Visceral adiposity index (VAI), an indicator of visceral fat, is associated with metabolic health and arterial stiffness. However, studies correlating VAI and stroke are limited. This study aimed to explore the association between VAI and incident stroke in the Chinese population.We retrospectively analysed the data of 9127 individuals enrolled in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The first survey of the study was conducted during 2011-2012 and the individuals were followed up until Survey 4 (2017-2018). Multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models were used to evaluate the association between VAI and stroke. The mean age of the study population was 59.3 ± 9.5 years and 4938 (54.1%) participants were women. During the median follow-up of 5.2 [1.0-7.0] years, 833 (9.1%) participants developed stroke, and the cumulative incidence of stroke increased with increasing quartiles of VAI (8.6%, 8.7%, 9.2%, and 10.0%). Compared to those in the first quartile of VAI, individuals in the fourth quartile had an increased risk of stroke (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.15-1.75). The results were stable in several sensitivity analyses.Our findings suggest a positive association between VAI and incident stroke in the Chinese population.

Salinity variation in ancient epicontinental seas has long been challenging to reconstruct. We determined salinity variation in the Late Pennsylvanian North American Midcontinent Sea based on normalized boron concentrations (B/Ga) and isotopic compositions (δ11B) of bulk shale. We analyzed the Stark Shale Member of the Missourian Stage Dennis Limestone cyclothem in the Charleston core (CC) from the Illinois Basin (eastward, more proximal) and the Iowa Riverton core (IRC) from the Midcontinent Shelf (westward, more distal). Both cores exhibited the same pattern of secular variation, with lower B/Ga and δ11B values at their base and top, recording less saline conditions during lower sea-level stands, and higher values in their middle part, recording more saline conditions at highstands—a pattern that conforms to conventional sequence stratigraphic and glacio-eustatic interpretations of Midcontinent cyclothems. At equivalent stratigraphic levels, B/Ga and δ11B values are systematically lower at CC relative to IRC, reflecting the generally lower salinity conditions of the Illinois Basin relative to the Midcontinent shelf, which is consistent with greater freshwater influence from the east due to heavy river runoff into the Appalachian foreland basin. Our findings serve to demonstrate the utility of paired B concentration and isotope data for paleosalinity analysis of deep-time shale formations.

Cyan-emitting Ca9NaGd2/3(PO4)7:Eu2+ phosphors were synthesized via high temperature solid-state route. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to verify the phase and morphology of the Ca9NaGd2/3(PO4)7:Eu2+ (CNGP:Eu2+) phosphors. The as-obtained phosphor exhibits a broad excitation band of 250–420 nm, which is near the ultraviolet region. An intense asymmetric cyan emission at 496 nm corresponds to the 5d-4f transition of Eu2+. The multiple-site luminescent properties of Eu2+ ions in CNGP benefit from versatile structure of β-Ca3(PO4)2 compounds. The effective energy transfer distance is 5.46 nm (through the spectral overlap calculation), validating that the resonant energy migration type is via dipole–dipole interaction mechanism. Compared to the initial one at room temperature, the luminescent intensity of CNGP:Eu2+ phosphor can maintain 77% as it is heated up to 420 K. A white light-emitting diode (WLED) with excellent luminescent properties was successfully fabricated. Moreover, the CIE chromaticity coordinates of fabricated WLED driven by changing current just change slightly.

Reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) is a technique widely used to investigate the expression of genes. An appropriate reference gene (RG) is essential for RT-qPCR analysis to obtain accurate and reliable results. Caragana intermedia plays an important role in afforestation as a bush. However, due to the lack of appropriate RGs, the research on development-related genes is limited. In this study, the selection for suitable RGs of different organs at various development stages to normalize the results of RT-qPCR about development-related genes was performed. To test the expression stability across all samples, we used the software algorithms such as geNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper, and RefFinder to evaluate all the candidate RGs. Our results showed that CiEF1α was the most stable RG with little fluctuation among all samples. In addition, CiGAPDH in roots, CiSKIP1 in stems and leaves, and CiEF1α in different organs were selected as the most stable RGs. To confirm the applicability of the most stable RGs, the relative expression of CiWRKY17 was normalized using different candidate RGs. Taken together, our research laid a foundation for the study of development-related genes in C. intermedia.

Caragana intermedia (C. intermedia) is a kind of drought-tolerant leguminous shrub. WRKY transcription factors are one of the largest family of transcription factors in plants and play critical regulatory roles in stress tolerance and the development of plants. In our study, CiWRKY48 was cloned from C. intermedia, analyzed using bioinformatics software, and expressed with a prokaryotic expression system. The results showed that the open reading frame (ORF) of CiWRKY48 was 1158bp, the molecular weight (MW) was 42 kDa, and its subcellular localization was in the nucleus. Additionally, fusion protein was obtained, and confirmed by western blotting. The stress resistance of the pET30a-His-MBP-CiWRKY48 transformed Escherichia coli expression strain was reduced under mannitol and salt treatment, compared with the control. Overall, our findings provided a foundation for uncovering the function of CiWRKY48.

Social interaction has irreplaceable significance for children’s development. As the main content of rural children’s social interaction, good parent-child interaction, child-friend interaction, and child-teacher interaction have positive effects on rural children’s self-identity individually and as a whole. The positive influence of social interaction plays an indirect role by enhancing the intimacy between children and those who interact with them. In view of the great significance of family to children’s growth, there is no significant difference in the positive effect of parent-child interaction on the self-identity of left-behind and non-left-behind children. Compared with non-left-behind children, the development of left-behind children’s self-identity is more positively affected by child-friend interaction. Strengthened interaction with friends offsets to a certain extent the negative influence of the insufficient parent-child interaction due to their parents’ migration for work. In sum, peer groups may have more influence on the development of left-behind children in rural areas. From the perspective of social interaction, in order to promote the mental health development of rural children, we should bring the supportive role of social interaction and relationship networks into full play to promote the social interaction of rural children and boost their mental health and emotional development, and provide more care for rural left-behind children by strengthening their ties with friends.

Telomerase and micro-RNAs (miRNAs) are simultaneously upregulated in a variety of tumor cells and have emerged as promising tumor markers. However, sensitive detection of telomerase and miRNAs in situ remains a great challenge due to their low expression levels. Here, we designed a Boolean logic "AND" signal amplification strategy based on functionalized ordered mesoporous nanoparticles (FOMNs) to achieve ultrasensitive detection of telomerase and miR-21 in living tumor cells. Briefly, the strategy uses telomerase as an input to enable the release of DNA3-ROX-BHQ hairpins by making the wrapping DNA1 form a DNA-a hairpin with the joint participation of dNTPs. Subsequently, DNA2-Ag, DNA3-ROX-BHQ, and the second input miR-21 participated in hybridization chain reaction to amplify fluorescence and Raman signals. Experimental results showed the intensity of output dual signals relevant to the expression levels of telomerase and miR-21. The Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) not only enhanced the fluorescence signals but also allowed to obtain more sensitive Raman signals. Therefore, even if expression of tumor markers is at a low level, the FOMN-based dual-signal logic operation strategy can still achieve sensitive detection of telomerase and miR-21 in situ. Furthermore, FOMNs can detect miR-21 expression levels in a short time. Consequently, this strategy has a potential clinical application value in detection of tumor markers and the assessment of tumor treatment efficacy.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important human pathogen that colonizes the upper respiratory tract. The infection of influenza A virus (IAV) is associated with an increase in susceptibility to pneumococcal pneumonia. In the present study, we analyzed the antibacterial activity of ChBp-I2 with N-terminal choline binding peptide and C-terminal IAV epitope to S. pneumoniae. Three ChBp-Is with different IAV epitope were applied in pneumococcal binding test. Among which ChBp-I2 of 50 µg/ml mediate a similar binding capacity of IAV antibody to capsular polysaccharide antibody. In the following tests, no inhibitory effect of ChBp-I2 was detected to pneumococcal cells alone. However, high concentrations of ChBp-I2 influence the synthesis of pneumococcal cell wall. Meanwhile, the growth rate, adhesion and the autolysis of pneumococcal cells are both decreased with the existence of ChBp-I2 and IAV antibodies. In vivo, the treatment of ChBp-I2 decrease the number of pneumococcal cells in lung and blood in IAV immunized mice. In conclusion, the distinctive activities of ChBp-I2 to S. pneumoniae indicate it could be a candidate for preventing secondary S. pneumoniae infection post IAV infection.

Although previous researchers have explored positive outcomes of workplace fun, the workplace fun–employee creativity relationship has received little attention. We investigated the link between workplace fun and employee creativity, and the mediating effect of leader–member exchange (LMX) on this relationship. Participants comprised 226 subordinates and 45 supervisors from Chinese stateowned companies. We employed structural equation modeling analysis to examine the hypotheses. Results show that workplace fun did not have a significant direct relationship with employee creativity. However, LMX fully mediated the workplace fun–employee creativity link. These results suggest that, to promote employee creativity, organizations should create a fun work environment in which employees can develop high-quality LMX.

This paper analyzes the user needs of the scientific research project management system, expounds the feasibility of information system development, and analyzes the business needs combined with the reality of scientific research project management. In the system level design, combined with the demand analysis of the information system function, the system module is developed in a hierarchical way. The whole system is divided into four layers: (i) core business layer; (ii) data access interface layer; (iii) neighborhood object layer; (iv) data platform. The specific functions include three various modules, i.e., scientific research project information management module, research achievement management module, and scientific research information portal module. In the system software part, the attribute encryption method is used to effectively encrypt the information of scientific and technological projects and to protect the safe sharing of scientific and technological information in colleges and universities. Finally, we look at the limitations of conducting high-quality design-science research in the context of the larger information system community. The experimental results show that the system can perform the corresponding functions effectively, and the data reading integrity is high, which can meet the requirements of the university science and technology project information management.

The article first expounds the profound influence of Shakespeare’s plays and the significance of translating them into Chinese. Then it introduces Zhu Shenghao’s achievements and the origin and connotation of his “Red Boat Spirit”. The three aspects of the “Red Boat Spirit”, namely the pioneering spirit, the fighting spirit and the dedication spirit were found to match perfectly with what Zhu Shenghao displayed during his translation of Shakespeare’s plays. Thereafter, the article illustrates the significance of setting up Zhu Shenghao as a moral example for contemporary college students before a final description of the concrete operation of integrating Zhu Shenghao into the education of college students’ “Red Boat Spirit”.

Fluorine pollution in saline-sodic soils has become an important environmental problem, but little is known about the interaction between Al2(SO4)3 and fluorine when Al2(SO4)3 is used to improve saline-sodic soils. In this study, batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the impacts of different saline-sodic soils with Al2(SO4)3 on fluorine adsorption, and the mechanisms of adsorption were characterized by SEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS analysis. The results showed that fluorine adsorption decreased with increasing soil salinity, and the addition of Al2(SO4)3 increased the adsorption of fluorine in soils. Among the three saline-sodic soils, Al2(SO4)3 contributed greatly to fluorine adsorption by mildly saline-sodic soils, with a range of 40.84%-69.70%. Fluorine adsorption isotherms could be properly described by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. At higher fluorine equilibrium concentrations, the adsorption amount of fluorine was greater for soils with Al→F. Both the soil porosity and the number of aggregates of saline-sodic soils were increased after adding Al2(SO4)3 for adsorption. Functional groups such as Si-O-Si, H-O-H, C-H, -OH, and Al-O-H were involved in the reaction process. Fluorine adsorption on saline-sodic soils refers to the ligand exchange and electrostatic adsorption, and F− replaces -OH on the soil surface. This work may provide a theoretical reference for the changes in fluorine chemical behavior when Al2(SO4)3 ameliorates saline-sodic soils.

Influenza A viruses in animal reservoirs repeatedly cross species barrier to infect humans. Once an animal-borne virus with novel antigenicity acquired the efficient human to human transmissibility, it will become epidemic in the population. Dogs are the closest animal companions to humans and canine respiratory tract expresses both SAα2,3-(avian type) and α2,6-Gal (human type) receptors. However, the role of dogs in the ecology of influenza viruses is unclear. H3N2 avian influenza viruses transmitted to dogs around 2006 and have formed stable lineages. The long-term epidemic of avian-origin H3N2 virus in canine offers the best models to investigate the effect of dogs on the evolution of influenza viruses. Here, we carried out a systematic and comparative identification of the biological characteristics of H3N2 canine influenza viruses (CIVs) isolated in the worldwide over 10 years. We found that during the adaptation of H3N2 CIVs to dogs, H3N2 CIVs became to recognize the human-like SAα2,6-Gal receptor, gradually increased HA acid stability and replication ability in human airway epithelial cells, and acquired a 100% transmission rate via respiratory droplet in ferret model, which were essential hallmarks of being adapted to humans. We also identified that the frequency of substitutions related to human adaptation has gradually increased in H3N2 CIVs, and determined four cumulative molecular changes responsible for the increased airborne transmission ability in ferrets. Our results suggested that canine may serve as an intermediate for the adaptation of avian influenza virus to human. Continuous surveillance coordinated with risk assessment for CIVs is necessary.

Summary Background The measurement of anatomical structures is critical in plastic and reconstructive surgery. However, few detailed and standardized measurements have been widely used in the periorbital region. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a novel detailed and standardized protocol with 2D and 3D technologies, and explore the relationship between them and direct measurements. Methods Fifty healthy Caucasians (100 eyes) between 20 and 68 years old were recruited and captured for 3D photographs by VECTRA M3 3D Imaging System. Subsequently, 24 landmarks were located on each 3D photographs following a standardized protocol, and then 19 linear and 3 angular periorbital variables were measured. Furthermore, two-dimensional (2D) and direct measurements were conducted on each subject and compared with 3D measurements and one another. Results The grand r means across all measurements were 0.77, 0.78, and 0.88 for direct vs. 2D values, direct vs. 3D values, and 3D vs. 2D values, respectively. The mean absolute differences were 1 mm (ranging from 0.2 mm to 3.7 mm) between direct and 3D measurements, 1 mm (ranging from 0.04 mm to 2.4 mm) between direct and 2D measurements, and 1 mm and 6.6° (ranging from 0.04 mm or 0.5° to 3 mm or 12.8°) between 2D and 3D measurements. Conclusions This study verified the feasibility of this detailed and standardized landmark localization protocol for assessing the periorbital morphology with 2D and 3D technologies. This protocol may work as a bridge communicating with all studies involving any of the three technologies in the future.

The flexible strain sensor is of significant importance in wearable electronics, since it can help monitor the physical signals from the human body. Among various strain sensors, the foam-shaped ones have received widespread attention owing to their light weight and gas permeability. However, the working range of these sensors is still not large enough, and the sensitivity needs to be further improved. In this work, we develop a high-performance foam-shaped strain sensor composed of Ti3C2Tx MXene, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). MXene sheets are adsorbed on the surface of a composite foam of MWCNTs and TPU (referred to as TPU/MWCNTs foam), which is prefabricated by using a salt-templating method. The obtained TPU/MWCNTs@MXene foam works effectively as a lightweight, easily processable, and sensitive strain sensor. The TPU/MWCNTs@MXene device can deliver a wide working strain range of ∼100% and an outstanding sensitivity as high as 363 simultaneously, superior to the state-of-the-art foam-shaped strain sensors. Moreover, the composite foam shows an excellent gas permeability and suitable elastic modulus close to those of skin, indicating its being highly comfortable as a wearable sensor. Owing to these advantages, the sensor works effectively in detecting both subtle and large human movements, such as joint motion, finger motion, and vocal cord vibration. In addition, the sensor can be used for gesture recognition, demonstrating its perspective in human-machine interaction. Because of the high sensitivity, wide working range, gas permeability, and suitable modulus, our foam-shaped composite strain sensor may have great potential in the field of flexible and wearable electronics in the near future.

In this study we identified leader humility as a critical leader characteristic relevant to promoting employee creative performance, and examined work engagement as a mediator of this relationship. Data were collected from 41 supervisors and 237 subordinates employed at 15 high-tech firms in China, who completed a survey. Structural equation modeling results revealed a partial mediation model in which leader humility was positively related to employee creative performance both directly and indirectly via work engagement. These results suggest that leaders of organizations should be encouraged to practice humility and that managerial interventions should be implemented to stimulate employees to feel engaged in their work.

Due to their important roles in medicine and asymmetric metal catalysis, the formation of Betti bases has attracted wide interest in organic chemical community. Traditional multicomponent reaction methods for synthesizing Betti bases normally require long reaction times under harsh conditions (high temperature, microwave or ultrasonic irradiation, etc.) in the presence of various catalysts. In this study, we developed a mild, highly efficient and environmentally friendly method to synthesize Betti bases without the use of any catalysts in microdroplets. Clade 2.3.4.4 avian H5Ny viruses, namely H5N2, H5N6, and H5N8, have exhibited unprecedented intercontinental spread in poultry. Among them, only H5N6 viruses are frequently reported to infect mammals and cause serious human infections. In this study, the genetic and biological characteristics of surface hemagglutinin (HA) from clade 2.3.4.4 H5Ny avian influenza viruses (AIVs) were examined for adaptation in mammalian infection. Phylogenetic analysis identified an amino acid (AA) deletion at position 131 of HA as a distinctive feature of H5N6 virus isolated from human patients. This single AA deletion was found to enhance H5N6 virus replication and pathogenicity in vitro and in mammalian hosts (mice and ferrets) through HA protein acid and thermal stabilization that resulted in reduced pH threshold from pH 5.7 to 5.5 for viral-endosomal membrane fusion. Mass spectrometry and crystal structure revealed that the AA deletion in HA at position 131 introduced an N-linked glycosylation site at 129, which increases compactness between HA monomers, thus stabilizes the trimeric structure. Our findings provide a molecular understanding of how HA protein stabilization promotes cross-species avian H5N6 virus infection to mammalian hosts.

ABSTRACT: Due to the influence of drilling disturbance, wellbore collapse frequently occurs in the underbalanced drilling process of coalbed methane (CBM) horizontal wells. In fact, this kind of wellbore collapse problem is influenced and controlled by the thermo-hydro-mechanical (T-H-M) coupling effect and coal shrinkage induced by methane desorption that happened in the underbalanced condition. However, most previous studies ignored the influence of T-H-M coupling and coal shrinkage on wellbore stability. Therefore, a fully coupled T-H-M model with local thermal equilibrium condition was proposed for wellbore stability analysis of a CBM horizontal well, where the coal shrinkage induced by methane desorption was taken into account, and the finite element method was employed to solve the present model. The changes of the time-dependent field variables, such as pore pressure, temperature, and stress components were analyzed with considering different coupling conditions. The failure behaviors of a horizontal wellbore in different coupling conditions were also analyzed and compared with the results of the traditional analyzing method. The results indicated that both T-H-M coupling and coal shrinkage induced by gas desorption have a significant impact on these time-dependent field variables and failure behaviors of horizontal wellbore, in other words, the effect of gas desorption and T-H-M coupling cannot be ignored in CBM underbalanced drilling. Thus, the present model can help us understand the multiple fields coupling behaviors around the CBM horizontal wellbore in underbalanced drilling, and it can also provide the theoretical basis for predicting collapse pressure accurately, optimizing drilling mud density and maintaining wellbore stability. 1. INTRODUCTION Coalbed methane (CBM) is considered to be a kind of significant unconventional natural gas resource, and a large amount of attention has been paid to it worldwide (Palmer 2010; Moore 2012). Nowadays, underground gas drainage and surface drilling are the two main technologies to develop CBM from coal seam (Shen et al. 2012; Thakur et al. 2014). Depends on the development of drilling technology, CBM surface drilling technology has developed very rapidly in recent years. And the horizontal drilling technology from the surface is now considered to be the most efficient technology for extracting CBM, which has the advantage of much higher safety, economy and much more reservoir stimulation measures (Tao et al. 2019).

The H3N8 avian influenza virus (AIV) has been circulating in wild birds, with occasional interspecies transmission to mammals. The first human infection of H3N8 subtype occurred in Henan Province, China, in April, 2022. We aimed to investigate clinical, epidemiological, and virological data related to a second case identified soon afterwards in Hunan Province, China.We analysed clinical, epidemiological, and virological data for a 5-year-old boy diagnosed with H3N8 AIV infection in May, 2022, during influenza-like illness surveillance in Changsha City, Hunan Province, China. H3N8 virus strains from chicken flocks from January, 2021, to April, 2022, were retrospectively investigated in China. The genomes of the viruses were sequenced for phylogenetic analysis of all the eight gene segments. We evaluated the receptor-binding properties of the H3N8 viruses by using a solid-phase binding assay. We used sequence alignment and homology-modelling methods to study the effect of specific mutations on the human receptor-binding properties. We also conducted serological surveillance to detect the H3N8 infections among poultry workers in the two provinces with H3N8 cases.The clinical symptoms of the patient were mild, including fever, sore throat, chills, and a runny nose. The patient's fever subsided on the same day of hospitalisation, and these symptoms disappeared 7 days later, presenting mild influenza symptoms, with no pneumonia. An H3N8 virus was isolated from the patient's throat swab specimen. The novel H3N8 virus causing human infection was first detected in a chicken farm in Guangdong Province in December, 2021, and subsequently emerged in several provinces. Sequence analyses revealed the novel H3N8 AIVs originated from multiple reassortment events. The haemagglutinin gene could have originated from H3Ny AIVs of duck origin. The neuraminidase gene belongs to North American lineage, and might have originated in Alaska (USA) and been transferred by migratory birds along the east Asian flyway. The six internal genes had originated from G57 genotype H9N2 AIVs that were endemic in chicken flocks. Reassortment events might have occurred in domestic ducks or chickens in the Pearl River Delta area in southern China. The novel H3N8 viruses possess the ability to bind to both avian-type and human-type sialic acid receptors, which pose a threat to human health. No poultry worker in our study was positive for antibodies against the H3N8 virus.The novel H3N8 virus that caused human infection had originated from chickens, a typical spillover. The virus is a triple reassortment strain with the Eurasian avian H3 gene, North American avian N8 gene, and dynamic internal genes of the H9N2 viruses. The virus already possesses binding ability to human-type receptors, though the risk of the H3N8 virus infection in humans was low, and the cases are rare and sporadic at present. In order to improve the brightness and contrast of low illumination color images and avoid over enhancement, an adaptive image enhancement algorithm based on visual saliency is proposed. Firstly, the original low illumination image is transformed from Red Green Blue (RGB) color space to Hue Saturation Intensity (HSI) color space. Secondly, the bilateral gamma adjustment (BIGA) function combined with the cuckoo search algorithm is used for adaptively increasing the overall brightness of image. In addition, the brightness preserving Bi-histogram construction based on visual salience algorithm (BBHCVS) is proposed to respectively conserve the brightness and improve the contrast of low illuminance color images. Finally, the processed HSI color space is transformed into RGB color space to get the enhanced image. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed BBHCVS algorithm can effectively enhance the visual salient areas of human perception, and also significantly improve the contrast and brightness of image compared with other well-known and state-of-the-art methods.

Virtual reality (VR) safety training systems can enhance safety awareness while supporting health assessment in various work conditions. This paper proposes a novel VR system for construction safety training, which augments an individual’s functioning in VR via a brain–computer interface of electroencephalography (EEG) and physiology data such as blood pressure and heart rate. The use of VR aims to support high levels of interactions and immersion. Crucially, we apply novel clipping training algorithms to improve the performance of a deep EEG neural network, including batch normalization and ELU activation functions for real-time assessment. It significantly improves the system performance in time efficiency while maintaining high accuracy of over 80% on the testing datasets. For assessing workers’ competence under various construction environments, the risk assessment metrics are developed based on a statistical model and workers’ EEG data. One hundred and seventeen construction workers in Shanghai took part in the study. Nine of the participants’ EEG is identified with highly abnormal levels by the proposed evaluation metric. They have undergone further medical examinations, and among them, six are diagnosed with high-risk health conditions. It proves that our system plays a significant role in understanding workers’ physical condition, enhancing safety awareness, and reducing accidents.

A dynamic multi-region computable general equilibrium (CGE) model is used to analyze virtual water and its effect in the Huaihe River basin, which includes Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong and Henan provinces. The baseline scenario was first constructed to describe the trade situation and virtual water among different regions and sectors from 2009–2020. Then two hypothetical policy scenarios were set to analyze the economic, water consumption and virtual water trade impacts under different policy shocks. The results show that (1) the Huaihe River basin was a net virtual water outflow region, with 13.977 × 109 m3 virtual water transferred outside the river basin in 2009, and 26.653 × 109 m3 VW transferred to outside in 2020. Jiangsu is the largest virtual water outflow province (mainly flows to outside), followed by Anhui. Anhui suffers from severe water shortage, but provides a net virtual water outflow to Henan, Jiangsu and Shandong and outside; (2) reducing Anhui's agricultural output (S1 scenario) and Anhui's agricultural virtual water outflow (S2 scenario) can not only reduce virtual water trade but also save water, but S1 scenario reduced net virtual water outflow by more, and saved more water. S1 had a positive effect on gross domestic product (GDP), but reduced the employment rate.
