Abstract: We report a measurement of the ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\overline{p}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ process with the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the PEP ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ storage ring at SLAC. Forty-five $p\overline{p}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ events were identified in data corresponding to an integrated ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ luminosity of 142 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. The cross section for $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p\overline{p}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ is given both as a function of the $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ center-of-mass energy ${W}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$, with ${W}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ between 2.5 and 5.5 GeV, and as a function of the in variant mass squared ${q}^{2}$ of one of the photons, with $\ensuremath{-}{q}^{2}l7$ Ge${\mathrm{V}}^{2}$. This cross section falls much less rapidly with ${W}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ than does the cross section for a similar process, $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p\overline{p}$. No ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{0}{\overline{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}^{0}$ production is observed, and only a small fraction of the events at low ${W}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ is consistent with $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{++}{\overline{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{-}}$, ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{++}\overline{p}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, or ${\overline{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{-}}p{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$. In an expanded search through the same data, four events compatible with either $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\overline{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}(\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ or ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{0}\overline{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}({\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\gamma})$ production were found.

Abstract: The inclusive production cross section of ..lambda.., anti ..lambda.. in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at a c.m. energy of 29 GeV has been measured with the time-projection-chamber detector at PEP. The average lambda, anti lambda multiplicity has been measured to be 0.197 +/- 0.012 (stat.) +/- 0.017 (syst.). ..lambda..-anti..lambda.. pairs have been observed in jets for the first time, and the average number of ..lambda..-anti..lambda.. pairs per event has been measured to be 0.042 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.014. 8 references, 3 figures.

Abstract: The distribution of particles in three-jet events is compared with the predictions of three fragmentation models currently in use: the Lund string model, the Webber cluster model, and an independent fragmentation model. The Lund model and, to a certain extent, the Webber model provide reasonable descriptions of the data. The independent fragmentation model does not describe the distribution of particles at large angles with respect to the jet axes. The results provide evidence that the sources of hadrons are Lorentz boosted with respect to the overall c.m.

Abstract: A Geiger-mode electromagnetic shower calorimeter has been constructed for PEP-4. Six trapezoidal modules cover 75% of 4 π solid angle in a hexagonal array. Each module contains 40 sense wire planes between 0.25 radiation-length thick lead-laminates, and is divided electrically into submodules of 27 and 13 layers. Half-degree wide hodoscopic channels in projective geometry provide excellent spatial resolution. In each gap three stereo views using the sense wires as well as strips on both cathodes at ±60° to the wires provide good shower reconstruction capabilities in multi-track jet events. Calibration and data analysis procedures are outlined. The performance of the calorimeter in the measurement of Bhabha events and the reconstruction of π 0 's in jet events is in excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. The π 0 mass resolution is MeV (rms).

Abstract: The spatial resolution and response of the segmented cathode pads of the PEP-4 TPC have been measured with data taken at 8.5 atmospheres of 80% Argon-20% Methane gas with a 4kG magnetic field. The dependence of the spatial resolution and pad response on drift distance and track-anode crossing angle is presented.

Abstract: Three currently used fragmentation models are tested by studying the distribution of particles between jet axes in the 3-jet events ofe+e− annihilation, using data collected by the Time Projection Chamber at PEP. These three models — the Lund String model, the Webber Cluster model and an Independent Fragmentation model (IF) — each implement different Lorentz-frame structures for the fragmentation process of quarks and gluons into hadrons. The Lund model provides a good description of the data, while the IF model does not. The Webber model, which is untuned, does not describe the absolute particle densities between jets, but correctly predicts the ratios of those densities, which are less sensitive to the tuning.

Abstract: Production rates of multijet hadronic final states are studied ine + e − annihilation at 29 GeV center of mass energy. QCD shower model calculations with exact first order matrix element weighting at the first gluon vertex are capable of reproducing the observed multijet event rates over a large range of jet pair masses. The method used to reconstruct jets is well suited for directly comparing experimental jet rates with parton rates calculated in perturbative QCD. Evidence for the energy dependene of α s is obtained by comparing the observed production rates of 3-jet events with results of similar studies performed at higher center of mass energies.

Abstract: Proton production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV has been studied with the time projection chamber. Measurements of the dependence of proton fractions on momentum, transverse momentum with respect to the jet axis, hadron multiplicity, and event sphericity are reported. Our results are consistent with the assumption that primary baryons and mesons have similar production spectra, and indicate that protons provide more direct probes of underlying fragmentation phenomena than do pions.

Abstract: We use the time-projection chamber detector to study mechanisms of baryon production in the central rapidity region of jets from e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation. On the basis of angular correlations between protons and antiprotons, we exclude the isotropic decay of heavy mesonic clusters as a dominant source of baryons at 95% confidence level. The diquark mechanisms used in string fragmentation models reproduce the data, provided that diquarks are formed in a two-step process which allows mesons to be produced in between the baryon and antibaryon.

Abstract: We use data from the Mark II experiment at PEP to search for the process B→h 0 X for m h 0 between 50 and 210 MeV/ c 2 . No evidence for the Higgs boson is seen in this mass range. The limit obtained rules out the standard Higgs boson for masses between 70 and 210 MeV/ c 2 and significantly constrains extensions of the Higgs sector.

Abstract: Using the data accumulated at LEP in 1989 and 1990 with the ALEPH detector, the inclusive and exclusive branching ratios of the τ lepton have been measured assuming lepton universality inZ0 decays. The inclusive branching fractions for the τ decay into one, three, and five charged particles have been determined to be (85.45±0.97)%, (14.35±0.48)%, and (0.10±0.05)%, respectively, in agreement with the world averages. New undetected decay modes are determined to have a branching fraction of less than 2.1% at 95% CL. The measured branching ratios for quasi-exclusive channels are slightly larger than, but consistent with the world averages, except for the modes τ→3 hadrons+v τ andτ→hadron+2π0v τ , which are significantly larger. These latter branching ratios have been found to be (9.5±0.7)% and (10.2±1.1)%, respectively. The sum of all the measured quasi-exclusive branching ratios is (100.4±1.8)%. A fully exclusive analysis of modes with neutral pions shows no evidence for new photonic decay modes with a branching fraction limit of 3.4% at 95% CL.

Abstract: We have studied the energy-energy correlation in e+e- annihilation into hadrons at s =29 GeV using the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. We find to O(s2) that s=0.1580.0030.008 if hadronization is described by string fragmentation. Independent fragmentation schemes give s=0.100.14, and give poor agreement with the data. A leading-log shower fragmentation model is found to describe the data well. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Inclusive production cross sections for photons and π0's ine + e − annihilation at a center of mass energy of 29 GeV have been measured. The π0 production spectrum agrees with a corresponding measurement for π±. The ratio of the π0 inclusive rate to the average for π± is 0.92±0.14. The fractions of the total energy carried by photons and π0's are 0.244±0.016 and 0.217±0.033, respectively. The fraction of total energy carried by all stable hadrons, prompt leptons and photons is determined to be 0.938±0.045, leaving 0.062±0.045 for neutrinos.

Abstract: Two-photon production of ${K}_{S}^{0}{K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{\mp}}$ states has been studied by the TPC/Two-Gamma experiment at the SLAC storage ring PEP. A resonance of mass 1.42 GeV was seen when one of the photons was quite virtual but not when both photons were nearly real. Production of a spin-1 meson, which cannot be made by two real photons, would fit these observations. The ${Q}^{2}$ dependence of the data in the resonance region agrees with this spin assignment and is incompatible with a spin-0 hypothesis. The mass and width of the resonance are similar to those of the $E$ meson, which has been assigned ${J}^{P}={0}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${J}^{P}={1}^{+}$ by different experiments.

Abstract: Multihadronic e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation events at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV have been studied with both the original (PEP 5) Mark II and the upgraded Mark II detectors. Detector-corrected distributions from global shape analyses such as aplanarity, Q/sub 2/-Q/sub 1/, sphericity, thrust, minor value, oblateness, and jet masses, and inclusive charged-particle distributions including x, rapidity, p/sub perpendicular/, and particle flow are presented. These distributions are compared with predictions from various multihadron event models which use leading-logarithmic shower evolution or QCD matrix elements at the parton level and string or cluster fragmentation for hadronization. The new generation of parton-shower models gives, on the average, a better description of the data than the previous parton-shower models. The energy behavior of these models is compared to existing e/sup +/e/sup -/ data. The predictions of the models at a center-of-mass energy of 93 GeV, roughly the expected mass of the Z/sup 0/, are also presented.

Abstract: Two large-aperture, 10-cell atmospheric-pressure isobutane Cherenkov counters were designed and constructed for a SLAC streamer-chamber experiment. The rejection efficiencies for a 9 GeV/cπ− were measured to be 99.84% ⋍ 0.006% and 99.717% ± 0.008% for the two counters. The design details and performance characteristics are discussed.

Abstract: We present here some results obtained with the LBL Time Projection Chamber (TPC) regarding the particle identification by the measurement of the ionization losses in the relativistic rise region. This includes the method of calibration using 55Fe sources, the measurement of the resolution using cosmic rays, which shows an equivalent K-? separation of 4.8 standard deviations at 3.5 GeV/c, and the preliminary results obtained with multihadronic events from e+e- annihilations.

Abstract: Evidence is presented that the production of phi/sup 0/ mesons in ..pi../sup +/p interactions at 16 GeV/c is dominated by conjoint mechanisms, i.e., phi/sup 0/ mesons are accompanied by additional strange particles. For x>0.5, the cross sections for conjoint production of phi/sup 0/ mesons are 0.37 +- 0.16 ..mu..b with a ..lambda../sup 0/ hyperon and 0.33 +- 0.15 ..mu..b with a K/sub S//sup 0/ meson. Assuming equal probability for each conjoint final state, the total conjoint production cross section is inferred to be 1.05 +- 0.33 ..mu..b. This is to be compared with the inclusive phi/sup 0/-meson production cross section of 1.3 +- 2.0 ..mu..b in the same kinematic region. The data suggest that conjoint mechanisms are responsible for 81% of the phi/sup 0/ production with a lower limit of 24% at the 94% confidence level.

Abstract: We have measured the mass of the Z boson to be 91.14±0.12 GeV/c^2, and its width to be 2.42-0.35+0.45 GeV. If we constrain the visible width to its standard-model value, we find the partial width to invisible decay modes to be 0.46±0.10 GeV, corresponding to 2.8±0.6 neutrino species, with a 95%-confidence-level upper limit of 3.9.

Abstract: By observing the reaction ..gamma gamma -->..K-italic/sub s-italic//sup 0/K/sup +-/..pi../sup minus-or-plus/, the TPC/Two-Gamma experiment at the SLAC e-italic/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring PEP has obtained a 95%-confidence-level limit of GAMMA/sub iota//sub ..-->..//sub ..gamma..//sub ..gamma../B(iota..-->..KK-bar..pi..) ..//sub ..gamma..//sub ..gamma../ limit appears to conflict with previous assignments of an observed rho..gamma.. decay to iota and also with many analyses of eta-eta'-iota mixing. The contrast of this small ..gamma gamma.. width with the large rate for J-italic/psi..--> gamma..iota is evidence that the iota is a glueball with little admixture of q-italicq-bar states.

Abstract: Data from the Time Projection Chamber at the SLAC storage ring PEP have been used to study the inclusive production of charged hadrons. Particles were identified by simultaneous dE/dx and momentum measurements. Cross sections and particle fractions for pi +/-, k+/-, and p(anti-p) are given as a function of several variables. Predictions of various hadronization models are compared to the data. A comparison is made with other fragmentation processes.

Abstract: We have measured the inclusive prompt electron cross section over a wide momentum range (P>0.5 GeV/c) with the PEP-4 TPC detector. The semielectronic branching fractions of thec andb quarks are (9.1±0.9 (stat.)±1.3 (syst.))% and (11.0±1.8±1.0)%, respectively. Theb quark fragmentation function peaks at highz with 〈zb〉=0.74±0.05±0.03. The axial couplings to the neutral current areac=2.3±1.4±1.0 for thec quark andab=−2.0±1.9±0.5 for theb quark.

Abstract: The inclusive process ..pi../sup +/+P..-->..K /sup asterisk0/(890)+X is studied at 16 GeV/c using a 2-m streamer chamber containing a central liquid hydrogen target. From photographs triggered by detection of a forward K/sup -/ meson, the signal K-bar /sup asterisk0/..-->..K/sup -/..pi../sup +/ is extracted. The inclusive rate for K-bar ( production into the forward hemisphere sigma(x/sub F/>0.3) is 115 +- 27 ..mu..b; the p/sub T/ /sup 2/ distribution is found to have a slope constant of 3.3 +- 0.6 (GeV/c)/sup 2/. The Feynman-x distribution for K-bar /sup asterisk0/ is consistent with a Kuti-Weisskopf model in which the valence and sea quarks of the incident pion interact with only the sea quarks of the target proton.

Abstract: We study long-range correlations between hadrons in opposite jets ine+e− annihilation events at$\sqrt s $=29 GeV. We use the data to measure differences between quark and antiquark fragmentation functions into charged hadrons, and to estimate the variation of fragmentation properties among quark flavors. We find large variations in longitudinal fragmentation functions, but universal mean transverse momenta of hadrons in jets.

Its signal processing system, containing 16020 channels, has been calibrated and monitored using a computer-controlled test pulser system. Abstract: We compare the particle flow in the event plane of three-jet qq-barg (quark-antiquark-gluon) events with the particle flow in radiative annihilation events qq-bar..gamma.. (quark-antiquark-photon) for similar kinematic configurations. In the angular region between quark and antiquark jet, we find a significant decrease in particle density for qq-barg as compared to qq-bar..gamma... This effect is predicted in QCD as a result of destructive interference between soft-gluon radiation from quark, antiquark, and hard gluon.

Abstract: Evidence for a narrow state decaying into an F meson and a photon has been obtained in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation events at 29 GeV c.m. energy. This state lies 139.5 +- 8.3(stat) +- 9.7(syst) MeV above the F-meson mass and is consistent with the expected F( meson. The F mesons are identified by a peak in the K/sup +/K/sup -/..pi../sup + -/ mass at 1.948 +- 0.028 +- 0.010 GeV.

Abstract: In a search for heavy Q = (2/3)e and Q = (1/3)e particles produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV, no candidate events were found in 77 pb/sup -1/ of data collected by the time projection chamber at PEP. Upper limits are established on the inclusive cross section for the production of Q = (2/3)e and Q = (1/3) particles in the mass range 1--13 GeV/c/sup 2/, improving upon previously established limits.

Abstract: We have observed hadronic final states produced in the decays of Z bosons. In order to study the parton structure of these events, we compare the distributions in sphericity, thurst, aplanarity, and number of jets to the predictions of several QCD-based models and to data from lower energies. The data and models agree within the present statistical precision.

Abstract: The DUNE IDR describes the proposed physics program and technical designs of the DUNE Far Detector modules in preparation for the full TDR to be published in 2019. It is intended as an intermediate milestone on the path to a full TDR, justifying the technical choices that flow down from the high-level physics goals through requirements at all levels of the Project. These design choices will enable the DUNE experiment to make the ground-breaking discoveries that will help to answer fundamental physics questions. Volume 1 contains an executive summary that describes the general aims of this document. The remainder of this first volume provides a more detailed description of the DUNE physics program that drives the choice of detector technologies. It also includes concise outlines of two overarching systems that have not yet evolved to consortium structures: computing and calibration. Volumes 2 and 3 of this IDR describe, for the single-phase and dual-phase technologies, respectively, each detector module's subsystems, the technical coordination required for its design, construction, installation, and integration, and its organizational structure., Comment: 83 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: We measure neutrino charged-current quasielasticlike scattering on hydrocarbon at high statistics using the wideband Neutrinos at the Main Injector beam with neutrino energy peaked at 6 GeV. The double-differential cross section is reported in terms of muon longitudinal (p_{∥}) and transverse (p_{⊥}) momentum. Cross section contours versus lepton momentum components are approximately described by a conventional generator-based simulation, however, discrepancies are observed for transverse momenta above 0.5 GeV/c for longitudinal momentum ranges 3-5 and 9-20 GeV/c. The single differential cross section versus momentum transfer squared (dσ/dQ_{QE}^{2}) is measured over a four-decade range of Q^{2} that extends to 10 GeV^{2}. The cross section turnover and falloff in the Q^{2} range 0.3-10 GeV^{2} is not fully reproduced by generator predictions that rely on dipole form factors. Our measurement probes the axial-vector content of the hadronic current and complements the electromagnetic form factor data obtained using electron-nucleon elastic scattering. These results help oscillation experiments because they probe the importance of various correlations and final-state interaction effects within the nucleus, which have different effects on the visible energy in detectors.

Abstract: The NOvA experiment has seen a 4.4σ signal of ν[over ¯]_{e} appearance in a 2 GeV ν[over ¯]_{μ} beam at a distance of 810 km. Using 12.33×10^{20} protons on target delivered to the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beamline, the experiment recorded 27 ν[over ¯]_{μ}→ν[over ¯]_{e} candidates with a background of 10.3 and 102 ν[over ¯]_{μ}→ν[over ¯]_{μ} candidates. This new antineutrino data are combined with neutrino data to measure the parameters |Δm_{32}^{2}|=2.48_{-0.06}^{+0.11}×10^{-3} eV^{2}/c^{4} and sin^{2}θ_{23} in the ranges from (0.53-0.60) and (0.45-0.48) in the normal neutrino mass hierarchy. The data exclude most values near δ_{CP}=π/2 for the inverted mass hierarchy by more than 3σ and favor the normal neutrino mass hierarchy by 1.9σ and θ_{23} values in the upper octant by 1.6σ.

Abstract: A search for mixing between active neutrinos and light sterile neutrinos has been performed by looking for muon neutrino disappearance in two detectors at baselines of 1.04 and 735 km, using a combined MINOS and MINOS+ exposure of 16.36×10^{20} protons on target. A simultaneous fit to the charged-current muon neutrino and neutral-current neutrino energy spectra in the two detectors yields no evidence for sterile neutrino mixing using a 3+1 model. The most stringent limit to date is set on the mixing parameter sin^{2}θ_{24} for most values of the sterile neutrino mass splitting Δm_{41}^{2}>10^{-4} eV^{2}.

Abstract: Results are reported from an improved measurement of ν_{μ}→ν_{e} transitions by the NOvA experiment. Using an exposure equivalent to 6.05×10^{20} protons on target, 33 ν_{e} candidates are observed with a background of 8.2±0.8 (syst.). Combined with the latest NOvA ν_{μ} disappearance data and external constraints from reactor experiments on sin^{2}2θ_{13}, the hypothesis of inverted mass hierarchy with θ_{23} in the lower octant is disfavored at greater than 93% C.L. for all values of δ_{CP}.

Abstract: This Letter reports new results on muon neutrino disappearance from NOvA, using a 14 kton detector equivalent exposure of 6.05×10^{20} protons on target from the NuMI beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The measurement probes the muon-tau symmetry hypothesis that requires maximal θ_{23} mixing (θ_{23}=π/4). Assuming the normal mass hierarchy, we find Δm_{32}^{2}=(2.67±0.11)×10^{-3} eV^{2} and sin^{2}θ_{23} at the two statistically degenerate values 0.404_{-0.022}^{+0.030} and 0.624_{-0.030}^{+0.022}, both at the 68% confidence level. Our data disfavor the maximal mixing scenario with 2.6σ significance.

Abstract: Searches for a light sterile neutrino have been performed independently by the MINOS and the Daya Bay experiments using the muon (anti)neutrino and electron antineutrino disappearance channels, respectively. In this Letter, results from both experiments are combined with those from the Bugey-3 reactor neutrino experiment to constrain oscillations into light sterile neutrinos. The three experiments are sensitive to complementary regions of parameter space, enabling the combined analysis to probe regions allowed by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) and MiniBooNE experiments in a minimally extended four-neutrino flavor framework. Stringent limits on sin^{2}2θ_{μe} are set over 6 orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting Δm_{41}^{2}. The sterile-neutrino mixing phase space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded for Δm_{41}^{2}<0.8 eV^{2} at 95% CL_{s}.

Abstract: We report results of a search for oscillations involving a light sterile neutrino over distances of 1.04 and 735 km in a ν_{μ}-dominated beam with a peak energy of 3 GeV. The data, from an exposure of 10.56×10^{20} protons on target, are analyzed using a phenomenological model with one sterile neutrino. We constrain the mixing parameters θ_{24} and Δm_{41}^{2} and set limits on parameters of the four-dimensional Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix, |U_{μ4}|^{2} and |U_{τ4}|^{2}, under the assumption that mixing between ν_{e} and ν_{s} is negligible (|U_{e4}|^{2}=0). No evidence for ν_{μ}→ν_{s} transitions is found and we set a world-leading limit on θ_{24} for values of Δm_{41}^{2}≲1 eV^{2}.

Abstract: We report results from the first search for ν_{μ}→ν_{e} transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74×10^{20} protons on target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99±0.11(syst) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07±0.14(syst). The 3.3σ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1π<δ_{CP}<0.5π in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.

Abstract: We report on a new analysis of neutrino oscillations in MINOS using the complete set of accelerator and atmospheric data. The analysis combines the ν(μ) disappearance and ν(e) appearance data using the three-flavor formalism. We measure |Δm(32)(2)| = [2.28-2.46] × 10(-3) eV(2) (68% C.L.) and sin(2)θ(23) = 0.35-0.65 (90% C.L.) in the normal hierarchy, and |Δm(32)(2)| = [2.32-2.53] × 10(-3) eV(2) (68% C.L.) and sin(2)θ(23) = 0.34-0.67 (90% C.L.) in the inverted hierarchy. The data also constrain δ(CP), the θ(23} octant degeneracy and the mass hierarchy; we disfavor 36% (11%) of this three-parameter space at 68% (90%) C.L.

Abstract: We report measurements of oscillation parameters from ν(μ) and ν(μ) disappearance using beam and atmospheric data from MINOS. The data comprise exposures of 10.71×10(20) protons on target in the ν(μ)-dominated beam, 3.36×10(20) protons on target in the ν(μ)-enhanced beam, and 37.88 kton yr of atmospheric neutrinos. Assuming identical ν and ν oscillation parameters, we measure |Δm2| = (2.41(-0.10)(+0.09))×10(-3) eV2 and sin2(2θ) = 0.950(-0.036)(+0.035). Allowing independent ν and ν oscillations, we measure antineutrino parameters of |Δm2| = (2.50(-0.25)(+0.23))×10(-3) eV2 and sin2(2θ) = 0.97(-0.08)(+0.03), with minimal change to the neutrino parameters.

Abstract: We report on ν(e) and ν(e) appearance in ν(μ) and ν(μ) beams using the full MINOS data sample. The comparison of these ν(e) and ν(e) appearance data at a 735 km baseline with θ13 measurements by reactor experiments probes δ, the θ23 octant degeneracy, and the mass hierarchy. This analysis is the first use of this technique and includes the first accelerator long-baseline search for ν(μ) → ν(e). Our data disfavor 31% (5%) of the three-parameter space defined by δ, the octant of the θ23, and the mass hierarchy at the 68% (90%) C.L. We measure a value of 2sin(2)(2θ13)sin(2)(θ23) that is consistent with reactor experiments.
