Abstract

Debating was an important part of schoolgirls' political education in late Victorian and Edwardian England that has been overlooked in the scholarship on female education and civics instruction. Debates offered middle- and working-class schoolgirls an embodied and interactive education for citizenship. Considering both the content of discussions and the process of debating, this article argues that school debates provided a unique opportunity for girls to discuss political ideas and develop political skills. Debates became intertwined with girls' peer cultures, challenging contemporary and historiographical assumptions of girlhood apoliticism. Positioning girls as political subjects sheds new light on political change in modern Britain. Schoolgirl debates show how gendered political boundaries were shifting in this period. Within the unique space of the school debating chamber, girls were free to appropriate and subvert 'masculine' political subjects and ways of speaking. In mock parliaments, schoolgirls re-created the archetypal male political space of the House of Commons, demonstrating their familiarity with parliamentary politics. Schoolgirl debates therefore foreshadowed initiatives that promoted women's citizenship after partial suffrage was achieved in 1918, and they help to explain how the first women voters were assimilated easily into existing party and constitutional politics. This is a ‘Critical Reflection’ piece on the research seminar ‘China Plates and Japanned Trays: British Encounters with Chinese and Japanese Aesthetics in the Long Nineteenth Century’, which was held at the University of Warwick on 20 March 2017. The guest speaker was Dr Jenny Holt (Meiji University). In this seminar, we discussed how the British public responded to the increased availability of Chinese and Japanese art objects in the nineteenth century.

178. "Politics for Girls": Representations of Political Girlhood in the Girl's Own Paper and the Girl's Realm.

Abstract

Political girlhood was an important, but previously overlooked, feature of the fin de siècle girls' periodical press. In the Girl's Own Paper and the Girl's Realm, the "political girl" existed alongside other incarnations of the "new girl." Together with adult-authored informative and fiction pieces, correspondence pages and "how-to" columns encouraged girl readers' active engagement with empire and parliamentary politics. Youth gave preadolescent girls freedom to express their political and imperial identities through play. Uncovering examples that appear to jar with the dominant tone of these journals, this essay nuances assumptions that girls' periodical literature and lived experiences were necessarily apolitical. Abstract

Cerebellar Purkinje cells (PCs) show conspicuous damages in many ataxic disorders. Targeted delivery of short nucleic acids, such as antisense oligonucleotides, to PCs may be a potential treatment for ataxic disorders, especially spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs), which are mostly caused by a gain of toxic function of the mutant RNA or protein. However, oligonucleotides do not cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), necessitating direct delivery into the central nervous system (CNS) through intra-thecal, intra-cisternal, intra-cerebral ventricular, or stereotactic parenchymal administration. We have developed a novel liposome (100 to 200 nm in diameter) formulation, DCL64, composed of dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine, cholesterol, and poloxamer L64, which incorporates oligonucleotides efficiently (≥ 70%). Confocal microscopy showed that DCL64 was selectively taken up by brain microvascular endothelial cells by interacting with low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLr) family members on cell surface, but not with other types of lipid receptors such as caveolin or scavenger receptor class B type 1. LDLr family members are implicated in brain microvascular endothelial cell endocytosis/transcytosis, and are abundantly localized on cerebellar PCs. Intravenous administration of DCL64 in normal mice showed distribution of oligonucleotides to the brain, preferentially in PCs. Mice that received DCL64 showed no adverse effect on hematological, hepatic, and renal functions in blood tests, and no histopathological abnormalities in major organs. These studies suggest that DCL64 delivers oligonucleotides to PCs across the BBB via intravenous injection with no detectable adverse effects. This property potentially makes DCL64 particularly attractive as a delivery vehicle in treatments of SCAs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article discusses the extent to which middle-class Christians, many of whom were progressive liberals, involved themselves in the Moral Instruction League (MIL) to intervene in 'improving' the moral character of the English working class. It considers how they reconciled their motivations and underlying theology with secular goals that sought to free morality from its theological basis in late nineteenth-century England. It argues that Christian members and supporters of the MIL, in a series of steps, began to distance themselves from the theological basis of their faith. This was in an age when people were overwhelmingly persuaded that religion and morality were inseparable and that moral education must be religious education in schools. It was the Christian faith, not doubt, that was widely assumed in Victorian England at all social levels.
