Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Cg), Pestalotiopsis sp. (Ps), Fusarium oxysporum (Fo), and Fusarium proliferatum (Fp) are pathogens that cause various diseases of Cymbidium kanran. Species identification based on the morphological characteristics of pathogen-infected orchids is very complex and difficult; therefore, specific and reliable diagnostic methods are needed. Here, we developed a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for simultaneous detection of Cg, Ps, Fo, and Fp. Four pairs of pathogen-specific primers were designed based on the internal transcribed spacer sequences of each pathogen, generating fragments of 480, 407, 321, and 279 bp, respectively. The multiplex PCR assay using these four pairs of mixed primers effectively detected the four pathogens simultaneously, with a sensitivity of 0.1 ng genomic DNA/pathogen. Application of the optimized multiplex PCR assay to symptomatic C. kanran leaf samples effectively detected single or multiple pathogens. These results indicate that the multiplex PCR developed in this study is not only a rapid and reliable method for detecting four problematic pathogens in C. kanran, but also serves as a very useful tool for early diagnosis.

Abstract Under the threat of public health challenges such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic, individual citizens’ active and cooperative participation in precautionary measures is crucial. Although non-compliance is recognized as a recurring problem, it remains unknown why some individuals tend to comply less than others and whether violations of preventive behaviors are observed consistently across different public health issues. To test our hypothesis that individuals would show consistent public health behavior transcending domains, we collected self-reports from two independent samples of participants (total N = 2983) on health risk beliefs and behavioral choices. Participants’ responses were collected in regard to two separate yet closely related public health issues: smoking and the COVID-19 pandemic. Our data reveal that on average, individuals’ beliefs and behaviors are consistent across different public health domains. In particular, smokers showed diminished compliance behaviors during the pandemic, which was mediated by their lower motives to protect public health. These results provide a psychological mechanism of how individuals’ health risk behaviors are generalized across different public health domains that may explain why some individuals (here, current-smokers) are more prone to violate public health behaviors.

Abstract This study explores the potential application of rice husk biochars, categorized by their pH (acidic, pH 5.98; neutral, pH 7.02; and alkali, pH 11.21) and particle sizes (micron-scale and sub-centimeter) in aquatic ecosystems for efficient removal of ammonium (NH4 +). To assess the NH4 + adsorption capacity of the rice husk biochars, both NH4 + adsorption kinetics and isotherms were employed. Additionally, we propose future prospects for utilizing rice husk biochar as an efficient adsorbent based on a review of previous studies. Our findings suggest that the NH4 +adsorption capacity of rice husk biochars is primarily influenced by their surface characteristics, specifically surface area of rice husk biochars and loss of acidic functional groups. In this study, the neutral rice husk biochars, which had the highest surface area at 9.86 m2 g−1, exhibited the highest NH4 +adsorption performance at 1.12 mg g−1 (micron-scale) and 0.94 mg g−1 (sub-centimeter) compared to acidic and alkali rice husk biochars. Additionally, particle size control proves to be a promising strategy for enhancing adsorption efficiency of rice husk biochars, with the micron-scale rice husk biochars being 1.19-fold higher than sub-centimeter ones. However, before implementing biochar-based pollutant removal strategies in aquatic ecosystems, several considerations (e.g., the potential harmfulness of inner components in biochar, side effects of biochar on aquatic life, and tracking the fate of biochar in aquatic ecosystems) must be addressed. By addressing these concerns, we can expect to expand the practical application of biochar for remediation in aquatic environments, contributing to the effective management of pollutants.

Summary Background Vancomycin exposure is a major risk factor for vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) colonisation, but the relationship between oral vancomycin and the risk of VRE colonisation remains poorly understood without ecological evidence. In this study, we investigated the association between oral vancomycin usage and the incidence of hospital-acquired VRE using a time-series analysis. Methods This retrospective ecological study analysed monthly data on antibiotic usage and VRE incidence from January 2013 to December 2022 at a 2700-bed hospital in South Korea. Antibiotic usage was measured in days of therapy (DOT) per 1000 patient-days. Hospital-acquired VRE incidence was defined as the number of VRE isolates identified more than 48 h after admission per 1000 patient-days. The association between oral vancomycin use and VRE incidence was assessed using a multivariate autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) regression model incorporating lag structures. Results Over 10 years, 5,763 clinical VRE isolates were identified, with 5,133 (89%) being hospital-acquired. Oral vancomycin usage and VRE incidence showed significant upward trends during the study period. In the final ARIMA model adjusting for various types of antibiotic use and baseline VRE carriage rate, a significant association was observed between oral vancomycin use and VRE incidence (coefficient: 0.0160, 95% CI: 0.0030 to 0.0290, P = 0.0162), with an R-squared value of 0.76. Sensitivity analyses demonstrated the robustness of the association between oral vancomycin use and VRE acquisition across various time lags between antibiotic use and VRE incidence. Conclusions There was a significant association between institutional oral vancomycin use and hospital-acquired VRE incidence, highlighting the need for antibiotic stewardship for oral vancomycin use to contain the nosocomial spread of VRE in addition to infection control measures.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) plays a crucial role in the brain's lymphatics as it traverses the central nervous system (CNS). Its primary function is to facilitate the outward transport of waste. Among the various CSF outflow pathways, the route through the cribriform plate along the olfactory nerves stands out as the most predominant. This review describes the outflow pathway of CSF into the nasal lymphatics. Additionally, we examine existing studies to describe mutual influences observed between the brain and extracranial regions due to this outflow pathway. Notably, pathological conditions in the CNS often influence CSF outflow, leading to observable changes in extracranial regions. The established connection between the brain and the nose is significant, and our review underscores its potential relevance in monitoring CNS ailments, including neurodegenerative diseases. Considering that aging – the most significant risk factor for the onset of neurodegeneration – is also a principal factor in CSF turnover alterations, we suggest a novel approach to studying neurodegenerative diseases in therapeutic terms.

Abstract Carbon capture and storage is vital to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, albeit research on the public willingness to pay for it remains limited. Here we address this gap by considering information effects, development magnitude effects and prior familiarity relations on willingness to pay towards carbon capture and storage. Based on national-wide online survey targeting Danish public, conducted from June to August 2022, the contingent valuation method is employed. The study reveals that, irrespective of CO2 reduction goals, enhancing familiarity with carbon capture storage can influence public support. Additionally, we estimate willingness to pay elasticities related to development magnitude using a scope test, ensuring economic significance and validity of our findings. Ultimately, this study provides valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders, supporting and enabling the design of effective strategies to promote public support for carbon capture and storage, and contribute to global climate change mitigation efforts.

Abstract Little is known about changes in the abundance of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and immune phenotype (IP) in recurrent and/or metastatic (R/M) head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We aimed to compare the TILs and IP between initial and recurrent HNSCCs using paired analysis. Thirty-seven patients who experienced recurrence after surgical resection and received treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) between June 2014 and June 2023 were included. Changes in intratumoral TIL (iTILs), stromal TIL (sTILs), and IPs were subjected to paired analysis between the initial and recurrent tumors. Abstract This study aimed to analyze vital sign characteristics of adult patients admitted at the Tertiary Hospital, and to define fever threshold and average body temperature by examining the tympanic temperatures of all patients. Retrospective medical data were extracted from 9195 patients aged > 21 years admitted to a tertiary hospital for elective surgeries between 2016 and 2020. Data regarding the patients’ vital signs during their hospital stay, including tympanic body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate, were analyzed according to age, sex, and circadian rhythm. A normal-distribution graph was obtained when all the body temperature results were aligned. The average body temperature measured was 36.91 ± 0.45 °C (average ± standard deviation), indicating a potential fever threshold of 37.81 °C. When the participants were divided into age groups, the average temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate exhibited parabolic trends. Patients in their 60s exhibited the lowest average temperature (36.88 °C), whereas those in their 50s had the lowest average heart rate (75.82/min) and lowest respiratory rate (19.08/min). Heart rate and respiratory rate tended to increase in elderly people older than 81 years. The average body temperature was greater in women than in men (36.94 ± 0.42 °C vs. 36.89 ± 0.47 °C), while the average heart (75.53 ± 10.04/min vs. 77.31 ± 11.52/min) and respiratory rates (19.13 ± 1.39/min vs. 19.29 ± 2.24/min) were lower in women than in men respectively. According to the time of measurement, the average temperature and heart rate appeared to follow a sinusoidal pattern, suggesting that the circadian rhythm was highest at 1 a.m. and lowest at 8 a.m. Tympanic temperature is a convenient measurement method preferred in hospital settings because it is noninvasive and easier to measure compared to other body parts. To develop an improved device and measurement method in the future, it is necessary to analyze tympanic temperature big data and compare it with past vital sign data or biometric information from other body parts.

This study examined the collision dynamics between tsunami-driven drifting containers and port cranes, prompted by risks from the recent 7.6 magnitude earthquake and tsunami off Noto Peninsula, Japan. Hydraulic experiments were conducted to analyze container drift and collision forces using motion analysis software (DIPP-Motion) and a load cell installed on a crane leg model. The key parameters included the tsunami wave height, container weight (empty and loaded), initial position, and revetment type. The results suggested that higher tsunami wave heights led to more extraordinary inundation, allowing containers to float more efficiently, reducing bottom friction, and increasing drift speed and collision forces. The collision speeds ranged from 1.59 to 2.48 m/s, with collision forces of 45.18 to 77.68 N, representing increases of 6.45 to 15.58 times than no object. Heavier containers required deeper water to float, resulting in lower drift and collision speeds (0.88–0.89 times that of lighter containers). The wave-absorbing revetment caused higher flow velocities, producing collision speeds and forces 1.32–1.48 times greater than the vertical revetment. These findings highlight the importance of considering the tsunami magnitude, container weight, initial position, and revetment type in design, with face-to-face contact conditions crucial for estimating the maximum collision forces and preventing future tsunami damage.

Abstract Cereblon (CRBN) is a substrate recruiter for CRL4CRBN E3 ubiquitin ligase system playing a plethora of pivotal roles for biological systems. Here, we identified DNAJB1 (DJ1) as endogenous substrate of CRBN and report how CRBN influences the aggregation and toxicity of alpha-synuclein (α-SYN) via modulation of DJ1. CRBN interferes with molecular activities of DJ1 in vitro, in cells, and in vivo resulting in a reduced disaggregation of α-SYN fibrils, increased formation of preformed fibrils (PFFs) of α-SYN, and high susceptibility of mice to MPTP and PFF-induced neurotoxicity. Depletion of Crbn improves the behavioral and biochemical responses of mice towards neurotoxic insult. Finally, we designed a peptide inhibitor to inhibit the recruitment of DJ1 to CRBN for ubiquitination, resulting in an enhanced supply of DJ1 to counteract the toxicity of aggregated α-SYN. Our data has important implications for development of CRBN-targeting therapies that could prevent or delay progression of neurodegenerative synucleinopathy.

Introduction: Proteinuria presents a challenging complication during systemic therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study aims to identify risk factors for proteinuria in patients with HCC treated with atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (Atezo/Bev) or lenvatinib (LEN) as first-line systemic treatment. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 622 consecutive patients with unresectable HCC who received Atezo/Bev or LEN as first-line systemic treatment between October 2013 and October 2022. Cumulative incidence of proteinuria was estimated using Kaplan-Meier curves and compared using log-rank tests. Risk factors for proteinuria were identified using Cox proportional-hazard models, along with propensity score-matched and subgroup analyses. Results: Among 367 patients treated with Atezo/Bev and 255 with LEN, the cumulative incidence of proteinuria at 12 months was 27.5%. In the multivariable analysis, Atezo/Bev treatment (adjusted HR [aHR]: 1.57; 95% CI: 1.03–2.42), diabetes (aHR: 1.64; 95% CI: 1.03–2.61), hypertension (aHR: 2.27; 95% CI: 1.04–4.97), Child-Pugh class B (aHR: 3.43; 95% CI: 1.34–8.78), macrovascular invasion (MVI; aHR: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.04–2.38), and an estimated glomerular filtration rate ≤60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (aHR: 3.21; 95% CI: 1.84–5.62) were identified as risk factors for proteinuria. A higher risk of proteinuria in Atezo/Bev patients compared with LEN was consistently observed in the PS-matched cohort, particularly pronounced in subgroups with MVI (HR: 2.84; 95% CI: 1.23–6.54) compared with those without MVI (HR: 1.31; 95% CI: 0.69–2.47). Conclusions: Patients treated with Atezo/Bev as first-line systemic treatment for HCC exhibited a higher risk of proteinuria compared with those with LEN, particularly when accompanied by MVI.

Abstract Surgical occlusion of the left atrial appendage (LAA) during cardiac surgery in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is known to reduce thromboembolism. However, data on the clinical significance of LAA occlusion (LAAO) in patients with mitral regurgitation (MR) are lacking. A total of 237 AF patients with chronic severe MR who underwent mitral valve (MV) surgery were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups according to concomitant LAAO or LAA preservation. The primary outcome was a composite of all-cause death and thromboembolic events (ischemic stroke or systemic embolism). The LAA was surgically occluded in 98 (41%) patients and preserved in 139 (59%) patients. During the follow-up period (median, 37 months), 29 primary outcomes occurred. In the Kaplan–Meyer analysis, the LAA preservation group showed a greater cumulative incidence of the primary outcome (P = 0.002) and thromboembolic events (P = 0.003) than the LAAO group. In the univariate Cox regression analysis, coronary artery disease, CHA2DS2-VASc score, a cauliflower-shaped LAA, Maze, and no LAAO were significantly associated with the primary outcome. In the multivariate Cox regression analysis, concomitant LAAO was significantly linked to the primary outcome (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.30, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.10–0.91, P = 0.033) and thromboembolic events (HR: 0.19, 95% CI: 0.04–0.87, P = 0.032). These benefits from LAAO were consistent, even after propensity score–matched analysis. For patients undergoing surgery for chronic MR who also have AF, concomitant surgical LAAO is associated with favorable clinical outcome.

This study investigates the efficient passivation of CdTe-based semiconductor crystals, focusing on the long-term stability and underlying mechanisms of NaOCl passivation. CdZnTeSe crystals were grown, processed, and passivated with NaOCl, and their surface characteristics were studied using SEM-EDS and XPS. The passivation was found to significantly enhance the surface resistance, with a sustained effect for more than 90 s, attributed to the formation of a tellurium oxide layer. The passivation process was further elucidated through detailed morphological and compositional analyses. The NaOCl-passivated crystals exhibited improved electrical and spectroscopic properties in radiation detection, with a prolonged stability of 60–90 days, which are longer compared to other passivants. Additionally, the feasibility of NaOCl passivation on a CdZnTeSe detector was explored, showcasing enhanced material resistance and spectroscopic performance. The study concludes with insights into the potential industrial application of NaOCl passivation for CdTe-based radiation detectors.

This longitudinal study examined the mediating role of teacher support in the relationship between academic burnout and self-esteem among adolescents in Korea. A total of 154 adolescents (13 years old) were followed up for 4 years at 1-year intervals. Path analysis indicated that the developmental trajectory of academic burnout (i.e. the intercept and slope) leads to a lower level of teacher support (T4) and self-esteem (T4) after controlling for the effect of gender and self-worth. Moreover, teacher support mediated the relationship between development of academic burnout and self-esteem. The rate of change of academic burnout, as well as its initial value, exerted an indirect negative effect on self-esteem through the mediator of teacher support. It has been generally accepted that low self-esteem is the cause of academic burnout. However, our findings indicate that academic burnout might be an influencing factor of self-esteem, implying that the causal relationship between self-esteem and academic burnout should be reconsidered.

Mothers of school-aged children ages 3 to 17 years with developmental disabilities (DDs) commonly report sleep problems in their children associated with impaired maternal sleep. However, existing research relies heavily on mothers' self-reported sleep. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of objectively measuring child and mother sleep-wake patterns using actigraphy and videosomnography. This was an observational pilot study. Mothers wore actigraphy watches and video-recorded their child's sleep for 7 nights. Mothers also completed a 7-day sleep diary and questionnaires on sleep quality, depressive symptoms, stress, and child sleep problems. Ten mothers (32-49 years) and ten children with DDs (8-12 years) completed this study. Half of the children were boys with autism spectrum disorders. We successfully recruited 77% of eligible mothers for the study during the pandemic. Eight mothers successfully wore the actigraphy, and nine successfully video-recorded their child's sleep. Mothers rated their participation positively and considered the data collection protocol acceptable. While mothers' sleep patterns from actigraphy were mostly within recommendations, self-reported sleep quality was poor. Child's sleep estimates from videosomnography showed children slept substantially less than recommended sleep hours. Mothers also reported a high frequency of child sleep problems. Consistent with this pattern, mothers also endorsed elevated stress and depression. The use of actigraphy and videosomnography is feasible. Objective sleep measurement for mothers' and children's sleep is needed with self-report to measure multidimensional aspects of sleep and discrepancies between objective and self-report sleep measures. Future studies can use multi-methods sleep measures and work toward interventions that can improve family sleep and reduce mothers' stress and depression.

As the objective of language teaching is shifting from producing so-called "native-like" speakers to fostering speakers competent in intercultural communication, it has become necessary to identify the kinds of learning resources that may be related to the learner's development of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in today's context of globalization and technological innovation. Employing a mixed-method approach with focus group interviews (n = 46) and a survey (n = 342), this study examines Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language learners' out-of-class intercultural experience and examines how interpersonal engagement and media usage are associated with the three dimensions of ICC: "approach," "analyze," and "act." The study found that while both interpersonal interactions and media usage related to target language were positively associated with self-reported gains in all three dimensions of ICC, media use consistently had a greater effect on ICC than interpersonal interactions. The implications of these findings for language educators are discussed.

Although poor health has been reported in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), most studies excluded fathers and focused on mental health. We combined 2016-2019 data from the National Surveys of Children's Health to determine child and parent characteristics that predict poor mental and physical health in fathers (n = 818) and mothers (n = 2111) of children with ASD. For fathers of children with ASD, higher parenting stress was significantly associated with greater odds of poor physical health, whereas racial and ethnic minorities and living at 400% above the federal poverty were significantly associated with lower odds of poor mental health. For mothers of children with ASD, greater child sleep problems were significantly associated with greater odds of poor physical health, and two-parent household living 400% above the poverty line was significantly associated with reported lower odds of poor mental health. Continued efforts to reduce parenting stress and improve child sleep problems, along with expanding existing services and coverages of ASD services, especially for low-income families, may help reduce the burden on these families, preventing adverse future health outcomes in this population.

The linear dependence of age, period, and birth cohort is a challenge for the analysis of social change. With either repeated cross-sectional data or conventional panel data, raw change cannot be decomposed into over-time differences that are attributable to the effects of common experiences of alternative birth cohorts, features of the periods under observation, and the cumulation of lifecourse aging. This article proposes a rolling panel model for cohort, period, and aging effects, suggested by and tuned to the treble panel data collected for the General Social Survey from 2006 through 2014. While the model does not offer a general solution for the identification of the classical age-period-cohort accounting model, it yields warranted interpretations under plausible assumptions that are reasonable for many outcomes of interest. In particular, if aging effects can be assumed to be invariant over the course of an observation interval, and if separate panel samples of the full age distribution overlap within the same observation interval, then period and aging effects can be parameterized and interpreted separately, adjusted for cohort differences that pulse through the same observation interval. The estimated cohort effects during the observation interval are then interpretable as effects during the observation interval of entangled period and cumulated aging differences from before the observation interval.

BackgroundBreast density is an important risk factor for breast cancer and is known to be associated with characteristics such as age, race, and hormone levels; however, it is unclear what factors contribute to changes in breast density in postmenopausal women over time. Understanding factors associated with density changes may enable a better understanding of breast cancer risk and facilitate potential strategies for prevention.MethodsThis study investigated potential associations between personal factors and changes in mammographic density in a cohort of 3,392 postmenopausal women with no personal history of breast cancer between 2011 and 2017. Self-reported information on demographics, breast and reproductive history, and lifestyle factors, including body mass index (BMI), alcohol intake, smoking, and physical activity, was collected by an electronic intake form, and breast imaging reporting and database system (BI-RADS) mammographic density scores were obtained from electronic medical records. Factors associated with a longitudinal increase or decrease in mammographic density were identified using Fisher's exact test and multivariate conditional logistic regression.Results7.9% of women exhibited a longitudinal decrease in mammographic density, 6.7% exhibited an increase, and 85.4% exhibited no change. Longitudinal changes in mammographic density were correlated with age, race/ethnicity, and age at menopause in the univariate analysis. In the multivariate analysis, Asian women were more likely to exhibit a longitudinal increase in mammographic density and less likely to exhibit a decrease compared to White women. On the other hand, obese women were less likely to exhibit an increase and more likely to exhibit a decrease compared to normal weight women. Women who underwent menopause at age 55 years or older were less likely to exhibit a decrease in mammographic density compared to women who underwent menopause at a younger age. Besides obesity, lifestyle factors (alcohol intake, smoking, and physical activity) were not associated with longitudinal changes in mammographic density.ConclusionsThe associations we observed between Asian race/obesity and longitudinal changes in BI-RADS density in postmenopausal women are paradoxical in that breast cancer risk is lower in Asian women and higher in obese women. However, the association between later age at menopause and a decreased likelihood of decreasing in BI-RADS density over time is consistent with later age at menopause being a risk factor for breast cancer and suggests a potential relationship between greater cumulative lifetime estrogen exposure and relative stability in breast density after menopause. Our findings support the complexity of the relationships between breast density, BMI, hormone exposure, and breast cancer risk.

Early caregiving adversity (ECA) is associated with elevated psychological symptomatology. While neurobehavioral ECA research has focused on socioemotional and cognitive development, ECA may also increase risk for low-level sensory processing challenges. However, no prior work has compared how diverse ECA exposures differentially relate to sensory processing, or, critically, how this might influence psychological outcomes. We examined sensory processing challenges in 183 8-17-year-old youth with and without histories of institutional (orphanage) or foster caregiving, with a particular focus on sensory over-responsivity (SOR), a pattern of intensified responses to sensory stimuli that may negatively impact mental health. We further tested whether sensory processing challenges are linked to elevated internalizing and externalizing symptoms common in ECA-exposed youth. Relative to nonadopted comparison youth, both groups of ECA-exposed youth had elevated sensory processing challenges, including SOR, and also had heightened internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Additionally, we found significant indirect effects of ECA on internalizing and externalizing symptoms through both general sensory processing challenges and SOR, covarying for age and sex assigned at birth. These findings suggest multiple forms of ECA confer risk for sensory processing challenges that may contribute to mental health outcomes, and motivate continuing examination of these symptoms, with possible long-term implications for screening and treatment following ECA.
