 h, and a mean value of (1σ). Using an albedo and a linear phase law with a coefficient , we determined an effective radius of 3.01 km; a possible prolate spheroid solution has semi-axes , and a minimum axial ratio . By comparing the light curves obtained in 1997 and in 2004, we were able to constrain the phase function of the nucleus. Finally, an upper limit of is set based on the non-detection of the coma. Abstract: The OSIRIS cameras on the Rosetta spacecraft observed Comet 9P/Tempel 1 from 5 days before to 10 days after it was hit by the Deep Impact projectile. The Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) monitored the cometary dust in 5 different filters. The Wide Angle Camera (WAC) observed through filters sensitive to emissions from OH, CN, Na, and OI together with the associated continuum. Before and after the impact the comet showed regular variations in intensity. The period of the brightness changes is consistent with the rotation period of Tempel 1. The overall brightness of Tempel 1 decreased by about 10% during the OSIRIS observations. The analysis of the impact ejecta shows that no new permanent coma structures were created by the impact. Most of the material moved with . Much of it left the comet in the form of icy grains which sublimated and fragmented within the first hour after the impact. The light curve of the comet after the impact and the amount of material leaving the comet ( of water ice and a presumably larger amount of dust) suggest that the impact ejecta were quickly accelerated by collisions with gas molecules. Therefore, the motion of the bulk of the ejecta cannot be described by ballistic trajectories, and the validity of determinations of the density and tensile strength of the nucleus of Tempel 1 with models using ballistic ejection of particles is uncertain. Comets spend most of their life in a low-temperature environment far from the Sun. They are therefore relatively unprocessed and maintain information about the formation conditions of the planetary system, but the structure and composition of their nuclei are poorly understood. Although in situ and remote measurements have derived the global properties of some cometary nuclei, little is known about their interiors. The Deep Impact mission shot a projectile into comet 9P/Tempel 1 in order to investigate its interior. Here we report the water vapour content (1.5 × 1032 water molecules or 4.5 × 106 kg) and the cross-section of the dust (330 km2 assuming an albedo of 0.1) created by the impact. The corresponding dust/ice mass ratio is probably larger than one, suggesting that comets are ‘icy dirtballs’ rather than ‘dirty snowballs’ as commonly believed. High dust velocities (between 110 m s-1 and 300 m s-1) imply acceleration in the comet's coma, probably by water molecules sublimated by solar radiation. We did not find evidence of enhanced activity of 9P/Tempel 1 in the days after the impact, suggesting that in general impacts of meteoroids are not the cause of cometary outbursts. Here we describe the novel, multi-point Comet Interceptor mission. It is dedicated to the exploration of a little-processed long-period comet, possibly entering the inner Solar System for the first time, or to encounter an interstellar object originating at another star. The objectives of the mission are to address the following questions: What are the surface composition, shape, morphology, and structure of the target object? What is the composition of the gas and dust in the coma, its connection to the nucleus, and the nature of its interaction with the solar wind? The mission was proposed to the European Space Agency in 2018, and formally adopted by the agency in June 2022, for launch in 2029 together with the Ariel mission. Comet Interceptor will take advantage of the opportunity presented by ESA's F-Class call for fast, flexible, low-cost missions to which it was proposed. The call required a launch to a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 point. The mission can take advantage of this placement to wait for the discovery of a suitable comet reachable with its minimum Δ V capability of 600  ms - 1 . Comet Interceptor will be unique in encountering and studying, at a nominal closest approach distance of 1000 km, a comet that represents a near-pristine sample of material from the formation of the Solar System. It will also add a capability that no previous cometary mission has had, which is to deploy two sub-probes - B1, provided by the Japanese space agency, JAXA, and B2 - that will follow different trajectories through the coma. While the main probe passes at a nominal 1000 km distance, probes B1 and B2 will follow different chords through the coma at distances of 850 km and 400 km, respectively. The result will be unique, simultaneous, spatially resolved information of the 3-dimensional properties of the target comet and its interaction with the space environment. On 12 November 2014, the Philae lander descended towards comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, bounced twice off the surface, then arrived under an overhanging cliff in the Abydos region. The landing process provided insights into the properties of a cometary nucleus 1-3 . Here we report an investigation of the previously undiscovered site of the second touchdown, where Philae spent almost two minutes of its cross-comet journey, producing four distinct surface contacts on two adjoining cometary boulders. It exposed primitive water ice-that is, water ice from the time of the comet's formation 4.5 billion years ago-in their interiors while travelling through a crevice between the boulders. Our multi-instrument observations made 19 months later found that this water ice, mixed with ubiquitous dark organic-rich material, has a local dust/ice mass ratio of [Formula: see text], matching values previously observed in freshly exposed water ice from outbursts 4 and water ice in shadow 5,6 . At the end of the crevice, Philae made a 0.25-metre-deep impression in the boulder ice, providing in situ measurements confirming that primitive ice has a very low compressive strength (less than 12 pascals, softer than freshly fallen light snow) and allowing a key estimation to be made of the porosity (75 ± 7 per cent) of the boulders' icy interiors. Our results provide constraints for cometary landers seeking access to a volatile-rich ice sample.
