Purpose: Assessing the severity of breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) requires various clinical tools, yet no standardized methodology is available. Ultrasonography shows promise for diagnosing lymphedema and evaluating its severity. This study explored the clinical utility of ultrasonography in patients with BCRL. Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, patients with unilateral BCRL were examined. The analyzed data included demographics, lymphedema location, International Society of Lymphology (ISL) stage, surgical history, treatment regimens, and arm circumference. Skin, subcutis, and muscle thicknesses were assessed ultrasonographically at predetermined sites, and the percentage of excess thickness was calculated. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed to identify associations between ultrasonographic measurements and advanced lymphedema (ISL 2 or 3). The Lymphedema Quality of Life arm questionnaire was used to evaluate patient-reported outcomes regarding lymphedema and their correlations with ultrasonographic findings. Results: Among 118 patients, 71 were classified as ISL 0-1 and 47 as ISL 2-3. Patients with advanced lymphedema were older, had higher nodal stages, underwent more axillary lymph node dissections, and had higher rates of dominant-arm lymphedema. Multivariate logistic regression revealed significant associations of greater skin thickness (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 4.634; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.233 to 17.419), subcutis thickness (adjusted OR, 7.741; 95% CI, 1.649 to 36.347), and subcutis echogenicity (adjusted OR, 4.860; 95% CI, 1.517 to 15.566) with advanced lymphedema. Furthermore, greater skin thickness (P=0.016) and subcutis echogenicity (P=0.023) were correlated with appearance-related discomfort. Conclusion: Ultrasonographic measurements were significantly associated with advanced lymphedema in BCRL. Ultrasonography represents a valuable diagnostic and severity assessment tool for lymphedema. Objective: The rich botanical biodiversity resulting from diverse climates and geographical distinctiveness offers a plethora of biological resources that can be pivotal in developing innovative biomaterials. This investigation sought to evaluate the functional properties of indigenous Korean plant species. Methods: Forty-six indigenous plants during a year-long expedition across inhabited and uninhabited Korean islands were collected. The plant specimens were divided into 5 parts (flower, fruit, stem, leaf, and whole body) and subjected to extraction using water, 30% ethanol, and 70% ethanol, followed by characterizations of anti-inflammatory, immune response, and anti-bacterial activity. Results: Thirty-eight percent of the extracts (59 extracts from 31 species) exhibited statistically significant anti-inflammatory effects. Concurrently, 22% of the extracts (35 extracts from 24 species) demonstrated notable immune boosting effects. Additionally, 17 extracts exhibited significant inhibitory effects against the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Conclusion: This study highlights the potential utility of extracts of plants from Korean islands as natural agents for next-generation pharmaceutical and medical applications by emphasizing their effectiveness in combating inflammation, enhancing immune responses, and conferring anti-bacterial benefits. Background/Aim: The RNA binding protein quaking (QKI) is associated with the development and progression of tumor suppressors in various cancers. However, the clinical implications of QKI expression have not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of QKI expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and Methods: We performed QKI, Zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1), E-cadherin, and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) immunohistochemical staining on 166 HCC patient tissue samples. X-tile bioinformatics software was used to set the cut-off value for high QKI expression. Correlations between QKI expression and various clinicopathological parameters were assessed. Results: The best cut-off value for high QKI expression was 12.5. High QKI expression was observed in 28 of 166 patients (16.9%) and was an independent prognostic factor for inferior recurrence-free survival (RFS). In addition, high ZEB1 and GPX4 expression correlated with high QKI expression, but not with the loss of E-cadherin expression. Conclusion: High QKI expression was identified in HCCs and associated with poor RFS. QKI might be a prognostic biomarker of HCCs associated with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and a potential candidate therapeutic target. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aim: Gastric cancer and its precancerous lesions represent a significant public health concern. A subset of gastric cancers exhibits mutations in the TP53 gene, often accompanying distinctive morphologic alterations. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic efficacy of p53 immunostaining in real-world clinical settings. Patients and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 50 cases of gastric tumors and tumor-like lesions, wherein p53 immunostaining played a pivotal diagnostic role. The staining pattern of p53 was examined in conjunction with clinicopathologic parameters. Results: Mutant p53 staining pattern demonstrated a significant association with high-grade nuclear atypia (p<0.001), highgrade dysplasia, and tubular adenocarcinoma (p<0.001), as well as microsatellite instability status (p=0.034). Furthermore, the diagnostic utility of p53 immunostaining was evident in scenarios where: 1) biopsy specimens contained few tumor cells, 2) pathologic evaluation of resection margins was limited by cauterization artifacts, and 3) distinction between low-grade and high-grade gastric dysplasia was challenging. Conclusion: P53 immunostaining can be helpful for the diagnosis of gastric tumor and tumorlike lesions, and accurate pathologic margin evaluation, particularly in lesions demonstrating intestinal-type differentiation and some degree of nuclear atypia. Purpose: To evaluate the inhibitory effects of Streptococcus salivarius K12 and M18 strains on the growth of six oral pathogens as well as their release of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), and whether these probiotics can inhibit the expression of arginine-specific gingipain A (RgpA), a protease secreted by Porphyromonas gingivalis. Materials and Methods: After six halitogenic oral pathogens (P. gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Parvimonas micra, and Eikenella corrodens) were cultured with or without S. salivarius K12 and M18, the concentration of two VSCs was measured. Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of S. salivarius K12 and M18 against these pathogens and the suppressive effect on RgpA release by P. gingivalis were assessed. Results: In the co-culture of S. salivarius K12 or M18 with oral pathogenic bacteria, the growth of all six oral pathogens was significantly inhibited (p < 0.01). Additionally, S. salivarius K12 and M18 had an inhibitory effect on the production of the halitogenic substances H2S and CH3SH (p < 0.01) as well as the expression of P. gingivalis RgpA. Finally, we demonstrated that the addition of only culture supernatants of the two strains K12/M18 to oral pathogen cultures was sufficient to mimic the effects of K12/M18 co-cultures upon VSCs production and protease expression. Conclusions: S. salivarius K12 and M18 inhibited VSC release by all six of the major oral pathogens that were assayed and reduced the expression of RgpA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
