153. Characterization of fractional-quantum-Hall-effect quasiparticles

Composite fermions in a partially filled quasi-Landau level may be viewed as quasielectrons of the underlying fractional quantum Hall state, suggesting that a quasielectron is simply a dressed electron, as often is true in other interacting electron systems, and as a result has the same intrinsic charge and exchange statistics as an electron. This paper discusses how this result is reconciled with the earlier picture in which quasiparticles are viewed as fractionally-charged fractional-statistics ``solitons". While the two approaches provide the same answers for the long-range interactions between the quasiparticles, the dressed-electron description is more conventional and unifies the view of quasiparticle dynamics in and beyond the fractional quantum Hall regime., Comment: 11 pages, latex, no figures

154. Excitation Spectrum and Collective Modes of Composite Fermions

According to the composite fermion theory, the interacting electron system at filling factor $\nu$ is equivalent to the non-interacting composite fermion system at $\nu^*=\nu/(1-2m\nu)$, which in turn is related to the non-interacting electron system at $\nu^*$. We show that several eigenstates of non-interacting electrons at $\nu^*$ do not have any partners for interacting electrons at $\nu$, but, upon composite fermion transformation, these states are eliminated, and the remaining states provide a good description of the spectrum at $\nu$. We also show that the collective mode branches of incompressible states are well described as the collective modes of composite fermions. Our results suggest that, at small wave vectors, there is a single well defined collective mode for all fractional quantum Hall states. 156. Fractional quantum Hall effect in higher Landau levels

We investigate, using finite size numerical calculations, the spin-polarized fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the first excited Landau level (LL). We find evidence for the existence of an incompressible state at $\nu = \frac{7}{3} = 2+\frac{1}{3}$, but not at $\nu = 2+\frac{2}{5}$. Surprisingly, the 7/3 state is found to be strongest at a finite thickness. The structure of the low- lying excited states is found to be markedly different from that in the lowest LL. This study also rules out FQHE at a large number of odd-denominator fractions in the lowest LL., Comment: 7 pages RevTex, 4 figures

We show that the excitation spectrum of interacting electrons at filling factor $\nu=\nu^*/(2\nu^*+1)$ is well described in terms of non-interacting composite fermions at filling factor $\nu^*$, but does not have a one-to-one correspondence with the excitation spectrum of non-interacting electrons at $\nu^*$. In particular, the collective modes of the fractional quantum Hall states are not analogous to those of the integer quantum Hall states. We consider the ``fractional quantum Hall atom" in the vanishing Zeeman energy limit, and investigate the validity of Hund's maximum-spin rule for interacting electrons in various Landau levels. We provide numerical evidence that the ground state of a short range interaction model at $\nu=1/2$ is incompressible and spin-singlet for a wide range of repulsive interactions. Furthermore it is accurately described by a trial wave function studied earlier. The eigenstates of interacting electrons in the fractional quantum Hall phase typically form fairly well defined bands in the energy space. We show that the composite fermion theory gives insight into the origin of these bands and provides an accurate and complete microscopic description of the strongly correlated many-body states in the low-energy bands. Thus, somewhat like in Landau's fermi liquid theory, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the low energy Hilbert space of strongly interacting electrons in the fractinal quantum Hall regime and that of weakly interacting electrons in the integer quantum Hall regime., Comment: 10 pages

- Abstract
We present the results for CAPRI Round 54, the 5th joint CASP-CAPRI protein assembly prediction challenge. The Round offered 37 targets, including 14 homo-dimers, 3 homo-trimers, 13 hetero-dimers including 3 antibody-antigen complexes, and 7 large assemblies. On average ~70 CASP and CAPRI predictor groups, including more than 20 automatics servers, submitted models for each target. A total of 21941 models submitted by these groups and by 15 CAPRI scorer groups were evaluated using the CAPRI model quality measures and the DockQ score consolidating these measures. The prediction performance was quantified by a weighted score based on the number of models of acceptable quality or higher submitted by each group among their 5 best models. Results show substantial progress achieved across a significant fraction of the 60+ participating groups. High-quality models were produced for about 40% for the targets compared to 8% two years earlier, a remarkable improvement resulting from the wide use of the AlphaFold2 and AlphaFold-Multimer software. Creative use was made of the deep learning inference engines affording the sampling of a much larger number of models and enriching the multiple sequence alignments with sequences from various sources. Wide use was also made of the AlphaFold confidence metrics to rank models, permitting top performing groups to exceed the results of the public AlphaFold-Multimer version used as a yard stick. This notwithstanding, performance remained poor for complexes with antibodies and nanobodies, where evolutionary relationships between the binding partners are lacking, and for complexes featuring conformational flexibility, clearly indicating that the prediction of protein complexes remains a challenging problem.

One of the approaches to engineering topological superconductivity in a two dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit coupling is to proximity-couple it to an s-wave type-II superconductor with a non-standard Abrikosov flux lattice that is neither triangular or square but has an even number of superconducting flux quanta per unit cell. Here we ask whether exposing an intrinsic two-dimensional superconductor with spin orbit coupling to a perpendicular magnetic field -- an intrinsic quantum Hall superconductor -- can give rise to topological superconductivity. We investigate this question in a mean-field theory and obtain, in a self-consistent fashion, the real space configuration of the superconducting order parameter, which encodes information about the topology of the superconductivity as well as the nature of the Abrikosov lattice. We find small regions of topological superconductivity in the parameter space, which can be greatly enlarged by the addition of a superlattice potential. Topological superconductivity is seen to be correlated with the presence of either a distorted Abrikosov lattice or an Abrikosov lattice of giant vortices which carry two superconducting flux quanta. To identify the lowest energy solution, it is essential to employ helical order parameters. Finally, we discuss the experimental feasibility of this proposal.

A measurement of the inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at √s = 13 TeV is presented. The double-differential cross sections are measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum pT and the absolute jet rapidity |y|. The anti-kT clustering algorithm is used with distance parameter of 0.4 (0.7) in a phase space region with jet pT from 97 GeV up to 3.1 TeV and |y| < 2.0. Data collected with the CMS detector are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb−1 (33.5 fb−1). The measurement is used in a comprehensive QCD analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order, which results in significant improvement in the accuracy of the parton distributions in the proton. Simultaneously, the value of the strong coupling constant at the Z boson mass is extracted as αS(mZ) = 0.1170±0.0019. The first evidence for X(3872) production in relativistic heavy ion collisions is reported. The X(3872) production is studied in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair, using the decay chain X(3872) -> J/psi pi(+)pi(-) -> mu(+) mu(-) pi(+)pi(-). The data were recorded with the CMS detector in 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb(-1). The measurement is performed in the rapidity and transverse momentum ranges vertical bar y vertical bar < 1.6 and 15 < p(T) < 50 GeV/c. The significance of the inclusive X(3872) signal is 4.2 standard deviations. The prompt X(3872) to psi 2S yield ratio is found to be rho(Pb-Pb) = 1.08 +/- 0.49(stat) +/- 0.52(syst), to be compared with typical values of 0.1 for pp collisions. This result provides a unique experimental input to theoretical models of the X(3872) production mechanism, and of the nature of this exotic state.

- Abstract
Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) improve overall survival (OS) in patients with locally advanced, unresectable, or metastatic urothelial carcinoma (aUC), but response rates can be modest. We compared outcomes between patients with and without prior intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), who received ICI for aUC, hypothesizing that prior intravesical BCG would be associated with worse outcomes. Patients and Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study across 25 institutions in US and Europe. We compared observed response rate (ORR) using logistic regression; progression-free survival (PFS) and OS using Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards. Analyses were stratified by treatment line (first line/salvage) and included multivariable models adjusting for known prognostic factors. Results: A total of 1026 patients with aUC were identified; 614, 617, and 638 were included in ORR, OS, PFS analyses, respectively. Overall, 150 pts had history of prior intravesical BCG treatment. ORR to ICI was similar between those with and without prior intravesical BCG exposure in both first line and salvage settings (adjusted odds radios 0.55 [P= .08] and 1.65 [P= .12]). OS (adjusted hazard ratios 1.05 [P= .79] and 1.13 [P= .49]) and PFS (adjusted hazard ratios 1.12 [P= .55] and 0.87 [P= .39]) were similar between those with and without intravesical BCG exposure in first line and salvage settings. Conclusion: Prior intravesical BCG was not associated with differences in response and survival in patients with aUC treated with ICI. Limitations include retrospective nature, lack of randomization, presence of selection and confounding biases. This study provides important preliminary data that prior intravesical BCG exposure may not impact ICI efficacy in aUC. © 2021
