159. Depression and occupational stress in Japanese school principals and vice-principals.

Abstract

Background Teaching is one of the most stressful occupations. Over the last decade, about 5000 Japanese public school teachers per year have taken sick leave due to a mental illness. School principals and vice principals also face occupational stress, although few studies have examined occupational stress in these groups. Aims To clarify the relationship between occupational stress, role problems and depressive symptoms among school principals and vice principals in Japan. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study in 2013 with data from 262 principals and 268 vice principals in Japan. We used the Japanese version of Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) to evaluate depressive symptoms and the Generic Job Stress Questionnaire to evaluate occupational stress and social support. We categorized SDS scores above 49 as indicating depression. We examined the relationship between depressive symptoms and perceived occupational stress using stepwise forward multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results Thirty-six (14%) principals and 81 (30%) vice-principals were categorized into the depressive group. Quantitative workload (odds ratio, OR = 6.62 [2.63–16.70]) and role ambiguity (OR = 4.94[1.57–15.53]) were associated with higher depressive scores in principals. Social support from supervisors (OR = 4.14 [1.97–8.68]) and role ambiguity (OR = 9.71 [4.08–23.14]) were associated with higher depressive scores in vice-principals. Conclusions Clarifying job roles for principals and vice-principals, reducing quantitative workload for principals and increasing supervisory support for vice-principals may be important for mitigating depression for school principals and vice-principals in Japan. Abstract

Inpatients who had been in close contact with patients with influenza were given oseltamivir [75 mg capsules once daily for adults or 2 mg/kg (maximum of 75 mg) once daily for children] for three days as postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). The index patients with influenza were prescribed a neuraminidase inhibitor and were discharged immediately or transferred to isolation rooms. The protective efficacy of oseltamivir for three days was 93% overall [95% confidence interval (CI) 53-99%; P = 0.023] and 94% for influenza A (95% CI 61-99%; P = 0.017), which is comparable to that of seven- to 10-day regimens of oseltamivir as PEP.

Abstract

The winding copper loss can be significantly increased due to skin and proximity eddy current effects. The skin and proximity losses due to fundamental frequency current has been investigated in literature, but the influence of PWM on the skin and proximity losses has not been reported. In this paper, 2-D finite element method is employed to analyze the skin and proximity losses in a permanent magnet brushless AC machine, in which significant proximity loss exists due to high frequency current ripples induced by the PWM, as confirmed by both theoretical calculation and experiment. The analyses should be generally applicable to other machines.

Abstract

An optical particle counter (OPC) is used in conjunction with lidar measurements to examine the characteristics of the particle size distribution in cirrus cloud in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) over Thailand where the TTL is defined as the height at which temperature is lower than −75°C in this paper. Of 11 OPC launches, cirrus cloud was detected at 10–15 km high on 7 occasions, cirrus was detected in the TTL in 6 cases, and simultaneous OPC and lidar measurements were made on two occasions. Comparison of lidar and OPC measurements reveal that the cloud heights of cirrus in the TTL varies by several hundred meters over distances of tens kilometers; hence the height is not always horizontally uniform. The mode radii of particles constituting the clouds are estimated by lidar and OPC measurements to be less than approximately 10 μm. Abstract

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate collateral circulation by describing anterior cerebral artery and middle cerebral artery perfusion areas. Pairs of image sets spin labeled on the medial and lateral side were used. A pixel-by-pixel t test was performed, with blue gradation used to display lateral perfusion (ie, middle cerebral artery) and orange gradation for anterior cerebral artery perfusion. Extensions of anterior cerebral artery perfusion areas in cases of middle cerebral artery stenosis were described. This method may aid in estimation of collateral circulation for stroke treatment.

Abstract

Two major gene families derived from Ty3/Gypsy long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposons were recently identified in mammals. The sushi-ichi retrotransposon homologue (SIRH) family comprises 12 genes: 11 in eutherians including Peg10 and Peg11/Rtl1 that have essential roles in the eutherian placenta and 1 that is marsupial specific. Fifteen and 12 genes were reported in the second gene family, para-neoplastic antigen MA (PNMA), in humans and mice, respectively, although their biological functions and evolutionary history remain largely unknown. Here, we identified two novel candidate PNMA genes, PNMA-MS1 and -MS2 in marsupials. Like all eutherian-specific PNMA genes, they exhibit the highest homology to a Gypsy12_DR (DR, Danio rerio) Gag protein. PNMA-MS1 is conserved in both Australian and South American marsupial species, the tammar wallaby and grey short-tailed opossum. However, no PNMA-MS1 orthologue was found in eutherians, monotremes or non-mammalian vertebrates. PNMA-MS1 was expressed in the ovary, mammary gland and brain during development and growth in the tammar, suggesting that PNMA-MS1 may have acquired a marsupial-specific function. However, PNMA-MS2 seems to be a pseudogene. The absence of marsupial orthologues of eutherian PNMA genes suggests that the retrotransposition events of the Gypsy12_DR-related retrotransposons that gave rise to the PNMA family occurred after the divergence of marsupials and eutherians.
