A Darriwilian (late Middle Ordovician) brachiopod fauna from the Lower Formation of the Chiatsun Group at Jiacun, northern Nyalam, southern Tibet, consists of ten brachiopod species, forming a distinct Aporthophyla- Paralenorthis Association. Its taxonomic composition is typical of the Aporthophyla Fauna that occupied lower BA2 to upper BA3 benthic environments on sandy lime mud substrates. The occurrence of Paralenorthis in southern Tibet is confirmed for the first time, represented by P. costata sp. nov. Numerical analyses ( PCA and CA) of 18 Darriwilian brachiopod faunas from ten palaeoplates or terranes indicate that: (1) the Aporthophyla Fauna was confined to a specific latitudinal belt although it had a wide lateral distribution from the large palaeocontinents of Gondwana to Laurentia; (2) the Saucrorthis Fauna, a typical late Middle Ordovician regional fauna, is limited to a much smaller area, marginal to the Gondwana supercontinent; (3) the strong provincialism persistent in the late Middle Ordovician contributed to increased gamma biodiversity during the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event. The Early Devonian graptolite fauna of the Arctic Islands comprises the highest species content (17 species) in the world. In spite of this richness, no new species have been recognized; instead already-existing species, scattered around the then-known continents, suggest that relatively complete cosmopolitanism held sway for graptolites. Canadian Arctic biozonation is very similar to schemes elsewhere, consisting of the uniformis and hercynicus biozones in the Lochkovian, falcarius in the lower Pragian, and an expanded yukonensis Biozone in the upper Pragian and the lower Emsian. Three genera and 17 species are recognized: ' Monograptus' ( microdon cf. microdon, microdon curvatus); Neomonograptus (cf. atopus, aequabilis, bardoensis, falcarius, notoaequabilis); and Uncinatograptus ( birchensis, craigensis, hercynicus, langgunensis, parangustidens, subhercynicus, telleri, thomasi, uniformis, yukonensis). Tangshanaspis Zhou and Zhang, 1978 (Family Missisquoiidae), has been reported widely from western North America and has been assigned invariably to a single species, T. depressa (Stitt, 1971 b). The base of the T. depressa Subzone as defined in Oklahoma is an important biostratigraphic datum for inter-regional correlation of uppermost Cambrian strata. Study of previously undescribed material in collections from Oklahoma shows that T. depressa is, in fact, a composite of cranidia and pygidia that belong to two stratigraphically segregated species in the Signal Mountain Formation. Tangshanaspis silveri n. sp. includes the pygidial morph originally attributed to T. depressa. Revision of the species from Oklahoma allows definition of a new biostratigraphic unit, the Tangshanaspis Zone, which is divided into a lower T. silveri Fauna and an overlying T. depressa Fauna; in addition to the eponymous species, the T. depressa Fauna includes pygidia that represent two additional species of Tangshanaspis that are placed in open nomenclature. Correlation with other areas suggests that the ' Missisquoia' mackenziensis Fauna of northern Canada may be equivalent to the T. silveri Fauna of Oklahoma, rather than a pre- Tangshanaspis interval that is unrepresented elsewhere in Laurentian North America. Four species of olenelloid trilobites characterized by advanced or robust genal spines are described from the lower Cambrian Rabbit Point Formation (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 4) of eastern Devon Island, representing the most diverse assemblage of olenelloids yet described from Arctic Canada. The genus represents one of the earliest taxa of axonophoran graptolites with geniculate thecae, but its current status and evolutionary relationships are difficult to access even after a number of cladistic analyses have been executed. (Ruedemann), a poorly known little species from the lower Darriwilian of eastern North America is interpreted as a possible member of the genus. The species belongs to a group of axonophorans with highly asymmetrical proximal end and pattern C astogeny, characterized by the lack of an apertural spine on th12, ranging from the Biozone (Darriwilian) to the Biozone (Sandbian). Specimens are common in North America and the Argentinian Precordillera, but have not been reported from any Atlantic Faunal Realm localities. The distribution of the group indicates a restriction to the Pacific Faunal Realm, providing the earliest indication of a developing biogeographic differentiation of axonophoran graptolites after their origin in the oceanic biofacies during the Upper Dapingian to lower Darriwilian time interval. is described as a new species. The Hirnantia Fauna is a globally-represented, cool water brachiopod fauna that originated and flourished in shallow marine environments at intermediate to low latitudes after the first episode of the end-Ordovician mass extinction. It was well-developed, widely distributed, long in stratigraphical range, and complex in palaeoecological differentiation on the Upper Yangtze Platform of the South China paleoplate, where it has been extensively studied. Qualitative and quantitative analyses show that the FAD of the Hirnantia Fauna in South China becomes stratigraphically higher from nearshore to offshore localities on the Yangtze Platform, while the range of the fauna becomes shorter whereas the taxonomic diversity increases. Over its stratigraphical range the diversity of the Hirnantia Fauna at nearshore localities consistently decreases, but trends in the opposite direction at offshore, deeper water localities. The fauna was represented by different communities, subcommunities or associations with changing environmental factors (such as water depth and substrate) at different localities or horizons. Examination of topotype material of the type species of Dalmanella, D. testudinaria, from the Hirnantian strata of Borenshult, southern Sweden, revealed several diagnostic characters that distinguish the type species from some common North American species assigned previously to the genus. The typical Dalmanella testudinaria has a consistently developed, primary medial interspace in the dorsal valve, a cardinal process with an invariably bilobed myophore, punctae of two distinctly different sizes, and a lack of aditicules. In contrast, many Late Ordovician species from North America, such as 'Dalmanella' meeki and 'Dalmanella' multisecta from the Cincinnati type area, consistently have a dorsal medial costa, with a strong tendency to develop aditicules and a trilobate cardinal process. This study confirms the previous notion of many authors that true Dalmanella testudinaria, or the genus as a whole, is either rare or entirely absent in North America. Typical Dalmanella was predominant in cool-water depositional environments (such as the Hirnantia Fauna), whereas the North American dalmanellids (e.g. Cincinnati-type 'Dalmanella', Paucicrura, and Diceromyonia) were most abundant and diverse in tropical, epicontinental sea settings. A clear definition of the true Dalmanella, therefore, has important implications for the study of Late Ordovician-Early Silurian brachiopod evolution, paleoecology, and paleobiogeography. The lower Meitan Formation (Floian, upper Lower Ordovician) at the Dajiaosi section, Zunyi District, northern Guizhou Province of South China, contains a moderately rich and diverse Sinorthis Fauna, with 22 species attributable separately to 15 families and seven orders of brachiopods. The fauna can be differentiated into three associations: the Paralenorthis serica, the Sinorthis typica, and the Tarfaya intercalare associations. These occupied a relatively wide palaeoecological range from lower BA3 to upper BA2 settings and from silty to clay substrate conditions. In South China, the Early Ordovician brachiopod radiation was marked by the diversification of the orthide-dominated Sinorthis Fauna, which first appeared and diversified in the middle part (relatively deep water) of the Upper Yangtze Platform in the Didymograptellus eobifidus Biozone, but rapidly declined in the succeeding Corymbograptus deflexus and basal Azygograptus suecicus biozones. During the latest Floian and early Dapingian, it expanded into comparatively shallow-water settings in the onshore direction (Changning area, southern Sichuan), offshore carbonate platform (Yichang, Hubei), and areas adjacent to the submergent Qianzhong Arch (such as the Zunyi area). The first appearance datum of the Sinorthis Fauna in shallower-water settings generally postdates that in the deeper-water environment in the central Upper Yangtze Platform, probably as a result of the fauna tracking a favoured BA3 setting during a gradual marine transgression. Abstract: The Ordovician radiation is the earliest and most important biodiversification event in the evolution of the Paleozoic Evolutionary Fauna (PEF), when the basic framework of PEF was established. The radiation underwent a gradual, protracted process spanning more than 40 million years and was marked by several diversity maxima of the PEF. Case studies conducted on the Upper Yangtze Platform (South China Palaeoplate) showed that the Ordovician radiation was characterized by drastic increases in α- and β-diversity in various groups of organisms. During the radiation, brachiopods, trilobites, and graptolites of the PEF became more diverse to dominate over the Cambrian Evolutionary Fauna (CEF) in all marine environments. At either global or regional scales, however, the Ordovician radiation was highly heterogeneous in time and space, and the rate and pattern of radiation exhibited by different major fossil groups were also variable. Systematic and statistical study of brachiopods from the Dawan Formation of the Yichang area, western Hubei Province, central China, indicates that, at generic and specific levels, the α diversity of Early to Mid Ordovician brachiopods in the study area reached the first acme at the beginning of the Corymbograptus deflexus Biozone, marked by the diverse Sinorthis typica Community. This diversity maximum of brachiopods occurred approximately one biozone later than that of the Upper Yangtze Platform. In taxonomic constituents, the main contributors to the diversity maximum were orthoids, which experienced a major increase in the number of genera in the upper Didymograptellus eobifidus Biozone and the lower C. deflexus Biozone. In brachiopod communities or associations, orthoids and pentameroids were the dominant elements. Analyses of Early–Mid Ordovician brachiopods from the Upper Yangtze Platform indicate that a high level of brachiopod community organization, with temporal and spatial stability, was achieved by the Sinorthis Community, which persisted from the D. eobifidus to the Azygograptus suecicus biozones (early Arenig). In the D. eobifidus Biozone, the Sinorthis Community thrived across a wide ecological range (BA3 to upper BA4) in the siliciclastic facies of the central part of the Upper Yangtze Platform and, by the latest D. eobifidus interval, invaded more carbonate-rich substrates in more offshore settings in the northeastern part of the platform (the present Yichang area). Gypidula was a common pentameride brachiopod in the Silurian and Devonian periods and its oldest-known form, Gypidula akimiskiformis new species, occurs as a common component of a distinct Gypidula Association of the rich and diverse reef-dwelling brachiopod fauna in the Lower Silurian (upper Telychian) Attawapiskat Formation of the Hudson Bay Basin. This pioneer species has a high degree of morphological plasticity, with several infraspecific variations significant for the study of gypiduloid taxonomy and early evolution: 1) the sparsely costate shells may have strong to faint medial ribs, with some shells being quasi-smooth and 2) the inner hinge plates are commonly basomedially inclined toward the dorsal valve floor (not united to form a cruralium), but may also be subparallel or slightly basolaterally divergent toward the valve floor (similar to those in Clorinda). This implies that the basomedially inclined inner hinge plates were not a stable character at the initial stage of evolution of Gypidula during the late Telychian. Another gypiduloid from the Attawapiskat Formation, Erilevigatella euthylomata new genus and species, is characterized by a shell lacking fold or sulcus but having Clorinda-type, basolaterally divergent inner hinge plates and double-flanged crura. Compared to Levigatella, which has been regarded as an intermediate between Clorinda and Gypidula because of its Gypidula-type dorsal sulcus and Clorinda-type inner hinge plates, the rectimarginate shells of Erilevigatella make the distinction between Clorinda and Gypidula even more blurred at the early stage of their evolution. Stegerhynchus was perhaps the most common rhynchonellide brachiopod in the Early Silurian (Llandovery) postextinction brachiopod fauna of North America. In shell morphology, it closely resembles the Late Ordovician rhynchonellide Rhynchotrema in having a rostrate shell posterior and simple, strong costae. It differs internally from Rhynchotrema primarily in having a much-reduced septalium (=cruralium). Superficially Stegerhynchus has a conservative, typically simple, rhynchonellide morphology, but detailed biometric analysis of large samples from the >400 m-thick Llandovery (mid-Aeronian to mid-Telychian) tropical carbonate succession of Anticosti Island reveals that the genus underwent significant evolutionary and ecophenotypic changes over about five million years. The shell length/width ratios of Stegerhynchus peneborealis from sediments of a low-energy, muddy substrate tend to be lower than those of S. deltolingulatus new species from high-energy, reef or inter-reef settings. A wider shell and hingeline probably had a greater stability on the soft seafloor. Also a wider shell appears to be associated with a larger (relative to shell size) sulcus size at the anterior margin. The changes in relative sulcus size either represent ecophenotypic variation in response to environmental conditions, or a random effect of evolutionary selection through time. Both multivariate and single-character analyses demonstrate that two important biometric features, the apical angle and shell flank rib number, separate all forms of Anticosti Island Stegerhynchus (middle Aeronian to middle Telychian) from the widely cited European species Stegerhynchus borealis (latest Telychian-Wenlock) from the type area of Gotland, Sweden. The Middle Devonian Winnipegosis reefs in the southern Saskatchewan portion of the Elk Point Basin contain extensive vadose diagenetic features, such as dissolution breccia, and cavities/caves filled by microbialite, pisolite and anhydrite. Basinal facies adjacent to reef buildups are characterized by the Ratner laminite, which consists of three brining-upward successions of laterally continuous, laminated dolomite and anhydrite. The basal cycle starts with a relatively thick unit of anhydrite-free, millimeter-scale dololaminite, changing upward into interlaminated carbonate and anhydrite, and ending with enterolithic, nodular to mosaic anhydrite. Subsequent cycles generally lack the dololaminite of the basal cycle. The Ratner laminite grades upward into the bedded to massive mosaic anhydrite of the Whitkow Member (lower Prairie Evaporite) in areas adjacent to reefs. Deposition of the Ratner laminite and the Whitkow Anhydrite is interpreted as genetically related to the vadose diagenetic processes, when the Elk Point Basin became restricted. The carbonate laminite in the basal Ratner was accumulated when seepage of fresh marine water through the barrier kept pace with the rate of evaporation, preventing a complete drawdown and desiccation of the basin. Precipitation of the laminated carbonate was stimulated by vadose diagenesis of the carbonate buildups and by microbial activity. Each Ratner brining-upward succession represents a progressive drawdown when the rate of basin brine evaporation exceeded seepage of marine water into the basin. Marine water seeping through the reefs was enriched in calcium cations by Mg−Ca exchange with the limestone (dolomitization) and by dissolution of reef rocks, and was responsible for the precipitation of calcium sulphate in areas adjacent to the carbonate reefs through brine mixing processes. During vadose diagenesis of the Winnipegosis reefs and deposition of the Ratner laminite and Whitkow Anhydrite, brine level in the barred Elk Point Basin was controlled by the rate of seepage of marine water through the barrier, which in turn was controlled by eustatic sea level changes in the open ocean. The basal anhydrite-free dololaminite of the Ratner represents a Falling Stage System Tract when evaporative drawdown was largely compensated by seepage of marine water into the basin. The interlaminated carbonate and anhydrite of the middle and upper Ratner are interpreted as a Lowstand System Tract associated with evaporative drawdown and increased cyanobacterial activity under near-desiccation conditions when evaporation exceeded seepage. The Whitkow Anhydrite represents a Transgressive System Tract deposited during sea level rise in the open ocean that led to an increased rate of seepage, higher basin brine level and diminished microbial influence on bedding structures. The Beishan orogenic zone is a key area to understand evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt that is an accretionary factory well‐enough preserved in the Paleozoic. In early Paleozoic, the tectonic mélange zone containing the coherent unit and mélange unit is triggered by the complicated accretionary process of the Beishan area. The early Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Beishan orogenic zone is investigated in this study using sedimentology and stratigraphic correlations of the lowe Paleozoic deposits. From the Cambrian to the middle Ordovician, this region was characterized by geographically extensive, flat‐bedded siliceous mudstone, indicating the existence of a large ocean basin. The oceanic plate entered the convergence phase in terms of the Wilson Circle during the Middle Ordovician, when numerous magmatic arcs formed along two opposite sides of the ocean. The magmatic arcs became the widest during the Silurian, suggesting that the Hongliuhe‐Niujuanzi‐Xichangjing Ocean (HNX; a southern branch of the Paleo Asian Ocean) was reduced to a small residual ocean in the central Beishan region by that time, and probably lasted till the Carboniferous or later by newly published data.
