158. Associations between alcohol use and sex-specific maturation of subcortical gray matter morphometry from adolescence to adulthood: Replication across two longitudinal samples.

Abstract

Subcortical brain morphometry matures across adolescence and young adulthood, a time when many youth engage in escalating levels of alcohol use. Initial cross-sectional studies have shown alcohol use is associated with altered subcortical morphometry. However, longitudinal evidence of sex-specific neuromaturation and associations with alcohol use remains limited. This project used generalized additive mixed models to examine sex-specific development of subcortical volumes and associations with recent alcohol use, using 7 longitudinal waves (n = 804, 51% female, ages 12-21 at baseline) from the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA). A second, independent, longitudinal dataset, with up to four waves of data (n = 467, 43% female, ages 10-18 at baseline), was used to assess replicability. Significant, replicable non-linear normative volumetric changes with age were evident in the caudate, putamen, thalamus, pallidum, amygdala and hippocampus. Significant, replicable negative associations between subcortical volume and alcohol use were found in the hippocampus in all youth, and the caudate and thalamus in female but not male youth, with significant interactions present in the caudate, thalamus and putamen. Findings suggest a structural vulnerability to alcohol use, or a predisposition to drink alcohol based on brain structure, with female youth potentially showing heightened risk, compared to male youth.

Abstract

Ocean Sampling Day was initiated by the EU-funded Micro B3 (Marine Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology) project to obtain a snapshot of the marine microbial biodiversity and function of the world's oceans. It is a simultaneous global mega-sequencing campaign aiming to generate the largest standardized microbial data set in a single day. This will be achievable only through the coordinated efforts of an Ocean Sampling Day Consortium, supportive partnerships and networks between sites. This commentary outlines the establishment, function and aims of the Consortium and describes our vision for a sustainable study of marine microbial communities and their embedded functional traits.

173. Non-Zeeman Circular Polarization of Molecular Rotational Spectral Lines

Abstract

We present measurements of circular polarization from rotational spectral lines of molecular species in Orion KL, most notably 12CO (J=2 - 1), obtained at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory with the Four-Stokes-Parameter Spectra Line Polarimeter. We find levels of polarization of up to 1 to 2% in general, for 12CO (J=2 - 1) this level is comparable to that of linear polarization also measured for that line. We present a physical model based on resonant scattering in an attempt to explain our observations. We discuss how slight differences in scattering amplitudes for radiation polarized parallel and perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field, responsible for the alignment of the scattering molecules, can lead to the observed circular polarization. We also show that the effect is proportional to the square of the magnitude of the plane of the sky component of the magnetic field, and therefore opens up the possibility of measuring this parameter from circular polarization measurements of Zeeman insensitive molecules., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in the ApJ

Abstract

The Census of High- and Medium-mass Protostars (CHaMP) is the first large-scale, unbiased, uniform mapping survey at sub-parsec scale resolution of 90 GHz line emission from massive molecular clumps in the Milky Way. We present the first Mopra (ATNF) maps of the CHaMP survey region (300{\deg}>l>280{\deg}) in the HCO+ J=1-0 line, which is usually thought to trace gas at densities up to 10^11 m-3. In this paper we introduce the survey and its strategy, describe the observational and data reduction procedures, and give a complete catalogue of moment maps of the HCO+ J=1-0 emission from the ensemble of 301 massive molecular clumps. From these maps we also derive the physical parameters of the clumps, using standard molecular spectral-line analysis techniques. This analysis yields the following range of properties: integrated line intensity 1-30 K km s-1, peak line brightness 1-7 K, linewidth 1-10 km s-1, integrated line luminosity 0.5-200 K km s-1 pc^2, FWHM size 0.2-2.5 pc, mean projected axial ratio 2, optical depth 0.08-2, total surface density 30-3000 M{\sun} pc-2, number density 0.2-30 x 10^9 m-3, mass 15-8000 M{\sun}, virial parameter 1-55, and total gas pressure 0.3-700 pPa. We find that the CHaMP clumps do not obey a Larson-type size-linewidth relation. Among the clumps, there exists a large population of subthermally excited, weakly-emitting (but easily detectable) dense molecular clumps, confirming the prediction of Narayanan et al. (2008). These weakly-emitting clumps comprise 95% of all massive clumps by number, and 87% of the molecular mass, in this portion of the Galaxy; their properties are distinct from the brighter massive star-forming regions that are more typically studied. Abstract

Automation and artificial intelligence (AI) is already possible for many radiation therapy planning and treatment processes with the aim of improving workflows and increasing efficiency in radiation oncology departments. Currently, AI technology is advancing at an exponential rate, as are its applications in radiation oncology. This commentary highlights the way AI has begun to impact radiation therapy treatment planning and looks ahead to potential future developments in this space. Historically, radiation therapist's (RT's) role has evolved alongside the adoption of new technology. In Australia, RTs have key clinical roles in both planning and treatment delivery and have been integral in the implementation of automated solutions for both areas. They will need to continue to be informed, to adapt and to transform with AI technologies implemented into clinical practice in radiation oncology departments. RTs will play an important role in how AI‐based automation is implemented into practice in Australia, ensuring its application can truly enable personalised and higher‐quality treatment for patients. To inform and optimise utilisation of AI, research should not only focus on clinical outcomes but also AI's impact on professional roles, responsibilities and service delivery. Increased efficiencies in the radiation therapy workflow and workforce need to maintain safe improvements in practice and should not come at the cost of creativity, innovation, oversight and safety. 180. Supporting face familiarization using perceptual and engineering frameworks

Abstract

The identification of unfamiliar faces is known to be inferior to the recognition of faces with which we are familiar. This can lead to undesirable consequences such as misidentification. However, there is some evidence to suggest that a brief period of familiarisation can dramatically improve our ability to recognise an unfamiliar individual. Chapter 1 outlines the previous research that has aimed to understand the mechanisms of face processing, and to improve the recognition of unfamiliar faces. Three areas that require further investigation are identified and the experimental work reported in the three empirical chapters addresses these issues. Chapter 2 reports five experiments, using photographs of faces as stimuli, which examined whether a short training exposure promoting stimulus comparison can facilitate recognition of unfamiliar faces (c.f. Dwyer & Vladeanu, 2009). The results revealed that, contrary to expectation, any beneficial effects of comparison do not extend to improving discrimination between targets and nonexposed stimuli. The results of Chapter 2 required a return to the mechanisms of perceptual learning thought to underpin the comparison effect. Numerous attempts to unpack this process have relied on experiments that have examined the content, but not the location, of the unique features of a stimulus (e.g., Hall, 2003; Mitchell, Nash, & Hall, 2008; Mundy, Honey, & Dwyer, 2007). Chapter 3 used checkerboards as stimuli, manipulating the placement of the unique feature, as a way of breaking the perfect correlation between content and location and assess their relative contributions to perceptual learning. The findings indicated that discrimination between similar stimuli on the basis of exposure can be explained entirely by learning where to look, with no independent effect of learning about particular stimulus features. 11 Chapter 4 returned to the issue of potential methods to improve recognition, and examined the possibility that training using synthesised faces created from a single view and presented at multiple yaw rotations can aid face recognition (Liu, Chai, Shan, Honma, & Osada, 2009). The findings of three experiments; strengthen the claim that identifying an individual can be improved using multiple synthesised views generated from a single front view of a face, and suggest that this improvement may be affected by the quality of synthesised material. In summary, while the results reported within this thesis indicate that comparison between similar faces does not produce an effective way of supporting the recognition of unfamiliar faces, they do indicate that experience with a face and/or artificial faces may be a practical means of facilitating identification.

Abstract

Poly(p-dioxanone) (PDO), a versatile poly(ester-ether), has been used for a variety of biomedical applications. Functional performance of this semicrystalline polymer heavily relies on its crystallinity and crystalline behavior. Upon extended exposure to heat above the glass transition temperature and below the melting temperature, PDO undergoes thermal annealing. Isothermal studies at elevated temperatures utilizing a differential scanning calorimeter were performed in order to determine the most appropriate conditions to anneal the polymer. Of the investigated mechanical properties, yield strength and elastic modulus were significantly improved with annealing. This improvement over nonannealed samples was also observed with samples subjected to phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution at 37[degrees]C for 2 weeks. After 1 month continuous immersion in PBS solution, the PDO became brittle with deteriorated elongation at break but maintained yield strength and modulus. At 2 months, all specimens exhibited cracks on the surface and a complete loss of mechanical strength. 190. Servants of the Republic : patrician lawyers in Quattrocento Venice

Abstract

Lawyers have widely been recognized as playing a role in the transition from the medieval to the modem state. Their presence in Renaissance Venetian politics, however, remains largely unexplored. Relying primarily on a prosopographical analysis, the thesis explores the various roles played by lawyers, dividing those roles into three main categories: diplomats, territorial governors, and domestic legislators. What emerges is a clear pattern of significant involvement by legally trained patricians in the Venetian political system. Noble lawyers were most often ambassadors, serving in many of the principal courts inside and outside of Italy as Venice was extending her influence on the Italian peninsula. They also served as administrators of Venetian rule throughout the Venetian terraferma (mainland) state. Lastly, their domestic political officeholding further confirms their continuing participation, as they held many of the most important domestic offices throughout the Quattrocento. The thesis ends with short biographies of each of the nearly three-dozen lawyers who make up this study, as well as chronologies of the offices they held. These chronologies include archival references for each office.
