The effect of variation in open area ratio (β) in a multi-V rib roughened Single-Pass Solar Air Heater (SPSAH) is analyzed in this work. Fixing values of other parameters, such as open area ratio (β) and relative roughness width (W/w), were studied with a certain range of Reynolds number (Re) ranging from 2000 to 18000. The improvement in Nusselt number ratio (Nu/Nus) and thermo-hydraulic performance (THPP) and the decline in duct friction ratio (f/fs) support the application of perforation. The empirical correlations of Nu and f are also generated with ±12% and ±7.5% accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Pediatric sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a rare otological emergency. With the emergence of the Coronavirus 19 pandemic, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are among the essential household items. Many hand sanitizers are frequently coupled with scents that young children may find pleasant. Case Report: A 5-year-old girl presented to our clinic with hearing loss after the consumption of alcohol-based hand sanitizer. A pure tone audiogram showed bilateral SSNHL. The child was prescribed systemic corticosteroids resulted in a slight improvement in hearing thresholds. The child was followed up at 6 and 18 months showing no further improvement in hearing thresholds. Conclusion: Although various infective, vascular, and immune responses have been proposed, alcohol-based hand sanitizer consumption has not been reported to present with SSNHL to the best of our knowledge. In the current scenario of the Coronavirus pandemic, otorhinolaryngologists must keep in mind that SSNHL may occur as a result of hazardous alcohol-based hand disinfectant consumption. Introduction: Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) is a sight-threatening condition characterized by the infarction of the optic nerve head. It is a major cause of acute visual loss, particularly in individuals over the age of 50. The exact incidence and prevalence of AION vary across populations due to differences in study methodologies and diagnostic criteria. However, AION is generally considered a relatively rare condition. The incidence has been estimated to range from 2 to 10 cases per 100,000 population per year, with the prevalence estimated at approximately 3 to 10 cases per 100,000 population (1,2). This study aims to provide an overview of the epidemiology of AION, including its incidence, risk factors, and associated comorbidities, to better understand the burden and implications of this condition. Materials and Methods: This prospective observational study was carried out in the Department of Ophthalmology, S.S. Medical College and associated GM Hospital, Rewa, over a period of 18 months among 31 consented patients presenting to the department with features suggestive of AION. Detailed history was recorded and thorough clinical and ophthalmic examination was carried out. Data was collected, compiled and analysed using SPSS 22.0 (trial version). Results were expressed as the means and standard deviation or as numbers and percentages, wherever required. Result:Mean age of patients was 53.34±9.10 years. Male preponderance (54.84%) was observed. Right eye (61.29%) was affected more than left eye. All patients presented with diminution of vision. Only 9.68% experienced jaw claudication, scalp tenderness and headache. History of similar complaints in the fellow eye was given by 29.03%. 78.12% presented within 10 days of onset of symptoms. The most common systemic disease associated with AION was diabetes mellitus (64.52%)followed by hypertension (48.39%). NAION patients had higher incidence of OSA. No patient had history of IHD, TIA or stroke. Mean VA in affected eye was 1.36±0.74 log MAR units. Colour vision of AION patient was defective in almost all patients where it was documentable. Mean number of Ishihara plates read was 5.41±1.55. Mean contrast sensitivity was 0.67±0.43 log units. 67.74% presented with grade 3 RAPD followed by grade 4(16.13%). The most common type of disc oedema was diffuse, and these had poor VA at presentation. Disc at risk was found in 38.71% patients. Fellow eye had a pale disc in 29.03%. Inferonasal field defect was the most common (25.81%) followed by superior altitudinal defect (19.35%). Peripapillary RNFL thickness, average as well as in all quadrants was found to be increased. Conclusion: The data for AION comes mainly from western literature as there have been only few studies in Indian population. A detailed study on Solar Air Heaters (SAHs) with single-pass roughening with plastic net perforated multi-V and continuous multi-V ribs was investigated and compared for its effectiveness. Improvements in the Nusselt number ratio (Nu/Nus) and the friction factor ratio (f/fs) studied with the Reynolds number (Re) ranged from 2000–18000 for a relative roughness height (e/Dh) of 0.043, a relative roughness pitch (P/e) of 10, an aspect ratio (W/H) of 12, and an angle of attack (α) of 60°, maintaining a similar flow scenario. For a syntactically roughened channel with a perforated multi-V rib, the significant enhancement was recorded in thermo-hydraulic performance with a slight decrease in pumping power. Objective There is dearth of data regarding the outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among rheumatic and musculoskeletal disease (RMD) patients from Southeast Asia. We report the clinicodemographic profile and identify predictors of COVID-19 outcomes in a large cohort of Indian RMD patients. Methods This prospective cohort study, carried out at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh (a tertiary care centre in India), included RMD patients affected with COVID-19 between April 2020 and October 2021. Demographic and clinical and laboratory details of COVID-19 and underlying RMD were noted. Predictors of mortality, hospitalization and severe COVID-19 were identified using stepwise multivariable logistic regression. Results A total of 64 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2-infected RMD patients [age 41.5 (19–85) years; 46 (72%) females] were included. Eighteen (28%) patients had severe COVID-19. Twenty-three (36%) required respiratory support [11 (17%) required mechanical ventilation]. Thirty-six (56%) patients required hospitalization [median duration of stay 10 (1–42) days]; 17 (27%) required intensive care unit admission. Presence of co-morbidities [odds ratio (OR) = 4.5 (95% CI: 1.4, 14.7)] was found to be an independent predictor of COVID-19 severity. Co-morbidities [OR = 10.7 (95% CI: 2.5, 45.4)] and underlying lupus [OR = 7.0 (95% CI: 1.2, 40.8)] were independently associated with COVID-19 hospitalization. Ongoing rheumatic disease activity [OR = 6.8 (95% CI: 1.3, 35.4)] and underlying diagnosis of lupus [OR = 7.1 (95% CI: 1.2, 42.4)] and SSc [OR = 9.5 (95% CI: 1.5, 61.8)] were found to be strong independent predictors of mortality. Age, sex, underlying RMD-associated interstitial lung disease and choice of immunosuppressive therapy were not associated with COVID-19 severity or adverse outcomes. Conclusion The presence of co-morbidities was independently associated with COVID-19 severity and hospitalization. Ongoing rheumatic disease activity and the presence of lupus or SSc independently predicted mortality. Age, sex, type of immunosuppressive therapy and presence of RMD-associated interstitial lung disease did not affect COVID-19 severity or outcomes in Indian RMD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
