Landschaft lässt sich – in Ableitung der Drei Welten Theorie von Karl Popper – in drei Landschaftsebenen gliedern: Sie ist Teil einer materiellen Welt, der bewusstseinsintern Elemente dieser Welt zu Landschaft 1 synthetisiert. Diese bewusstseinsinterne Landschaft wiederum wird aus den gesellschaftlichen Deutungs-, Bewertungs- und Kategorisierungsmustern zu Landschaft gespeist (Landschaft 3). Spiel (im Sinne von ‚play‘ und ‚game‘) hat dabei auch die Funktionen, die Inhalte von Landschaft 3 an Landschaft 2 zu vermitteln, gerade ‚game‘ eröffnet aber auch die Möglichkeit, kontingente Landschaftserfahrungen zu machen und zu kommunizieren. Die Entwicklung virtueller wie augmentierter Welten bedeutet zunächst grundsätzlich eine Erweiterung des Angebots an Kontingenzerfahrung. Gerade die Gestaltung von Spielen in der virtuellen Welt schränkt Kontingenzen jedoch durch Rückgriff auf soziale, kulturelle und landschaftliche Stereotype ein, wie am Fallbeispiel des Computerspiels ‚Civilization‘ deutlich wird. Der Aufsatz zeigt dabei Potenziale einer intensivierten wissenschaftlichen Befassung mit VR und AR für die individuelle und soziale Konstruktion von Landschaft auf. Landscape can be divided (referring to the three worlds theory of Karl Popper) into three levels: As a part of a material world, which becomes landscape 1 through the fact that elements of this world are synthesized within the consciousness. Morevoer, this landscape within the consciousness receives input from the social patterns of interpretation, evaluation and categorization to landscape (landscape 3). ‘Play’ and ‘game’ also have the function of communicating the contents of landscape 3 to landscape 2, but ‘game’ also opens up the possibility of making and communicating contingent landscape experiences. The development of virtual as well as augmented worlds includes an extension of providing a contingent experience. However, especially the design of games in the virtual world restricts contingencies by resorting to social, cultural and landscape stereotypes, as the example of the computer game ‘Civilization’ illustrates. The paper shows potentials of an intensified scientific engagement with VR and AR for the in dividual and social construction of landscape.

This paper explores tangible and intangible characteristics of places. It concentrates on gathering characteristics, emotions, memories and stories related to self-selected evocative places in a city. Evocative places are defined as places that evoke images, memories or emotions. There are two goals identified for this article. The first goal is to study which words citizens use to describe the main characteristics of their self-selected evocative places. The second goal is to map emotions associated with the self-selected evocative places. The case study selected in this research is the city of Vitória in Brazil. We collected 192 evocative places and their characteristics with the help of an online mapping platform that links an online questionnaire with an interactive map. This paper summarizes the main results gathered empirically about evocative places in Vitória, their characteristics and the emotions felt at these places. These places are then mapped in a geographic information system (GIS) in order to understand their locations and concentrations. On the basis of this empirical work in Vitória , and the work accomplished in the cities of Hamburg (Germany), Vienna (Austria), Ames and Grinnell (both Iowa, USA), we also designed and expanded the conceptual model of evocative places presented in this paper for the first time. The conceptual model includes four main categories with which an evocative place can be described including its physical characteristics, experiences, senses and values. We conclude the article with a discussion and further research directions.

Im Jahr 2007 wurde die 'Biosphäre Bliesgau' (Saarland) per Rechtsverordnung nach deutschem Recht eingerichtet und 2009 durch die UNESCO als Biosphärenreservat anerkannt, womit auf ein rund zehnjähriges Bestehen zurückgeblickt werden kann. Vor diesem Hintergrund befassen sich die Autoren mit der derzeitigen Einschätzung der Bevölkerung (Jahr 2016) zur Entwicklung des Biosphärenreservates als einer Modellregion für nachhaltige Entwicklung. Die hier präsentierten Ergebnisse einer quantitativen Onlinebefragung beleuchten unter anderem, was die Befragten am Bliesgau schätzen, was sie mit dem Biosphärenreservat verbinden und welche Angebote die Befragten nutzen, also wie die Menschen die regionale Entwicklung im Kontext der Biosphärenreservatausweisung einschätzen. Es zeigt sich, dass die Institution des Biosphärenreservates durch die Befragten insgesamt positiv bewertet wird. Diese Einschätzung bezieht sich (in noch stärkerem Maße) auf die Landschaft des Bliesgaus, die durch die Einrichtung des Biosphärenreservates geschützt und entwickelt werden soll. Knapp zusammengefasst bedeutet das Biosphärenreservat für die Befragten die gesteigerte Verfügbarkeit regionaler Produkte in Kombination mit Landschafts- und Naturschutz. In 2007 the ‘Biosphere Bliesgau‘ (Saarland) was established through an enactment in accordance with German law, and in 2009 the area was given UNESCO biosphere reserve status. The reserve thus looks back on ten years of existence. This is the context in which the authors investigate current public perceptions (in 2016) of the development of the biosphere reserve as a model region for sustainable development. The findings presented here are drawn from an online questionnaire and shed light on what those surveyed value about Bliesgau, what they associate with the biosphere reserve, what offerings they use, and thus how people assess the development of Bliesgau in the context of its designation as a biosphere reserve. It can be seen that the institution of the biosphere reserve is viewed overall positively by those questioned. This assessment applies (even more strongly) to the Bliesgau landscape, which should be protected and developed by the establishment of the biosphere reserve. Briefly summarised, for those surveyed the biosphere reserve represents increased availability of regional products in combination with landscape and nature protection.

Auch wenn die Energiewende in weiten Teilen der Bevölkerung große Zustimmung findet, rufen ihre physischen Manifestationen wie Photovoltaik- oder Windkraftanlagen immer wieder lokale Proteste hervor. Großschutzgebiete wie Biosphärenreservate und Naturparke stehen hier vor einer besonderen Herausforderung: Es besteht kein umfänglicher Konsens, ob erneuerbare Energien nun dem Naturschutz dienen oder eher schaden beziehungsweise inwieweit sie einen wichtigen Bestandteil nachhaltiger Regionalentwicklung darstellen. Im Beitrag werden zwei rheinland-pfälzische Naturparke mit und ohne Windkraftnutzung miteinander verglichen. Aus diskurstheoretischer Perspektive, basierend auf einer Zeitungs- und Websiteanalyse, wird beleuchtet, welche Muster in Bezug auf Windkraft und die Argumentation über den Status als Großschutzgebiet zentral verankert sind. Windkraftausbau innerhalb des Naturparks Soonwald-Nahe wird zwar teilweise als negativ bewertet, der Großschutzgebietsstatus jedoch nicht explizit als Ausschlussgrund angesehen. Der Naturpark wird vielmehr als schützens- und erhaltenswerte Referenzgröße gerahmt. Im Fallkontext Rhein-Westerwald erfolgt die Argumentation über den Großschutzgebietsstatus umfangreicher: Hier wird der Naturpark zu einer regionalen, emotionalen Bezugsgröße, dessen "Verschandelung" von den Gegnerinnen und Gegnern als moralisch verwerflich gedeutet wird. In beiden Fällen schließen sich in der Argumentation tendenziell Windkraft und Naturparke aus. Windenergie wird nicht als Potenzial der Regionalentwicklung assoziiert. Although the 'energy transition' is supported by a large proportion of the population, its physical manifestations in the form of photovoltaic installations or wind turbines repeatedly trigger local protests. Large-scale protected areas like biosphere reserves and nature parks face particular challenges in this context. There is no complete consensus about whether renewable energies benefit or harm nature conservation, or about the extent to which they represent an important element of 'sustainable regional development'. This paper compares two nature parks in Rheinland-Pfalz, one with wind turbines and one without. From the perspective of discourse theory, an analysis of newspapers and websites sheds light on centrally anchored discourse patterns related to wind power and arguments about the status of large-scale protected areas. The development of wind power within the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park is at times judged negatively but its status as a large-scale protected area is not explicitly seen to be grounds for exclusion. The nature park is rather framed as a unit of reference which is worthy of protection and conservation. In the context of the case study of Rhein-Westerwald argumentation about the status of large-scale protected areas is more extensive. The nature park is presented as a regional, emotional reference and its ‘disfigurement’ is construed by opponents as morally reprehensible. In both cases the lines of argument tend to rule out the combination of wind power and nature parks. Wind energy is not associated with regional development potential.

Im Zuge der Einrichtung von Großschutzgebieten in Deutschland wurden mit Nationalparken, Biosphärenreservaten und Naturparken Schutzgebietskategorien etabliert, die vom Grundsatz her unterschiedliche Hauptzielsetzungen aufweisen. In den letzten Jahren scheint es nun allerdings zu einer Überlappung von Aufgabenschwerpunkten zu kommen - insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund der vielfältig zu begreifenden Aufgabe der Regionalentwicklung. Mit einem Schwerpunkt auf den Ländern Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz und Saarland rücken aktuelle Fragestellungen im Schnittfeld von Großschutzgebieten und Regionalentwicklung in den Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung. Innerhalb des Einführungsbeitrags wird zunächst ein kurzer Überblick über die drei Großschutzgebietskategorien Naturparke, Nationalparke und Biosphärenreservate sowie das mögliche Aufgabenverständnis von Regionalentwicklung gegeben. Anschließend werden zentrale Ergebnisse der weiteren Artikel dargestellt und zusammenfassend eingeordnet - entsprechend dem Zugang: Wohin des Weges? Regionalentwicklung in Großschutzgebieten.
