Abstract

Introduction: The widespread clinical and environmental dissemination of successful clones of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) represents a serious global public health threat. In this context, lytic bacteriophages have emerged as a promising alternative for controlling these pathogens. This study describes the biological, structural, and genomic characteristics of lytic bacteriophages against the high-risk CRKP clones CG258 and ST307 and describes their performance in combination. Methods: An experimental study was carried out. Bacteriophages were isolated from hospital wastewater and from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Bacteriophages were isolated using the double layer agar technique and their characterization included host range (individual and cocktail), plating efficiency (EOP), infection or bacterial killing curve, one-step curve, bacteriophage stability at pH and temperature conditions, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and whole genome sequencing. Results: After purification, five active bacteriophages against CRKP were obtained, three bacteriophages (FKP3, FKP4 and FKP14) had targeted activities against CG258 CRKP and two (FKP10 and FKP12) against ST307 isolates. Seven cocktails were prepared, of which Cocktail 2, made up of the bacteriophages FKP3, FKP10, and FKP14, showed the best activity against 85.7% (n = 36/42) of CRKP isolates belonging to both clones, CG258 (80.8%; n = 21/26) and ST307 (93.8%, n = 15/16). The efficiency of the plating (EOP), infection curve, and one-step growth curve showed that the cocktail phages efficiently infected other CRKP isolates (EOP ≥ 0.5), controlled bacterial growth up to 73.5%, and had short latency periods, respectively, (5–10 min). In addition, they were stable at temperatures between 4°C and 50°C and pH between 4 and 10. All bacteriophages belonged to the Caudoviricetes class, and no genes associated with virulence factors or antibiotic resistance were detected. Conclusion: These findings showed bacteriophages and phage cocktails with high specificity against CRKP belonging to the successful clones CG258 and ST307 with promising characteristics, making them an alternative for controlling these clones in different environmental or health settings, biocontrol agents, or disinfectants in industry and in the field of diagnosis. Abstract

Human‐wildlife conflicts have increased and are particularly acute when predators are involved. A frequent source of conflict is some people's misbeliefs related to the alleged impact of predators on game species and livestock. In this context, quantifying the impact of expanding predators on their prey can be useful in designing conflict mitigation strategies. We estimated the predation impact of the Egyptian mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon), an expanding mesocarnivore in southwestern Europe, on European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and red‐legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) populations, two declining prey species highly valued by hunters. We estimated mongoose densities in three areas of central Spain through live capture, GPS/VHF tagging, camera‐trapping and spatial mark‐resight models. Rabbit and partridge densities were estimated through transect counts and distance sampling. We quantified the mongoose diet by scat analysis. Finally, we compared the number of individuals consumed by the predator population with the estimated total prey populations. European rabbits were the most important mongoose food in two of the study areas, whereas red‐legged partridges were rarely consumed in all the areas. Rabbit density varied widely among study areas (14.0–881.4 rabbits/km2), while partridge density was low in all the areas (2.3–6.9 partridges/km2). The predation impact on rabbits was low in the area with the highest rabbit density (1.9–3.8% of estimated population) and higher (5.6–29%) in the other areas. In contrast, the predation impact on partridge populations was low (<9%) in all the study areas. This is the first study that estimates the Egyptian mongoose impact on small‐game species, a necessary step to deal with the conflicts over the management of this expanding species. The study of predation impact may contribute to the effective management of human‐wildlife conflicts involving predators, by improving the understanding of where additional management may take place to protect prey species or deter predator populations. 175. Probing the Circumnuclear Stellar Populations of Starburst Galaxies in the Near-infrared

Abstract

We employ the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility's near-infrared spectrograph SpeX at 0.8-2.4$\mu$m to investigate the spatial distribution of the stellar populations (SPs) in four well known Starburst galaxies: NGC34, NGC1614, NGC3310 and NGC7714. We use the STARLIGHT code updated with the synthetic simple stellar populations models computed by Maraston (2005, M05). Our main results are that the NIR light in the nuclear surroundings of the galaxies is dominated by young/intermediate age SPs ($t \leq 2\times10^9$yr), summing from $\sim$40\% up to 100\% of the light contribution. In the nuclear aperture of two sources (NGC1614 and NGC3310) we detected a predominant old SP component ($t > 2\times10^9$yr), while for NGC34 and NGC7714 the younger component prevails. Furthermore, we found evidence of a circumnuclear star formation ring-like structure and a secondary nucleus in NGC1614, in agreement with previous studies. We also suggest that the merger/interaction experienced by three of the galaxies studied, NGC1614, NGC3310 and NGC7714 can explain the lower metallicity values derived for the young SP component of these sources. In this scenario the fresh unprocessed metal poorer gas from the destroyed/interacting companion galaxy is driven to the centre of the galaxies and mixed with the central region gas, before star formation takes place. In order to deepen our analysis, we performed the same procedure of SP synthesis using Maraston (2011, M11) EPS models. Our results show that the newer and higher resolution M11 models tend to enhance the old/intermediate age SP contribution over the younger ages.

Abstract

We present spectroscopic and photometric observations of the emission-line star MWC 930 (V446 Sct) during its long-term optical brightening in 2006--2013. Based on our earlier data we suggested that the object has features found in Luminous Blue Variables (LBV), such as a high luminosity (~3 10^5 Lsun, a low wind terminal velocity (~ 140 km/s), and a tendency to show strong brightness variations (~1 mag over 20 years). For the last ~7 years it has been exhibiting a continuous optical and near-IR brightening along with a change of the emission-line spectrum appearance and cooling of the star's photosphere. We present the object's $V$--band light curve, analyze the spectral variations, and compare the observed properties with those of other recognized Galactic LBVs, such as AG Car and HR Car. Overall we conclude the MWC 930 is a bona fide Galactic LBV that is currently in the middle of an S Dor cycle., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We investigate the crystal structure stability of the cage compound FeGa3 in the presence of Fe antisite disorder (namely as Fe0.258Ga0.742) using room-temperature x-ray diffraction (XRD) as a function of pressure up to 38 GPa. Our results show a crystal structure instability, with the emergence of a second crystallographic phase of different symmetry at a critical pressure in the range of Pc ≈ 16 - 18 GPa, similar to what was previously reported for pristine FeGa3. Our results are a first step in understanding the effect of pressure in the crystal structure of FeGa3 in the presence of disorder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Through two focus groups, we explored the needs, fears and experiences of patients who had recently undergone, or were scheduled for, surgery under general anaesthesia, with regard to the entire perioperative process.Materials and Methods: Adults were invited to participate in a focus group if they had (a) undergone abdominal or gynaecological surgery with general anaesthesia in the past 4 months (focus group 1) or (b) been indicated for abdominal or gynaecological surgery and were waiting for the assigned surgery date (focus group 2). Discussions were audio recorded and, through thematic analysis, patients’ needs and experiences/perceptions regarding perioperative surgical stages were obtained/coded. Analysis of code co-occurrence was performed using a codes matrix.Results: Focus groups consisted of 13 females, 1 male (50% aged > 45 years). The immediate postoperative period generated the highest number of co-occurrences, followed by the indication of surgery. The most frequent code was the need for information, especially at the indication of surgery, the pre-anaesthesia clinic and in the postoperative period. Fears were described particularly at the indication of surgery, the waiting period, the surgical room, anaesthesia induction and the postoperative period, particularly after hospital discharge; pain was cited most commonly in the postoperative period. Stress/anxiety and emotional impact were also cited in the postoperative period including home arrival.Conclusion: Information collected in these patients’ focus groups should inform future research and healthcare planning. Patients demand receiving more comprehensive and understandable information and more involvement in several steps; this could reduce fears and stress/anxiety described across the perioperative process. Abstract

The aerosols (clouds and hazes) on Uranus are one of the main elements for understanding the thermal structure and dynamics of its atmosphere. Aerosol particles absorb and scatter the solar radiation, directly affecting the energy balance that drives the atmospheric dynamics of the planet. In this sense, aerosol information such as the vertical distribution or optical properties is essential for characterizing the interactions between sunlight and aerosol particles at each altitude in the atmosphere and for understanding the energy balance of the planet’s atmosphere. Moreover, the distribution of aerosols in the atmosphere provides key information on the global circulation of the planet (e.g., regions of upwelling or subsidence). To address this challenge, we propose the Uranus Multi-experiment Radiometer (UMR), a lightweight instrument designed to characterize the aerosols in Uranus’ atmosphere as part of the upcoming Uranus Flagship mission’s descending probe payload. The scientific goals of UMR are: (1) to study the variation of the solar radiation in the ultra-violet (UV) with altitude and characterize the energy deposition in the atmosphere; (2) to study the vertical distribution of the hazes and clouds and characterize their scattering and optical properties; (3) to investigate the heating rates of the atmosphere by directly measuring the upward and downward fluxes; and (4) to study the cloud vertical distribution and composition at pressures where sunlight is practically negligible (p > 4-5 bars). The instrument includes a set of photodetectors, field-of-view masks, a light infrared lamp, and interference filters. It draws on the heritage of previous instruments developed at the Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA) that participated in the exploration of Mars, where similar technology has demonstrated its endurance in extreme environments while utilizing limited resources regarding power consumption, mass and volume footprints, and data budget. Abstract

The Geosciences for a Sustainable Planet network is an initiative reinforced by the recent integration of the Spanish Geological Survey (IGME) and the Oceanographic Spanish Institute (IEO) within the Spanish Scientific Research Council (CSIC). The network is aimed to provide Geosciences in Spain with a collaborative framework, to maximize synergies and address sustainability and future challenges with a planetary perspective. The network shares the strategic vision for the study and care of planet Earth as the only home available for our future, as embraced by many international organizations (e. g. the European Geosciences Union (EGU), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), and the European Marine Board (EMB)). In Spain, Geosciences have played a fundamental role in properly assessing, managing, and seeking solutions for several natural and anthropogenic crises, e.g. the oil spill after the sinking of the Prestige petroleum vessel, the dumping of toxic mine sludge in Aznalcóllar, the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma island, the 2011 earthquake of Lorca, the environmental collapse of the Mar Menor oastal lagoon, or the decline in the groundwaters of Doñana National Park. Geoscientists have engaged as first responders with government agencies in emergency situations. Besides, geosciences is providing essential knowledge for public administration, as well as energy and mineral resources companies, water supply, contamination and waste elimination and reuse, and adaptation to geological and natural hazards. The network will enhance the capacity of the CSIC to respond to both, societal and public administration demands. Geosciences also provide the temporal and spatial scale to place current climate and environmental crises in the appropriate context. Abstract

To introduce promotional H2O effects for both CH4 rate and C2 selectivity, the OH radical formation, catalyzed through H2O activation with O2 surface species, was critical for modeling selective Mn-K2WO4/SiO2 catalysts. Based on our reported experimental evidence, which demonstrates the formation of H2O2 through surface alkali peroxide intermediate, the elementary reactions that account for the OH-mediated pathway were added into the microkinetic model. The advanced model adeptly replicated the promotional H2O effects on both OCM rate and selectivity. The data from a low-pressure microkinetic study were treated isothermally, and extended for near-industrially relevant pressures up to 901 kPa. Thermal visualization using an infrared camera found substantial temperature increases at undiluted high-pressure conditions which caused C2 selectivity to drop significantly. When the furnace temperatures were decreased after ignition, side reactions after O2 depletion (e.g., hydrocarbon reforming) were suppressed, obtaining 13.7 (11.8) % yields at 19.9 % CH4 conversion with 68.6 (59.1) % selectivities for C2-4 (C2) at 901 kPa. The temperature was found to be the determining factor of C2 yield which was perturbed by varying space velocity or CH4/O2 ratios. The optimum temperature for high-pressure conditions was predicted as 885 °C at 901 kPa. Abstract

There exists a diversity of weak Local Linearization (LL) schemes for the integration of stochastic differential equations with additive noise, which differ with respect to the algorithm that is employed in the numerical implementation of the weak Local Linear discretizations. On the contrary to the Local Linear discretization, the rate of convergence of the LL schemes has not been considered up to now. In this work, a general theorem about this issue is derived and further is applied to a number of specific schemes. As application, the convergence rate of weak LL schemes for equations with jumps is also presented.

Abstract

We present an observational study of the interaction effect on the dynamics and morphology of the minor merger AM1219-430. This work is based on r' and g' images and long-slit spectra obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at the Gemini South Telescope. We detected a tidal tail in the main galaxy (AM1219A) and a bridge of material connecting the galaxies. In luminosity, AM1219A is about 3.8 times brighter than the secondary (AM1219B). The surface brightness profile of AM1219A was decomposed into bulge and disc components. The profile shows a light excess of ~ 53 % due to the contribution of star-forming regions, which is typical of starburst galaxies. On the other hand, the surface brightness profile of AM1219B shows a lens structure in addition to the bulge and disc. The scale lengths and central magnitudes of the disc structure of both galaxies agree with the average values derived for galaxies with no sign of ongoing interaction or disturbed morphology. The S\'ersic index (n<2), the effective and scale radii of the bulge of both galaxies are typical of pseudo-bulges. The rotation curve of AM1219A derived from the emission line of ionized gas is quite asymmetric, suggesting a gas perturbed by interaction. We explore all possible values of stellar and dark matter masses. The overall best-fitting solution for the mass distribution of AM1219A was found with M/L for bulge and disc of M/L_b=2.8_-0.4^+0.4 and M/L_d=2.4_-0.2^+0.3, respectively, and a Navarro, Frenk and White profile of M_200=2.0_-0.4^+0.5 x10^12 M_sun and c=16.0_-1.1^+1.2. Abstract

We study the interaction of a two-level atom and two fields, one of them classical. We obtain an effective Hamiltonian for this system by using a method recently introduced that produces a small rotation to the Hamiltonian that allows to neglect some terms in the rotated Hamiltonian. Then we solve a variation of the Schr\"odinger equation that models decoherence as the system evolves through intrinsic mechanisms beyond conventional quantum mechanics rather than dissipative interaction with an environment.

Abstract

To rectify the problems of electron clouds observed in RHIC and unacceptable ohmic heating for superconducting magnets that can limit future machine upgrades, we started developing a robotic plasma deposition technique for $in-situ$ coating of the RHIC 316LN stainless steel cold bore tubes based on staged magnetrons mounted on a mobile mole for deposition of Cu followed by amorphous carbon (a-C) coating. The Cu coating reduces wall resistivity, while a-C has low SEY that suppresses electron cloud formation. Recent RF resistivity computations indicate that 10 {\mu}m of Cu coating thickness is needed. But, Cu coatings thicker than 2 {\mu}m can have grain structures that might have lower SEY like gold black. A 15-cm Cu cathode magnetron was designed and fabricated, after which, 30 cm long samples of RHIC cold bore tubes were coated with various OFHC copper thicknesses; room temperature RF resistivity measured. Rectangular stainless steel and SS discs were Cu coated.
